IPhoto not working with iMovie or Garageband

Ever since I upgraded to iMovie 09 (from 08), my iPhotos will NOT load to iMovie. Or Garageband or even upload to email for that matter.
What happens is that my iphotos say "loading photos" or something like that, and it just has a little spinner there and NEVER loads the photos for use with iMOvie. During Garageband, it shuts down my computer every single time.
I went to the Mac store and they couldn't figure it out either.
Can someone help me?
OR.....I have my original CD that came with my computer. If I put that in, will my original iLife 08 reload? I'm nervous to try it, but I'm desperate. It's been 6 months without the use of my iAnything.

Sal, I had a similar problem once. I'm sorry you had to go through so much of this but maybe what I discovered can still help you.
- View your albumdata.xml file in some text editor, like TextEdit.
- Do a Find (cmd f) for "List of Keywords"
- The XML under that looks kind of like this:
<dict>
<key>1</key>
<string>Favorite</string>
<key>6</key>
<string>Birthday</string>
<key>3</key>
</dict>
You will probably have more keywords, this is just an example. But see the format - everything that has <something> ends with </something>.
When I had the problem, the example above looked like:
<dict>
<key>1</key>
<string>Favorite <key>6</key>
<string>Birthday</string>
<key>3</key>
</dict>
Notice the line return and </string> are missing for "Favorite". This happened to one of my keywords, and I don't know what caused it, but I deleted that keyword (and the one after it) from within iPhoto's preferences, and typed them in again.
The problem went away. Maybe some bogus character got into the keywords to make the XML go bad.
So try to use the method above to identify which keyword might have a problem, rather than go on a witch hunt and waste a lot of time. Of course, your problem could be different from mine entirely, but my iLife apps had the same problem you described.

  • Why is a video clip from iphoto not compatible with imovie?

i have a video clip in iphoto and when i try to add it by dragging it into the videos in imovie, it says "the file will not be imported. it is not compatible with imovie". this video clip was taken with my friend's point and shoot type camera, then put on her computer, then put on a flash drive, then put on my computer. thank you so much for any help!

    Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Some "..point and shoot.." cameras create movies in an iMovie-compatible ".mov" format, but others create .avi files, or they record in the MPEG-1 format which iMovie can't unscramble.
Not all point and shoot movies are compatible with iMovie, even if they play using Apple's QuickTime movie player which iPhoto relies on.
These non-compatible movies need to be converted to .mov format, or some other compatible format such as DV or AIC, before trying to import them into iMovie. If you have QuickTime Pro, you can just open the movie clips and then use 'Export' to save them in the .mov format.
..More details from me - or others - later; I'm dashing out right now for a bite to eat..

  • Help!  iSight Not Working with iMovie!

I can't seem to use my iSight camera with iMovie. ?? The camera works with PhotoBooth, but with iMovie not even the "Record with iSight" button appears. I'm using iMovie 5 on an IMac G5 with a built-in iSight camera. Any suggestions on getting iSight to record to iMovie??

    You're welcome, -John
If you are following the directions in this Apple article
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh2329.html,
    your iSight should be working.
If you have added any hardware or software since iMovie worked correctly for you, first rule out any Possible conflicts with your iSight.
If your problem is ONLY with iMovie, try this:
    • Quit iMovie if it is open.
    • Delete your iMovie preferences file:
     Finder > Go > Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iMovie.plist
    • If they exist, also delete any other "com.apple.iMovie" files that end in ".plist" in this folder, or example, "com.apple.iMovie2.plist" and / or "com.apple.iMovie3.plist".
    • Close those folders and launch iMovie again to check for proper functioning.
    • When you get iMovie working again after tossing your old .plist files, you will need to reset all preferences that you want to be different from the default values.
If you cannot make your iSight does not work in any app or in any User Account, you will need the help of an Apple Service Provider Technician to repair your iSight.
If only iMovie gives you trouble, even after dumping the iMovie preferences, I suggest you reinstall the iMovie application.

  • Iphoto not working with screen saver

Ever since I upgrade to 10.6.2, my screen saver will not allow me to use pictures in iphoto. When I click on a folder to use, it gives me a message "unable to use iphoto please contact vendor for screen saver upgrade" or very close to that. HUH? Isn't apple my vendor for both? Any ideas on how to go back to using my photos as my screen saver?

My guess is that ILMediaBrowser is referring to the iLife Media Browser. You might run Software Update and see if you somehow missed an update to it. However, if it worked with a new iPhoto Library I think the iLife Media Browser is probably OK, but there is something funky in the innards of your original iPhoto Library that is crashing the Media Browser.
You could try holding the Command and Option keys down, then launch iPhoto from the Applications folder. Keep holding the keys until it asks you if you want to rebuild. There are list of items to be checked, click on the ones that sound likely to help matters.

  • Iphoto not working with OS X

Hello! I recently updated my operating system on my MacBook Pro to the Maverick OS X and ever since I did that, I am not able to open iPhoto, I receive this message: "You can’t use this version of the application “iPhoto” with this version of OS X.You have “iPhoto” 9.2.3." Can you please help me make iPhoto work again?
    Thank you!

