Iphoto picture importing issues

After importing my existing iphoto's library into a new mac mini, it seems that whilst all photo's are visible, some just display an exclamation mark against a grey background when they are double clicked for a zoomed in view?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

IPhone 4 and iPhoto 9 import issue

I just bought an iPhone 4 to replace my iPhone 3GS a few days ago. I finally had a chance to try its camera this weekend. Much to my surprise, all the photos I imported into iPhoto 9 on my MacBook Pro lost their XIF and geotag data once they landed in my iPhoto 9 library. I deleted the photos from my iPhone 4 so I couldn't go back to verify that the information was there. So tonight, I went out for a walk and I shot a few more photos with my iPhone 4. Instead of importing them into iPhoto 9, I used Image Capture to import them from my iPhone 4 into my MBP's Pictures folder. Then I checked and all the XIF and geotag data survived the transfer. I then imported the photos into iPhoto 9 by dragging them onto its icon in the Dock. I then was able to view the XIF and geotag data from within iPhoto 9.
So my question is, why can't iPhoto 9 import the XIF and geotag data in photos directly from the iPhone 4? Is there any way I can fix this via some optional setting or am I do I need to wait for Apple to resolve this issue?

I don't have any problem importing photos from my iPhone 4 with iPhoto '09 (v 8.1.2)--it just works, so I really don't know what might be going wrong. I import by selecting my iPhone 4 in the iPhoto Devices and then select the ones I want to import and click on import selected. It has never failed to also import the EXIF data including the geolocation/camera info.

IPhoto 6 - Import issue, hangs at end

Folks, any help with this would be much appreciated.
I installed iLife 06 and all went well, other than the "recovered photos" issue which others have mentioned - no biggie as there were only 3.
But I have a problem now when importing from disc (HD or CD) - in that the import goes ahead, but freezes at the end. iPhoto doesn't freeze - you can look at folders / the library etc.. while the import process is hanging - and interestingly the library does include the photos within the import which has hung.
The import will hang for ages (hours, not seconds), and I can't stop it using the stop import button, nor can I quit iPhoto (hoping it will tidy up).
After 30mins+ of waiting, a couple of times, I've force-quit iPhoto. When opening again, the pics aren't in the library - but looking with the finder they do all exist in the originals folder, and the data folder.
A total rebuild of the library fails to include the pics.
Anyone else had this? I'm a pretty vanilla user - I haven't mucked about in my old iPhoto 5 library at all etc...
One related question - the following files are in my iPhoto Library - judging by their dates (I installed iLife on Jan 24) and names, are some old iPhoto 5 files?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The albums folder is a carryover from the V4 days and is no longer useful. You can trash it. Albums are now identified and linked within the AlbumData.xml file with no aliases being used any more.
The Library6.temp is not normally in a library folder. It's probably left over from one of your forced quits and can be deleted.
How much free space do you have on your HD? Have you tried rebuilding the library? Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. I'd select the first three options.

Problem with iPhoto pictures imported into Aperture 3

I recently put together few thousand pictures I had in iPhoto with several other thousands I had on Aperture 3.
I just realized the pictures I imported from iPhoto have all a litle exclamation mark with an arrow just like this:
When I try to export any of these images, or create a book, or email them it gives me an error message just like this:
When I imported the pictures, I drag them into Aperture. Not sure what happened and why the original files were not imported as well.

This looks like your iPhoto Library may have been a referenced library - check, if the iPhoto preferences "Advanced" settings are set to "Importing: Copy items into the iPhoto Library". If this option has been unchecked, when you imported to iPhoto, your iPhoto Library references the images and does not include them. And if you import a referenced library to Aperture these images also will be referenced in Aperture.
How exactly did you import from iPhoto to aperture, and what are your iPhoto and Aperture versions? Where are the libraries located that you importet? On an external volume?
Try, if the links become active, when you connect the external volume again.

IPhoto 6 Import Issue

While importing from my digital camera (which I have done a lot in the past), a couple of moving pictures were taking a long time. I "stopped import". The next time I went to my IPhoto, it said "2 photos have been found in the Photo Library that were not imported. Would you like to import them?" When I clicked on "Yes", the application began spinning. My Mac froze; I could not quit appl, command-option-esc did respond, could not switch apps, etc. The only way to end this was to do a hard power down from the power switch. The next time I opened IPhoto it told me I had *4 photos* not imported. Every time I click "Yes" to import, my Mac freezes and the next time it indicates double the amount of photos to import. If I say "No", I just go into IPhoto as per normal. It does still allow me to import new photos into IPhoto, it is just irritating. I attempted to plug in my camera again, but that did not help.
Any suggestions?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Quit iPhoto. In the Finder, look just inside your Pictures/ iPhoto Library folder for a folder called Importing. If it is there, drag it out of the library onto your Desktop. Launch iPhoto and see if that message does not come up. *Don't change anything else while you are looking in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder, as damage to your library can result.*
Now to import the movies from the camera, launch the application Image Capture. Choose "Download Some" and you can see the contents of your camera. Select the movie files and upload them to a folder on your Desktop. It may take a while, so be patient and ignore the useless blue progress bar. When the movies are fully uploaded to your Desktop, you can import them into your iPhoto library with the File > Import to Library command.

