Iphoto pictures turn fuzzy

I have my photos in iphoto and usually take them to imovie and make movie clips of them when I get enough. They look great in iPhoto and then when they show up in iMovie they are fuzzy and distorted any ideas? This is the first time I have tried this with iPhoto 6 and iMovie. I have the latest updates.

gkcraig:
That's because in iPhoto the files are rendered with square pixels like the monitor. iMovie renders them in a rectangular pixel that's designed for TV sets. It's the nature of the beast.
Do you Twango?

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

When you watch on your Mac, it is at or near HD 1920x1080 pixels (about 2 megapixels), depending on the resolution of your screen. Most photos today are 5 megapixels or greater, depending on your camera, but anything over 2 megapixels must be reduced when put in a video.
When you create a DVD, you must further reduce it to 640x480, standard definition. This is about 0.3 megapixels. iDVD will do this for you.
You can fix by creating an HD movie in iMovie. You can Share this using Share/Export Using QuickTime to an MP4 container using the h.264 codec. You can then put this movie on your PS3 using a USB thumb drive.
That should give you good resolution.
(NEVER MIND, YOU SAID PS2 not PS3, my apologies)

  • IPhoto destructively turned all pictures with faces into thumbnails

I just noticed a gigantic problem with my iPhoto library. Images taken with multiple 5MP+ cameras all were destructively converted in the iPhoto library. The pattern I detected is that every photo with a face detected in it by iPhoto had its original picture turned into a 0.3MP thumbnail and the original sized picture is lost. Even if I go into ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/Masters have been reduced in size. Of all my pictures in the last ~10 years that I used iPhoto to solely manage, none that has a face in it has been spared.
What is going on? Why would Apple ever want to destructively modify original imports?

No - it has nothin to do with Aperture and iPhtoo sharing the same library
the next thing to do is
Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
It is very likely that you did not do this but that you imported the old liberary - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - but even if you did it correctly something went wrong and you need to redo it

  • When using iPhoto edit, pictures are fuzzy

When I download photos from my SD card they are downloaded clear, then I hit edit in iphoto and pictures are fuzzy. In Apeture and Preview they are clear.

You should be able to click and drag/drop the albums into the order you wish.

  • Entire iPhoto pictures missing from external hard drive.

