Iphoto pickle

Help!
I've had a unlucky history with emac, several bad crashes, and had to resinstall OS three times due to 'kernal panics' and other annoying issues which have cost me weeks' of work.
Now after latest re-install, using 10.3, later updated to 10.39, the system seemed to have wiped my iphoto files completely; kept on external HD. Found most of pics on previous library and managed to move manually but iphoto failed to recognise many of these. Several dozen mayeb hundreds still not being 'recognised' missing.
Now have deleted newer 4 version of iphoto by mistake, leaving only 2. Sh%$£!t
1.HOw can I just install iphoto 4 from OS disk without going through complete reinstall? Is this safe? Will I risk losing photos?
2.There must be some way of finding/locating all my pics and shifting them to iphoto 4 when running again retaining captions etc without having to copy all from library folder
many many thanks for all suggestions
Iain

thanks you very much for yourt help. but I still keep getting messages saying must use a 'newer' version of iphoto.
After follwing your advice and a custom install of iphoto from OS10.3 disk, it STILL says I am runinng iphoto 2, and that I must use 'updated' version - which I have cert not purchased.
So does this mean that 10.3 only came with iphoto 2?? This would seem logical, but where on earth did I get later version from? My (very troublesome) emac did have to go for repair a few months ago, I'm wondering if technican installed a later version of iphoto for me. He DID upgrade 10.28 to 10.39 for me, without me asking for this.
There seem to be a lot of iphoto 2s reappearing on these forums, after long absenses!
still confused in the UK

  • Iphoto Upgrade Pickle

    Hello,
I am needing help with getting my iPhoto on new MacBook Pro to work properly. I have tried a few steps and am stumped at current position, I will try to explain where I am stuck. I am looking to accomplish two things. Have my iPhoto library on my Mac and able to backup in my Amazon Drive.
Moved my old MacBook Pro (needs new mother board) iPhoto library to an NAS (Network Attached Storage AKA external HD). Worked fine from there.
Got new MacBook Pro with Yosemite running iPhoto 9.6. First attempt to load my iPhoto library and it prompts for a upgrade to read my iPhoto library.
During upgrade iPhoto freezes, I did force quite.
Once reopen iPhoto same message my library needs to be upgraded, try again and this time it gets to the "examining files", then iPhoto crashes itself with no report or issue errors.
On my NAS device the folder looks like the new version of iPhoto. I tried an older version of iPhoto and it wont load the library, forgot which message it displayed.
Tried iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 - Message said my iPhoto was already up to date.
Tried Command, Option while loading iPhoto then did option of repairing, then after iPhoto loads same screen of upgrade required and crashes after "examining files".
Partial work - following advise of Terence Devlin downloaded iPhoto Library Manager. I can see my photos it also displays what version of iPhoto 7.1.5
Once I try "open iPhoto" in iPhoto Library Manager, iPhoto starts back at the needs upgrade part.
In addition I know Terence Devlin recommends backing up before working on library. I am trying via Amazon Drive but my selection tools are not recognizing my iPhoto folder on my external HD. They did before all this upgrade stuff but not now.
What are my next steps to resolving this?
    In Short:
    Current iPhoto: 9.6
    Library iPhoto: 7.1.5

    A few things
The iPhoto library must always be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journal) that is locally connected with a fast wired connection
Therefore you can not have it on a NAS nor can you backup it up to Amazon drive - it must either be on your internal drive or on a correctly formatted external hard drive directly connected - and the backup should be local - thee is no Cloud backup that has proven to be able to back up the iphoto library
Until the library is in the correct place it is impossible to proceed - you may (or may not) have additional problems to resolve then

