IPhoto Photos folder disappeared from sidebar

I've loved being able to upload photos from iPhoto using a Photos folder that was in my finder window sidebar. The photo sync hadn't updated for over a day, so I went into the iCloud settings, unselected Photos, then selected it again, as directed in a post I found somewhere. This actually worked and photo sync updated, but now the Photos folder is completely missing from my sidebar!!!
I have conducted several searches, and found the iPhoto Library, but photos are buried in multiple layers of folder hierarchies. It's just not as user friendly as the folder previously available, where it essentially just showed the photo stream.
Can anyone help me regain the simplicity I previously enjoyed?

The "Photos" folder (or the Media Browser) will show only show in the File Chooser window, when you are prompted to select an image file - as Terence Devlin said.
You will see it in the sidebar, in the "Media" section, when you select a file, but no longer in the Finder. That has been discontinued since MacOS X Lion.
If iPhoto does not show in photos, repair the iPhoto library.

All of my photos have disappeared from PSE Organizer 13 (after I upgraded it).  The files are all on the HD.  When I try and reimport them, Organizer says they are already in there and will not allow me to proceed.  When I highlight a keyword, Get the message  "NO MEDIA TO BE DISPLAYED".  Perhaps I am dense, but I find the Search function of the Forum to be near useless, unless I just happen to type the Exact name of a topic.
I now have no access to perhaps 35,000 files from 12 years of using PSE!

Which operating system are you running on?   Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Which version did you upgrade from?  updated from PSE 13 to PSE 13.1
In the organizer, which view are you using - in the View menu is Details checked or unchecked - does it make any difference?  was unchecked now checked.  Now can see the other files, but the Keyword tags that I had attached in the past does not bring up the selected frames.
In the View menu, select Media types - are all checked?  At this point I have only Ohotos and videos checked
In View menu, select Hidden Files - is Show All Files checked?  yes
I'm assuming that you are in Media view, what happens if you select People Places or Events?  get groupings of files with those keywords.

Thanks Brian, at least some of my problems are gone, just can't get the keyword sorting to work correctly

  • All my photos have disappeared from iphoto!!! I can find them in spotlight

    Hello All! Help!
I was importing photos from a compact flash card into iphoto which was successful. I powered down for the night, the next time I opened up iphoto my entire library seemed to have disappeared(about 5000 images!) All that was left was the new import. It was as though the prog had reset itself there were no albums etc left at all. I understand that my photos live in the iphoto library folder in my pics but that about it! I have never understood the bizarre set up for these sub folders and how they work. Nor do I understand the other elements of the iphoto folder i.e. iphotodb etc. I noticed that I had two library folders as well and when I spotlighted jpg's that I have at least doubled up on images. Its a mess! Can anyone tell me exactly the way it should all be set up, in laymen's terms? Where the folders should live and in what order? And how to get rid of all the duplicate jpgs that have somehow been created? Without having to go through 5000 images by hand!!!

    Thanks for your response Terence.
That is what I've done already. iPhoto could not open. After the hard drive and logic board were replaced (for other issues) and OS X Leopard reinstalled, I rebuilt the library manually, and now the same thing has happened again, iPhoto crashes on start up. iPhoto Manager did not fix it, iPhoto cannot rebuild its own library for some reason, and I don't want to have to repeatedly rebuild the library by hand having already done it once. I've noted other posts about keeping constant library backups, which I can start doing, but I was wondering if perhaps going to a newer version of iPhoto would resolve this issue. There are so many similar posts on here perhaps iLife 5.0.4 is really not compatible with Leopard. I would prefer to get this version of iLife to work instead of trying to upgrade.

  • Photos Folder Disappeared Along with iPhoto

Tonight I plugged my iPhone to sync and discovered not only was my iPhoto library wiped out but the main Photos folder I had created awhile back is completely missing.
I've searched the internet and discussion topics and have yet to find a solution for when you can't find the originals from the Home folder.
I don't know if it has anything to do with it but it appears I went from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto 8...though I don't know how that's even possible without me knowing.
I know this is probably completely strange but that's why I'm so baffled. I REALLY need to get this folder back and could use ANY suggestions...

