IPhoto on 10.4.3 server

has anybody got this working? I ran the individual iphoto.mpkg onto my server, but it still doesn't seem to work right. Has problems loading photos and doesn't quit.
I know iLife is not officially supported on server, but was just wondering if anybody else had gotten it to work or if it is just a problem with my setup.

On the Mac OS X Server installation disk, open the folder Other Installs and then double-click the item MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg inside; this will convert an existing Mac OS X client install to Mac OS X Server, and can be done on a system where Mac OS X Server cannot be installed directly. If this is done on an Intel Mac, the resulting configuration cannot be updated any further and Software Update will not work. More information is available in this article.

Problems trying to copy iPhoto library to Windows Home Server

I recently purchased a Windows Home Server and want to put my iPhoto library on the NAS. I am having problem and have tried several different approaches to no avail. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I understand that the iPhoto library is a package and since WHS only support SMB, directly copying the library is not achievable. After reading on the internet attempts to get Time Machine working on WHS, I tried to create disk images (regular, sparse, and sparse bundle) but all three fails to get created when I tried.
Has anyone successfully kept their iPhoto library on a WHS server or has successfully created disk images on a WHS server? I would appreciate any pointers. Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk. If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

When emailing from iPhoto I keep on getting 'server not responded' message.

Would anyone be able to help with the issue I have with iPhoto. Every time I try to email photos directly from iPhoto I get this message 'server not responded'. I have the lates Mountain Lion OSX installed on MBA. Also, in addition to iCloud account I tried to add two more email accounts to iPhoto hoping that this might solve the problem, but it didn't. Would anyone have any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

This way you will be able to mail your photos directly from iPhoto, but you cannot use the iPhoto cards; use the Mail Photo stationary instead, once the mail panel opens.
For some reason mailing using iPhoto as Mailer works for me only, if I am mailing from my iCloud accoun,t and if Mail is set to use the iCloud account by default.

I've been having this problem too, but here's the catch: originally it was only with my dad, and only sometimes. Now it's dad and husband, every time! Pix go through, via imessage, to everyone else, and they go through to dad/husband if I "send as text" after it fails.
And the other annoying thing- the blue bar will run all the way, and it will say "delivered". So I close out of imessage. When I reopen it again, the "delivered" has changed to "not delivered" with the red exclamation point. I just googled "imessage not sending photos" and founds TONS of people with the same problem, but no solutions. (I have rebooted phone, reset network settings, with no luck. I even had to backup/delete/restore my whole phone the other day for a different reason, and hoped that would fix it, but now it won't send to my dad OR my husband (who is on not just the same carrier, but the same family plan as me)

IPhoto Library migration to windows server

Hello!
I know this has been discussed but I was unable to find it again.
Due to my massive amount of pictures, I have run out of space on my iMac's internal hard drive.
I would like to move my iPhoto library over to my Home Server which runs Windows Home Server (Go figure)
When I try to do such a thing it says invalid file format?
SO - 1) is iPhoto capable of doing this?
1a) If not, is Aperture capable?
1b) If Aperture is, how do I accomplish this?

The iPhoto and Aperture libraries must live on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). What you can do is run a Referenced Library, with the Masters stored on the server. For a variety of reasons you really, really don't want to use iPhoto in this configuration. It's pretty straightforward to do this with Aperture's Relocate Masters command - check out the help.

Go to iPhoto's Accounts preference pane, delete the email account and add it back.
The better solution, IMO, is to set Mail as iPhoto's email client in iiPhoto's General preference pane. That gives you better access to your Contacts, a sent copy and templates similar to iPhoto's in the stationary section of Mail.

IPhoto Share Email The email server didn't recognize your username/password combination.

I have deleted the email and re-adding it I still get the error. I have logged out of mobileme and deleted the old mobileme section in iPhoto > Preferences. I deleted all the .plist files in the Library > Preferences folder to no avail. I'm choosing the iCloud account not MobileMe and it just won't work.

