IPhoto photo directories are gone

I just installed the iPhoto 9 software. When I go to browse the library through the Finder, all I see is a file called "iPhoto Library." When selected, instead of seeing all the various sub-directories of photos I used to see, I see nothing. And the iPhoto Library icon blinks periodically. What's up with that?

Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to see inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning:
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To work with anther editor:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

  • ALL pictures in iPhoto *and* PhotoBooth are gone :(  please help

    Hello,
I have a bit of a dilema here. On 6-27-07 (actually 6-28 cause it was after midnight), my daughter and I were taking pictures in photobooth. I selected the iPhoto icon from the PhotoBooth picture to send a copy of those pictures to iPhoto.
PhotoBooth froze up after doing several of them and wouldn't work. I am trying to remember from memory (which is swiss cheese from the MS), but I think I had to do a hard shut down. When I tried to go to iPhoto, it acted like it was my 1st time using it and it began asking me questions as if I was setting it up for the 1st time. ALL pictures are GONE. Everything in iPhoto and PhotoBooth are GONE I don't know what I did or how (if I can) to fix it.
Can anyone possibly help me? Lots of precious memories gone. I was recently going to read how to do a back-up right before this happened. Now I wish I hadn't gone to sleep that night until I learned how to do it and actually did make a back-up
My husband called Apple and they told him to do something and now that has created approximately 3 copies of random pics and not all of them, or I would just delete the extras. My husband may have done something wrong to have it make extra copies of the pictures it has now, I don't know.
My husband didn't seem like he was happy with the help that he was getting at the time. So, I found my way here again!!! I have been to the discussions boards once before, but I forgot how to get here (serious swiss cheese memory from MS). I have to save ALL websites that I like to my favorites or I should say 'Bookmarks' or I will probably never find it again. <embarassed>
**I will tell you a little about me and the use of my mac....... I have Multiple Sclerosis so my husband purchased the lap top to make it easier for me to get online and not be stuck to one chair which makes me hurt bad. I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
Anyway, when we purchased it we explained that I would mainly be using it for Internet use and for the pictures that I take (I am disabled, so that is about all I can do but I thoroughly enjoy it), which happens to be more than the average person since I have a new Grandson
Any help that anyone can give me, I would TRULY APPRECIATE!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    New2Him

    Brenda,
    You're quite welcome.
That does sound like your original library. It makes sense to me; your husband was probably told to drag it to the Desktop by the Apple help desk person. Look inside your Pictures folder for the other two iPhoto Library folders. If you don't find them there, do another Finder Search. Click once on a found item in the Search window to see its path at the bottom of that window. That should help you locate those folders.
After you find and rename or delete the other libraries, you will be ready to create a new library. (You might not want to delete those other folders yet - in case some photos are missing from your main library. But if you are sure that nothing in them is original, go ahead and Trash them to free up the space.)
To create a new library, Option-launch iPhoto and click "Create Library." By default it will be located in your Pictures folder and named "iPhoto Library." You can change the name if you want - say, "iPhoto Library New" before you click "Save." A new, empty library will open. Drag the right corner of the window up so that it fills only about half of your screen. Do iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and make sure that there IS a check in the boxes beside "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library" and "Add ColorSync Profile".
On the other half of your screen, open a Finder window. Set it to column view and navigate this path: Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Originals/ 2007/ (Film Roll folders). It is these Film Roll folders that contain your photos. Select all of the Roll folders and drag them as a group over the iPhoto window until the cursor shows you a green plus symbol. Drop them in the main viewing area of the iPhoto window. iPhoto will indicate to you that it is importing. A film roll will be created for each folder that you dragged. [Tip: if you want an Album to represent each film roll, then drag them to the Source Pane (left column) instead of the main viewing window. This will create an Album and a film roll, both with the same name as the imported folder.]
I have read that the film roll date can be wrong after importing, so you may want to check the dates as you go. Open the Info Pane in the lower left corner of the iPhoto window (click the little i). When you select a Roll, its info will display in the Info Pane. You can edit the Roll's title and date, if you wish.
When the 2007 rolls have all been imported, switch to the Originals/ 2006 folder, select the roll folders, and drag to your iPhoto window. Repeat for each year in your Desktop library.
This will recover your Original, unedited photos in the same film rolls as before. What cannot be saved is your Albums, Slideshows, Books, titles, keywords, ratings, and other metadata. These were contained in the database file that was damaged during the iPhoto hang or subsequent hard shut down.
If you had spent significant time editing your photos, then you may want to have a look in Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Modified to see if you wish to save any of the edited versions. There is no way to reconnect the edits with their Originals; that info was also stored in the database file. But if you want to import them to your library you may. Be aware that this will cause the appearance of duplication, much like you had in the library your husband created. If you can part with your edited versions, then it is much easier to discard them. (If not, be selective.)
I'll look forward to hearing your progress. Regards,
    Shelly

Over half of my photos on my photo stream are gone? I never deleted them. Is there a way to recover them?

    iCloud: My Photo Stream FAQ
How long are My Photo Stream photos stored in iCloud?
The photos you upload to My Photo Stream are stored in iCloud for 30 days to give your devices plenty of time to connect and download them.
It's always been like this as far as I know.

  • I updated my iPhone 4S and now all of my photos in the photo stream are gone

I updated my iPhone 4S  with the latest software update OOS 7.0.6 and now all of my 1000 photos in the photo stream are gone.  How can I retrieve them?

Only 1000 photos can be in Photo Stream and they will only stay there for 30 days.
After 1000 photos, the earliest get dumped.

They should still be in your Camera Roll.
You should sync photos to your computer using by connecting the iPhone or using iCloud.

