IPhoto not recognizing files

When importing my photos and video from my Nikon D90 camera I got the error:
"the following file could not be imported. (The file is in an unrecognized format.)"
It appears as though some of my videos were not recognized. I am confused by this because most of my videos DID import.
Please help! Thank you.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That sounds like it could be a damaged memory card. Use Image Capture or a card reader to get all of the files off the memory card. Then use the camera to reformat the card, shot some test photos and videos and try importing again.
I don't know how you normally erase the card but it should be done with the camera via its reformat option. Letting iPhoto do it can lead to loss of photos. All to often users will report incomplete uploads and complete deletions by iPhoto.

  • ITunes and iPhoto not recognizing my iPhone 4S!

I asked a friend who works at apple to help me with this but he stop responding after a while... but it seems my computer is "seeing" my iPhone 4S but iTunes and iPhoto are not recognizing it. I have done all the recommended tricks including restarting both the computer and the phone... iTunes is UTD etc. HELP!!! I need to have my phone usable for a 8 day trip next week and I am completely out of Memomry. I hate iCloud am out of storage there too. I just don't know what to do!

By "seeing" you mean the iPhone charges when connected?

  • Iphoto not recognizing iphone?

I cant get iphone to download photos not even an option in iphoto.

Same problem here, photo sync used to work fine, stopped all of a sudden. I wanted to sync before the 1.0.2 update just in case, and I had about 200 photos outstanding. Plugged in phone, not recognized in iPhoto or image capture. Rebooted mac (G5 dual), reset iPhone, plugged in again, nothing. There were a couple of timeouts on the USB bus in the log that looked suspicious.
I was now at the "grasping at straws" stage, so I grabbed the USB cable that was included in the iPhone box and tried that (I had been using the USB cable that came with an iPod). This was -really- grasping at straws and really hoping for magic, since the phone with the other cable was working fine syncing with iTunes....just not the photos.
So unplugged the old cable, used the new one, and it worked. Freaky. To double-verify, I went back to the iPod cable, and it also worked now. Double freaky.
So, who knows. But it might be worth a shot to try the original cable if you're using a different one. Switching USB ports maybe would help as well? Or just plug it in, leave it for a few seconds, and then unplug both ends of the cable and plug it back. Nothing makes much sense, but these activities apparently fixed it for me.

  • Why is Iphoto not recognizing my Iphone?

My Iphoto is not recognizing my Iphone - WHY??? It used to be automatic.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on eight different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • IPhoto not recognizing .jpg/.jpeg files

I recently (last night) had to restore my system from a Time Machine back-up and iPhoto is no longer able to import .jpg files, it wont even import files I just exported directly from iPhoto.
I've tried option-command opening iPhoto and rebuilding the library from there.
All the .jpgs are in RGB color profile

  • IPhoto not recognizing RAW files

I have a Canon t2i (550d) and have taken photo's in RAW mode... however neither iPhoto of Aperture seem to recognize this type of file (.cr2, a canon type of raw file).. it seems to be supported by other camera's.. is anyone else experiencing this , or a similar issue? All software updates are current.

While it is true that every CR2 is different, the actual file internals have no more difference than, say JPEGS. After all, Adobe can take almost any RAW file and convert it to an equivalent DNG. It is really that each camera is different. Each sensor responds differently to light. Without Canon's help, Apple must get hold of (several?) cameras and take a bunch of images and profile them. If you are interested, here are the details of what needs to be done:
    http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/accessories/dng-profiles.shtml
(You can profile your own camera!)
In unrelated news, I made it to the Top Users list!, Woo Hoo!

  • Iphoto not recognizing Canon raw files even after latest update

I have a Canon 5D MkII and the camera was listed in the last iPhoto update as one of the cameras that iPhoto will allow camera raw downloads with. It gets about 3/4 the way through my downloads and just freezes the whole computer to where I have to power off to reboot. Then it wil come up with a box that says the raw files are unreadable or unrecognized. Very frustrated. Help please!

If you want to shoot RAW, you better forget about iPhoto and start using an application that's been designed for that purpose like Aperture, Lightroom or even Canon DPP.
iPhoto sort of handles RAW files since the support is built-in to the OS, but its tools are inadequate at best.

  • Iphoto not loading, files in trash?

My iphoto stopped working.  It tries to load but just spins.  It appears my library/photos files are still intact.  I think the problem originated when, in an effort to clean up some recent photos, files were identified through Finder and sent to Trash.  Suspicious of that action I opened Trash, and found several items such as master.apmaster, printalbum.apalbum, and many others with the extension .apalbum, .apfolder, as well as a couple large files properties.apdb and imageproxies.apdb which ended up in there too!   Assuming this is the source of my problem, can  I just drag the files back from trash? and where do I drop them?....to the harddrive icon or do they need to go somewhere more specific?    Should I just drag all my trash back just to be sure I don't miss anything, or are there some specific parameters I should look for?  (For the record, I am not exactly a computer whiz and would appreciate any help!)

