IPhoto on Time Capsule won't open

When I am connected to my network at home (Time Capsule) and try to open iPhoto it freezes, I get the spinning wheel of death and have to force quit.
It does not happen when connected to other networks. Anyone else having this issue. I have been to Apple Bar twice and they are perplexed.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you trying to open the library that has been backed up by Time Machine or a library that you placed on the Time Capsule manually outside of the backup folders? If it's the former then I'm not surprised as that version would be composed of many hard links to other files on the TC from earlier backups and is not designed to be run like a normal library.
Have you ever been able to open that library? The reports in the forum about running iPhoto off of a TC or drive attached to an Airport Express wireless router have all been that they were not able to do so. iPhoto just doesn't do well wirelessly and can lead to damaging the library if the connection is dropped while writing to the library's database file.
I've run a library off of a FW hard drive connected to another Mac and commected to my MBP wirelessly via an AirPort Express and it ran OK. But I only viewed some photos and didn't do any heavy duty editing, etc.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Time Capsule don't open

    Hi guys!
    I REALLY YOUR HELP!
My Time Capsule won't "open". I can't get into my backup. I'm using Lion 10.7.4, my Time Capsule is the 4th Gen with 7.6.1 version and Airport is 6.1 (610.31).
Anyone had the same issue? Tried to get by cable and wireless, tried to reset and to set back to Original Settings, nothing seems to work.

Isolate a computer and the TC from any network.. ie turn off the wireless in the computer.. connect LAN port of TC to the computer using standard ethernet cable.. Press and hold the reset for 10sec until the front LED begins flashing rapidly..
Check that the computer got an IP in the range 10.0.1.x if not make sure the connectivity led is on .. if not try a different port on the TC.. try a different computer.
If the computer is not set to dhcp automatic IP set to that..
If it continues to fail, take the TC to the apple store for testing.

  • Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change.

Just migrated using time machine from MacBook Pro to older Macbook. iPhoto 9.4.3 won't open. Tried reinstall - no change. (Mac OS X 10.7.5)

Did you migrate the app from Time Machine? Reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
The reference to NovaMedia is that there is the remanant of an older app in there somewhere that won't run on 10.7

My Time Capsule won't allow me to access my home wireless network for several hours each day -- usually between 1000-1830 or so. My modem is working correctly and I can still get on-line by going straight from my computer (MacBook Pro) to the Ethernet port. It must be the Time Capsule -- any ideas?

    Any ideas?
    Wireless Interference
Might be caused by a cordless phone in the vicinity. To give you an example, my neighbor.....across the street...used to be able to literally crash my wireless network if he was in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
I discovered this by accident one day after spending weeks trying figure out why my network would crash at random times.
Other possibilities include a wireless security/camera system near you
Still other things might be an amateur ham radio operator....which should not interfere....but again from experience, I know that this can occur.
Yet another possibility is another wireless network near you that is being turned on and off at random times. Some users power up their modem/router only when they want to do so and leave it off otherwise.
Some general rules to help avoid interference:
Move any cordless phones that you might have as far away as possible from the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid placing other electronic devices....computer, television, amplifier, satellite receiver, etc. near the Time Capsule and/or your computer(s)
Avoid metal surfaces near the Time Capsule and/or your computers
Elevate the Time Capsule as much as possible. Think of it as a water sprinkler....you want to get the room as wet as possible
Experiment with different wireless channels on the Time Capsule. To do this:
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the Time Capsule
    Click Edit
    Click the Wireless tab
    Click Wireless Options
Start with Channel 11 on the 2.4 GHz band and work your way down
It is unlikely that you are picking up interference on the 5 GHz band since there are.....for now at least.....far fewer networks using this frequency.

  • My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for.

My Time Capsule won't allow my computer to back up.  It says it is already in use but that is what it is being used for. It has been working fine for years.  All of a sudden I keep getting a message that TC (time capsule) cannot complete back up as it is already in use.  I am doing the backups automatically through Time Capsule.

Restart the Time Capsule by disconnecting and reconnecting the power adapter. When it's back online, open the AirPort Utility application and check to see whether there's a firmware update for it.

  • Time Capsule won't connect to network after factory reset

    Hello
I have reset my time capsule back to factory settings, After this was completed the time capsule will no longer connect to my network.
When airport utility is launched the app will search for the time capsule. Then when the app is gathering information at the reading previous settings stage air port utility quits unexpectedly (There is a report, this can be attached if any one needs it)
The light on the time capsule is flashing amber.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
Im running a mac book pro with lion 10.7.3
    Cheers Dan

If you reset the Time Capsule back to Factory Default Settings, the Time Capsule is now broadcasing a default wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxxx.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and make sure that you are logged onto that network....no password is required.
    Then, open AirPort Utility.
You should see the xxxxxx number displayed in the upper left hand corner of the window when you click on Other AirPort Base Stations
Or, if you do not want to connect using wireless for the configuration, temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the three LAN <-> ports on the back of the Time Capsule and then open AirPort Utility.
If you still experience issues, check to make sure that you are following Apple's instructions for the default reset in this support document:
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
We have also seen reports from users about difficulties with the new version of AirPort Utility.
Download and install the full feature version of AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to see if that will work.

