IPhoto not launching properly

When I launch iPhoto the menu for it appears, but there is no viewing pane. Selecting anything in the available menus result in nothing happening. What's going on?

Marzy:
If you're referring to what Terence suggested about deleting the iPhoto preference file, no that won't put your image files in danger. It will be recreated when you next launch iPhoto and you'll have to reset those prefereces, i.e. appearance, etc. in iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I've been successfully running iTunes and QuickTime on this system for over a year. I often use QuickTime to watch iTunes Store-purchased videos when I'm offline.
    The problem started yesterday evening.
When I launch QuickTime, the window flashes open for a split-second and closes. The program button still appears in the toolbar; however, everything but Move, Mininize and Close are greyed out.
I tried the following fixes. All have failed.
    1. Ran Windows System Restore to point before problem occurred.
    2. Ran Repair QuickTime from Start Menu / Programs.
    3. Uninstalled QuickTime from Start Menu / Programs.
    4. Downloaded QuickTime from Apple website and installed. QuickTime would still not run and iTunes stopped working, with error message that QuickTime was missing.
    5. Uninstalled iTunes and QuickTime from Control Panel.
    6. Downloaded QuickTime + iTunes from Apple website and reinstalled.
    7. Deleted all QuickTime preferences files (I found four).
    8. Re-entered registration number for QuickTime. (I upgraded to QuickTime Pro earlier this year.)
iTunes is now working normally but QuickTime still will not launch properly.
It's possible that yesterday I launched iTunes while QuickTime was running; it's the only thing I can think of that might have created this problem.
Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds as if you have more of a problem than I did. I'm not an expert and I'm hesitant to make suggestions that might make the problem worse.
In the meantime, I do recommend that you back up all of your iTunes music before you do anything else, and get into the habit of backing up on a regular basis.
Then you might want to try this: completely uninstall both iTunes and QuickTime (using Revo, unless you know how to clean up the registry on your own). Then reinstall both programs (available at the link I posted earlier) and see if that takes care of the problem.
If this doesn't work, I suggest you start your own thread describing the problem and asking for help. Hopefully an Apple rep -- or at least someone more experienced than I am -- can help you.
Sorry I can't be more useful, and good luck.

  • InDesign not launch properly

I have been using Indesign CS6 on my government computer at work for over a year.  Yesterday I tried to launch it and it will not launch properly.  It basically becomes unresponsive and doesn't fully launch.  Or it completely launches but won't open any files.  At first I tried a computer restart, which didn't help.  Then the administrator reloaded the entire CS6 suite on the computer after uninstalling it.  It still will not launch.  I did some research online and tried to find the temp folder to clear it out, but the instructions for finding it for Windows 7 didn't correspond to the folders on my computer.
At this point I have no idea what's going on and would really like to be able to resolve this problem.  I use Indesign for a lot of stuff at work and this is slowing me down.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give me to fix this problem.

  • Why does iPhoto not launch after update to version 9.3.2?

Double clicking the application icon causes it to bounce 3 or 4 times in the dock and then quits. Trying to open with command + option will not launch for a rebuild. Holding down the option key illicits the same behavior.
How can I downgrade to 9.3.1 or make 9.3.2 work? It was working perfectly before the upgrade.
My other computer (a recent MacBook Pro) shows 9.3.1 version and software update shows it's up to date. It works great.

Still will not launch in new user account.
Downloaded a fresh copy of iPhoto 9.3.2 from Apple's website and updated. Did show error this time when it failed to launch.

