IPhoto organization in iTunes? It IS supposed to be a LIBRARY you know.

When are we going to see some kind of multiple library function in iTunes similar to the way iPhoto is set up with "Events" organizing the photos. Having one gigantic list of songs that is the only way of viewing your main library (no playlists don't count) is now outdated. Imagine being to have a library for each person in your family all within ONE iTunes, that you can enter like a room? Maybe a cross between Magic Garageband and iPhoto in terms of interface, and an organization combination of Coverflow and Events?
For people who want to have a media center, all their families music in one library but don't want to have to sift through hundreds of Panic! At The Disco songs from your younger siblings when you want to see your own music, you may agree with me that the regular system of scrolling to see songs is as bad as the old iPhoto. Yeah, you can make more than one library, but the software can and has done better, home media organization needs to be the next big step.
Any ideas?

I hardly think expressing frustration and some possible solutions for a certain aspect of a software is 'complaining'. If it sounded like I was complaining I apologize. I actually like iTunes a lot, HOWEVER:
The problem with the way you (and many others) organize your 12,000-tune library (I have 15,000+, but this isn't a contest) is that like iPhoto 6 and earlier versions, the only way to organize/view the HOME location of your photos was in the huge long list of photos, which could be organized by date, title, film roll, etc. The issue has been fixed in iPhoto 7, by having "events", the home location of the photos in your iphoto interface can be viewed in the classic style of a long list, but also through smaller portals, "Events", which also lead you to the home location, rather than an organization of individual photos from different film rolls, which is essentially what an "album" is in iPhoto, or "Playlist" in iTunes.
The problem is not the file structure, the file structure of iTunes is perfect IMO. iTunes->iTunes Music->Artists->Albums->Songs. Perfect. It's just the interface, which has already in a conceptual sense been solved between garageband and iphoto. Some kind of combination of the "Audition" interface, and the classic list of songs, would be a cool way to view in a digital interface something more similar to a physical "Library". Of course, it'd have to be made in a less little-kid-game type of way, more streamlined and cool than simply entertaining. But if one could 'enter' into your library, or I guess, your 'room' of the library and view your music, then you could organize it all in one place and view it like the traditional iTunes library list we have now, while having multiple people's music in one Library, easily backed up, easily accessible with multiple iPods, it'd be great.
Also, it would give way to a iPhoto/Aperture type interface, where there are more buttons... a button for quick "Convert" file types for people who keep most of their library in Lossless but need to convert fast to fit on iPods (seeing how large personal computer HD's are getting hopefully more people will have Lossless-formated libraries in the near future), a button to add to iDisk on MobileMe or something, a button to view what playlists an individual song is currently included in, a button to publish a compilation to iWeb making some kind of Apple designed music-blog. Just something more dynamic, there's tons of cool things that could be built in. All the other iLife apps are super dynamic now, iTunes needs to catch up, at least for the Mac.
I hope I have described the problem well enough, and in at least a vague way described my solutions. Cheers.
Max
P.S. Additions: If there were some kind of "Event" type interface, where you could scroll back and forth over the key photo and view the album artworks (like the way you view the particular Event's photos in iPhoto), then it would bring an importance back to Album Artwork, which I've also posted about, and make viewing album artwork again regular part of listening to music. Not enough people use Coverflow yet, and hopefully as digital music develops, more people will legally obtain music (even if it's free, but legally free), which will include booklets and artwork.

  • After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all my music (Cds that I had downloaded into itunes) except the once I had purchased from the itunes store. Can anyone help? Do you know what might have happened?

After the last update of itunes I seem to have lost all the music that I had downloaded from my Cds. It was a lot of music! All I still have is the music that I had purchased in the itunes store. And before you asked. No, I did not have a backup. Never got around to do it.
Does anyone of you have an idea if and how I can maybe get my music back?
Your help is very much appreciated. Would it help if I recover my computer from an earlier date?? I am not even sure if I make sense here.