HI and welcome to Apple Discussions...
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then on the right open the Pictures folder. See if you can access your iPhoto library there.
If you can't find it that way, choose a photo, right or control click an image then choose "Show in Finder".
FYI. iPhoto 08 system requirements are: A Mac computer with an Intel processor, a Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0 GHz or faster), or an iMac G5 (1.9 GHz or faster)
So you can't be running iPhoto 08 on a PowerBookG4 PowerPC.
As soon as you can access your iPhoto library, backup all the images to an external source.

  • Photos have disappeared from iphoto library

Hi, I am using iPhoto version 6.0.6 and I can't get some of the old photos to show up in the library.
I had a lot of pictures, had to switch computers, and during the transfer, the old photos no longer show up in the library. I was using an older version of OS X before, now I'm using 10.5.6 on this computer.
When I am in iPhoto, and go to file - import to library - user - pictures - iPhoto Library active - originals - (year) - (roll #) - (file #).JPG and hit "import", a window pops up that says "unreadable files: 1 The following file could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library folder)
So it won't let me import, it sounds like because it is already in the library, which it should be, but it doesn't show up in the library. Newer photos that I have downloaded from the camera show up in the library like normal and they stay there. They are in the same location (user - pictures - iPhoto Library active - originals - (year) - (roll #) - (file #).JPG) as the photos that don't show up.
Any ideas how I can get these photos to show up in the library? I am considering a switch to iLife 9, by the way.

    Russell
By all means upgrade to iPhoto 09, but don't before you fix this problem. All you'll do is roll it along.
That message is exactly what it says. The file is in the iPhoto Library Folder and iPhoto will not import files that are in the active Library folder - a sensible precaution against duplicates.
The reason iPhoto is not showing you files in there is because the Library has been corrupted somehow.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • My photos have disappeared from iPhoto 11

My hard drive was replaced at the beginning of this year by apple because of the possibility of premature failure. Just before Christmas 2013, i discovered my iPhoto was blank. sometime in January, the photos all reappeared but as of yesterday, they have once again disappeared from iPhoto. The pictures are still on the harddrive as they can be seen using Finder but are no longer grouped by albums. Also, they are locked in Finder. The iMac is running OSX 10.7.5 and the iPhoto version is 9.4.3.
I would like my photos back in iPhoto and would like them to be reliably there when i go to view them. Any suggestions? Apple Support advised me they had never heard of this happening.

If so, try your Admin and other Account(s).

  • Some of my photos have disappeared from iphoto

    Hi
I'm running iphoto 09 (version 8.1.2 424) on my Mac Book (Mac OS X 10.5.6).
I've just noticed that several photos are missing from various events. In some cases there is only one photo left. This appears to have happened randomly - some of the events are unaffected, others have just a few missing, others most.
Are there any suggestions as to what might have happened and how I could retrieve the photos? There are no thumbnails or anything. They just appear to have vanished!
    Many thanks.

OK so I've been digging around in this forum and seen a post which says that dragging photos from iphoto to the Trash Can in the Finder sidebar rather than iphoto's trash can, can corrupt the iphoto Library.
I've always deleted photos from iphoto by doing this - I didn't realise this was something I shouldn't be doing. Could this be the cause? And if so can I do anything to remedy it?
I regular back up everything to an external hard drive but I have never had cause to restore anything from it. Would I be able to do this without losing what I already have, and is there an optimum way to restore photos I don't currently have on the imac which might still be backed up on the external hard drive?
    Thank you.