  • Fixing iPhoto for modified originals

Hey all...I'm in a bit of a pickle. A while back, I got it into my head that I should start shooting RAW, even though I rarely adjust any of my photos. For more than a year, I tore through every last megabyte on my iMac's hard drive. All my photos are stored (and backed up) in folders outside of my iPhoto library.
At one point, when I was running less than a gigabyte free, I saw that iPhoto was using over 30GB just for a full-size JPEG copies of every RAW one. I deleted these, and since this was back with the previous version of iPhoto, it would still load the original file after a bit of a delay. iPhoto '08 removed that feature and now it never loads the file, just shows a horribly ugly (scaled up 40x or so) question mark logo. So that's half the pickle...I can "reprocess RAW" but simply didn't have the space.
Realizing I was fighting a losing battle, I decided I didn't want the double overhead of using RAW files. I wrote an Automator action and have been convert them all to JPEG, archiving the .cr2 files on discs and then deleting them off my disk. This really made iPhoto hate me. Now every time I import photos, it pops up a hundred dialogs saying a photo is missing (yes, I know) and do I want to find it? Each one of these dialogs makes the import pause, so I can't just walk away and have iPhoto inform me of the gory details later. (Today I got so frustrated that I hit "Mute", set my wireless mouse on the spacebar, and prayed that no serious dialog would come up from another program during the import.)
    So my question is this:
Is there a way to easily either 1) automatically tell iPhoto that the JPEGs are the RAW photos, just with different format/name or 2) automatically apply events and ratings to a fresh library from the old library? I tried deleting (moving, rather) everything but the AlbumData.xml file from my iPhoto Library and then doing a Cmd-Option repair, but that file appears to be 110% read-only. (Otherwise I could "Find and Replace" in that file and be on my way.)
At this point I'm almost tempted to throw in the towel and start from scratch. Maybe it will speed startup/shutdown and reduce hangs — couldn't hurt anyway. Only a small percentage my photographs are rated or in custom-split events, but out of nearly 43,000 that's still a few and I'd lose all 1,374 hand picked Event Key Photos too.
It's really frustrating that every time I start investing in a photo library/program, I end up needing to start from scratch again. When I moved from Picasa to iPhoto years ago, I had only a fraction of the photos I do now. Does iPhoto have any sorta-hidden Import options besides "Librarify all these images as brand new"?
    thanks,
    -natevw

I accept all responsibility for mucking about in the internals/referenced files, and certainly don't want to encourage anyone who isn't willing to risk complete destruction of their library to do so. I urgently needed free space, I knew my original pictures were safe outside of iPhoto's database package, and I made a backup of the AlbumData.xml so as to a least have a non-proprietary memento of my metadata. Don't try any of that at home unless you're willing to risk *complete data loss* or the sort of pain I describe above.
You can try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back. However - and this is big however, it all depends on the set up of your AlbumData.xml file, which is likely to be terminally confused at this point - but give it a go. It won't make anything worse.
Excellent! That sounds like precisely what would be helpful at this point. Over the weekend it appears I added incompetence to willful negligence by accidentally importing photos from my removable backup drive rather than my internal one. I've written off that library as a loss, but have been careful about backing up the AlbumData.xml file.
(Oh, btw, that AlbumData.xml file is not the database file, it's simply the file that other apps use to integrate with iPhoto. Changing things there won't help.)
I was aware that in normal use this file is just dumped to by iPhoto for third-party use. I was hoping iPhoto could at least be forced to manually restore afresh from it, but if an independent program can do this trick for it, then they've earned my $20.
Finally, is there a reason why you've chosen to manage the photos yourself? Much of what you've gone through would have been avoidable if you had let iPhoto do it - and even more importantly, recovering the situation would have been easier too.
Keeping the "Finder world" and the "iPhoto world" separate lets me backup my photos. I copy pictures from my cards directly onto two different hard drives, before erasing them off the card. I can also burn discs more easily; when I have enough new nnnCANON folders to fill a DVD, I archive them. iPhoto's database wants to be treated as a single opaque file even though its caches alone would fill several DVDs. To my mind, iPhoto is just a browser/organizer and I like to manage underlying files manually.
I also trust the basic operating system more than iPhoto with my (to me) precious originals. While I have no doubts that the iPhoto team is competent and conscientious, the HFS+ filesystem doesn't get a point release every few months and a major upgrade every year or two. I am slowly learning to not fight the system, but in this case there is no way I would consider letting iPhoto sequester hundreds of gigabytes of my least-recreatable data inside one package I am not supposed to look inside.

  • Merging confusion iphoto in aperture

Now I think I really know the end result of my pickle but I had some questions.
I got Aperture today to try it out and read about merging iphoto lbs into one, I was so excited so I started merging them, and watched my 1 iphoto library grow on my internal. Once I saw the space increase and the photos appear in aperture i deleted the library, rinse wash repeat.  Im down to my last two iphoto librarys and realize that some photos are missing refernce files....  It appears some of my Iphotos came over and COPIED into the ONE library whereas others just made references. Now i did the same steps for all, file- import- libary, no prompts just did its thing
I am currently trying to recover my iphotos from never ever land.... It seems right now all i have is thumbnails...   Curious to any more information on merging and what i did not understand/ went wrong