You need to backup your iPhoto library and go to the App store and update to iPhoto '11 version 9.5 - a free upgrade if you own any version of iPhoto '11 which you do - version 9.2.3 is an oldr version of ihoto '11

  • De-noise on iPhoto not working with Canon camera pictures

When I try to use the de-noise option in iPhoto on some pictures taken with a professional camera (Canon), it does not de-noise the picture.
I tried diffrent stuff to see what works and what does not:
    - If I use a picture taken from iPhone / iPad, in iPhoto de-noise works
    - If I take a professional picture, send it to my iPhone and resend it on my Mac, the de-noise will work
    - If I use a professional picture on my Mac desktop, de-noise works as well.
Just not in that initial circumstance ... Strange !! Help ?!

    How does this
When I try to use the de-noise option in iPhoto on some pictures taken with a professional camera (Canon), it does not de-noise the picture
    differ from this?
    - If I use a professional picture on my Mac desktop, de-noise works as well.

  • Iphoto not working with upgrade and updated after Yosemite update

We updated to Yosemite last night and this morning I found I can not open my iPhoto.  We had a very old version that cost to update so I decided to wait, well when I saw there was a free update I did that, then it said To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared.  Now when I try to open it it keeps telling me to do the prepared upgrader and I already did, so it only gives me the option to quit or learn more which is where you down load it.

All fixed thanks to the apple support people.  It was very hard and many many different ways to get it resolved.

  • HD camera not working with imovies.

Hello - I have I Panasonic SDR-H18 which records in MPEG-2. imovies does not recognize my camera and it will not let me put my MPEG-2 files into the program from Finder. I've been reading up on some other post on forums about this, but don't yet feel I have an answer. It has been suggested that I need to buy the MPEG-2 component and that that will allow me to convert my files to .DV files which imovies can read. THis all sounds like a very long drawn out process. Surely imovies should be able to read my HD camera! I have 2.5 years worth of movies of my young children which I want to edit and it just isn't practical for me to convert every single file. IS there a batch method of converting? OR is there a way I can get imovies to read my camera files as they are! ? I'm really frustrated as I bought this mac 2nd hand from my sister so that I could easily do things like movie editing and photo editing, but it's proving more difficult than on a pc! :O( Hope someone can help me!!

  • Iphoto not working with new OS X

Hi Everyone, I've just downloaded the new OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 and for some reason now I can't open iPhoto.
I get a message saying "You can't use this version of the application 'iPhoto' with this version of OS X. You have 'iPhoto' 9.2.3"
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Mitch,
You should have an update for iPhoto waiting in the App Store. If you don't, go to the App Store and type iPhoto in the search bar. It should display the app, and have "Update" in the place where the price normally is.
    Cheers,

  • IPhoto not working with Snow Leopard

I installed Snow Leopard and then opened iPhoto, all my edited photos, when opened on the full screen, come up either as a full page of red or green stripes. Went to the Genius bar, they wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled everything, except Snow Leopard from my backup and it worked fine.
They told me to wait about 2 weeks and then try and install Snow Leopard again, and unfortunately the same thing is happening.
    Anybody else have this problem?
    Thanks

Thank you Terence for your reply
I have just sent my query to you again I think under another thread.
I migrated the photos from another computer to this one.
I also copied some photos from another imac g5 on to this computer.

  • Integral iSight not compatible with iMovie

Just found this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. It says that the integral iSight in the new iMac G5 will not work with iMovie. So much for having a $150 iSight camera built into your iMac as it is an iSight in name only, not functionality.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302749

You can capture from the built-in iSight under the following conditions:
    1. Plug-in a separate FW deck/cam, and power it up such that it's output is recognized and displayed in iMovie.
    2. Power-off the deck/cam, or just unplug it.
Very shortly thereafter, iMovie should display the output from the built-in iSight, and iSight's green activity light should come on.
I found this out just today - quite by chance. Be a little careful, it's a temporary session. As soon as you go to your clips or timeline, the built-in iSight link is gone, until you repeat steps 1 and 2 above again.

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • I just upgraded to os 10.9.5. When I try to open iPhoto, I am told that the version I have(9.3), is not compatible with the os. But it came with it when I upgraded. What do I have to do to get an iPhoto that works with 10.9.5? TIA

I just upgraded to os 10.9.5 on my 15 " macbook pro from os 10.7.5. When I try to open iPhoto, I get the message that it is not compatible with the os. How can that be??? It came with the upgrade. It says the version of iPhoto is 9.3. How do I get an iPhoto that works with os 10.9.5? TIA

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgradeto iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

Is there a way to make an audio clip not cover the whole project in iMovie? I want to add audio clip or song and let it start at a certain point in the project. Whenever I add audio or song it covers the whole project. I'm working with iMovie on IPad!

Thank you for your reply Karsten but unfortunately this didn't help me so far. Or maybe I'm missing something?
First the link is a tutorial for iMovie on a Mac. I'm using iMovie on iPad so the steps are inapplicable.
Second it is only possible for me to manipulate the end part of the sound clip to whichever duration I want. But I can't do the same with the 'beginning' of the sound clip.
I simply want to place some photos in the beginning of my video with no sound in the background then after like 2 secs I want to start the music clip. For some reason that is not possible! Cause every time I drop the music clip unto my project timeline it automatically place it self along with the first frame in the project! And consequently the photos and music are forced to start together.
    Hope I'm making sense...