Hello, I have already posted this problem but I'm not sure it was clear enough and not getting the response I needed. I had a Jan 2011 white laptop came with snow leopard, and I upgraded to Lion. A good few months ago, my daughter splashed a small amount of water on it, whilst it was turned on and open. I dried off the water I could see, and the mac was still working so I assumed it was ok. (At this time it had a very low battery and was not connected to a power source) Later on in the afternoon, forgetting about the incident, I did the unthinkable and plugged in the power lead. Result: nothing, the laptop would not boot up, I tried a few times, even holding down the power key for extended time but nothing. I eventually gave up  and got myself a new macbook 10.9.2 then two days ago, took the old burnt out laptop to a place to get them to remove the hard drive and fit it in a case for me with a usb connection. They done this, I  got home and connected the external hard drive off my old mac into my new mac, success I could see it but when I tried launching I photo from the external HD (old lap top) on my new mac. (I didn't realise there would be a software issue which is obvious now)The new mac with mavericks said it could not open iphoto. So I tried searching for the photo files manually on my external hard drive (but there was nothing)  The user files were completely empty. It showed hardly any bytes (indicating I had nothing) My itunes files where gone too, and I could find no files I needed that were originally on my old (mac/ now external harddrive) The only items that were intact were the documents in the documents folder and the applications. I took the external hd back to the repair shop and they said they could not find them. They said they would charge me £100 for an attempted recovery  of data which I 'm now not sure what to do, as I'm unsure what has happened. I desperately would like to get some of the data back, i;e (some files from desktop and photos)  as frustratingly  it was not backed up....
    My questions are:
1.Would trying to open iphoto, and itunes from my  external HD with earlier software in  10.9.2 Mavericks cause me to lose data (including desktop files) ?
    2. Could the water damage be the issue for destroying the data? (although other data is still there)
    3. Is it likely the files are still on my external hd and I just can't see them (although the low bytes seems to indicate perhaps not)
    4. Is there a reliable data recovery program out there someone can recommend I can get and use that may recover the files, and do I download it on my new mac, and direct it to the external hd?
    5. Would apeture locate the missing iphoto picture files  from the external HD and integrate it into the library on my mavericks?
    6. Could the problem be caused by leaving the HD in my old(water damaged) laptop for so long before I tried rescuing it?
Any light on situation much appreciated. Apologies if this issue already been aswered, I did scour but did not see help I needed.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi  T,
Thanks again for reply.  Just checked my mac for the first time without the external HD attached. I had a hard time trying to get back into this site on my new mac. Now I keep getting a pop up that says (https:// discussions.apple.com bad gateway) with ok button every every 30 secs or or something after that I can't type except if I click ok. Prior to that I had some message telling me something about proxy server gateway no access or something. Not happenign on other sites so perhaps just a random error, (hope I have now not picked up a bug or another insidious thing from some site whilst trying to resolve my old HD probs....)
    Extremely annoying!!
Well I checked as you asked. This is the process.(if you can tell me how to take a screen shot I will do it, but at moment I don't know how to do that exactly)
At the moment I have got my HD showing on my desk top Top RH corner, like they used to in the good old days before it all changed. I do this, because everything is conveniently placed in one place. Call me old fashioned I guess..
(Not to change the thread but this pop up thing is driving me mad...)
If I doubleclick on that by default it opens with five folders in it, I;E applications, library, system, user information, users.
    When I click on Users.
It is here I find the user  file  with a user name that I have NEVER entered into this new mac, (especially with old MAC HD attached as I did not want any confusion) I even re-named my  old HD (OLD mac HD)
This new user file even has the icon of  a HOUSE instead of a folder, which is something off older OS as far as I know, I never saw it in mavericks before attaching this encased contraption which is just a metal box as far as I see that holds my old HD, but annoyingly done by someone that may not have known what they were doing..
Why the heck is it there? It should not be there!
When I click on this old (home folder) as that is what it used to be, and that was the name of my OLD HD before it got the name (old mac HD) which now I think of it, was not changed by me by default... which is a thought.. I only added the word OLD to it..
Well it has all my default folders such as desk top, docs, movies, pictures ect.. When I click on pictures I  have my new iphoto library and another folder called root which has the salvaged files I saved there from the recovery software Stellar Pheonix which I downloaded a couple of days ago but can't actually open with preview anyway. I tried to do it with an old version of CS 5 photoshop to see if that would work, but I could not get photoshop to open in mavericks even after java update)
The interesting thing is is: if I go to system preferences in my dock I click on users it only has the user folders I specified that should be there on my new mac.
now peeved.  and this annoying pop up.....Situ does not seem to be getting any better!
Instructions please how to post screenshot..
    PS sorry about LONG POST

  • Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.

  • Some iphoto pictures not usable as desktop background

I want to set my desktop background as a slideshow of my favourite iPhoto'08 pictures. While experimenting, I've discovered that some of my iPhoto pictures don't seem to work as a desktop background.
Here's what I do (and note that I'm translating from a Swedish version of OSX here):
Right-click on the desktop, choose 'Change desktop background'. In the 'Desktop and Screensaver' dialog, Desktop tab, scroll down the left-hand side list of iPhoto albums (among other things), and select my favourite iPhoto album (Flagged). Wait for the previews to load. Select one of the pictures.
Now, what happens can be one of two things. Either I'll see a slightly bigger preview in the left upper corner of the dialog and I'll see the desktop background change to the picture in question. Or I'll only see the slightly bigger preview in the left upper corner, and the desktop background will turn a boring solid color.
Now, iPhoto itself has no problems with these pictures, and shows them properly. Also, if I use the little + below the left-hand side list to add a folder on the harddrive directly to the list, I can get the broken pictures to show up correctly, as long as I don't go through iPhoto.
So, yeah, that gives me a potential workaround: Export my favourite album now and then, and use the exported folder as background slideshow source. I'd rather have a better solution, where things just work like they're supposed to.
The pattern I've noticed is that iPhoto-modified pictures work fine, non-iPhoto-modified pictures don't seem to work. (That is, if right-clicking on a preview in iPhoto has the menu item 'Show original file' active, the picture will work, if the item is greyed out, the picture won't work.)
A relevant detail in this may be that I've set iPhoto to not copy imported pictures into the library.
    Any hints, clues? Now what?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I think this relates to using a Referenced Library:
iPhoto-modified pictures work fine, non-iPhoto-modified pictures don't seem to work.
In other words, iPhoto will share the files it controls (the modifieds are inside the Library Package) and not the ones that it wont.
Simple test: Create a Managed Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library', import a few pics and see if that works as expected.

