IPhoto on Mavericks won't open my photos!

I recently updated to Mavericks from Leopard and I went ahead and purchased the iPhoto App. I had my old iPhoto library copied on my Passport like the Apple guy told me to when I installed the new OS. I then went to open the library and it prompted me to rebuild it...so I downloaded the software and did just that. Now my library shows in iPhoto but when I click on a photo to view it does this
ANY IDEA WHAT TO DO??? I have 13,000 photos I don't want to lose them because I was told to do the wrong thing

That means that iPhoto cannot find the original file.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

It’s part of the basic install of OS X. So unless you deleted it then it’s there in your apps folder. If you have deleted it, it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. You will be able to extract the installation package using Pacifist.
Alternatively, if you’re using almost any camera +apart from a Canon+ then the camera card is visible on the desktop and you can drag the movie to the desktop using the Finder and import from there.
No matter what camera you use, if you pop the card from it into a USB Card Reader then it will be accessible via the Finder. Card Readers are inexpensive and all round a better idea.
    Why use a Card Reader?
Because it’s safer: Less risk of your images being lost if your camera shuts down during transfer.
Because it saves the battery on your camera
Because it saves wear and tear on your camera ports
    Because it’s almost always faster.

I am having the same problem.  I even changed my password and updated all of my security information.  Now it just gives me an error and retry message, which of course also does not work.  Went to support and was going to open a chat (seemed the simpler option) and received a message that my support has expired for this serial number unless I want to pay $29.00.  So I chose the option to call later, which was the exact time suck I was trying to avoid.  Why wouldn't the new operating system also update the apps that were already part of my old platform?

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • Tried to open iPhoto after update to yosemite, won't open/no photos??

Recent update to Yosemite, iPhoto won't open,,,,,,are all my pictures lost??

Your pictures are probably not lost, but still safe in your iPhoto Library.
But the big problem is, that you will need iPhoto 9.6.1 - that is the only compatible version for Yosemite. If you did not purchase this version before yesterday, you cannot purchase it any longer, because Apple stopped selling iPhoto at the App Store.
Try, if the AppStore will let you update iPhoto from the Updates page of the AppStore, this might be possible, if iPhoto is showing among your Purchases on the Purchased page.
Otherwise, make a backup of your iPhoto Library and then open it in the new Photos.app. Launch Photos while holding down the alt/optionss key and select your iPhoto Library. This will migrate the iPhoto Library to a Photos library and let you browse your photos.

  • Iphoto default library won't open

I've been having iPhoto problems, and after all the research.... I've found that my computer STILL DOES have my photos!!! (hallelujah) I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager & the "missing photos" are in my "DEFAULT" folder on iphoto, containing a couple thousand pictures and whatnot. Ex:
HOWEVER, (this is what is giving me the biggest issue), I can't open that default library!!! I know that it's still there, the pictures are in there.... I just cannot open the Default library! I clicked on "launch iPhoto" and it asked me to choose a library to launch. A whole bunch of rebuild libraries popped up, but not my DEFAULT library that I need to open! Ex:
Why isn't my DEFAULT library popping up in this table? And how can I open this library? I've been "missing" these photos for weeks now, and have been searching high and low for answers. I am finally so close! Found the pics, but can't retrieve them! Help! -

I know, that's the library I want... But it won't open how can I open it?

  • My photos were updated and now won't open, My photos were updated and now won't open

I loaded photos and the message popped up to upgrade them in order to save them.  I hit "ok", and now the library won't open with the message to use the latest version.  I currently have 8.1.2.  Is there a newer version that works with OS 10.6.8 ?  If so where do I find it ? If not, how do I open the library?
      Thanks.

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I have a library (Library6.iPhoto) and it won't open...

I tried to open it and it said I needed to update my iphoto, which then led me to updating my operating system.  I still cannot open the library.  HELP!
I tried to hold the command and option keys down while opening the library, and it brought me to the repair window.  I get asked if I would like to import the photos into iphoto, but then they are still not there.  I have tried to use iphoto library manager, but it doesn't recognize the library.  I hate that one day I can open my photos fine and then the next day they are all of a sudden corrupted.
    Please Help me!

Library6.iPhoto is a file that's located inside your iPhoto library  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select your library in the window that comes up:
Do you get the same results?  If so then apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #4 followed by #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
Now if you're still getting that Do you want to import photos message open the iPhoto Library with the Finder as shown in this screenshot:
Look for a folder titled "Import" or "Importing'.  If there is one move it to the Desktop.  If there is no folder named as such look inside the Auto Import folder and move the contents to the Desktop. DO NOT MAKE ANY OTHER CHANGES TO THE CONTENTS OF THE IPHOTO LIBRARY.
Launch iPhoto and the message should be gone.  Check the contents of the folder you moved to the library to see if any of those photos are ones you want to keep and import.  Otherwise delete them from the Desktop.

  • IPhoto library DVD won't open after installing iLife '06

Apple Care recently prompted me to erase and reinstall. After doing so, I installed iLife '06. My iPhoto library was backed up to a DVD. How do I now import those photos into my new iPhoto? When I insert the DVD, I get the message "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto - You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto." Now what?

  • IPhoto '08 Library won't open in OSX 10.6.7

I have moved an iPhoto '08 library to a new iMac running OSX 10.6.7 and I can't get the library to open - any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance....
    Sunny in Eugene, Oregon

I backed up the user to an external hard drive then dragged the iPhoto Library into her Pictures file. When I open iPhoto, I get 2 error messages:  "To use iPhoto '11 you need to upgrade your photo library" - I click on "continue to upgrade. Simultaneously I get another message saying: "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto...Please quit & use the latest version".... I AM using the latest version??? Huh?
    Thank for any help.....

  • I downloaded 1100 photos from Kodak Easy Share to Iphoto. Now when I open the photo events in the photo library, a thumbnail screen of all the pictures appears. However, when I click on a thumbnail photo to enlarge it, a lock symbol appears. Help!

I downloaded 1100 photos from Kodak Easy Share to the Iphoto library. Now when I open

If Larry's suggestion re iPLM doesn't help there's always the last ditch effort solution:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Pages on Mavericks won't open downloaded Google Drive docs

How can I force Mavericks to let Pages open downloaded Google Drive docs?
I installed Mavericks and then reverted back to iWork 09 but Pages now won't open files in .docx format that I download from Google Drive.
    I get error:
The document “5TThinkPiece.docx” couldn’t be opened.
This is one of the biggest #firstworldproblems I can imagine; if Mavericks isn't comptatible with Google Drive then the Mac has to go, because Gdrive > Computer.

I had the same problem, but fixed it.
Having bought the CD-ROM with iWork way back updates for this does not appear automatically in Mavericks App Store. However, after downloading the update for iWork here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1563?viewlocale=en_US
    - Pages works like a charm again when it comes to opening all kind of Word documents.
Hope this will help you also.

  • IPhoto and iDVD won't open after I reinstalled iLife '08

I was unhappy with iMovie '08, so I tried to load an older version from my iLife '05. However, it copied over all of my iLife '08 apps. delete all of your iLife applications and your iLife receipts - do not do anything with your iPhoto library
Install iLife '08 and go to the Apple downloads page and download iPhoto 06 (a free download for iLife '08 owners) and install it and you will have the best of both worlds iLife '08 and iMovie 06
