IPhoto post-restoration?

Hi,
I've had to replace my hard drive recently and I tried to restore my whole mac from a time capsule back-up. It worked quite well, except for the fact that a lot of my installed apps are gone and others have been replaced on my dock with question marks.
Some, like iMovie are okay and safely tucked away in the applications folder- when opened all of my movie projects open up like they were before the crash. However, when I tried to open up iPhoto in the same way the window "WHICH PHOTO LIBRARY DO YOU WANT IPHOTO TO USE?" popped up. This would not be a problem if my previous library was listed and selectable below. It's not.
I've been scouring the web for a solution for over an hour and I can't seem to find anything. I can't seem to locate the iphoto library in finder or anything.
How would you advise me to proceed? I could "create a new library" but I have a sneaky suspicion that all of my photos wouldn't be there.
If you have any suggestions for how I could recover my photos I would really appreciate them.

Well if you have no iPhoto library then a partial one is better than nothing - and while this is not the place to get detailed Time Machine advice - this is the iPhoto for Mac forum - no turning TM off does not erase anything
Download "find any file" and search for library6.iPhoto on youyr had drive - that is a file in every Photo library ad if you find it you would have an iPhoto library with photos to start with

    Hi All,

If you transfer the logins using sp_help_revlogin (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/918992) or the SSIS Transfer Logins Task, the logins will be created with the SID and password hash intact and you won't have any orphaned user issues after restoring the
database, even to a different server, or a higher version.  If you are upgrading versions then post restore steps depends on what version the database started at and what version you are upgrading to.  From SQL Server 2000, you need to update statistics
and you also need to run DBCC CHECKDB WITH DATA_PURITY so that it can set the internal bit that the data in the tables has been validated to have proper values within the ranges of the datatypes specified.  This wasn't something done in SQL Server 2000
previously.  Going from 2005 to higher versions, the stats blobs should be updated to cover any changes that might have been made, but as I recall the important changes were made in the 2005 version that affected performance the most with the older stats
blobs.  Other than that, consider other things that aren't contained in the database:
Replication - requires the KEEP_REPLICATION option on RESTORE
CDC - requires the KEEP_CDC option on RESTORE
    SQL Agent Jobs
SSIS Packages (or DTS if 2000)
Server Logins should be scripted or transfered with a SSIS task as explained above

  • Pre-Mavericks to Post-Mavericks iPhoto backup Restoring Issues

A few months ago, I wiped my hard drive on my 2009 Macbook and installed Mavericks.  Now I cannot restore my iPhoto library from the pre-mavericks time machine backup.  Is there a workaround or have i just lost several years of photos?

Why can't you restore the old backup? (remember we only know what you tell us - we can not see you or your computer)
Basically you need to install iPhoto '11 version 9.5.x and restore the iPhoto library and then convert it to the new iPhoto format - if the old library is from iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) or earlier you must first download and run the iPhoto library upgraded and then launch iPhoto to finish the conversion - if the old library is from iPhoto '09 or '11 simply put it in the pictures folder an launch iphoto

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • IPhoto 6 & Restoring from .mac Backup

Thankyou to all of the experienced mac users who post to these forums, most helpful to people relatively new to mac's.
I have been happily using iPhoto 6.0.1 and the .mac backup utility weekly. last night I needed to reinstall Tiger, then iPhoto - which went fine. I used the .mac Backup software to restore all iPhoto files to the original locations - which also went fine. I can see the 'Pictures" folder contains all the iPhoto photos and data.
However when I load iPhoto I have no photos in my library. I have tried the Apple + Alt keys whilst loading iPhoto and have selected all the options, but nothing seems move.
    Q. - Could someone give me advice as to how to tell iPhoto to display the photos which are in the Data folder ?
Thanks in advance - Paul P
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Paul,
Is the library in the Pictures folder named "iPhoto Library"?
When you reinstalled tiger, did you use the same username and short user name?
Have you tried launching iPhoto with the Option key held down until you get a message window? In this window you can choose another library to open. You want to choose your library in the Pictures folder. It might even be already chosen in the navigate window so look at the screenshots to help you out.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer, highlight it, then click the "open" button.