In iPhoto you have two ways to import photos: referenced and managed.
    Managed vs. referenced:
If the "Importing : Copy items to the iPhoto Library" flag is enabled, then your images are managed and stored inside the iPhoto Library.
If this flag is disabled, you are importing referenced, and your iPhoto library does not contain the images, but references the originals outside the library. If you delete them, they will be gone from iPhoto. I suspect, you may have imported a part of your images to iPhoto as referenced, and thus Aperture could not import them into the Aperture library.
Check this flag in iPhoto, how it is set.
Before you import your other iPhoto Libraries, check where originals are actually stored by iPhoto. You can select the images and use the file menu to show them in the Finder:
"File > Reveal in Finder > Original File"
If this is not inside the iPhoto library, you can point Aperture to this location after importing to Aperture. If originals are missing or offline, they can be reconnected using "File > Locate referenced file".
Bt what exactly are you seeing in Aperture right now, after importing your iPhoto libraries?
Do you see empty frames outlined  by dashes where your thumbnails should be? Or thumbs marked by arrow badges or crossed ou arrow badges?
To find out the state of your images,  I'd suggest to define several smart albums, based on the file status of your images.
    From the File menu select:
File > New > Smart Album
Then, in the "Smart Settings" HUD click "Add Rule" and select "File Status".
    Switch the selector to "Missing".
This will create an album with all images with original image files that Aperture cannot find.
Repeat this with the other file status setting: references, offline, managed.
Then post back and tell us please the state of the images you imported.

  • IPhoto '09 - Thumbnails visible but no photos!  (exclamation mark)

    Hi everyone,
I'm in a bit of pickle here and I hope someone can help me. I take photos pretty regularly. Nothing mind-blowing, but I use my iPhone to take pics of my dogs, my girlfriend, etc. I sync my phone pretty much everyday and I just realised today that I'm missing a bunch of photos that span over 4-5 months. The thumbnail for the album itself is BLANK, but when I go into the album all the thumbnails for the photos are still there. However, when I try to maximise the photo I get nothing but a big grey exclamation mark.
I have tried different things like 'Open in Finder' and expanding the iPhoto app to show the folders inside and then try to find the photos myself, but nothing seems to work. I have also tried rebuilding my library with no success. I checked my recent Time Machine save, but somehow the iPhoto backup shows the same events in my iPhoto having issues. I don't understand how this could have happened, because I upload and sync my iPhone so often that I should've noticed at one point over the last month that my photos were missing - I have trouble believing I could've missed these missing events over the last month every single time I synced. But my last save shows the same thing and I don't understand how this is possible. I'm stupid for not having backed up my photo collection another way, but I thought I was being pretty careful.
Is there a bug that can cause this? What else can I do to get my photos back? or am I simply S.O.L.? I have read about many horror stories about iPhoto 09 but nothing that covers my situation closely enough to help me.
Any help would be appreciated. I apologise if I wasn't clear or if I didn't give you enough details.
Thanks in advance for any help!

I have what I thought was a similar problem, only now I'm not so sure. It seems instead to be linked to the faces feature.
I recently migrated from a macbook to a macbook pro. However my 30K pictures are contained not on the computer but on a separate external HD. I plugged the HD into the new iphoto '09 and get all the thumbnails. However when I click on one the screen goes dark: no photo. I read this thread but before rebuilding anything, since the photos wouldn't have really been affected by migration assistant, I don't think, I decided to just quit iphoto and see if things fixed themselves this way. When I reopened iphoto indeed the pictures do load at first, but then after faces starts scanning it stops bringing up any photos.
So.... it takes a very long time to scan 30K faces but when it finally does, I get instructions to click on a photo, then on faces and start identifying photos. I can't get that far because, again, when I click on a photo the faces feature does highlight, only I can't see the photo.
¿ Does it really make sense to rebuild the library under these circumstances? I don't see how it can have been affected by the migration.
¿ Any ideas how to get faces to stop disabling access to the full photos, if that's what's happening?
Many, many thanks for your thoughts....
p.s. The old library was set up for iphoto '07 (or whatever came before iphoto '09) and upon trying to open up in iphoto '09 I was prompted to tweak the library for the new software ... I wonder if that could have resulted in a need to rebuild?
    TIA!!

  • Get old Aperture library into iPhoto without need to upgrade Aperture first?

I've my photo libraries in an old Aperture format. I didn't upgrade to Aperture 3, because I didn't get a new Mac until recently. Now with Yosemite my old Aperture app can't be installed anymore (neither old iPhoto). So I've not an old Aperture library file which I'd like to import into the new iPhoto, but I get the dialog that I've to upgrade to Aperture 3 first.
Do I really have to purchase a $80 upgrade to get my pictures out of an old version of Aperture? I'd upgrade to Aperture 3 and continue using it if it wasn't already announced to be discontinued soon. But what to do until the new Photo.app is available some time in 2015, plus who knows whether the announced "will be able to import Aperture libraries" isn't also limited to Aperture 3+ versions?
You see my pickle?! I can't run old Aperture on Yosemite, I can't import my old Aperture library into the new iPhoto and Photo.app isn't available yet. What to do?
The option to run an old OS X via VMWare, import Aperture to old iPhoto and then upgrade to new iPhoto also seems a bit much work.
What I am looking for would essentially be a "Import Aperture 2 library into (new) iPhoto" script/tool/converter.
    Thanks,
    -H

    Crrect - as I said
you can get the original photos out by copying the masters folder and importing to iPhoto
And yes there is no good solution for switching from a outdated software package to a different up to date one - Aperture or pretty much any other software - iPhoto will update all old iPhoto libraries and Aperture will update all old Aperture libraries but iPhoto will not update old Apertue libraries nor will Aperture update old iPhoto libraries

  • Merging iphoto libraries from an external drive?