IPhoto picture resolution issue

Hi,
I've sync'd several iPhoto libraries (I have multiples) but am seeing many of the photos display in what looks like blown up thumbnails rather than full resolution photos. These are full 10mp images at 3600x2700 in iPhoto. The problem is that it's inconsistent. Some photos look great and some don't.
What could account for the difference?

There are several issues at work here. Which all seem to stem from this being an ipod with better video than a settop mac.
First the apple TV displays a max resolution of 720p (not 1080) for videos and photos alike.
Second when the photos are synced their resolution is reduced to have a max of 720 pixels vertical resolution - I'm not sure but there is an apple photo database in the pictures folder that looks like it contain these versions of the pictures.
The photos are then displayed by the apple TV and if you set it to 1080 it blows up the smaller images to fit the screen. From what I've seen any portrait pictures look OK (because they aren't blown up) but landscape photos look like crap. this may not be as noticeable if you use ken burns effect because it doesn't appear to blow up the picture when it uses this.
We purchased this primarily to show our photos in hi res on our 1080p tv, its a big disappointment and will be going back. Get a mac mini instead!

IPhoto 09 Importing issue

I am running iPhoto 09. I scanned a picture and saved it as a .jpg I go to import into iPhoto and it says unrecognizable format?? How come it recognizes other .jpg I import?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Where did you save it? Is it a color photo? Have you successfully scanned and imported other jpgs before?
You can try opening it with Preview and do a Save As, selected jpeg, max quality and a new file name and then see if that new file can be imported.

IPhoto library import issue - answer can't be found anywhere else

Hi, just downloaded the trial of Aperture. I am attempting to import my iPhoto library and regardless of whether the location is maintained as references to the iPhoto library or set to the Aperture library when I click import nothing actually imports.
I have checked the iPhoto settings and all seems to be set correctly and also the online seminars and discussions but still no answer. Would it be because I am using the trial version?

Do a little test to make sure you've got your iPhoto library correct. In Aperture go to File>Import>Images. With the {X} set pm Local Files, navigate to the iPhoto library you are using. Then you should see a list of all of your Albums, and if you click on Library, you will see your Events. You can import a few (I would suggest just setting "Store Files" to "In their current location" to avoid duplication) Folders or Events and then see if they appear in Aperture. This is in fact how I store my 40K image library. I keep it all in iPhoto and reference just the albums I need to work on from Aperture.

Iphoto picture view issues

I have loaded my pictures into my Library, but when I open the Library, all the pictures have the same view (picture) on them. I cannot see each picture individually. I can click on the picture and see the actual, but not in the library or photo view. When I first loaded the pictures it seemed as if some were shown correctly.
How can you change the view so to see each picture indiviually?

try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your thumbnails - this may take several tries

Image problems when importing modified Iphoto pictures to aperture 3

I seem to have a bit of strange problem with modified pictures after they are imported in A3.
I am using Iphoto 8.1.1 and have just bought Aperture 3. I decided to import all my iphoto pictures using the import iphoto library function.
I noticed that all images that had (in iphoto) been edited using the retouch function to reduce blemishes have problems in Aperture. The problem appears to be where the brush was used is now pixilated in that area and it just looks like a cluster of "noise". This only seems to happen when I used the import iphoto library. I tried to replicate the issue importing some of the same pictures individually and there was no issue. Than I made a new library tried to import iphoto library and same issue ones again. Exporting the picture out of aperture keeps this error. It's quite a worry as I have several hundred of these pictures and I am not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

ok quick update - I opened up the aperture library in finder and located the image. The master appears to be the correct image but in Aperture itself it's showing a different image. The picture in Aperture appears to be pointing to the preview directory within the library structure. I tried re building the review and thumb and same issue again. When I export from aperture it also seems to export the preview version as oppose to the master. How do i fix this issue

Import Issue - iPhoto Quits

I have searched here and online for this issue but can only find the apple color profile fix for certain pictures. I managed to kill my previous library so had to start fresh. When trying to import about 5000 photos, iphoto would get about 500 or so pictures in and then quit. When ever I would relaunch, there is always 130 pictures imported from various folders (no logical order), and 107 that were recovered. All of the images are untouched and not edited in any way. Any suggestions?

