IPhoto & Picasa Confusion

Hi, I'm a user of Google Picasa. Just shifted to a Macbook a week ago.
I have all my photos sorted out in folders. When i try to import these folders into iPhoto,
1. I loose the entire folder structure
2. Inspite of deselecting the 'Copy Photos to Library' option, the size of iPhoto library increases massively with every import. So i use up twice the space, one for my original pictures folder, and one for the library.
Is there no way that iPhoto can just 'Look' at my Folder structure as picasa does ? In case of picasa, changes made directly to the folder structure show up in the picasa library, and vice versa.
One more question, After I've imported all my pictures into the Library, is it OK to delete the folders from the Pictures Folder ? Even if i backup using timemachine, if for some reason my iPhoto Library goes corrupt, my entire collection is lost right ? I gotta say that the folders way of handling thing seems more reliable to me. Or am i just making things too complicated?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First things to make clear: iPhoto is not Picasa - nor vice versa.
Many folks coming over from Windows reflexively want to have the files in their own folders and manage them themselves. This is *not the best way to use iPhoto*. If you’re concerned about disk space then the duplicates to remove are your own filing structure. However, don‘t do this today. I think the best thing you can do is to create an iPhoto Library - Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' - and import maybe 100 pics into it and explore the app. Then when you feel more comfortable with it, bring the rest of the pics in.
I’m going to do this in reverse:
After I've imported all my pictures into the Library, is it OK to delete the folders from the Pictures Folder ?
Absolutely NOT if you’re running iPhoto with ‘Copy Files to the Library on Import unchecked. This is a Referenced Library and it means you have opted to manage the files yourself. If iPhoto is managing the files (‘Copy Files to the Library on Import is checked ) then yes it is. But consider my note above.
I gotta say that the folders way of handling thing seems more reliable to me. Or am i just making things too complicated?
iPhoto does absolutely nothing to your Photos on import. It simply makes a byte by byte copy of the files and stores them in - guess what - folders. The iPhoto Library is actually a special kind of folder, called a Unix Package File. Right Click on it and select ‘Show Package Contents’ from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
So, if iPhoto goes west, you can still recover your original files easily.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Folder:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
2. Inspite of deselecting the 'Copy Photos to Library' option, the size of iPhoto library increases massively with every import. So i use up twice the space, one for my original pictures folder, and one for the library.
Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". No photo app with editing can respect this flag, so iPhoto, seeing the flag, reads the intention and creates a modified version. If you then try to Revert to Original, iPhoto will remove the edited version. However, when it then looks at the Original file again, it sees the flag, and creates a new rotated version. This loop will run as long as you Revert to the Original. The solution is to either a: turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on your camera or b: rotate the photos prior to importing them to iPhoto.
A Comment on Referenced Libraries - that is, when you Uncheck ‘Copy Files on Import...’
In this mode iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, *you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system*.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, *I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers*.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
1. I loose the entire folder structure
You can quickly recreate your current folder structure in iPhoto. Start at the bottom of your hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Source (or left-hand) pane. Iphoto will create an Album of those images. You can create the enclosing Folders in iPhoto (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album of images to the folder. Repeat as necessary.
So, if you have a date based folder structure Folder-> 2008, Folder -> January, Date Januar1, January 2 etc. You can quickly mimic this in iPhoto.
That said, if you have a date-based folder structure it’s a total waste of time doing this in iPhoto. You can find the pics from any day, month or year using the Calendar tool - Click on the Magnifying Glass in the Search Box and select the Calendar) or by using Smart Albums: (File -> New Smart Album)
The Great strength of iPhoto is that you can manage your Photos independently of the files that contain them.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 20k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • Iphoto picasa

Hello - I would like to upload my pictures in iPhoto to my Picasa account. Does anybody know, if there is a quick way to do this? There used to be a Picasa Web Album Uploader for iPhoto - like this: http://picasa-web-albums.en.softonic.com/mac/download - but this doesn't work for me, I can't install it on my MacBook Pro, OX10.8.4?? Please help
I would like to do it this way, but is it possible?: http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-20084938-285/how-to-upload-photos-to-picasa- from-iphoto/?refresh=1375394868559#postComments

No idea - I do not use Picasa - probably a good question for the Picasa support web forum - or give it a try and see