  • Iphoto not working properly after installing snow leopard...

    the two main problems are...
    1) when editing in full frame, if I zoom in on the photo and try to move around with a two finger scroll, there is a big delay between me moving to where I want to be and the photo actually getting there.
    2) when editing with "adjust," there is a delay when changing anything (such as highlights and shadows).
everything was perfect and happened in real time prior to installing snow leopard. when I called apple, I was told it was probably because iphoto is not 64-bit yet (would have been nice to have known that this would be an issue prior to the install). he said that if everything on my computer was added after snow leopard, I would probably be fine.
can anybody give me some advice on what to do here? I wouldn't mind going back to leopard if I can do that without losing everything, but am very open to ideas if anyone here has anything on this.
side note...safari seems to be having issues as well. takes a long time to load pages and sometimes won't be able to open them without closing out and reopening it a time or two. wasn't a problem before either.
    thank you,
    sean

I am having a similar(?) but perhaps distinct problem. My wife and I have separate user accounts on our MacBook. We were sharing the same photo library under Leopard with no problems whatsoever. Now, after installing SL, there is a strange situation. If I am in my account, and I import images from a camera into iPhoto, I am able to view and edit with no problems. However, when my wife launches iPhoto, she can see the event and the thumbnails in the event, but when she tries to edit the picture or even preview in iPhoto (clicking the space bar), the picture becomes a blank dark screen. If you hit add face while on the blank screen, the program can pick out the faces, but the picture is still blank.
If I try to import photos into the library when she is using her user account, the reverse applies to me. That is, I can only preview and edit pictures added under my account, and not hers.
I never had this problem with Leopard or with iPhoto '09 under Leopard. Any ideas what might be going on? I would think to go the genius bar, but I am not sure what they woudl be able to do about it. Thanks in advance.

  • IPhoto not launching completely

I haven't been able to access iPhoto for the past two days. I've been on the forums and seen others describe the same problem I'm having (see https://discussions.apple.com/message/15736289#15736289 )
    Here's what is happening:
    1) Open iPhoto
    2) Appears to launch
    3) Menu headings appear but no iPhoto interface ever appears
    4) Almost all menu options are grayed out including Quit
    5) Cannot quit iPhoto without performing force quit
    6) When attempting to reboot the entire computer, iPhoto will not quit unless I force quit
    Troubleshooting attempts that have failed:
-Checked to see if all iPhoto library contents are still intact. When I show the package contents for iPhoto and they are intact.
-Upgraded from 7.1.5 to the latest version in iLife '11 via App Store
-Uninstalled iPhoto app (as well as all pkg files in Receipts folder) and reinstalled
    -Trashed plist file
-Ran Disk Utility after booting from external drive. Repaired permission. Repaired disk.
    Troubleshooting that partially failed:
-Started iPhoto while holding down Option key
    -Created new library
-Had to force quit out of app
    -Restarted app
-Most options are no longer gray including Quit so I can quit the app
-But when I select a menu option such as Import to Library, the menus all go gray again except for Quit and a few others.
iPhoto never formally crashes so I don't have a crash report for diagnostic purposes.
Console Messages aren't much help either.
Before the clean reinstall of iPhoto I got the following:
Since reinstalling the app the only iPhoto related message that appears in Console Messages is:
    ([0x0-0x8b08b].com.apple.iPhoto[2965]) Exited: Terminated
The last step I can think of is a 10.6.8 system reinstall unless someone has other suggestions for troubleshooting

Hooray! I finally got a positive result thanks to your help, TD! Thank you so very much!
For the sake of documentation, here's what I did:
Based on the thread you directed me to I went to the User/Library/Preferences folder and found the following files:
    com.apple.iApps.plist
    com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
I moved them to a folder on my desktop I created named "Preferences A".
Then I moved the AlbumData.xml from iPhoto there as well.
When I launched iPhoto it brought up an interface!
Next, it asked it prompt to upgrade in order to run
Then it advanced to "Writing new iPhoto library data..."
Finally, it advanced to "Updating library..." going through all the photo files already present in the library file
Once that was complete, the welcome screen for the updated iPhoto app came up along with all the photos I had in my original library
    Again, thank you TD!!!

  • IPhoto not launching

I purchased a used laptop MacBook Pro off of ebay. It is running OS 10 7.5. All programs seem to work great except iPhoto. When you launch it, it says iPhoto cannot be opened beause of a problem.  And then it tells you to try reinstalling the software. So I went to the APP Store downloaded iPhoto again and still get the same message. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it doesn't then your current library is the problem and needs to be repaired. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto not launching email when sending photos

After I select photos to email in iPhoto, I hit the email icon and a new email screen doesnt pop up anymore. It used to launch it correctly w/ the photos attached but it has stopped. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Mary:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you checked iPhoto's preferences to make sure there's an email application selected? If there is and it's not working, close iPhoto and delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, located in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Next run Disk Utility and repair disk permissions. Then launch iPhoto and reset your preferences, including the email selection.

