Iphoto not starting up, Rainbow wheel.

Hi, a few days ago I found a lot of old pictures on cd's (from an old back up) and loaded them into iPhoto. My iphoto is on my external harddrive as my photos would take up too much space on my old mac.
Now when I try to open iPhoto i get the rainbow wheel. What can I do?
I have the latest version of iphoto and a macbook pro running version 10.6.8.
Thank you!

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the externl.
If that doesn't help:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal
      Charge Information:
      Charge Remaining (mAh):          5420
      Fully Charged:          Yes
      Charging:          No
      Full Charge Capacity (mAh):          5482
      Health Information:
      Cycle Count:          806
      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

  • IPhoto not start

I'm having trouble with start iPhoto. When the start appears a colorful spinning disk and iPhoto does not start. This occurred during a importing session. What should I do to solve the problem without losing the imported pictures?

Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Will not start only spinning wheel

My two-year old iMac 21.5 will not start. All I get is a gray Apple Screen and the spinner.   Before this restart, I changed the permissions for the hard drive to allow the administrator to have access to the whole hard drive.  I got a start series of interminable warning saying that certain plug-ins or such had to be replaced.
    Can anyone help?

You just hosed the installation. Most OS components require the system to be the owner, not the administrator. All I can suggest is to boot into your bootable backup/clone, wipe the HD, and restore it. It might be possible to boot with your SL install disk and restore a TM backup, but I don't use it. Details in Pondini's Tips.

  • Urgent HELP needed: Address Book will not start, just spinning wheel.

When I want to start the Address Book I just get the spinning wheel without end.
If I press: Command-Option-Esc to force-quit the application I am informed that the Address Book is not responding; I can only force-quit the application.
Since my AB data is also on MobileMe and another computer, I could, if necessary, delete whatever data files (and repopulate later). But how do I get Address Book working again?
Your help is highly appreciated. Thanks, Veit

Thanks, Roam, for the referral to Pacifist; sounds useful in the future.
I could solve my problem by:
    - deleting the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file
    - resetting the synchronization files as described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10868689&#10868689
    - and finally syncing with MobileMe, i.e. overwriting the computer with data from MobileMe.
All seems to work again, also the resizing. Thanks again for your help. Cheers, Veit

and never seem to stop.  Sometimes, the window never appears but if I hit command-tab and I see it as
an option and select, the mac pinwheel just spins, and spins, and spins.
Has anyone run into this before?

Mine actually was the fact that I never really finished the install.  I think you have to go through the install from within the Creative Cloud window located on the top of your screen (you'll see the Ai creative cloud icon).  You should see a bunch of products with 'Try' or 'Install' and you find Ai and click install.  It takes a while but it will install.

  • Application Manager Downloads cause rainbow wheel of death

Each time I go to download an app with my Creative Cloud account via the Application Manager, it will download, but then once the install begins it continually starts the rainbow wheel of death. I'm running Snow Leopard, all up to date. Brand new MB Pro too.  I have to continually shutdown my laptop manually and go through this whole process over again. Still continues to do the same thing. Any ideas? So frustrating.

At first download the Adobe applciation manager manually from the locations:
    Mac:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4774&fileID= 4438
    Windows:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4773&fileID= 4437
Later If you are still facing issue. Rename Media_db, pdb and OOBE folder.
The path for the above files will be:
    1: OOBE
Windows: C>Program files or Program files(x86)>Common files>Adobe>OOBE and rename the OOBE folder to like (OOBEold).
    Mac OS X : Macintosh HD>Library>Applciation support>Adobe>OOBE .
    2:Location of Media_db, pdb files.
    Windows: C>Program files or Program files(x86)>Common files>Adobe>Caps
    Mac OS X : Macintosh HD>Library>Applciation support>Adobe>Caps.
After renaming OOBE, Media_db, pdb files  run the Application manager which was downloaded and if the issue still persists then:
Create a new Administartor account and the restart the computer and log in back to the created new admin account , log in to CCm account and then try it will work.
If you still have queries regarding Creative Cloud installation and setup, you  can contact support using the below link.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/contact/
    1) Choose 'Creative Cloud' from the field 'Select Your Adobe Product'
    2) Choose the option " Download, installing and setting up" from drop down menu for the option ' Tell us what you need help with?'

  • Iphoto not working - i get spinning rainbow wheel

My iphoto does not work.. It has suddenly stopped!
When I open iPhoto, the spinning rainbow wheel comes up, and I am unable to do anything - so I have to force quit..
I'm not sure what to do? I have the extended warranty for my laptop - it is less than 12 months old
iTunes also wont update to the latest version either.....
Any suggestions on what I should do?
    Im mostly concerned about iPhoto...

    Hi,
I've had this issue twice now when importing photo's from my iPhone.
First time I rebuild library from backup. The backup did not contain the imported pictures so iPhoto worked fine again.
Yesterday I "retried" to import. So the problem re-occured (duh).
This time however I noticed there was an "update icon" next to places when iPhoto froze.
So I decided to disable automatic "Lookup Places". The trick however is to get into a responsive iPhoto.
For this: start iPhoto while holding the Option (or alt) key, create a new library, open iPhoto using this new library, go to Preferences, Advanced Tab, set Look up Places to " never".
Close iPhoto, open again using Option (or alt) key (because the new, empty, library has been set to default automatically), select your original library and your iPhoto should be fine again.
This did the trick for me. Hope this helps.
    Cheers!

I cannot email from Iphoto. Mail just quits. Rainbow wheel spins continuously. Will not let me go from drafts to inbox or outbox, etc.
My regular google gmail works fine.

You should be able to do it with Dropbox.

  • 2007 iMac freezes up, rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve?

My circa 2007 iMac freezes up, and rainbow wheel appears when this happens. I know the computer is starting to get old but I can't afford a new one at this time and would love to continue using my Mac, but it's frustrating. Most of the time I ONLY have 1 thing open at a time, and keep my tabs down to a minimum. I bought this to do film editing on but with it acting like this I cannot do that. I know I need a ram upgrade (currently running 2 gb) and my OS is old, 10.5.8, but I think even with it being a bit outdated it should run better than this. Would a fresh install or OS upgrade resolve this? Or any other suggestions to keep this clunker chugging along for a little while longer?

How full is the hard drive?
Do you run any virus software or hard drive "cleaner" software like MacKeeper?
If your model is from 2007 you can install up to 6 GBs of RAM.
2 GBs is the barest of minimum RAM for OS X to run on.
Especially if doing video work. You simply do not have sufficient RAM.
Also OS X 10.5.8 Leopard support ended around 2009.
You could update to OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, at least.
It is available on disc from the Apple store for U.S. $19.99.
I Would seriously upgrade your iMac's RAM to the max. 6 GBs before doing this.
Reliable Mac RAM can be purchase from online Mac RAM source Crucial memory or OWC ( also known as macsales).