  • I downloaded my photos into iPhoto, now they are gone.  Where did they go?, I downloaded my photos into iPhoto, now they are gone.  Where did they go?

I dowloaded pictures from my camera card onto my computer like I've done dozens of time before.
    IPhoto immediately opens.
    I imported them.
I put them into an album.
    I even began editing them.
    While I was editing.....
i got the dreaded circle of color.
Error message that iphoto stopped working, I clicked report.
And, now my photos in that last download are gone.
They aren't in my last download folder.
They aren't on my card.  I of course, presssed delete when it asked if I wanted to save them.
    They aren't in my trash.
I still see the album I created.  It just is now empty
    Please, please help.
I'm working on a MacBook Pro.
    Purchased in October 2012
    Os X Version 10.8.5
Currently in the hallway at my daughter basketball tournament trying not to cry.  I know that there are bigger problems in the world than me losing 500 pictures.  But, I'd really like them back.
    Please.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Previously uploaded photos now are gone and show up as blank events. Where did they go?

I uploaded pictures onto iPhoto from my Europe trip about a month ago, and spent a lot of time editing them and separating them into different photo albums. When I opened iphoto tonight, all of the photos are gone - the names of the events still exist and the albums still exist, but they are totally empty. When I plugged in my memory card, iPhoto says the pictures are already imported, but they are nowhere to be found! I will be so disappointed if all of the edited photos are gone. Any help is greatly appreciated!

What has changed since it worked?

  • Need to find photos they are gone!

I was going thru some of my library today and I noticed that some pictures are gone...specifically from 2003, and from 2 events (a christmas and a birthday )
I have been using Backup to back them up onto a disk.
I also have used SuperDuper in the past.
When I look at the file on the disks, they are zip files...
when I try to unarchive them...I am not sure....are they going to replace my current library!!!!????
when I look at files from Superduper, I don't see jpgs. I see like data files.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My dog of 13 years just died and I am trying to unearth all photos of him for a DVD project.
    thanks again ,
    Laura

  • IPhoto '08 pictures are gone

Last night as I downloaded some pictures from an SD card, iPhoto appears to have crashed. Only the photos from the last download are there. Albums, events, keywords, photos are all gone. When I go to 'all images' in the Finder it seems that my pictures are there but they are missing from the iPhoto library along with all of my organization. I have backed up via Time Machine regularly but have never tried to bring anything back using it. This is the first time I've had this happen. Can someone help me restore my iPhoto library?
    Thank you
    --pat

Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Photos in Mail / iPhoto Photo Browser are out of date.

In Mail, a photo browser button allows me to browse the contents of my iPhoto library (Events, places, etc).
However, the contents are not the same as what I see in iPhoto.  They appear to be out of date - no event or photo after Jan 2011 is present.
iPhoto itself is working just fine, and has plenty of more recent photos and events etc.
    Any ideas what's going on?
    Mail version 4.6, iPhoto 9.2.3

    Where is your Library stored?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a File called 'AlbumData.xml'.
Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?

  • Restore to previous icloud settings and photos/video are gone. Still recognized 6 gigs of data but can't find them. please help me rescue my children's precious moments.  Thanks in advance

Alright people i have a problem and looking for help. Yesterday the iphone started acting funny, a couple apps started crashing and the Iphone reboot a few times on it's own. Things seemed to be back to normal and I notice a "system update" that needed to be install. I thought this update may help the earlier crashing issue. During install, the Iphone froze up and I had to wipe it to factory settings.
Now I have not backed up the phone on the computer/itunes, because I bought extra storage in ICloud. I reset my phone to the last Icloud setting and rescued my contacts, but not the apps or PHOTO/VIDEOS. I was expecting to have the phone to return back to my previous working phone, but now I have to reinstall the apps. Reinstalling the apps is no big deal, but now I only have 6 pictures and NO videos. The icloud settings tells me I have multiple gigs of data used, but where are the photos and videos?
I should add that I lost all my previous text history, which I wish to get back too if possible...
To save some conversation, I researched and didn't find much answers, but found most people were double backing up the photos with Dropbox, Google+, and/or Flickr. I have set up accounts at all three to prevent further issues, but this won't replace the last 6 months of photos that I can not seem to find or reinstate back onto Iphone.
Android uses an external memory card to prevent this type of data loss. #apple#iphone #icloud
I should add the wife and I have two accounts: I have an Iphone 5s and she has her own account with an Iphone 5s and Ipad.  We also have a computer running windows vista.
Thanks in advance for any help...

Did you ever restore your last iCloud backup?  That contains you camera roll photos & videos, text messages, app data, settings, etc.  It will also redownload your apps and other purchased media.
If you didn't, follow the steps in this article to restore the backup: https://support.apple.com/kb/ph12521.

  • 5th Gen. Video & Photo feautres are gone

I just discovered that my 5th gen iPod has been demoted. The photo and video features have somehow been disabled - they don't know up in iTunes preferences, nor can I drag a movie onto the iPod. When I run the iPod software updater, the icon has changed to suggest that my 5th gen iPod is a much older model (non-clickwheel model).
I've reinstalled iTunes, rebooted. Reinstalled the 10.4.5 update. Nothing.
PowerMac G5 1.8 SP   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1.25GB RAM, 80/200 GB SATA Drives, 20" Cinema Display, lots of USB stuff...

    SOLUTION FOUND:
I used Pacifist to install the iPodDriver.kext file from the iTunes installer and rebooted. Why the installer couldn't tell that the .kext file was missing is beyond me.
The file was deleted when, in a previous iPod problem, I was advised to delete the .kext (and it did solve that problem).