  • Cant find iphoto after restoring my Macbook Pro!

i restored my entire macbook due to unexplainable "other" files weighing it down. Now I can't find iphoto. where do i download this and how come it didnt restore on its own? I looked on the app store and itunes but couldnt find it. Please advise.

where do i download this and how come it didnt restore on its own?
IPhoto is not part of MacOS X.
Reinstall iPhoto, like you originally installed it. Which MacOS X version do you have, and how did you originally install iPhoto?
The problem is, that iPhoto is no longer sold at the AppStore.   If your iPhoto version came preinstalled with MacOS X 10.7 or later, look at the Purchases tab of the AppStore and reinstall from there.
For earlier versions reinstall from the disk, that came with your Mac. But these earlier versions will not run on Yosemite. Which version do you have now?

  • IPhoto Library restore from Time Machine = zero k

I mistakenly deleted my iPhoto library a week or so ago. When I go through Time Machine to restore, I can find the file no problem (48.83 GB). When I click to restore, the resulting file is zero K.
    Steps taken:
    1) Click on Time Machine icon in dock
    2) Navigate to drive/folder/..
    3) Go back to a date where I can see drive/folder/folder/Pictures/iPhoto Library
    4) Click restore
    5) Resulting file is zero k
Time Machine has to re-create some of the folders above it in the restoration process too. I don't know if the difference in folder structure is part of the problem or not.
I have years and years of family pics in this Library and really need some help here. I'm about out of backup retrieval dates and I'm starting to get a little freaked out.

    $30 later, "Back-In-Time" saved the day. http://www.tri-edre.com

  • Iphoto post processing speed

When I individually edit photos in iPhoto and add the noise reduction, after a few pictures it takes 15-30 seconds for the next photo to display. Therefore when I am working on a few hundred sports photos, it adds a lot of time to post processing. It is really only a problem when I use the noise reduction.
Any suggestions on how I can speed up the process. Thanks.

Just to add some detail, on my iMac 800 I printed two pages of 9-up and it took between 3-4 minutes to process and even longer to print. The printer would have to stop and process data after printing every line or two at most. The two pages took over 10 minutes to print on the printers normal plain paper setting. As a comparison I can print the same photos laid out the same way from InDesign in a minute or two.
I noticed this problem existed since the early versions of iPhoto. I just can't figure out why iPhoto causes my systems to choke so badly when printing.

  • I would like to recover photos that are in Trash in IPhoto and restore them to either specific albums or the general photo list

I have inadvertently deleted over 600 photos to trash.
I would like to restore them either to the general photo list or move them to albums.
The deleted photos and videos all are intact but I don't know how to transfer them to a folder where I can use them.
I appreciate any help you can provide.

iPHoto Trash?  open the iPhoto trash, select the photos your want to restore, right click and "Put Back"
System trash? open the system trash and drag to a desktop folder - then import into iPhoto - once they are out of iPhoto and in the system trash there is no way to put them back into events and albums - you have to start over with them

  • IPhoto update & restoring files

Hi, I have update my iPhoto because Aperture would not link with the older version. I managed to lose a lot of photos and have now restored iPhoto library from my Time Machine. Now my Mac is asking me to upgrade to newer version of iPhoto again!! Do I have to buy the new version again?!
    Thanks!

I managed to lose a lot of photos and have now restored iPhoto library from my Time Machine. Now my Mac is asking me to upgrade to newer version of iPhoto again!! Do I have to buy the new version again?!
No, that is probably a misunderstanding. If you restored a previous version of your iPhoto library from Time Machine, you need to update the iPhoto Library to the new version of iPhoto that you now are having.
Doube-click the restored iPhoto Library to open it in iPhoto. iPhoto should be warning you, that the library needs upgrading. Confirm this. Then let it ugrade the library. Does that work?
Which versions of iPhoto and Aperture do you have?

  • IPhoto '09 Restore from Time Machine... pictures missing, can you help?