Hi - I seem to have a similar problem. I was prompted to update to iPhoto 11 yesterday (don't know why yesterday, I'm in iPhoto all the time). So I followed the instructions, library updated, all existing events and albums are there. I uploaded some more pictures and created a few new albums and did some new year spring cleaning, moving stuff around etc. And I started making a calendar.
I've opened it up today, my calendar is still there as are all the new events, but the pictures are empty outlines. If I open up a picture I just get the "!" but I can still see the thumbnails showing in the slider in the bottom - I don't know if that means the source files must still be there somewhere, or if it just means it captured thumbnails yesterday.
I've gone into it via "show package contents" and there just don't seem to be any masters for an upload yesterday. I also just had a look in the last import folder, because of a comment from someone above. As I scrolled down through the folder the images were there and literally disappeared in front of me - by which I mean, the thumbnails were there as I scrolled down and then would turn into empty outlines...!
All my old folders are still there, thankfully (although they're of course the ones that are also all safely back up).
Although I have a timecapsule, my photo library is too big to keep on my hard drive, so I keep it on an external drive - so it only gets backed up when I do it manually (thanks Apple for that, I will never understand why it was designed to work - or not work - that way). So if the pictures have been lost then they are gone for good which is super-frustrating (I just got back from South Korea and was in the middle of sorting out all my shots from that trip).  It seems that this can only have happened because of the update - I should have known better than to have pressed yes.
If you have any ideas, I'd be most grateful!

  • IPhoto Slideshow using iTunes purchased music publish to .Mac

I created a slideshow which used a song which I purchased through the music store. I exported this and uploaded it to .mac. If I view this web page on a another computer beside my mac it wants it to be authorized.
I thought when I purchase music I could use it in iPhoto and iMovie. Why is it forcing me to authorize all computers.
How am I suppose to share this slideshow/movie with my friends and family. I am all for DRM when it comes to protecting music but now I can not use the song except on my mac or computers I authorize (Which is limited to 5). I think this is a bit unfair.

    Hi Squig,
It's a shame isn't it. You need to do a little sneaky work around by first burning the tune to cd (while you are at it, burn a bunch of others that you might want to use in a slideshow. Import the burned cd back into iTunes. Click on date added column so you can see the DRM-less tunes you just imported. Rename those tunes so you know those are the ones without the DRM and then use those tunes in your slideshows.
by the way, you can use them in iMovie if you are then sending those iMovies to burn within iDVD. You will run into the problem if you export the iMovie to quicktime.

  • HT4889 How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

If the Migration Assistant won't do it, move them over as you would any other folder; they're located in the Pictures and Music folders of your home folder by default. The iPhoto library needs to be transferred via a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended or through an AFP network share.

  • IPhone 5 is recognized by iPhoto but not iTunes (OSX 10.6.8, iTunes 10.7, iPhoto 7.1.5)

I am helping a friend with her new iPhone 5.
Issue is that it is recognized by iPhoto but not iTunes.
    iPhone 5 16GB, iOS 6.1.4
    OSX 10.6.8v1.1, iTunes 10.7, iPhoto 7.1.5
Computer: iMac C2D 2.4 GHz (Early 2008)(iMac8,1), 1 GB RAM,
History, recently updated in-place from 10.5.8 Leopard to 10.6.8v1.1 SL, just for the iPhone 5.
Installed iTunes 10.7 (as we do not like interface and loss of separate Playlist view in iTunes 11).
Noted that iPhone 5 stipulates that iTunes 10.7 or higher is required -- So should be OK there.
Initially iPhone was recognized by both iPhoto and iTunes. Then shortly later, iTunes did not see it anymore, was missing from iTunes Devices list.
Called Apple Support, agent walked us through removing iTunes and the iTunes Receipt packages.
Then Reinstalled iTunes 10.7. Ran Permissions Repair. Restarted computer.
Seemed all good, iTunes (10.7) saw and synced and updated the iPhone.
But Now, after two or three weeks, when user plugged in her iphone and ran iTunes, it did not show the iPhone at all, though iPhoto did start up and show pictures.
So the iMac computer sees the iPhone5 well enough to get picture data, but apparently not well enough for iTunes sync.
(she tends to use the wall charger and not plug it into the iMac very much at all).
In all other known respects, both the iPhone5 and the iMac C2D seem to function normally.
    Any thoughts?
I looked at KB article: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/itunes/
And at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1591 (iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X).
And finally am thinking we may need to ALSO do the uninstall via: https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1747 (Remove Apple Mobile Device Service).  But I have not visited with here to do that yet.........)
Any thoughts on best way to proceed?
    Thanks.

