IPhoto/Photoshop problem

I recently had to do an archive and install to get away from the dreaded 10.4.11 update and I now have a problem and I don't know whether it's with iPhoto, Photoshop or the OS. I have my iPhoto set to open in Photoshop CS and prior to the update it all worked fine. Now when I double-click on a photo it starts up Photoshop but doesn't load the file! I've tinkered with preferences in PS and iPhoto but to no avail. Anybody any ideas?

You need to re-install Photoshop.
When you did the A+I install, a part of Photoshop that's in the old System Folder got left behind. This is the bit that deals with the Applescripts that pass the pics to and from from iPhoto to Photoshop.

  • Import photos iPhoto - Photoshop Elements

    Hello,
I'm using Photoshop Elements 12 trial version. I would buy it but i got one problem with the automatic import function in Photoshop Elements.
On the first start of Photoshop Elements, it asked me if I want to import all my photos from iPhoto. So I did import all photos.
In iPhoto my photos have been organizes like this:
    > April (folder)
    > Mai (folder)
         - Wohnung (event)
         - Exkursion Werder (event)
    > Juni (folder)
    > Juli (folder)
          - Exkursion Schweiz (event)
But now in Photoshop I got this:
    > 20110908-192729 (folder)
    > 20110908-192733 (folder)
    > ... (and so on)
Is this really the way Photoshop Elements imports all my photos? Do I really have to organize all my thousands of photos again?

I wanted to use Photoshop Elements Organizer and Editor only and not continue to use iPhoto because it’s very slow.
Do you think it would be easier if I just continue to use iPhoto as the Organizer and use Photoshop Elements Editor as the editor?
Seems there is no way to import iPhoto albums and events to Photoshop Elements Organizer.

First of all, are you certain you want to ditch iphoto permanently? It's not necessary to do that unless you wish. So are you sure that you no longer want iphoto at all?

Hard Drive warning when upgrading to Mountain Lion. 2nd try and I was able to upgrade. Software update for IPhoto, had problems restarting. Do I need my hard drive checked

    Yes.
Choose Apple menu > Restart. Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.
When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

  • Iphoto slow problem - photos are organised in folders not film rolls

I'm suffering from the iphoto slow problem and have been trying to find a way to stop iphoto from loading all the photos every time.
My photos are arranged in folders, so I don't seem to have the option to stop the photos being loaded by film roll.
Does anyone have any other ideas ?

I'm not sure what that means. Whether you have albums or not, iPhoto still considers a single import batch as a roll. If the rolls are not collapsed, then everytime you launch iPhoto, it assumes you want to be able to see your entire library, and it goes about the job of making all the thumbnails available.

  • Iphoto launch problem with photoshop CS4

Sorry if Im in the wrong section, If so can some one point me in the right direction. I would be very grateful if I could seek assistance on the following problem. I have downloaded Photoshop CS4 and when I opened it my Iphoto folder would not open, an error message "iphoto is being used by another application or is unreadable. This still appears after I have closed down Photoshop, After restoring from time machine and deistalling Photoshop the Iphoto comes back but the sane happens when I launch CS4 again. Can anyone advise me.
    Regards Keith

    Keith
    To use Photoshop with iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If this error message stops you opening iPhoto:
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to repair library permissions.

  • IPhoto 6 Problem when editing using Photoshop Elements 3.0

Please can someone help. If I edit a photo in photoshop elements 3.0 from iPhoto and then click the save button I get an option box that requires the quality and save settings. I've selected the best quality but I then have a choice of saving in base standard, base optimised or progressive. If I choose any of these options, when I go back into iPhoto the skin tones etc. have changed (they have a more reddish look about them)on that picture. Please can someone advise me how to save without it altering the colour of my photos. Editing in iPhoto doesn't effect the colour at all.

    Helloson:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It's not that setting (I use Base Standard) but the fact that PE3 may be adding a color profile to the file that is different to what was there originally. Go to the Photoshop Elements menu and select Color Settings... option. There you can set it to have "No color management". (I'm running PE2 so the menu selections may be different than PE3). Then see if that will make a difference.

  • IPhoto & Photoshop Elements 4

    Hi all
I escaped from the Windows world a few weeks ago, but finding the combination of iPhoto '08 and Photoshop Elements 4 (PSE) not very intuitive and intially appears to be clumsy when opening files - not a very efficient workflow wise when compared to the same software in a Windows XP environment
Completely confused on opening photographic files and where they are being stored as one editor can see files whilst the other cannot ie: the greyed out library icon.
It is even more confusing when bringing Adobe Bridge into play.
I realise I am at the bottom end of the Mac learning curve and therefore ask on whether there any manuals or techincal literature explaining what is going on?
    -Keith-

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto & Photoshop Saves

    Do I have this right?
I use iPhoto to organize my photos, and use it to launch Photoshop to edit a picture. As a photographer, I don't edit your originals. You save the edited version elsewhere. But I am unable to save it back to iPhoto in the original folder or a new one. The only way to get an edited photo back into iPhoto without overwriting the original is to save it elsewhere, then import it back into iPhoto.
Is this right? This doesn't seem a very "Apple" way to go about this, especially with such an obviously popular editing program. No one thought of this integration issue when dealing with an outside application?
I have yet to figure out why iPhoto design does this "library" way of storing everything. So far, using iPhoto instead of Adobe Bridge is very inflexible...but then again I'm migrating from Windows, so there may be ways of working with Apple's apps that aren't apparent to me.
Thanks for any advice or workarounds.