  • Any value in exporting iPhoto pictures and importing them into Aperture?

I am moving from iPhoto into Aperture (moving my library again actually) and I know that iPhoto and Aperture can share the iPhoto library once it has been updated but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library?  The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.  A couple of weeks ago I moved my iPhoto library onto an external LaCie SSD disk to use with my MacBook Pro but unfortunately corrupted that library and have to make the move again.  If there is any value in changing how I'm managing my library I should do it now.
The library corruption was caused by me needing to leave for work and disconnecting the LaCie before Aperture was done sync'ing with my Flickr account.  When I tried to use Aperture the next day it was not able to repair/rebuild or use the iPhoto library at all.  I was unfortunately not backing up the external disk so I lost everything that I had done to clean up the library after the move.  One lesson that I learned was do not automatically sync with Flickr because doing this on an MBP via wireless with an external disk library can add a lot of delay to shutting down Aperture after an MBP wakeup.

Just in case you have not come across these:
Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
but I am wondering if there is any value (or even if it is possible) to export all of the iPhoto pictures and import them into a new Aperture library?
You can - an it will depend on what you want to achieve, if that will usefull. The way to do this would be by imprting your iPhoto library into an Aperture library using Aperture. But Aperture libraries and iPhoto libraries are now interchangable - both are photo libraries, and you could simply use your iPhoto library in Aperture and be done now.
Some reasons why you would want to turn your iPhoto library into a library recognized as Aperture library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library:
As long as the photo library will have the "Kind: iPhoto library", you will have to upgrade both iPhoto and Aperture always to the newest versions, or you will not be able to upgrade to a new library format, when a new release of Aperture comes - say (iPhoto '12 and Aperture 4); you will probably have to buy both new releases to continue working with your iPhoto Library in Aperture.
If the kind of your library is "Kind: iPhoto library", it will appear in the Media Browser in the iPhoto section, not in the Aperture section, even if you are using it as your Aperture library. And before syncing with iTunes you will always have to open the Aperture library in iPhoto to point iTunes to it.
Also, in Aperture you have more control about what will be included in your library - In iPhoto there is no way to specify the size and quality of previews. If you do not want or need previews, or you want smaller previews, or no Faces, it would make sense to recreate your iPhoto library by importing it into a new, empty Aperture Library.
If you have more than one iPhoto Library, you can merge them into one big Aperture library to be able to browse all your images without having to switch between libraries. Aperture works very well with really big libraries. There is no need to split libraries.
The reason that I'm asking this is that I know there are a lot of duplicates in my iPhoto library and I know that Aperture keeps only the original.
That is what I meant by having more control on what will be stored. iPhoto will always store a very high quality preview of your edited version; in Aperture you can decide what the preview size and quality will be. But Previews and originals are not duplicates; they are not the same image.

  • Moving iPhoto pictures to guest account's iPhoto Library.

Hi, i use a 2006 mac mini, and I was wondering how can I move or Draft all of my iphoto pictures onto my 2nd account's iPhoto library on my mac mini? Because i have a "guest" account so to speak, and was just wondering if there's anyway i can do it. Thanks.

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Suddenly, when I attempt to edit a RAW photo in iPhoto it turns a dark shade of green and won't allow me to adjust exposure.

I have an iMac with a 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and running OS X version 10.9.5. I have iPhoto 9.5.1.
Suddenly, when I attempt to edit a RAW photo in iPhoto, it turns a green shade and won't let me adjust exposure. I can view the pictures in the events page just fine. However, I'm noticing that when the RAW pictures turn that green shade they tend to stay green regardless of when I'm in edit mode or not. Please help.