What error message ar eyou getting. Why do you say it will not allow you to download?
Verify you meet all the system requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later

When you launch iPhoto with the option key depressed you'll get this window:
All libraries on your hard drive (and on external drives) will be listed and the currently used library will be listed as (default).

  • IPhoto 4.03 & iTunes 6.04, purchased music says, it needs to be authorized.

iPhoto 4.03 & iTunes 6.04, my purchased music keeps saying it needs to be authorized, for my computer. I select a piece of music for an iPhoto slide show and repeatedly go through the authorization process and then no music; no matter how many times, I try. Any Suggestions?

Good point... In trying to save a step or two, I didn't think it completely through. But cannot iTunes' DRM be removed by simply burning a playlist to CD? Your track(s) should then be available from that CD (or for import from it) for your slideshow.

  • Best way to completely share iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes between 2 users?

    Hello everyone
I want to set up my new brandnew iMac (2.66 Intel Core 2) running Leopard the following way: Two accounts (for me and my wife) on the same iMac, no external drive. We want to completely share iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes libraries in a shared folder on the hard disk. That means we need full read, write and edit access to all files and subfolders in this shared folder. We will not use these libraries at the same time.
*What's the best way to do this?*
Thanks in advance for help or for pointing me to where I can find it!
    Morgy
(On our old/current system (Panter), achieving this was quite tricky thing! A posting by Scott Radloff explained step by step how to use Netinfo, then Terminal and finally TinkerTool. I hope it's easier now!)

Sharing the iPhoto library via the Shared Folder cannot be done in 10.5.
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto in both accounts
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions. You could also use a dmg.
In each account in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • I bought a new MacBookPro moved everything from old MacBookPro, new machine runs 10.6.7 - but iPhoto won't 'upgrade' the library - just hangs up supposedly while writing new library. help. thanks.

i bought a new MacBookPro moved everything from old MacBookPro, new machine runs 10.6.7 - but iPhoto won't 'upgrade' the library - just hangs up supposedly while writing new library. help. thanks.

How did you "move everything" over?
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the bad iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • How do i return to the default iPhoto organization?

My daughter tried to separate the events in iPhoto by where they are located. I don't like having it that way, I'd rather just have the events be separated by date (that's how it was originally). Is there any way that i can return it to it's original organization?

    View menu ==> sort events?
Other than that you need to ask your daughter to undo what she did or tell you what you did so someone else can help

  • IPhoto Organization Rolls & Folders

Hello everyone. This is my first post. Thanks for being here and available to answer questions. I did look at several pages of posts to see if I could find an answer to my question. Maybe I looked in the wrong spot. I also tried the search function. I'm sure my question has been already asked, and I apologize in advance for my inability to find it "already asked and answered."
I've had my Mac for about a year. I'm not adept. I have been taking digital pictures, and things work great in iPhoto.
I just began a .Mac "group." I was able, also, to upload photos. The organization "tree" seems to be built around film rolls rather than albums. My film rolls are a sorry mess. I have 159 of them. Many with just 1 photo -- maybe an image I found online that l liked. That sort of thing. A few rolls, do have many photos from my camera. Makes it very difficult to find a photo from inside .Mac when there's 159 rolls). I've managed by relying on the photo's name, and doing it that way. Though that's a bit cumbersome because I cannot scroll through a batch of photos or review them and mull over which ones I'd like to use and not use.
I'd like to see a "tree" like this = iPhoto > Library > Albums
    I see, if I recall correctly = iPhoto > Originals/Modified > Rolls
So, I guess I have to whip my film rolls into some sort of shape. I tried to drag 1 photo into a roll containing a photo or photos with the idea of combining rolls by theme. That attempt did not work. Couldn't drag from roll to roll.
I'm sure a zillion people have run into this. How do you do it? Also, I think I've seen the same tree structure built on rolls when doing other photo things besides .Mac. I can't swear to it due to my unfamiliarity.
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Richard
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Rolls are the most basic element of the iPhoto Library. Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
To move pics between rolls select the pic and drag it to the header of the target roll. This will turn blue when you're hit the target.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

How do I organize a huge (120GB+, but alot of duplicates) music library with iTunes?  Thanks!

If you do not want the duplicate files, maybe the best thing to do first is to eliminate as many duplicates as you can..
You can use iTunes: View/Show Duplicate Items
Or you could use one a script