Those files are components of the iPhoto Library Package.  As of now that library is history.  The best you can do is either restore the backup copy of the library made just prior to this problem occurring
How is your external HD that is used to backup your boot drive formatted?  If it's not OS X Extended (journaled) you have a very good chance of not having a useable backup library.
    or do the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • IPhoto not recognizing keywords created in CS3

I've added keywords to files (both psds and jpegs) I've created in Photoshop and Bridge (CS3). If I look at the file info in Finder, the keywords are there. But when I look at the info of the file in iPhoto, the keywords don't show. Also when I create a Smart Album to match the keywords, nothing shows.
    Any ideas?

You shouldn't reverse engineer answers from your initial hypothesis
Not what I did. I searched on Google and found only references to jpeg and tiff supporting IPTC and none to psd. Have you tried that? I'm not sure that the Finder supports IPTC data, only limited Exif.
Why would photoshop be writing for the benefit of the Apple operating system when it's cross platform?
Because they're nice people? Or because both Oses support basic metadata comments?
    Regards

  • Pictures in iPhoto not recognized in iMovie 8.

All my pictures in iPhoto do not show up in iMovie 8. They did in the previous version 6. How do I get iMovie 8 to recognized all my pictures in iPhoto? Many thanks for any help.

I have rebuilt the database with the options you suggested. Whilst this took a long time it was successful in solving the original problem.
I noticed that one of the processes was to +'upgraded the thumbnails'+ this terminology is interesting as a number of the photos came from different cameras and/or were added over the years in earlier versions of iPhoto. I presume that this was the reason the term upgrade was used is this correct.
The problem was solved thanks for your help.

  • Iphoto not recognizing my preset manual white balance setting on my Nikon D3100

    hi there.
i've been using iPhoto to edit my photos uploaded as RAW, from my Nikon D3100.  While i've been very satisfied with the results, i've run across a small problem.  i've used various white balance settings on my camera:  incandescent, flourescent, auto white balance, and recently started using the manual white balance.  when uploading pictures to iphoto, the photo has indicated what white balance setting i have used, except when i use my manual white balance feature, the information shows up as AWB (automatic white balance).
can somebody please explain to me why this is?  any other setting i use shows up with the appropriate icon, according to what i choos on my camera.  is this a glitch?  what is the manual white balance setting icon supposed to look like in iPhoto?
Again, I shoot in RAW, and upload directly to iPhoto successfully, as RAW.

I think this article will help explain this
    and this one from Adobe
    — Raw files have not had while balance set. They are tagged with whatever the camera's setting was, (either that which was manually set or via auto-white-balance), but the actual data has not been changed. This allows one to set any colour temperature and white balance one wishes after the fact with no image degradation. It should be understood that once the file has been converted from the linear space and has had a gamma curve applied (such as in a JPG) white balance can no longer be properly done.
So the displaed WB is simply a tag and has no effect on the image - it is simply information about the camera settings

  • After 10.3.9 Upgrade, iPhoto not recognizing Library

After I completed my 10.3.9 upgrade (from 10.1.5), and subsequent upgrade to iPhoto 2.0.1, I get the following effor message when launching iPhoto 2.0.1 (iPhoto was working fine before OS upgrade):
Your Photo Library was not found. Do you want to find your Photo Library?
iPhoto can't continue without a Photo Library. Make sure the disk containing your Photo Library is connected.
    <Quit> <Create Library...> <Find Library...>
So, I tried Quit. Restarted and got the same result.
Then I tried Find Library, but when I navigate to the file on my computer called Library.data it is greyed out(location is Pictures:iPhotoLibrary:Library.data)
Then I tried Create Library, but of course all I had was an empty library, and I could research no way to import or link my existing library.
Please shower your suggestions on me.
    With thanks,
    Duane

Hi, Duane. Trash the new, empty iPhoto Library folder that was created when you exercised the "Create Library" option. Open iPhoto, opt to "Find Library", and navigate to your original iPhoto Library folder. Select that folder, not any of the files or folders inside it. That's your library.
The standard, default path to that library folder is: Your hard drive>Users>your account name>Pictures>iPhoto Library. You can move the library elsewhere if you like, but if you have no good reason to do so, leaving it in the default location is probably best.
A cardinal rule for iPhoto users is never to tamper with any of the things inside an iPhoto Library folder. Everything inside that folder is arranged exactly the way iPhoto needs it to be arranged, and next time you open iPhoto, it expects to find all the contents exactly as it left them last time. If you tinker with the contents of that folder via the Finder, or using any tool or utility other than iPhoto itself, the library database will be corrupted for iPhoto's purposes, and some or all of your pictures or albums will seem to have vanished the next time you open iPhoto.
There is a Discussions forum entirely devoted to iPhoto 4 and earlier. If you have further questions related to your version of iPhoto, I recommend posting them in that forum.
