IPhoto Performance After Leopard

Has anyone noticed any reduced speed (editing, comparing, etc.) in iPhoto '08 after installing Leopard? I'm interested in getting the new OS, but am always wary of the slow downs that can occur with an upgrade. iPhoto is one of the more intensive app's I use, so I thought that would be a good check. Web review seem to suggest that Leopard is quite efficient, but I thought I'd check for the real user reactions.

I had a contrary experience, which I attribute to running on an older G4 chip. Any graphics-intensive work was noticeably slower in Leopard, particularly iPhoto and Quicktime. System benchmarks bore this out; my machine is 17% faster running Tiger than Leopard.
That said, I think that this is entirely due optimizations made for the Intel chips in Leopard, and that it does seem to be faster for everyone on more recent Macs.

  • Slow Performance after Leopard 10.5.2. Update

After updating to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2, I have encountered performance issues that I suspect are related to my Creative Suite applications.
I find that after a reboot, my system performs pretty well, but over time (a day or two) it starts to slow down dramatically. Using Activity Monitor to look for clues, I noticed what seems an inordinate number of "MSGS SENT" by several applications, e.g.:
Photoshop CS3 is running in the background with a document open, and it's sending about 100 Msgs per second.
Illustrator CS3 is running in te background with no document open, and it's sending about 500 Msgs per second
Unfortunately, I did not observe these numbers prior to updating to 10.5.2. But I have observed, that quitting these applications seems to restore system performance to an acceptable level.

I think it may have something to do with Photoshop's event
handling. That is, it is polling for input even though you
have no file open. I'll maybe take a look at this later if
    I have time.

  • IPhoto trouble after Leopard upgrade

Just upgraded to Leopard and iPhoto would not launch after the upgrade.
Tried to reinstall iPhoto by upgrading to iLife 08 and installation was successful, but when I launch I get a message saying I need to upgrade my photo library and I click OK.
Then I get this message "Photo library is damaged and cannot be upgraded." Then am required to "Quit."
    Help is greatly appreciated.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto lost after leopard installation- new Mac user needs your help!!

First, let me state: BRAND NEW MAC USER- BEWARE!
Just got a new mac for Christmas (refurbished). It came with iPhoto. My first call was to technical support about issues installing Leopard. After we resolved those problems, iPhoto was gone (as well as several other less essential things like checkers, etc). Since I installed Leopard, do I now need to repurchase iLife or iPhoto? iPhoto was the real reason we bought the system- I'm dying to use it but it has vanished. I know so many people have posted questions about similar issues but they all seemed to have existing libraries that aren't working correctly. So forgive me if this is a repeat questions but I'd really appreciate the help. Take pity on a very new and very lost user... Thank you!

You need to re-install iPhoto from the system restore disks that came with your Mac. Choose to install the bundled applications only.

  • IPhoto issues after Leopard install...

I downloaded Leopard not long ago and I am having some problems iPhoto. It seems like my libraries and photos are there, and I can see the thumbnails. But when I go to view the photo I get the big grey box with a ? in it. Is there a setting I am missing or did something go wrong when I upgraded to Leopard? Any advice or direction will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where did you download Leopard from? And what version was it?
How did you install it, Archive and Install or Erase and Install?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Getting iPhoto back after Leopard installation.

    Hi
I installed Leopard a while ago and promptly lost iPhoto. I was told to reinstall ilife from the original tiger disks open it in finder and double-click on "install bundled software only".
I did this but it won't let me install bundled software only as the install or 'continue' button is greyed out.
Can anyone shed light on why this is happening and how I can get around it to install iPhoto?
    Many thanks

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • Iphoto trouble with Leopard and RAW pictures

After installation of Leopard, iphoto 08 is unable to open RAW photographies in editing mode.
    Can you help me ?

    Régis:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. How did you perform the Leopard upgrade? Did you do an Archive and Install without selecting the option to retain the user and internet settings? And are you using Photoshop for the RAW editing? Check in your HD/Library folder for a folder titled ScriptingAdditions. It gets removed when when you do a A&I without those options being selected. Can you open Photoshop and use it outside of iPhoto? If so then forget what I just wrote as it is not a possible reason.
    Do you Twango?

  • Performance of Leopard on an 867 G4

I have two Macs, both G4s. One is a dual processor 867 and the other is a single processor also 867. I was curious to see if somebody had Leopard installed on an old G4 like this and what the performance was like. I use the single processor G4 for recording my band, and it does okay with 10.3.9, but I don't want to hinder it's ability to do that by overdoing the OS.
Thanks in advance for your help!!

    Hi james;
I just had to upgrade a PowerMac G4 MDD to Leopard so that I could install a newer version of iTunes and iPhoto. I have to state that I was pleasantly surprised with the performance after the Upgrade.
My two suggestions would be make sure you have enough RAM. The PM G4 MDD had 1.25 GB and worked nicely.
Second backup. I didn't need the backup but I have started doing a backup whenever I do anything major. I use SuperDuper to create a bootable clone and I test to be sure it is bootable before proceeding.