  • Iphoto Library confusion- removing duplicates - photo appears too small now

I have a massive mess in my Iphoto library so please excuse the confusion of this question but I can't simplify it any more
    1) I had many duplicate photos so I recently started deleting duplicates manually through the Iphoto window.
    2) I also have two photo libraries. I made a new library awhile back on the advice of this forum as I had Question Marks instead of pictures. I never removed the old library and now not sure what to do with it. Should I trash it?
    3) After deleting duplicates and rebuilding thumbnail cache as it prompted me, now when I look at some of the photos they appear very small in the Iphoto viewer window and others appear fully. When I try to make them bigger in the Iphoto window they become fuzzy..
    4) However, when I look at the actual files in the library in the Finder, I see I still have these photos in quadruplicate plus I have backups on other drives..
5)When I look at each copy of the same exact photo all of them appear in Preview as the same size as they do in the Iphoto library window. All except one - this one appears full screen...and very clear. The one that appears clear is actually visible in the finder menu where as the others all just have the jpeg icon...
    6) How do I get my photos to appear as there full size in the iphoto library...Thank you....

  • IPhoto made a huge mess, how to clean up files on HD???

I have thousands of photos in iPhoto v6.0.6, and it has somehow made a huge frustrating mess of things. Some preliminary information:
    • My preference is set to "Copy photos to iPhoto Library folder when adding to library."
    • Under the main "Library" heading, I have five categories with the little yellow calendar icon: "Early Photos," "2007," "2008," "2009," "2010." I am under the impression that when adding/removing photos to an album, I am simply creating/removing links to the photos within these main categories. Therefore, I was assuming that if I delete the photos from these categories, they will disappear for good within the main Libraries as well as within individual Albums.
Earlier this evening I attempted to delete a bunch of photos which I don't want anymore... I want to get rid of these photos in iPhoto, but I would like to delete them from the hard drive as well. I went into each of the 5 categories under the main Library heading, and selected hundreds of photos to delete. After highlighting the photos I wanted to delete, I pressed Command-Delete on my keyboard (which, in the Photo menu, says it should move the photos to the trash). I assumed this meant it would move the physical files to the Finder's Trash. After deleting photos from the individual categories, I went into my Finder's Trash, and there was nothing there. So I noticed there is also a "Trash" section at the bottom of the left-hand pane within iPhoto (very confusing). All of my deleted photos were in there. So I selected them again, and pressed Command-Delete. All photos disappeared without a trace within iPhoto.
So far, so good.... My HUGE problem is that none of these photos were actually deleted from the hard drive!! I went into my home folder/Pictures/iPhoto Library/etc/etc/Camera Roll #x, and ALL of the photos I attempted to delete still reside on my hard drive as if they're still being managed by iPhoto!
I'll be honest... I have plenty of time to manually go through dozens of folders in the Finder and look for all of these photos a second time and delete them. However I'm simply not willing to waste time doing that when I thought I had already accomplished that task by selected "Move To Trash" from within iPhoto, and then emptying the trash. I'll just ditch iPhoto altogether if I can't fix this.
My questions: a) How can I get iPhoto to actually delete a photo when I tell it to (including thumbnails)? b) How can I clean up my hard drive automatically so that the only photos within the iPhoto Library folder (in the Finder) are those which still reside within iPhoto? c) How do I prevent this mess from happening again? d) If anyone from Apple is monitoring this forum, when will this major flaw in the user experience be fixed?

1 - it is a really good idea to post in the appropriate forum - you apparently posted an iPhoto 6 question in the iPhoto '09 forum - in this case the answer is the same for the questions you ask
    a) How can I get iPhoto to actually delete a photo when I tell it to (including thumbnails)?
Select the photo(s) in roll view and drag to the iPhoto trash or press the delete key - empty the iPhoto trash from the iPhoto menu ==> empty trash - do this in batches of 100 or less photos
    b) How can I clean up my hard drive automatically so that the only photos within the iPhoto Library folder (in the Finder) are those which still reside within iPhoto?
I'm not sure what happened and no longer have iPhoto 6 to test - one thing to try is backing up your library and rebuilding the library (depress the option and command keys and launch iPhoto)
    c) How do I prevent this mess from happening again?
Delete as above in answer to a)
    d) If anyone from Apple is monitoring this forum, when will this major flaw in the user experience be fixed?
SInce this is strictly a user to user forum and Apple specifically does not monitor nor answer here do not expect an answer from Apple
Also NEVER use the finder to make any changes to the contents or structure of the iPhoto library - doing so may corrupt your library and cause data loss

  • IPhoto Says iPhone Locked, But It Isn't--Can't Download Photos

How do I download photos from my iPhone 3G when iPhoto, Picasa, and Image Capture are all asking me to unlock my phone using my passcode, but my phone is unlocked!  This happened after I reauthorized my MacBook (may be a red herring).  Everything else appears to be working fine.  Thanks

far as I can see the apps I've got do not add up to the 12GB memory which my phone should have?!
Exactly, how much do they add up to?