  • My iphoto icon has disappeared from my dock and applications folder. Please HELP

I tried clicking on the iphoto icon in the dock and nothing happened. I went looking for it in the applications folder and it wasn't there. I then moved the icon from the dock on to the desktop and it poof'd into thin air! GONE. What can I do? Please help! VERY upset.

reinstall iPhoto from the restore disks that came with your computer -
reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

  • Photo album disappears from iphoto

My two most recent albums keep disappearing from iPhoto, and thus from my iPad and iPhone.  I've repaired permissions and the iPhoto database, but no joy.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • My iPhoto photo library disappeared after I used a SanDisk Cruzer Fit USB Flash Drive

Hi! Not sure if these 2 things are connected, but I bought a SanDisk Cruzer 32GB USB Flash Drive. I dragged my documents over and copied them on to the flash drive. I didn't have iPhoto open. I didn't drag any applications, photo library folders, or anything else over to the flash drive. I just dragged over 3 file folders of work and personal documents (MSWord, Excel, etc.) over to the flash drive. It took some time to copy all my documents over, so I left it overnight.
The next day, I decided it might be a good idea to also back up my photos from iPhoto. Interestingly enough, nearly all my photos had been deleted--save for photos from the last 3 - 4 weeks or so. That's right, a decade worth of photos were gone. I went online, Googled the problem, looked through this community and verified that I did not accidentally import one library into another or move (or delete) the backup iPhoto Library folder or anything. I even checked the flash drive. Nothing. Just the 3 folders worth of documents that I'd copied over.
Has anyone heard of a flash drive somehow corrupting or deleting photos from an iPhoto library?
I'm stumped. I have dug through other regular folders where I'd stashed some .jpgs so I could burn a CD for family, so I have put back about 338 photos from a library of thousands of images (some which are, of course, irreplaceable). The irony is that this last year, I'd been scanning in photos from actual physical photo albums to digitize them and have them handy on iPhoto... not knowing that they would disappear. And, of course, the double-irony is that I was using a thumb drive to back up my photos when they disappeared. If I wasn't so bummed, I'd be laughing right now.

Thanks for the helpful thoughts LarryHN. I'm having a Mac guy look at my MacBook Pro in the next day or so to see what he can find out. I described the issue on the phone... and like you, he said that saving my documents to a thumb drive shouldn't affect my iPhoto library.
One reason I bought the thumb drive was to back up my iPhoto library, but the time I got to that, it was already gone. I've thought of getting Time Machine (and have checked out other systems), but the reviews are so mixed, I'm dragging my feet on coughing up the cash right now.
When I launch iPhoto, I only see the last few weeks' worth of photos. Oddly, photos I imported 3 weeks ago appear, but are in a folder dated November 2012--when I know I took those and imported them in January 2013. So that's weird...
When I got to iPhoto Library, I have an Auto Import folder with nothing in it. "My Pictures" folder has nothing as well. I did hold down the option key while opening up iPhoto, but only my recent library (a few weeks' worth of photos) appears. I'm using iPhoto 2011 (6.2.3). I can only hope my Mac guy can help...