This could be a permissions problem, or a faulty jpeg file.
1. To solve a Permissions Issue: Download BatchMod from

And apply it to the iPhoto Library Folder using the settings found here:

2. If it's a faulty jpeg, then try importing the pics in groups of 100 at a time, and see if you can track down the one/s that are causing the problem.

IPhoto '06 - '08 Import Issues: Album Names Not Imported; Grouped by Date

I imagine my circumstances aren't uncommon... After a clean install of Leopard and iLife '08 on my MacBook, I wanted to import my iPhoto '06 library into iPhoto '08. I had archived on an external hard drive the iPhoto Pictures directory from iPhoto '06 (the directory from ~user/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Pictures/).
Using the File>Import to Library function in iPhoto '08 and selecting the iPhoto '06 library resulted in all of the pictures coming in, *but they weren't organized in the albums I created in iPhoto '06*. Instead, all pictures were organized into groups by date.
What in the ham sandwich is the proper way to import an iPhoto '06 library so that all of the old album names and organization is maintained in iPhoto '08?

Many thanks for the advice. I found one other thing that I wanted to ask about before giving this a whirl.
I noticed that the iPhoto Library in '08 is in fact a package, not a directory. Given that, there are two possible courses of action, and I wanted to know which was best.
1. Delete the iPhoto '08 "iPhoto Library" package and replace it with the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory.
2. Replace the contents of the '08 "iPhoto Library" package with the contents of the '06 "iPhoto Library" directory?
I was uncertain about option 1, as I didn't know how getting rid of the package would affect the application (or if it's needed).

How can i import my iphoto pictures on my older macbook pro 17 into my iphone. I can see my device icon on iphoto but no icloud capability nor can I select and drag my pics into my device (iphone 5).

when your phone is plugged in, on itunes you click your device. and on the device summary page, there are 4-5 tabs. one of the tabs is photos. you can choose the photos file you want to add to your phone there.

Why does get-attachment 1aspx appear on pictures imported from Iphoto

Pictures imported from Iphoto into Imovie not as clear as originals. There is a note with each picture ...get-attachment 1aspx. Could this be the reason? What does this message mean?

iPhoto shows you the image at full resolution. If the image is tiny then it's tiny.
You can magnify an image by 300%. In edit mode hold the option key and tap the 2 or 3 button.

Any value in exporting iPhoto pictures and importing them into Aperture?

I am moving from iPhoto into Aperture (moving my library again actually) and I know that iPhoto and Aperture can share the iPhoto library once it has been updated but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library? The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original. A couple of weeks ago I moved my iPhoto library onto an external LaCie SSD disk to use with my MacBook Pro but unfortunately corrupted that library and have to make the move again. If there is any value in changing how I'm managing my library I should do it now.
The library corruption was caused by me needing to leave for work and disconnecting the LaCie before Aperture was done sync'ing with my Flickr account. When I tried to use Aperture the next day it was not able to repair/rebuild or use the iPhoto library at all. I was unfortunately not backing up the external disk so I lost everything that I had done to clean up the library after the move. One lesson that I learned was do not automatically sync with Flickr because doing this on an MBP via wireless with an external disk library can add a lot of delay to shutting down Aperture after an MBP wakeup.

You can - an it will depend on what you want to achieve, if that will usefull. The way to do this would be by imprting your iPhoto library into an Aperture library using Aperture. But Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries are now interchangable - both are photo libraries, and you could simply use your iPhoto library in Aperture and be done now.
Some reasons why you would want to turn your iPhoto library into a library recognized as Aperture library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library:
As long as the photo library will have the "Kind: iPhoto library", you will have to upgrade both iPhoto and Aperture always to the newest versions, or you will not be able to upgrade to a new library format, when a new release of Aperture comes - say (iPhoto '12 and Aperture 4); you will probably have to buy both new releases to continue working with your iPhoto Library in Aperture.
If the kind of your library is "Kind: iPhoto library", it will appear in the Media Browser in the iPhoto section, not in the Aperture section, even if you are using it as your Aperture library. And before syncing with iTunes you will always have to open the Aperture library in iPhoto to point iTunes to it.
Also, in Aperture you have more control about what will be included in your library - In iPhoto there is no way to specify the size and quality of previews. If you do not want or need previews, or you want smaller previews, or no Faces, it would make sense to recreate your iPhoto library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library.
If you have more than one iPhoto Library, you can merge them into one big Aperture library to be able to browse all your images without having to switch between libraries. Aperture works very well with really big libraries. There is no need to split libraries.
The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.
That is what I meant by having more control on what will be stored. iPhoto will always store a very high quality preview of your edited version; in Aperture you can decide what the preview size and quality will be. But Previews and originals are not duplicates; they are not the same image.