Did you install RAW update 5.07 recently? Mine was installed 9/18 - look under updates in the App store.
As to TM I suggest you not mess with its backups - it manages them and makes space as required - it builds a complex set of data so it can restore any file at any time for as long as possible - if you mess with its data you may cause problems for future restores - see Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
If your backup drive fills up
As your backup drive begins to fill up to its capacity, Time Machine intelligently deletes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones. It also alerts you if the "Notify after old backups are deleted" option is selected in Time Machine preferences.

  • Retrieving iPhoto pictures from external hard drive

Yesterday, I was finally successful in finding and retrieving E-mail files from my external hard drive. This long-awaited success made me optimistic that I would be able to do the same with missing photos from my iPhoto library. That turned out to overly optimistic, and I failed completely. Anyway, I think I found an important clue for my failure, and I'm hoping that someone here will be able to unravel that clue.
I have been unable to copy the screen where I find my iPhoto files, but I think the important thing is that many of them open up into a picture of a flower, which is probably a representation of a photo album. However, there is more to it than that. The last such picture I found showed--I think--that it contained 3.12 GB. If I'm right, these "photo albums" contain all of my missing iPhoto pictures. The problem is how to open up these "photo albums". Can anyone help?
One last thing: these iPhoto pictures were added to my computer over a period of years, so several different operating systems were involved. I remember Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion, but I've had some kind of Mac for at least ten years, so there were probably several others. Also, of course, several versions of iPhoto. I only mention this because I can remember notices on the screen to the effect that "this file cannot be opened because it was created in another operating system," or something to that effect.

I can't take a picture of the screen showing the iPhoto files, but here is what's there:
    iPhoto Library
    iPhoto Library (original 2)
iPhoto Library (Original 2) Recovered Photos
iPhoto Library (Original 2) Recovered photo 2
    iPhoto Library (Original 3)
    iPhoto Library (Original)
    iPhoto Library (rebuilt).photolibrary
    iPhoto Slide shows
When I click on them, I get different results. Sometimes photos, but also the following messages:
    (1) iPhoto is unable to open this library. The library has issues that require rebuilding to correct.
    QUIT     REBUILD
    (2) The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your iPhoto library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
    QUIT   UPGRADE
    (3)
To get started with iPhoto, do any of the following:
Connect a camera or memory card
    Drag photos into iPhoto
    Chose file>"import to library"

  • Bug: Apple TV is Homesharing all iPhoto pictures

    Setup
    Mac OS X 10.8.5
    iTunes v11.1
    iPhoto '11 (v9.4.3)
Apple TV (Model MD199LL/A) has been updated to v6.0 software
Issue is that with iTunes Homesharing turned on and logged into on my Apple TV all my iPhoto pictures show up in Apple TV's "Computer App" even though in iPhoto I set sharing to only specific folders with the password protect.  Is there any way to show only specific iPhoto pictures or folders in Apple TV's "Computer App" instead of all?

I'm not able to repeat that myself, it's working as expected here. If you're sure your home sharing settings are only set to select specific content, then you might try re-applying the settings.

Hundreds of my iPhoto pictures will not be copied and will not show when I double-click on them.  When I do in iPhoto an exclamation surrounded by a triangle appears.  Though I can see the picture in the small tiles below it will not expand.  I also cannot attach any of these pics into an e-mail or into any other file.  I have already went through all 3 Repair options and when that did not solve it went through a complete Rebuild.  Any Help?!  Any Suggestions on how to fix this?!  I have spent almost 2 days now going through all of the published help.
I have backups going back 6 months - I have not had the real need to check every album before - but - all of my backups also have this same problem.

The triangle with the ! indicates that the connection between the thumbnail and the orginal is missing - this can be caused by many things including database corruption and user action emoving the originals photos on urpose or by accident
If the database is corrupted then rebuilding is the solution - backup and depress the option and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your database  --  if the iPhoto rebuild does not cure the problem then download iPhoto Library manager and use its rebuild command which creates a totally new library leaving the existing one untouched
If you have deleted the photos then you need to start over with a new library and import the photos you have not deleted into it
You can select one of the problem photos and use the reveal original in finder commander (file menu) to see if the original is there - if it is a finder window will open showing it