  • Corrupt book in iPhoto: Weird '!' instead of pictures

I'm new to iPhoto and didn't know about starting iPhoto with the 'option' key pressed in order to get it to prompt to "create a new library". Instead, I just renamed my "iPhoto Library" folder by adding a "2" to the end. Then when I started iPhoto, I got the "create a new library" prompt (which I did). This resulted in a new folder "Party Library" (which I entered) inside my Pictures folder.
Next, I imported a bunch of photos and made a "book". This was quite a party and I was taking lots of pictures. At numerous times that evening, I would copy all the photos from the camera into iPhoto. I'd empty the camera each time and proceed to take more pictures. We were printing out the pictures to give to the guests so that is why I emptied the camera each time.
I made a nice 'book' with captions and was all set to send it to Apple for printing. I then carefully backuped the "Pictures Folder" onto a DVD just in case something went wrong.
When, I tried to transmit my book to Apple, that is when I had problems. It appears that the first step of renaming my "iPhoto Library" to create "Party Library" resulted in my identity getting messed up somehow. I'm not sure what an 'iLife' is but mine somehow got messed up. In any case, I couldn't successfully upload the book to Apple.
I went in an consulted with my Apple Genious who explained what went wrong. He helped me (I thought) by renaming my original library back to "iPhoto Library" and then showed me how to launch with the "option" key pressed. Now when I got the "choose library" prompt, I selected "Party Library". This is where things went bad...
Something happened to the book so that many of the pictures show up as a grey box with an '!' in the middle. Some of the pictures show up "just fine".
I can "get info" and get the JPG file name. From the finder when I search for that JPG name, I get lots of matches.
I don't know why but the pictures that are having problems have the same filename as other pictures in different folders in the "Party Folder". All the pictures that still display correctly DO NOT have such a name conflict.
Can someone explain why my camera named them the same? Eg: DSC_0003.JPG? Or was it something I did at this party as I loaded photos into iPhoto (and emptied the camera) many times... Or is it something that iPhoto did???
In any case, I think iPhoto got confused and doesn't know what picture to use. Could it have forgotten what folder the picture is in when there are duplicates in other folders? So, now all it can display is a '!' Weird.
In any case, does anyone have an idea on how I recover? I can find all the photos in the "Party Folder" but where does iPhoto store the book? Perhaps I can edit it (xml document per chance...) and patch-up the folder names... In any case, I can't find any files with a name like the name of my "book".
Another possible hint is I can move one of the problem photos (i.e. the '!') off the page and as I do, the '!' turns into a thumb-nail. So at least I can see what the picture was! I can park the 'thumb-nail' back into the photo bar (at the top of the work window). As I do this, that position in the page becomes 'available' for a new picture selection.
Now that I know what picture it is, I can delete it from the photo bar and go back to the Library and drag it back into the book. It then shows up again on the photo bar. Unfortunately, when I place it back onto the page, it still shows as a '!'
If anyone out there has any ideas, please respond!
    Regards, Christine

The ! shows up because the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window has lost the connection to the file it represents. There are two main reasons why this occurs: database coruption and/or User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder - in this case your Party Library.
    1. Hold down the abbpe and option keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild the database.
    2. Have you renamed, altered or moved anything in the Party Library Folder?
As for the mulitple versions of photos: Your Party Library (or any Library) is arranged as follows:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
This allows the Photos -> Revert to Original command - very useful if you don't like the changes you've made.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
So each version of the Image has a distinct role to play. To distinguish them in a Spotlight search, use file size - the tiny ones are your thumbnails etc.
Your Camera names the files. Some Cameras have a setting which allows them to sequentially number across cards. You can also use titling in the iPhoto Window to distinguish them (Photos -> Batch Change) and some people copy the pics onto their machines first, rename them with a batch renamer and then import them into iPhoto.
The book is simply a virtual album of photos and is part of the library6.iPhoto file.
As to your plan of moving and patching things up... It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss. SO try rebuild the database first.