Indeed, you can email photos direct from iPhoto. That's what the Share option is all about. I don't know what Brb8910 is thinking.

How do I stop iPhoto from auto-launching?

I'm running the latest version of OS X and iPhoto, this has been going on for 2 years or more and I still can't figure out a solution. So I figured maybe something new is out there where someone might have a clue why I'm experiencing this.
I cannot keep iPhoto from launching on my Mac. I'm not plugging in any peripherals, there is no event taking place that is causing iPhoto to logically launch, I'm not connecting a camera or USB stick or anything. It just launches. It's like an app version of the Walking Dead, I can't kill this **** thing and I have not yet figured out how to put a stake through its brain. I like iPhoto when I actually want to use it, which is rarely. But it loads when I first boot up (even though it is NOT listed in my startup apps), and if I quit it, between 10-60 minutes later I'll be typing away working on something and boom, it just launches again. There's no pattern to it, it just won't stay quit.
Ayone have any clue why this might be happening? I've really grown to hate this app.

Frank, it does it at 2 different "times":
First, EVERY time I reboot, iPhoto launches.
Second, just randomly, but usually within 20-30 minutes after I've quit the application. In fact, it just did it again.
So, I went to the Console to see if there was anything there and there was a bunch, but I've no idea what it means. Lots of references of mdworker. I'll paste the relevant sections of the Console below, maybe it means something to someone smarter than me. One line of it that repeats that I find interesting is this:

anywhere, here it is. iPhoto relaunched at about 1:04 or so.

Lion Server for Home use reality check

Hi All,
as many others I had the best intentions buying Lion Server for my home network (5 Macs, 2 iPads, 2 iPhones) to manage everything.
It was destined to be a central server for user management, configuration management, home directories, file server, software update server, web server and Time Machine server and possible VPN gateway to my home network.
I did not intended to use as Address Book, iCal, Mail server as I use iCloud. I just don't see the point of iChat, Podcast, Wiki server for my home use.
Anyway the bits I had to abandon so far are:
configuration management - Profile Manager works only sometimes and is sluggish to say the least
home directories - the home sync just doesn't work for Mac libraries such as iPhoto and iTunes
software update server - worked, broke, fixed, worked, broke, fixed, ... going away with Mountain Lion.
What works for me is user management, file server, web server and Time Machine backup, haven't gotten around to test VPN yet.
Given that Mountain Lion is coming next month and presumably I'll have to buy new license for the Server version I am not sure if it's worth it.
As I see it using a plain vanilla Lion or Mountain Lion system I can still do file server, web server and Time Machine backup. What I'd lose is the user management and I am not sure about VPN on a non-Server system but not really important. User management is a one time task for 5 Macs that's it.
Would be interested to hear opinions from you folks about pros / cons of using a plain Lion or Mountain Lion OS X for server tasks vs Server version?
Anything I am missing here?

That's probably true but also within that lies a major problem how this is positioned "The Server for Everyone". I am in IT and know what a DNS is. Most home users would NOT have a DNS running as it's not necessary not even talking about SSL certificates. I think this is a major problem here that it market incorrectly.

It's not so much a network bandwidth problem but the fact that home sync doesn't work for package files such as iPhoto, etc. Many people have confirmed that that home sync actually corrupts those files.

Don't intend to do terminal but for example take "File Sharing". It's an Server option but every Mac also has file sharing under the "Sharing Settings". As far as I can tell the server actuallty is just an overlay over the Mac sharing option because if I define a file share it's also updated in the sharing option.
Same thing goes for the Webserver. Hence I am thinking that Server really only is a central console for some basic services that can also be available by using standard OS X functionality.