  • IPhoto editing problems

I'm have an iPhoto problem. I'm currently in version5.0.4 (263). In
edit mode when I try to bring up a photo with a date before October
2005 I get the spinning gear wheel and the image never loads. The
thumb nail is at the top of the page but the large, editable
picture doesn't load. There are only a very few photos pre-10/05
that will load. (All photos after that date seem to work fine.)
I went to the iPhoto library to check out those photos and find
that the information is available for the photo but under "Size" it
says "Zero KB on disk". However, on the iPhoto information window (lower left) the same photo's size is 1.5MB.
I tried opening some photos is Preview and Photoshop. In Preview I
get a blank screen. In Photoshop I get this message: "Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment lenth is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete)."
So, it seems like the thumbnail is still intact but the main file
is gone. Fortunately, I have all my photos backed up. But if I'm
going to use iPhoto (which I would like to do) I need to solve the
problem. I figure either there is problem with the software, or I
did something wrong in handling the photos.
In regards to the second, the only thing I can think of that might
effect the library is when I backed up. At this point I don't
remember the procedure I followed. But, if I dragged the folders
from the library to an external hard drive without making a copy,
would that remove the original information from the iPhoto library?
Any help on this will be appreciated.
iMac PowerPC G4/1GHz/768 MB   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the standard fix: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto + Photoshop how to sort /use both (workflow needed)

Hello, I love IPhoto for viewing and Photoshop CS2 for editing. However it seems since Iphoto will only import photos into the IPhoto library I have a problem with control over the folders and files.
How are other people using the two together?
For example I like to keep my originals in one folder. Go there and make edits and save in another folder.
I would like to open IPhoto and point it to only all my edits for viewing and creating slideshow ect.
But then on another day open it and then point it to only my orginals so i can choose what pictures to edit again
Is there another program like Picasso that is just a good viewer that doesn’t need to touch the folder structure I already have, or know a good workflow?

I use Photoshop exclusively for all my editing from within iPhoto. But you have to live with iPhoto's folder system: iPhoto Library Description. To use PS from within iPhoto go to iPhoto's preferences and in the General Pane under the Double-click photo section select "Opens photo in:" Then navigate to PS and select it.
Now when you double click on a photo PS will open and you can edit. The only caveat to that is if you create a layered or otherwise edited file that requires converting to ".psd" you must save it to the desktop and import it back into iPhoto. From then on you can edit and save all you want. To just save it into the folder where the original file was opened is tantamount to committing the cardinal sin of iPhoto: Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
If you want to use both PS and Apple and don't want to have to click on the Edit button go get into the iPhoto edit mode you can just reselect the Changes to edit view in the preferences and then Control-click on the photo and select "Edit in external editor". That way you can have the best of both worlds at your fingertips.

  • IPhoto & Photoshop CS3 extended

Hello everyone, I have a question related to Photoshop, I figured this would be a good place to find an answer. In photoshop CS3 extended, using the magnetic lasso to extract part of an image, after I extract the image, how do I put it somewhere else? I cannot find an answer to this anywhere on the web, so I thought I would try here, if anyone has the answer please help, I am really trying to figure this out before I drop the cash to buy it, I am on the free trial right now and the magnetic lasso feature is the only reason I want it. Thanks

After you select the area you want with the magic lasso, do a Command-X (cut) and then Command-V (paste). Change to the arrow cursor mode and click and drag the area you selected to wherever you want it. A new layer will be created with the cut and pasted area in it.
If you're considering PS CS3 just for the lasso feature you might consider Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. It has the same lasso feature and about 80 % of CS3's features at 1/7 the price. I wouldn't get CS3 for just that.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • Iphoto/photoshop help

i am trying to edit iphotos in photoshop 10 but am having some problems
    1. when i click external editor (i have set things up as per directions), the photo comes up in photoshop in a strange (to me) screen (not the normal editing screen).  at the bottom right, i click the "close image" box and i then revert to the normal editing screen.
    2. after editing, i try to save the edited picture back to iphote (again having set up the elements preferences appropriately (i think) to "save over original") but what i get showing up in iphoto is another copy of the original, not the edited version.
    would appreciate any help....