  • The pictures i just dumped into iPhoto are HUGE!

Hi!  I just shot pictures of a very important soccer championship.  I came home, plugged camera in, opened iPhoto (which used to open automatically) and imported all pictures from camera.  I chose 'delete originals from camera.'
Then I went to Picasa and uploaded them there to share with my boss who would then be able to put them on his website for the team.  I noticed some were rejected and the entire storage bank for pics was full.
When I investigated a little further, I realized that all of the pics are over 4MB ea!
I don't know why they're so huge and have no idea how to change them.
    Can anyone help??
    Thanks,
    Christine

When it comes to Picasa or iPhoto the simple advice is to pick on horse and ride it. You're using two apps to do the same job and things are fallign through the cracks:
With the last pics I took for him, I must have uploaded directly to Picasa because I'm not finding those in my iPhoto library.
You can upload to Picasa Web Albums from iPhoto, - google for the iPhoto Picasa plug-in - or just use the standard uploader - the first of these here:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
AS for the size of the images, that's entirely a setting on your camera.

  • IPhoto loosing and mixing up photos

iPhoto is confusing old photos with new photos. After a recent import, the new photos disapeared, leaving behind only a dotted outline of where they once where. The disk was searched, they completely diaspeared. Suspecting director damage, I ran disk first aid, but no problems found. Too bad diskwarrior has not been updated yet. So, moving forward, I did another import of our next photos, this time I left the originals on the camera. The photos stayed this time, but it wasn't a few days before some of my new photos were "replaced" with an old photo. Fortunately I made a back-up before moving to my Mac Book, unfortunately, the backup appears to contain the directory daamage because I have replaced the iPhoto library twice now with the DVD backup, and it follows this patteren of curruption. I've tried the rebuild iPhoto database, rebuilt thummbnails, no go. I'm officially giving up. Exporting all my iPhotos out of the corrupt version, starting a new iPhoto library from scratch, and reimporting. Of course this is going to cause a major loss of data and organization (all my photos from the past 4 years (over 5k of them), will al be in one import time). Hopefully the EXIF data will be preserved. I'm just posting this to make Apple aware of this issue. I don't know if its an Intel issue, an iPhoto '06 issue, or combination of the above.

What is going on with iphoto 6. This is the second time in 3 months I'm going through this nightmare of a corrupted library. I'm really frustrated with this otherwise cool software. At it's most basic level it has to be able to keep your data in order. Otherwise all the other bells and whistles have no point.
The problem manifests as ghost (dotted line) outlines and insanely slow response. Also most photos never come up in the edit mode, terminal spinning wheel.
I've tried all the same steps the previous poster tried and them some. I emptied the trash then rebuilt the library(had 2k photos in it mostly deleted duplicates from the last time it screwed the pooch). I exported the entire library then went through it looking for corrupted files and set them aside to reimport from a previous library. I searched for duplicate numbers in the corrupted files that might confuse the database in iphoto and removed them from iphoto or changed the title. Between these step I rebuilt hoping for a miracle, it never came.
I have now restored from a back up (apple) from before the first problem occurred and still it's no good. During the restoration, back up kept stopping to tell me about files it could not restore (21 of them). Only one of these was a corrupted file I found through my previous labors, the others seemed OK in the finder using preview to check them.
Whats my next step? Deleted the current library and create a new one!? This cant be corrected? WHAT AM I DOING to bring this 3 days of horror on!? Just before it all went bad THIS time I had built a web site using iweb. Is there weirdness here?
Is there known issues with iphotos stability as you add and delete and edit photos? Can I avoid operations which are known to cause corruption. Just tell us please! I've seen the other threads that sound eerily like this is common. Please some light.

  • Images are on top of each other.

Forgive me, but I will explain this as best I can. We just got our iMac. We have 2 cameras that we use. So I imported some pictures from church last night. They show up in my library at the bottom AND the top (as if they were imported twice). Now, if I'm at the top of my library and double-click on an image, it brings me to the editing room. But now instead of the picture being the one from church, the enlarged picture is a construction picture taken by another camera (and the picture in the toolbar area is still the picture from church - they don't match). However, those same church pictures at the bottom of the library don't have that problem - they are what they should be. And there are some other images like that, too (but not all of my pictures have done that). And they don't have the same file name, so it's not like iPhoto is confused by that. Also, if I'm scrolling through, I will see pictures from church, and when I stop scrolling, the construction pictures come in and take their place.
Any ideas??? Why is it double-importing and placing images on top of each other like that? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks for any help you might have on this.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.