Mac Mini vs router + server

Hi,
I'm doing some research about the benefits or the Mac Mini with server.
What im aiming for is buying a Mac mini, install OS X Server on it. Connect it directly to the modem and use the Mac mini as a wifi router with built in server options. Integrate it with a firewall and VPN with my devices.
Id like to have some opinion from the hardcore apple users.
Is the wireless card strong enough to compete with a router?
Would the security a router provides be stronger and safer than a server with additional firewall and antivirus software?
Is it possible to tunnel my VPN connection from my iDevices from outside the local network (like 4LTE, 3G, Wifi at a friends house) to my VPN server at home, continued by tunneling my VPN from the server at home (Mac Mini) to my paid VPN Server (company)
Would it be possible to connect with my iDevices to my Mac Mini and use it as a regular computer, even outside of the home network?
I assume that I can externally expand the storage capacity by plugging in an external HDD through USB or Thunderbolt, is this correct?
Can I setup Time Machine on the server to save backups from my MacBooks?
I want to setup my own cloud so I have all my photos, documents and videos in one place, compared to limited storage (unless paid) on Cloud companies. Is it possible to setup my iDevices so they store new pictures and videos in my cloud at home, instead of the iCloud Dive space
What I would like to accomplish with this is creating a single device that provides several purposes related with my iDevices, in and outside it's network.
Including:
Serve as a Wifi router to provide the SSID
VPN service (within and from outside the SSID)

Is all of this realistic? What are the downsides of setting it up like this, vs a router with a server connected to it.

I'll bite.
I will preface this by saying that I am not a fan of OS X as a NAT device. Apple removed all easy configuration back with the release of 10.7. While it still can be done, you really must have a passion for tinkering to make it work. Now, there is IceFloor. If you are considering using the Mac as the NAT device, then IceFloor can ease the pain of configuration. That being said, I still believe that it is best to isolate and separate your devices into distinct roles. A firewall is designed to be a firewall. It does that job and does it solely well. OS X Server is a general purpose server. It is capable of many things but it does not necessarily excel at being a NAT appliance. Also, firewalls are generally easier to setup and configure than OS X Server when considering NAT roles and policies.
All that being said, OS X Server is a capable and very affordable solution that works exceptionally well for all Apple environments.
Before continuing, I should point out that you should investigate your residential ISP's policies regarding hosting services. If you are in the US, there are many ISPs that block http and smtp on residential services. Some block additional ports. Plus, if you have a dynamic service then you likely should be looking at dynamic DNS to ensure that you can always reach your server. If you have a dynamic service, this is all the more reason to put OS X Server behind a firewall appliance. OS X, especially for services like Open Directory, Profile Manager, and others, really only work properly when the server has a fixed IP address. If this is not possible on primary route connection, you will struggle with certain services. Placing the device on a LAN and allowing a firewall to handle everything else is a much better solution.

This is arguing between 6 in one hand and a half dozen in the other. Two identically configured solutions result in the same level of security. Or lack thereof. The nice part about a firewall is that it assumes everything is bad unless you explicitly allow it. With OS X, it generally thinks everything is good unless you explicitly deny it. (this is a gross simplification of the situation so you weigh your options) A firewall appliance will likely provide additional services that are easy to configure and also provide more logging and reporting regarding what is happening. Again, I am partial to the firewall.
3: Is it possible to tunnel my VPN connection from my iDevices from outside the local network (like 4LTE, 3G, Wifi at a friends house) to my VPN server at home, continued by tunneling my VPN from the server at home (Mac Mini) to my paid VPN Server (company)
So, you want to be out of your house, create a VPN into your home network, and then be able to traverse to your office? Why not connect direct to the office? How does routing through your home benefit the situation? Regardless, anything is possible. But, the tunnel from your home to the office would need to be built and persistent. Thus, you can remote into your home network. Let's say your home network is 10.0.20.0/24 and your office is 172.16.0.1/24. Your home would build a tunnel to the office. Then the VPN service would advertise the 172.16.0.1/24 route (as well as the 10.0.20.0/24 network) to the client devices, allowing them to access resources on both networks. Then you can request resources on your company network because the route will be provided by the VPN connection.