  • More and more photos progressively disappearing from the Book

    Hi,
Please help me! I've invested a ton of time into this book and am hoping that someone can have a fix instead of me doing the book over. I've bought Apeture for the next time I do one, but please, please tell me there is something that can be done to fix this!
I uploaded about 700 photos to my library. Some of the photos came from the same camera and thus had the same names. I assumed this would be okay as I figured that iPhoto would append something to the name/not use the file name as the key/or however this thing works. I've also posted this as a bug and have tried all the things the genius bar people told me to do/had them do some of the things for me, though this didn't help.
Basically, after importing the photos, I put them in an album, sorted them, and deleted some of them, then I made a Book with about 170 photos in it, about 60 pages long, with several intro pages in there. During this process, I weeded out more photos from the book - I started out with more pictures then 170 and I got down to 170 by looking to see which look nicer in the layout and deleting the ones that were not as nice, just from the book, not from the album. I've also emptied my trash since then, both in iPhoto and in the trash on the macbookpro, to make room for the back up library later, to try to fix the problem as below.
    Symptoms:
    1. Thumbnail images in Book above page display when in page mode not updating the text on intro pages for days on end, despite a restart of the app, computer, rebuilding library, etc.
    2. Pictures are progressively disappearing from my Book
Pages not updating - Thumbnail shows a page filled with pictures when in page mode, but when you are looking at the page itself, below the thumbnails, the picture is missing
    3. The pictures in the thumbnails and the pictures on the pages when in page mode went missing - in both places
    4. When you try to drag a picture that has disappeared into the book from the album, it "bounces back" - thinks that it's already in there. When you make a duplicate, you can drag the duplicate in (and this has been my pathetic workaround, which I am hoping not to do if you have something better!) And in any case, this is a bug and you should be able to replicate it by uploading pics with the same name, then moving some into the trash with the same name but a different photo then those in the book.
Anyway, I think that what's happening is that the Book is "confused" and thinks that the pictures deleted have been moved to the trash, when they really have not, they just have the same name. Somehow, the book is possibly ignoring the _copy that it's supposed to have in the name. Good grief! Help!

    Ben:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Thumbnail shows a page filled with pictures when in page mode, but when you are looking at the page itself, below the thumbnails, the picture is missing
What do you see if you try to view one of those "missing" image in the main library in the edit mode? Do you see a blank window with an exclamation mark in the middle?
If that's the case, that means that iPhoto has lost the link to the original file. Since you've rebuild the library and that didn't bring them back, I'm afraid your only option is to start over with a new library and import the original files from the old one as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar crash all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
Hint: I create a separate library for each book that I create using iPhoto Library Manager. Then, like you, I put all of the photos I think I want into an album in my primary library and copy it to the book library with iPLM. I can add more at a later date the same way if necessary.
When the book is complete, ordered and delivered I burn that book library folder intact to a CD in the Finder. This gives me an archived copy of the library that I can use at a later date to order another exact copy of the book regardless of what I do to my primary library.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto library completely disappeared from Lacie drive

    Hi
I would be so grateful if anyone could help me.
My mac was backed up to an external hard drive (Lacie) then wiped. Within the back-up was iPhoto containing pictures from 2008 to 2013. They are my only copy and none have ever been printed out.
My daughter was making a movie for prom so I connected up the drive to get her some photos and videos. Indeed it was always my plan, that when she leaves for uni I would spend a year making albums of all of the pictures that no one has ever seen.
I went into time machine back up, latest and older copies, and there is no reference to iPhoto whatsoever. Many of the answers on line refer to empty iPhoto libraries. Mine is just not there, no reference to it at all. The back up is showing about 180 gb so the iPhoto library is not within this back up anymore as the library is much bigger.
I cannot understand what has happened.
I have googled every possible way of asking the question but i cannot find anyone whose iPhoto library has disappeared without reference to it.
    Please help me
    Thank you

What system and iPhoto versions are you using?  Do you keep your MBP on all the time and iPhoto open? I
Do you have Time Machine enabled even when the EHD is not mounted?  If so you may have "local" backups on your MBP that might have the library.  See this site for more info: What are Local Snapshots?

Yes, that's the first thing i did !! I checked all my 8 home screens but no use. I am also surprised as Why it disappeared !! What I am aware of is that only apps that are bought from app store can be deleted, not original iphone apps!!

  • Downloads folder disappeared from the desktop?

    Hello!
Mavericks user here. Today I was trying to find the downloads folder, you know the folder where all newly downloaded files end up on the right lower border of the screen, and are beautifully filed with the newest download at the bottom.
So for some reason I moved the folder to finder, and it disappeared from the desktop. It is not in finder either. When I searched for it on finder I found the folder again, putted it back on the desktop, but now the downloads are ordered alpahabetically when I download a new file, it looks different.
How do I restore the folder on the desktop in such a way the the newest files come at the bottom?
    Thanks a lot in advance!