I decided to restore an older iPhoto Library (from 2 days ago), and my most recent imports (span of time of a month) have disappeared. The events show up in the Library, but when I click on it, only gray boxes appear... no photos.
Does anyone have a solution to get the photos back? I thought that this was the purpose of having the Time Machine... to be able to restore old files and (in this case) libraries.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Unable to authorize Apps post restore of iPhone 3g (software version 2.2.1)

    A little story...!
I bought a new iPhone 3g last week. I love playing with hardware ans software so I downloaded the SDK, and installed it.
I spent a happy evening writing a silly little app, which worked on the simulator. I wanted to test it for real, so connected my iPhone.
XCode asked if I wanted to use it for development, I said yes (all going well so far)
I tried to deploy to it, but it failed with an application authentication issue (totally separate). As it was late in the evening, I just shrugged and disconnected my iPhone.
This morning I tried to use an application I had downloaded from the app store. It started then crashed. hmmm.
I read a bunch of stuff on the net, and decided to restore the iPhone back to basic, then re-install everything.
All was going well until it tried to restore the applications, then I received 'you are not authorized' messages for every app.
More net reading. I finally found the answer which was a blend of two posts on this forum - hence this post which may help others.
    First the error:
You try to restore your iPhone but it fails with a message 'you are not authorized' to install the app.
    Now the solution
    1) Disconnect the iPhone
    2) In iTunes -> Store -> authorize computer
    3) Put in your name and password (even if this is all working already)
    4) It tells you that the computer is already authorized.
    5) Reconnect the iPhone and the apps will now synchronize.
I don't know why this works, but it does give me some more ideas about how apple authenticates things. Very much 'call the mother ship' if anything strange happens.
    Ho-hum - fixed now.
I hope this helps anyone with the same problems...

This has been a week from heck. Two computer died, cause unknown, then I could not re-install my apps.
I tried your advice. At this moment you are a god.
    Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Iphoto library restoring

    Dear all,
Recently I bought an iMac and I used migration assistant to migrate all files that I had saved from my old macbook pro on  my external hard disk.
Everything went ok for iphoto. In the past I used to make backups of my macbook pro using timemachine.
I tried to restore my iPhoto library via timemachine, but the file comes as a package file and looks like a document.
I cannot open it in iPhoto. I tried the alt option key and so forth, but iphoto does not open this file and asks me for upgrading iphoto, while I am using OS X 10.8.4 on m iMac.
When I click on the 'iphotolibrary' package file, I can see that my pictures are inside.
    Could anyone help me?
    Thanks already!

Sounds like either the back up is faulty or the restroign process didn't work.
Do you still have the old MBP? MIgration assistant doesnot have a great record with iPhoto Libraries so you could try migrate that library again manually:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

    Hello Anthony,
    Please review the SAP note::
457425    Homogenous liveCache copy using backup/restore
you got the following error in the knldiag::
2007-08-02 17:11:01 115 ERR 20029 Log DBIdentifier of DataVolume (glpscm:
KLP_20060920_111005) and LogVolume (gaqscm:GLQ_20060530_124209) does not match
The reason is, that your data backup is not compatible to the actuall log on your target system. So you have to perform the explained instance install procedure or go with 'Recovery After Initializing a Database Instance' in DBMGUI to clear the log there.
This is called the 'db_activate' what initializes the old used volumes.
-> What version of the DBMGUI do you have?
And if you carry out a restart before the restore, the error
'-8003: log and data must be compatible' will occur after the restore.
The error means that there is a mismatch between the DBindentifier of the log and datavolume, as you know.
As you saw in the note 457425, which explains the procedure for a homogenous liveCache copy:
"In Version 7.4, a normal recovery is NOT sufficient to import a backup from another system. You must install a liveCache database instance beforehand. You MUST begin at point 1 if you are using this version."
You could create a liveCache (with the option 'restore') and then restore the backup of the source liveCache before the restart, for exmple. The detailed procedure is given in note 457425.
Or if you used the DBMGUI, please go with 'Recovery After Initializing a
Database Instance', you will find a description for using the wizards in the MAXDB documentation:
You could review the documents at : http://maxdb.sap.com/currentdoc/default.htm
If you would like to use DBMGUI to create the instance for the recovery on the target server or use Restoring After Initializing a Database Instance,
    see the info at
Tools -> Database Manager GUI -> Creating a Database Instance ->Custom
    OR
"Restoring After Initializing a Database Instance" at
    http://maxdb.sap.com/currentdoc/30/5ada35596211d4aa83006094b92fad/content.htm