  • Wireless transfer of photos from camera to Macbook Pro (help)

Im sorry if this might not be the correct place to ask about it but Im going to give it a try.
I know this can be done because professionals are doing it across the globe already.
I just purchased a Canon 50D along with a WFT-E3A wireless transmitter. I shoot professional Lacrosse in Chicago and for the first time will be trying out the possibility of sending photos straight from my camera to my new Macbook Pro. If this works then my next purchase is going to be the WFT-E2 and a Canon 1D MK III to complete the process.
The main idea is that I will be doing shooting all over the arena and just sending them back to my laptop and having my assistant taking care of post processing of them and then uploading to a website.
But now comes the fun part.
Because this is one step above me setting up a normal wireless network like I have at home for me to get onto the internet. I don't really know where to start on setting up a specific network and configuring it to just have the camera and computer "talk" to each other.
My thoughts are that I would like to have one specific network setup for my laptop at the games when shooting. And then just bring it back home and switch it back over to the normal network I have set up to get my internet wirelessly.
I have been talking with several Genius people here in Madison and was told there are two types of networks to set up, Ad Hoc and Infrastructure.
I have been told to set it up an infrastructure network because this is going to give me widest range for me to be further away from my computer.
The question that is puzzling most of the Genius people and myself is this. Should I have one or several base stations placed somewhere in the arena between me and the computer helping me out so I don't lose signal between the two devices?
If that is the case how would I set up the base station in order to relay or transmit the signal from my laptop to my camera?
After I get this portion all set up I think it isn't going to be an issue of getting the camera to talk with my laptop. But that is another issue that I will need to pose to other photographers or maybe a canon rep directly.
    Ok Im all ears now!
    Thanks,
    Ross

There is more than one date that can be associated with an image, and I think you're running into different programs displaying different dates. This is not a comprehensive list but:
Capture date: Date and time the photo was recorded by the camera clock, stored in EXIF camera data.
Created date: Date and time the photo was first saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Modified date: Date and time the edited photo was last saved to disk by photo software on a computer
Archived date: I'm not really sure but I see this in detailed photo information too.
Furthermore, these dates can be stored in various additional date fields in other IPTC metadata sections, and various software might not write or read them in the same ways as other software.
But what I think is going on in your case is that the iPhoto Info panel is displaying the Capture Date from the camera recorded EXIF data, but what you see in the Finder are the Created and Modified dates.
If I'm right, then LexSchellings' column suggestion may not work because all you would get is the File Created date, not the camera recorded Capture Date. I do not know of a way to display camera EXIF capture date in the Finder. Generally, organizing photos using that data is done using a photo management app like iPhoto, Picasa, Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge, Media Pro, etc., not on the desktop.
If you were able to view the Capture Date in Windows Explorer, then that's an advantage that Windows Explorer (the desktop) had over the Finder. I've seen other cases where the Finder couldn't do something Windows Explorer could, so I wouldn't be surprised.
As far as the duplicates, I don't really know but I did a search at macupdate.com and you might want to check some of these utilities that can help resolve duplicates.

  • Transfer of Pictures from PC to MacBook Pro

Two questions. I recently bought a MacBook Pro and successfully transferred pictures from our PC. Although photographs in IPhoto retain the dates on which they were originally taken, those in Pictures only have the date on which they were transferred, ie 'created', entirely unhelpful. How do I access the original date on which the photographs were taken, not available under Info?
Second question, more complicated, duplication of photographs in IPhoto and Pictures: is there a simple way of merging them? We used to download pictures from IPhone onto our PC under date folders, without realising they were being duplicated. Identifical pictures appear in about 6 different folders - how I can I edit them without having to do so manually?
Any help (not too technical) gratefully received.

  • Bug in Preview's Exif viewer (inverted GPS coordinates)?