  • Another "horrible performance after upgrading to Lion" post

    Hi,
Sorry for yet another "my computer has horrible performance after upgrading to Lion" post.  I did search the forum before posting.
I have a relatively new Macbook Pro, 8 GB RAM, 2.8 MHz Intel i7 CPU.  I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion, then Lion to 10.7.2.
The first time I upgraded, I no longer had my user account, so restored from Time Machine back to SL.  After a month or so, I hoped Apple had fixed the bug, so I redownloaded and reinstalled, and this time the upgrade succeeded.
Ever since the upgrade, my MBP runs like a dog.  I get the spinning beach ball constantly, across all range of applications, both Apple and 3rd party.  Occasionally it doesn't wake up from sleep (close, open lid) and I have to kick it in the head by holding down the power button.
I've tried booting into the recovery partition, running disk utility, and repairing disk and permissions.  I've read elsewhere (Google hit) that doing a completely clean install fixes the performance issues (for those users anyway).
I know this is a fairly generic post, but any advice on how to maximize machine performance under Lion, or should I revert to Snow Leopard?  Do I really have to wipe the disk, install fresh, restore all non-OS files (don't accidentally wipe a required OS file), then reapply the 10.7.2 maintenance?  Yuck.
    Thanks,
    Scott

try an SMC reset if you are not seeing any weird spikes in Activity Monitor and you've deduced that none of your third party drivers or apps are interfearing with the way lion works.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • What is current version iPhoto for Snow Leopard?

What is the current version of iPhoto for Snow Leopard?  I have used iPhoto ever since 10.6.8 was installed --use Software Update all the time, my current iPhoto says it's v. 8.3.1.  Now, suddenly, when I try to open iPhoto, messages says : " The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto. Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process may take several minutes depending on the number of photos in the library.  (choices are)  Quit - - Upgrade"
I am fearful to click the upgrade because I have assumed iPhoto was up-to-date for this OS 10.6.8.  Fearful, because I envision losing the whole iPhoto library.   I was in our local reseller/retailer yesterday and was encouraged  to "just go ahead and click it!"  but tho' I'm not a nerd, I need to understand what's going on here !  WIll appreciate any thoughtful counsel . . .

9.2.3, which is part of iLife '11.

Add new photo to existing calendar folder in iPhoto
I am making a calendar in iPhoto, picking photos from a folder, let's call it "2011 Pics," in iPhoto. After arranging all the photos and captions I decided I wanted to insert a new photo -- one that was not in "2011 Pics." So I inserted it into the folder, but the picture does not show up on the scrolling menu of pictures at the left of the calendar-making page. This happened last year and in frustration I started all over again. But surely there is a way to add a new picture to a calendar that is already laid out.

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • After Leopard Upgrade, HDTV No Longer Displays Full Screen Apple TV??

Fairly recent Apple convert. iMac is directly connected to HDTV (Mini-DVI to HDMI) and A/V Receiver(Toslink). After Leopard upgrade, I now have a black border, on HDTV, no matter what resolution I choose (worked automatically and perfectly on Tiger). In System Preferences-Display, I am mirroring the displays and have Overscan turned off, because without it, the Menu Bar does not display at all. I am wondering if Apple is trying to force me to buy an Apple TV or if maybe I just need to be patient until the correct drivers come out? Apple told me they were referring my problem to the Engineering Department, but I am not holding my breath. Primary need is to view Photos and eventually rent movies, when HD is readily available. Any opinions, predictions or suggestions on resolving would be appreciated. Thanks!!

same issue here. Don't use it very often so could not remember if it was fine previously thought it was. Hope we get help soon.

  • Asset query execution performance after upgrade from 4.6C to ECC 6.0+EHP4

    Hi,guys
I am encounted a weird problems about asset query execution performance after upgrade to ECC 6.0.
Our client had migrated sap system from 4.6c to ECC 6.0. We test all transaction code and related stand report and query.
Everything is working normally except this asset depreciation query report. It is created based on ANLP, ANLZ, ANLA, ANLB, ANLC table; there is also some ABAP code for additional field.
This report execution costed about 6 minutes in 4.6C system; however it will take 25 minutes in ECC 6.0 with same selection parameter.
At first, I am trying to find some difference in table index ,structure between 4.6c and ECC 6.0,but there is no difference about it.
i am wondering why the other query reports is running normally but only this report running with too long time execution dump messages even though we do not make any changes for it.
    your reply is very appreciated
    Regards
    Brian

    Thanks for your replies.
I check these notes, unfortunately it is different our situation.
Our situation is all standard asset report and query (sq01) is running normally except this query report.
I executed se30 for this query (SQ01) at both 4.6C and ECC 6.0.
I find there is some difference in select sequence logic even though same query without any changes.
I list there for your reference.

But it changed to first select ANLA,and open cursor ANLP,then select  ANLC,ANLB,ANLZ,at last fetch ANLP.
Probably,it is the real reason why it is running long time in ECC 6.0.
Is there any changes for query selcection logic(table join function) in ECC 6.0.