This is another one of my dislikes. Everything has a role and a purpose. Your server is a server, not a workstations. Workstations get rebooted, generally are updated more frequently, run various software and perform varied tasks. Servers have a narrower purpose. I am not a fan of using a server as a workstation. This gets particularly muddy of you are doing file services or need services than must loop back to the server itself. Can you use the server as a workstation? Sure, what is stopping you. Should you? In my opinion, no. Let a Firewall be a firewall. Let a server be a server. Let a workstation be a workstation. Together, they will live in harmony.

Yes. Thunderbolt is fast. USB 3 is not terrible. Stay away from Firewire at this point. Get something that supports RAID. Remember, RAID is not backup. All it does is provide drive level redundancy.
6: Can I setup Time Machine on the server to save backups from my MacBooks?
Yes. OS X Server provides Time Machine server. Figure out what you want to backup (data only or the whole drive) and then calculate a capacity requirement. While not as critical as in the past, I still prefer isolating Time Machine backup volumes. I tend not to storage any other data there.

Hmm. So, ah. No. Yes. Well not really. Not easy like iCloud. That is integrated and generally "just works." There is nothing stopping you from manually storing all your content in this location and then sharing it out. But there is no way to redirect an image from your phone to magically appear on your own server. Unless you are using photo stream and you have iPhoto set up on the server. But then we get back to the workstation vs server argument I just had with myself and around I go in a circle. You can create your own storage. But there is effort here. You have WebDAV, Portfolio/Cumulus, and other services and solutions.
So to wrap up...
Serve as a Wifi router to provide the SSID
VPN service (within and from outside the SSID)
Cloud Storage available to my iDevices (within and from outside the SSID)
Time Machine
Using the internal WiFi will only frustrate you. Get an access point and you will get better coverage, better control, and more features. OS X supports two VPN types. PPTP and L2TP. Both will work through a NAT. Both are natively supported on OS X and iOS. Building your own Cloud is the most daunting and vague area. And Time Machine is cake.
Is all of this realistic? What are the downsides of setting it up like this, vs a router with a server connected to it.
Is building a server sitting on a LAN with a firewall realistic? It is done everyday and nearly every network is doing the same thing. All of the above is my take on the topic but I focus on businesses and organizations. These types of setups get a firewall. Then the server is protected behind an umbrella of protection. If you go the mini alone route, you have lower cost by higher difficulty. If you get the individual pieces then you have higher cost but simpler setup and management.

Workflow: Camera - Aperture - iPhoto

Hi there, some questions regarding the workflow that I use. Like everything, it has its ups and its downs. What I´m trying to do - of course - is to eliminate the downs. Please feel free to comment.
1 - Shooting in RAW
I use a Nikon D200 for photography. I have this set to shoot in RAW. This gives me maximum quality and flexibility afterwards. Yes, the files are large, but with the prices of memory cards, this is no problem (for me). I have my camera set up in the AdobeRGB (1998) color space, although shooting in RAW does not assign a color profile to the files, as far as I know.
2 - Processing in Aperture
I import the files in Aperture. This Apple program gives me the possibility to totally work in RAW (I ahrdly ever use Photoshop any more). In the import step, an AdobeRGB (1998) color profile is assigned to the pictures. I have my monitor calibrated (Colorvision), so the camera and monitor profile work together to show me the exact image.
3 - Export from Aperture to network disk cabinet (NAS)
When I´m finished adjusting the pictures in Aperture, I use the export function to make JPG copies and store the JPG´s on a network attached storage (disk cabinet). I later use to JPG´s in iPhoto.
Question - What image resolution should I use to create the JPG´s. I have read all sorts of confusing stuff about pixels and DPI and how these things are not the same. What I want, is to have iPhoto display the pictures in a good quality, without taking too long to load them. Which resolution do you guys think I should use?
The original photo´s - still in RAW - are kept in Aperture. When I want to make prints, I do this from Aperture, using the RAW pictures. I later save the Aperture projects as containers to my NAS.
4 - Showing off in iPhoto
I import the JPG´s from my NAS. I do not copy the files to the library, but have iPhoto point to the NAS-based files.
Question - Do you people have all your pictures stored in the library? The library seems to get really really big...... but maybe there are some advantages that I do not see right now. A possible advantage would be, that by copying the picturews in the library, there is a possibility to link a color profile to them. Does anyone have a nice comparison of pro´s and cons of both possibilities?
I use iPhoto to show my stuff through Front Row. Of course, my NAS has to be running... Hmmmm maybe that would be another advantage of storing the pictures directly in the library...
I bought iLife 08 a few days ago and als got a .MAc account, so now I also have the possibility to create web galleries. Great stuff !!
Question - Am I correct that there is no possibility to decide on the resolution of the pictures on the gallery? So, which resolution are they?
Question - I assume that, when I create a gallery, the pictures are copied from my computer (iPhoto library) to a .Mac server so that everyone can see them without my computer having to be running?

