IPhoto opens and freezes.

New MacBook Air with Leopard. All applications work fine but iphoto refuses to open. How can I reinstall?

Linsford:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First try the following:
1 - repair disk permissions.
2 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
See if either of the above will help.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

It sounds like your iPhone is being recognized everywhere but in iTunes. I would use the troubleshooting for that issue in the following article, named:

  • IPhoto opening and downloading from camera

Two problems: When I open iPhoto from Applications or from Dock, it doesn't open. I can search for a file and find one that is already in a file but am unable to get into the organize/edit/ library. Also, when downloading from my camera, the files do not go into the library. I can find the photo files by clicking on the camera icon, but i have to open them one by one. They do not just download and open in my iPhoto Library.

re: "There is nothing in Image Capture! Now?"
By "nothing in Image Capture", what exactly do you mean?
Did you open Image Capture and then go to the Image Capture Menu in your top menu bar then select its preferences and click on the "Camera" tab of its preferences and then click on the pop up menu and select which application (iPhoto?) to open when a camera is connected? Or is iPhoto selected and still does not open when you connect your camera?

  • Garageband not opening and freezing system

    Hello all,
I post here as a "last resort"... So i'm really hoping i can get an answer to my problem.
I've been working with Garageband for years and never had any problems.
Upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.8 a few months ago and also went from iLife9 to iLife11.
    Since, everything is working swell.
Suddenly, a few days ago, while launching Garageband, it's just impossible to make it start. The "initialization" is never ending and somehow freezes the whole system, meaning, it's freezes the whole MAC.
I suspected probably the jam packs, deleted them. Did a lot of research online, and i deleted the preferences and did the permissions repairs on disk utilities. and still not working.
I also have Logic Pro8, tried opening it, freezing the same way. So, i uninstalled Logic, garageband still freezing. I also deleted ALL the new apps (which are not many) that i've downloaded in the last two months, still nothing...
Tried using another user, same problem persists.
I cannot really delete everything since i do not have the iLife11 disk so i might not get my hands on garageband if i uninstall it. Also, i'm not even sure that would solve the problem.
Does anyone know what the problem might be and/or what i should do?
Would the Apple Store Genius Bar help me out with this?
Thanks to everyone for your support,
    John

the exact same thing happens on mine, havent a clue what it is or what I should do.

  • Iphoto crashing and freezing after installing osx 10.6

    Hi everyone
I have just installed osx 10.6. Everything works fine except for iphoto. It opens alright but when I try to work with a photo, my mac mini goes psychedelic (water colour pixels?) and eventually freezes.
After re-booting manually through power switch. iphoto fires up again but when I try to edit photo, the whole machine freezes.
    so far, I have tried:
    disk repair
    disk permission repair
    safe boot
    re=building iphoto library
    but no luck.
    Any ideas, anyone?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards

  • IPhoto opens and a white screen appears with no photos

Hi when I open iPhoto it appears on my screen but is white with no photos and then it shuts down. I was just using iphoto last night and everything worked fine. I have over several thousands of photos and do not want to lose them. I know the photos have not been deleted because I can find them on iMovie.
How can I fix iPhoto so it works properly without shutting down?

    Hello Twehrly,
It seems you are unable to access iPhoto due to it crashing. That would concern me as well. The following article provides some steps you may want to explore:
OS X Yosemite: If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly
There are several suggestions to try.
If the app is frozen, force quit the app. Click the app’s window, then choose Apple menu > Force Quit. You can also press Option-Command (⌘)-Esc, select the app, then click Force Quit.
When you force an app to quit, you may lose unsaved changes.
If the app quit, reopen it by clicking Reopen in the dialog that appears.
Restart your Mac. For more information, see Restart your Mac.
Read the app’s documentation to check if it’s compatible with your version of OS X.
Open another file in the app. There may be a problem with the original file.
Check for updates to your software.
Disconnect any peripheral devices you just connected (for example, a printer). They may not be compatible with your version of OS X.
Uninstall any app plug-ins or enhancements from other manufacturers.
If you recently updated the app or OS X, a plug-in or enhancement you installed may no longer be compatible.
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These tools can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
Restart your Mac in safe mode. For more information, see Restart your Mac in safe mode.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Safari wont open and freeze my computer

    Hi there,
I have a issue with safari "version 8.0.4".
I click the app on my dock, the app jump as usual, but after 30 seconds, the computer freeze, the mouse curser still working, but I can't open anything or do anything, and I have to shut down my laptop via the power button.
If somebody can help, it would be well appreciate.
    Thank you.
I have a Mc Book pro 15 inch
    OS X Yosemite version 10.10.2

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • My itunes opens and freezes. I tried repeatedly to uninstall it so I could re-install it but it just gives me error messages. Please help!

My Itunes opens then just freezes. I have tried repeatedly and numerous ways to uninstall it so I could re-install it, but I just get error messages. If you have had this problem and resolved it please help!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
It would help us help you if you provided the exact text of any error messages.

  • Firefox was fast when I first started using. Now, very slow to open and freezes often. Frequent message is "Warning-unresponsive script". Do I need to switch back to Internet Explorer?

Switched from Internet Explorer because seemed slow. Firefox was fast at first. Then upgraded to Firefox 4 and frequently have trouble opening. Sometimes page doesn't open, or is very slow. If I try to open again I will get Mozilla Firefox Unresponsive or a message that say "Warning-Unresponsive Script". Often have to restart and do the whole thing again. Don't really want to switch back to Internet Explorer, but getting tired of taking a half hour to get into my emails!

I am having the same problem, but not sure what's causing the slow down. Restarting in safe mode fixes the performance problem... but disabling all plug ins and extensions in normal mode (and restarting firefox) still shows the bug. Any ideas?

  • Why does Mail open and freeze?

Just happened in the past 24 hours, I can open Mail but as soon as I move the cursor, it turns into a spinning wheel and I can't access any of the drop down menus.
    Help please!

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
    2. With no Internet connection.

  • IPhoto multiplying and freezing

    Hi folks
2 days ago my computer stated "start up disk full" and would not respond, took it into the Comp Dr and he loaded extra RAM and memory.
What is happening is the files in iphoto are multiplying, and have used up all my memory and I am back to where I was 3 days ago, with all memmory been used.
I only have 3000 photos and it has now produced over 500 000 photos using up all my memory and chocking my computer.
Once I start iphoto, it stalls my whole computer with the wheel of death, I cannot get into any application, I have to manually shut computer down. Overnight all 3TB of memory used up or which I only use approcah 40GB!
Any suggestions, HELP I need my computer back, have I a visus or corrupt files.

You need to clarify a few terms here. Memory is RAM, what the computer uses to manipulate data.
The Hard Disk is the Storage on the machine. Increasing the Ram makes no difference to the storage.
The 'Start Up DIsk is full' message means that you have no storage left, not RAM.
I'm not  sure what's gone wrong that it means your iPhoto Library is multiplying like that, but
    1. You need a minimum of 10 gigabytes of storage on your mac free at all times. This for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
    To move an iPhoto Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Once you have the iPhoto Library moved to the external disk we can look trying to fix it.