    Hey there-
In pickle here and could use some help.
    1) My old MBP was running out of HD space so I put my iPhoto library on to an external hard drive.
    2) Last week that old MBP died! I can target boot to it but it doesn't boot up by itself.
    3) I have a newer MBP that I use. How can I merge the library from the external to my new MBP? Hate to lose all my family photos!
    Thanks for you help!
    Dooki

You can only merge libraries using Aperture if you have a version of iphoto that can share libraries with Aperture or using the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
if you have photos in your  current iPhoto library you can renmae it and then drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder and switch libraries by depressing the option key and holding it until the select library window comes up rather than merging the libraries

  • Iphoto crashing after using mini-dvi to video adapter

Hi, IPhoto on my Macbook is crashing. I can open it, then as soon as I scroll down it locks up and I have to force quit.
This started happening right after I used a Mini-DVI to Video Adapter cable to hook my macbook up to my TV. The adapter/s-video connection worked and I was able to see the video on the tv. But iphoto immediately locked up the computer when I went to slide show and now it locks every time I open it.
    Any ideas?
    Thank you:)
    Dorothy

It means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Cannot open and update IPhoto after upgrading to OXYosemite

From the App store, I downloaded and installed OXYosemite. There are 2 more updates available: iPhoto and iMovie. When I try to upload them, the notice I get is "Update Unavailable with This Apple ID  This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
I have 2 apple IDs when I inquire about my ids. Signing in App Store with either of them, doesn't resolve the problem. I get the same notice. iTunes, Mac, mobile downloads, all use the same apple IP, only for the computer downloads from App Store isn't working.
    What should I do?
    Thanks, Sev

I have the same problem and can't find out how to correct it.  Unable to update iPhoto or iMovie .. I get the same message as above user.  Help!

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

When using the mini-dvi to video adapter to connect to my widescreen tv (via composite), to show iPhoto slideshows, the transistions between slides dont apear and there are no ken burns effects. The slideshow runs fine on my MacBook display (ie when not conected to the tv), and the is no other distortion or flickering (as reported in other threads), this seems odd to me or is it just a limitation of analogue output.

    Option 2

  • I create a birthday calendar in iCal and then click on it in iphoto at the begining of the calendar project each year.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project?

I created a birthday calendar to use in iphoto for calendar.  When a new calendar project is started each year, I click on it in.  Some how the birthday did not populate the photo calendar this year.  The photo calendar is almost complete.  Is there a way to add the birthday iCal calendar into the calendar project? I would prefer not to start over.

    Hi,
If you first select the calendar on the left, so that its background is highlighted blue/grey, when you make a new events they should be added to that calendar.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto '08 library to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.

I am trying to move my wife's iPhoto (2007) library on a Macbook to my new iMac for iPhoto '11.  First, when I opened iPhoto on the iMac it asked me to create a library, which I did.  Then I imported her photos via a wireless network to my "new" library.  However, when it finally finished importing, it had imported 3 copies of each photo from her library.  I deleted the "new" library and started over.
Second, I opened iPhoto on the iMac and chose to use "other library."  I chose my wife's shared iPhoto library and it began transferring the photos to the new iMac (or so I thought).  This worked beautifully as it only brought over single photos and not 3 copies like discussed above.  After editing the new library and adding some photos from an old PC, I shut down iPhoto.  A few hours later I tried to open iPhoto on the iMac and it gave me the opening screen again with choices to create a new library or use a different library.  As it turns out, my wife's Macbook and been disconneted from our wireless network.  I was able to figure out that that unless my wife's Macbook is connected to the network then I cannot access the iPhoto library on my iMac.  I was under the impression that I had copied her library to my computer and that the photo files were now on the hard drive of the iMac.  So when her computer is offline I can no longer access the imported library.  I want her library to stay on the iMac as we plan to sell her Macbook.  As you now know, we cannot access her iPhoto library on the Macbook since she is running an older version of iPhoto.
So, what I would like to do is to completely transfer the photos from her Macbook to my new iMac and be able to access them on the iMac regardless of whether she is on the network or not because we plan to sell her Macbook to a friend.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.