    Hi,
I've been scratching my head quite a lot over this one...
I'm finalizing an application that gets your GPS coordinates off your Google Latitude history and uses them to geotag your pictures. The idea is to make it easier to use the "Places" functionality of iPhoto, Picasa, etc...
Anyway, I cannot explain why Preview seems to display an incorrect longitude (it drops the "-" sign which places a California picture somewhere in China...) when Exiftool, Picasa and, yes, even iPhoto seem to get it right.
I know some of you will probably think I'm looking at 2 different pictures (I probably would think the same if I were you) but I've double, triple checked. In fact a simple "Show in finder" from iPhoto or Picasa will bring up the picture for me to double-click.
    Anyway, see for yourself:
    The picture in question
    Exiftool
    in iPhoto
    in Picasa
    in Preview
    Any feedback appreciated.

    tbertran wrote:
However, that would not explainwhy the very complete exiftool output is spotless (as far as I can tell). IPhoto and Picasa also get it right...
That's all well and good. But even if you have smoking-gun evidence that there is a bug in Preview (and it isn't a show-stopping bug either), it will be months, if not years until said bug is fixed. Until then, your output will not work in Preview. So, in any case, you are going to have to modify your code to produce output that Preview can read. Other applications are able to produce such files that Preview can understand. What is the difference?
My advice is to continue working with other tools to generate identical files with identical tags. Then find the difference in output between the other tool and yours. That should identify where the bug lies.

  • Helping my dad with mega photo project....

He has about 35,000 pics from various trips over the years.
Trouble is, they're on cards, on his Mac (20,000 approx.) and on an external hardive too.
No surprise he's having problems with iPhoto now - confusing mess of events, duplicates, slow processing, etc
He's pretty clueless and I'm a Windows guy, but I said I'd try to help him out.
I think he mainly just wants to sort through everything, label, delete pics he doesn't like, and then eventually make slideshows with music.
    So here's my suggestion:
    Delete everything off his iPhoto/Mac.
Painstakingly transfer everything from cards onto mega external hardive.
Sort through everything, label, organize, delete etc off the external hardive.
And then begin to slowly load folder after after onto iPhoto in an organized, logical, manner.
    What do you think?
Maybe for what he wants to do, iPhoto will only screw him up - once there are like 10,000+ photos crammed on there?
All suggestions are most welcome! : )

iPhoto 11 is good for 1,000, 000 images, earlier versions for 250k.
If space is a concern the Library can be on an external disk with no performance hit.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
Of course you need a second drive to back it up.

  • Working with Images

Hi, I'm working on a new MacBook Pro and find iPhoto cumbersome/confusing (compared to my old PC system, I have to say).
I import images from a memory card and they appear in iPhoto. That's fine.
I want to adjust them in Photoshop, but can't while theyre in iPhoto. That's stupid (or I am. Quite possible).
I want to transfer files from iPhoto into a Folder file and select and copy all the relevant images. Then I open the folder and select Paste, but only a selction of there are there. If I copy 30, only 19 will paste. If I copy 100, only abot 70 will paste.
    Very frustrating!
    What am I doing wrong???

I just use Lightroom catalogs to organize my workflow - the only time that I use iPhoto is for jpg images - most of what I shoot are RAW, so I've Lightroom catalogs that I use. Just import the files into Lightroom, do most CC there and then open in Photoshop for editing.
I think I've about 18,000 jpg photos in iPhoto going back 11 years or so... But I just looked and my last imprt was November 15, 2012 so you can see that I don't use it very often.

  • 5d Mark III not downloading RAW

Got my 5D Mark III a couple of days back. I took a few pictures in RAW-JPEG. While I tried to download, it launches EOS Utility(latest version) and hangs. I tried the same CF card on 40D and it was able to import without problem. I tried other software like Picasa, Adobe Bridge, iPhoto, Picasa and Adobe are not able to connect to the camera. EOS Utility is able to connect and I was able to remotely control the camera and take photos. I was able to download JPEG only files as well. But when it comes to Raw, the software goes unresponsive and loses connection. Once in a while everything works fine as well (even RAW), that is the strange part
My Computer and softwares are up-to-date. Infact the 5D MIII I got through CPS Load worked fine without issues. I also made sure the CF Card and Cable are also fine.
Is it a known problem? or should I return the camera. Thanks in advance for your response

As Stephen said, any additional info about your system will help indeed.
In my case I'm using Win XP 32 bit in this machine and don't have any problems at all to download RAW+JPG.
I'm using the bundled software that came with the camera (CD/DVD), still didn't update it.
    - Just in case, why don't you try uninstalling EOS Utility software and all its additional components, and reinstall it again from the CD/DVD? At least to discard a software malfunction.
    - BTW, we found that many USB cables worked fine with 5D Mark II but not with 5D Mark III. After changing the USB cable we were able to connect the camera to the computer without any problem. Sounds weird, but after some use the connectors of some USB cables loosen and don't work properly on some cameras or devices.