  • Time Capsule won't mount after upgrade to iTunes 9

See my full post in the Time Capsule support section ("Help! Time Capsule won't mount after installing iTunes 9"). My music library is on my Time Capsule, but after installing iTunes 9, it won't mount on my iMac G5. I can use the internet, but the disk won't mount. My Powerbook hasn't been updated yet and the Time Capsule mounts fine.

To make it easier, here's the post:
"My music library is on my 500 Gb Time Capsule. I just installed iTunes 9 on my iMac. It updated my library and synced my iPhone. Now, the TC won't mount. I still have internet connectivity, but I can't access my media or print to my printer connected to the TC. I can use the computer and everything, but if I hover my mouse over the TC disks menu bar icon, I get the spinning beach ball there. If I try to connect using my Network icon in the sidebar, it allows me to log in and get to the screen to select the volume I want to mount, then stops responding. In the Activity Monitor, AFP Client & AirPort Base Station Agent are not responding. I also have a Powerbook G4 w/Leopard (10.5.8) which hasn't been updated to iTunes 9 yet. The Time Capsule mounted fine on it."

  • My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

My 1st Generation time capsule won't connect to the internet thru a new motorola sb6121 - get continuously flashing yellow light. Using a router in between the modem and capsule yields good but slower connection to internet. Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • Since I've installed F4, about 50% of the time it won't open.

Windows Vista is my OS. Since I've installed F4, about 50% of the time it won't open, despite the fact that it's listed as a process in the task mgr. I get no error message and have no trouble opening Google or IE. It happens when I've just turned my computer on and when it's already on and I go open F4 to do something. To rectify, I have to either reboot my computer (sometimes multiple times) or actually uninstall and reinstall F4.

I have found that the example given in this thread
"... you would need three smtp servers in your smtp server list, smtp.goddaddy.com:username1, smtp.goddaddy.com:username2, and smtp.goddaddy.com:username3"
also has issues. It appears that the Mail program gets confused if there are identical SMTP server names (and user names that are identical in the first 8 characters) in the list. I had a situation where I had smtp.goddaddy.com:username1, smtp.mac.com:username2, and smtp.goddaddy.com:username3. When trying to send mail from username3's account I kept getting the "can't send mail from SMTP server smtp.goddaddy.com:username1" error message. The message indicated to me that the program had confused the SMTP servers for username1 and username3. Also, the SMTP server for username3 was not in the drop down list available from the error message window from which you get the opportunity to change SMTP server designations. Account preferences looked good and the server list from there also contained the correct information. I changed the the server designation for username3 to smtp.gopapa.com:username3 (my ISP has alternate server designations) and everything works fine.

  • Time Capsule won't back up, privilege message error HELP!

Time Capsule used to work, now it doesn't.
    1) I go to System Preferences > Time Machine
    2) I click on Change Disk...
    3) Window drops down and I select my Time Capsule, then click on Use for Backup
    4) Window pops up saying "Enter your user name and password so Time Machine can access the file server "name of my Time Capsule". No field for user name, just Password - so I enter this and click on Connect.
    5) Drop down window appears saying: "The specified user does not have read, write and append privileges on this network volume. Please connect as a different user or contact your network administrator."
Thing is - I am the admin.
Can't figure out how to rectify this. Have already tried restoring factory settings to Time Capsule but run into same problem.
    Any ideas?

Exact same problem. In addition, Time Capsule won't let me create new folders in the root (/data) folder anymore, although I can still read and write files in already existing folders.
I thought it was because I upgraded to Snow Leopard, so I did a clean install of Leopard OS on my Mac Pro with erasing the HDD, but still no luck.

  • Iphoto 8.1.2 won't open

iphoto 8.1.2 won't open. The error message says "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
My version is Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks
    JC

Two possibilities - the message is correct or is incorrect
If you have opened your iPhoto library with a newer version of iPhoto (over a netwrok or any other way) you were warned that it would be converted and could not be used by an older version - in that case you must either upgrade, restore a backup from before you upgraded teh library or use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to "doengrade" the library
If you have not opened it with a newer version then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library

  • Having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

having trouble with time capsule, won't find backups

Usually a simple reboot will work.. Reboot the TC..
If that is not enough.. Restart the whole network from off.
Mountain Lion and to a lesser extent Lion.. have network issues and lose track of the TC.

  • Iphoto and time capsule

My family and I want to access and edit all of our photos that are currently stored on time capsule. She has a laptop, I have a laptop, our family has an imac and iphones. We want to have the changes that we make to the pictures (red-eye correction, contrast, brightness, etc) to be reflected on the time capsule file so that when another one of us goes to print or make a slideshow those changes will take place on another computer because it is all stored on the time capsule. Also, we don't need to store all this info on our computers. Is there anyway to do this with iphoto and time capsule? Apple is usually pretty good about integrating things, but I can't figure out how to do it.
Is there a plug-in that will allow me to do this? Can someone make one?
Google Picasa allows us to do this, which is phenomenal. We are eagerly waiting for Google Picasa for Mac to come out for this feature alone. Thank you for any comments

You could look into multi user image management applications likeMedia Expression. It would let you put the source files on the server and each user have their own catalog of thumbnails linked to the source files. EM lets you rename files, add metadata to the files, etc. But if you're going to stick with iPhoto and want to have everyone have full editing rights in the library you'll have to put the library on an external HD formatted for OS X Extended (Journaled).