Terence, thanks for your quick reaction. Let me try to clarify the situation.
In my workflow, I try to separate between processing and digital publishing.
*For processing*, I use Aperture. For this, I import pictures into a project in Aperture, and I do all sorts of actions on them until I'm satisfied with the results. In this proces, I work in RAW. I also show the pictures that I'm working on to the relevant people (clients, friends) in Aperture slideshows. While I work in Aperture, the pictures are stored inside the Aperture library which is on my local harddrive. I use a vault to make backups while I'm in the processing stage.
When I'm thru with processing. what I want to do is get (selected) pictures into iPhoto. I want these to be in a good quality, taking into account that most of the time, I will be showing them digitally thru Front Row, a iPhoto slideshow or in a web gallery. Of course, these pictures need not be in RAW quality. I think, a decent JPG quality will do just fine. Remember, if I want to make prints, I use Aperture since this has far better controls.
I use a NAS to store all my relevant stuff. I have several shares set up on the NAS, like "media", "backup" and home shares for different users (mostly private users but also my business user, I'm self-employed).
So, for example, when I listen to music thru iTunes, it actually points to music on the NAS. Therefor, my NAS has to be running. This is a downside of the NAS solution. Pro's of using a NAS are, for me:
- it is a RAID disk cabinet, so with extra security built-in;
- the local harddrive in my iMac would be too little to hold all my stuff (since I'm a music purist, I do not compress my music so the files are rather large....)
So, for *digital publishing* the pictures, I thought it would be wise to have the pictures on my NAS. In this way, they are on a safe RAID cabinet and also, it keeps the iPhoto library from getting too large.
When I have exported the JPG's out of Aperture and maybe have made prints, I save the Aperture project as a container on my NAS and then I delete the Apeerture project. After that, I use iPhoto to show the stuff.
So, I cannot point iPhoto to the Aperture, because that would mean that I would have to keep all pictures inside the Aperture.
Am I doing something stupid here?

IPhoto fails to open with Yosemite

Hello everyone,
Since my last update of iPhoto (V 9.6) on my MacBook Pro 17 "(2011) running Yosemite: it stops during the opening of the photo library [iPhoto (not responding) in "Force applications to leave dialog"]. My tests and observations:
-The Repair permissions utility changes nothing...
-Opening of an "iPhoto library" newly created does not work more...
-My normal library (which does not open) opens fine on my other Mac : A Mac Pro 2014 running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6 (same versions so).
-The regeneration of all iPhoto elements into libraries (general and user one) does not change anything either...
-iPhoto Library permissions are OK (R / W for everybody and current user)

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If the new library fails like the current one does do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete the contents the following folder: User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: For Mavericks and Yosemite, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