  • Why will iPhoto not launch

When my iMac was finished with installing and rebooting from 10.91.1 to 10.9.2 last week, iPhoto would no longer fully launch. It comes to a blank graphic of the opening screen and stays there for quite a few minutes and then finally quits.  I have allowed it to send the data to Apple, but have not received any information. I deleted the com.apple.iphoto.plist to no avail.  I cannot get to the "about" menu to find the version, but if I get info on the app icon itself, it appears to be 9.5.1.
Does anyone have any fixes for this? I use iPhoto every day.

  • IPhoto not working properly, I've tried everything...

I have the latest version of Iphoto 9.3.2 & recently it hasn't been working properly. Whenever I drag a picture to Iphoto from the internet, it will show in my library, but everytime I restart & reload IPhoto, the pictures won't show when I click on them & it's just black w/ a triangle & an exclamation point inside.  It's weird because this happened to a lot of my downloaded photos and I can't get them back. I've never had this problem before, I've tried everything. I've done the repair/rebuild options those don't work. I've tried to reinstall, the same thing happens. This is really fusturating because I can't use view/store my photos in IPhoto anymore. Anybody have a solution?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
When you drag a picture from the Internet to iPhoto, are you sure it's been downloaded?

  • IPhoto not printing properly to P-10

I downloaded the correct driver for my Olympus P-10 digital printer, and iPhoto recognizes it. The printer prints fine directly from the camera, however, when I try to print an edited photo from iPhoto 5.0.4, the full image does not print. A portion of it does, depending upon what constraints I have set in the edit process. I've tried multiple configurations of restraints to no avail. So far, the closest acceptable print is to set the layout to "N-up" which essentially prints four 4X6 photos to a page, but even that is not as good as it should be. What am I doing wrong in iPhoto?
    Thanks in advance.

  • New photos app (replacing iPhoto) not syncing properly

Since installing the new OS X Yosemite 10.10.3  to iMac and ISO 8.3 to iPhone 5s and iPad3, not all of my photo albums and photos in various albums are syncing..... any hints?? I also installed the latest iTunes 12.1.2.27 too ! I have rebooted all devices too....
    Thanks Schooner

Same issue here. Photos taken on my iPhone show up on my iPad and vice versa, but nothing new shows up in Photos on my Mac. It’s perpetually stuck “preparing items”, ostensibly for syncing to the cloud, but it never seems to get unstuck. I think it worked for about a day after uploading my 53,000 photos, but as soon as I deleted some of my now redundant date-organized “iPhoto” albums it got stuck again in syncing (apparently trying to sync every single photo AGAIN) and hasn’t worked since. I would  prefer to use Apple software, but I’m about to declare defeat.

  • Why does Acrobat 8 not launch properly?

    Hello,
I have CS2 with Acrobat 7 and an upgrade 8. I have worked with it for at least 2 years without any problem. Now I have changed my system from 2000 PRO to XP Pro. The CS2 programs are all working again. Only Acrobat does not. After the activation it said goodbye. When I launch it, it shows up for a  glimpse, maybe 1/10 second, then disappears without any warning, like a dim spark. What can I do?
I have not yet reinstalled the Reader. I want to solve this problem first.

    Not true!
A standard CD/DVD lens cleaner that uses tiny brushes will do the job.
But you should try resetting the SMC:
Resetting the SMC (System Management Controller) on Intel-based Macs:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964  and
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237?viewlocale=en_US
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
If none of that works (and these vertically installed Superdrives that were originally designed for horizontal use in a MacBook can be fickle) then any USB DVD burner/player will work well, and cost from as little as $40. Just make sure that it is stated to be Mac compatible.
