Iphoto preferences for opening pictures
I want to use Preview to open photos, not iPhoto. I can't find a place in preferences on either iphoto or preview. Any ideas?
Select a Jepg in the Finder and go File -> Get Info
At the 'Open With..' section you can choose Preview.app and then click on the Change All button.

I hate iPhoto '11 for emailing pictures
Is there any way I can disable the email portion of iPhoto '11? Since I come from a blended family, I often send multiple sets of the same family pictures out using Mac mail. In the "old days" (before iPhoto '11) I could send a batch of pictures, find the message in my Sent mail, and reforward it to new people with a slightly changed message.
I did research to find out where the heck my Sent message "lives", but I just realized another flaw with this new way of emailing: my messages won't auto-fill the "to" address in iPhoto so I basically have to retype every email address I use again one time, before it starts recognizing it.
Huge flaw IMO! Hugely, I mean HUGELY inconvenient for someone like me who lives far from family and relies on email for sharing family events.
Any way to disable or workaround would be great. The only other thing I can think of is to start from Mail where I already have everything I need, then attach pictures and root around in my iPhoto library folders until I somehow find the ones I want.In the iPhoto preferences (the "General" panel) you can set the mailer "Email photos using": iPhoto or Mail.app. If you set it to Mail.app, you can share the photos from iPhoto and send a mail, but it will be sent using the standard Mail.app. And y carbon copy should appear in the "Sent" folder. Also you can use the Mail statonary for decorative cards.
But if you want to start from Mail, you can open iPhoto and drag the selected images to the Mail icon in the Dock. This will attach the photos to your mail, but let you select them using the iPhoto browser.

Although the preferences for using certain applications to open downloaded files is set and saved (it still appears when accessed), the preferences are either not utilized automatically (for most files) or remembered at all for others (docx files). So, each time I try to download/open a docx file, I have to "browse" and tell firefox to use microsoft word, even though the preference is already set. I see that some people are having trouble with preferences being deleted, but that is not that case here. Thanks!
Solved using STEP/OPTION 2 "resetpassword" in this post:
why do i keep loosing my settings and homepage setting in safari
I believe my problem started occurring after my system became unresponsive while the monitor was transitioning from Laptop display to external display. Safari locked up. I had to reboot the system. -
HT2481 Is iPhoto good for storing pictures,
where on the hard drive do they get stored?
Yes
By default (and very strongly recommended) in the iPhoto library in the pictures folder in your account - The location of teh iPhoto library can be anywhere as long as it is on a volume formated Mac OS extended (journaled)

Preferences for opening MS stuff with NeoOffice
I'm still getting used to OSX and my two-month-old MacBook. It's a struggle...
I am using NeoOffice instead of Microsoft. How do I set preferences somewhere so that, when I click on a Microsoft document, spreadsheet, or powerpoint, that it will open in NeoOffice?
(so much other stuff I can't figure out, but for now, this is the most pressing need)"find one Word Document (for example) right-click on it and choose 'Show Informations'."
Didn't see a "Show informations", but did see a "get info"
"In the lower half of the Informations Pane you find 'Open with' - choose Neooffice.app as default application and set the checkbox 'open all documents of this kind with that application."
There wasn't a checkbox, but there was a "change all" button.
So, indeed, the problem is solved! Thanks! -
How do I set a preference for opening one of multiple email accounts first?
I have multiple email accounts and prefer to open one of them first when I open the email app. After setup of all my email accounts the app is opening one of the accounts that is not my preference even though I setup my preferred account as the default. I've deleted all accounts and started over thinking that the order of the setup made a difference but it has not helped.
In particular I want an Exchange email account to open first and this account is not sync'ed with iTunes.
Would appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you,The only way that you can do something even close to what you are trying to do is to back out of whatever you are in while using the mail app in order to get back to the main mail window that shows all of your inboxes and all of the different email accounts under the accounts heading. Then you could choose to use the Exchange account first from there.
You would have to do this every single time that you are done with mail and it isn't exactly what you are looking to do and it's hardly worth the time anyway. -

I am using iPhoto '08 and moved my library to my external hard drive exactly as all the instructions online explained how to do. I renamed the original "iPhoto Library.old" and ,y external hard drive shows a iPhoto library using the same amount of memory as what it shows on my internal hard drive. Here is where is becomes a problem. When I hold the option key and open iPhoto, the only box that comes up does not give me a list of libraries to choose from. It give me the option to "Create new library" or "choose existing library". When I click "choose existing library" I can find the copied library on my external hard drive but when I open it, iPhoto shows No Photos. When I have tried opening the original iPhoto Library (the exact same way using the option key and choosing library) that I have not done anything to, except rename it, it does the exact same thing: No Photos. Both my internal and external hard drives show about 137 GB of space being taken up by photos but I can't access them. My other big problem is that ,y internal hard drive is completely full, which is why I am trying to transfer them to an external, to free up space so I am very limited on what I can do because I have no free space. Also, when I open iPhoto and try to go to the Preferences to change to path under advanced settings, it freezes and I have to force close it.
Ay advice would be greatly appreciated as I am getting stressed out that I can't open my thousands of photos! My guess is that the library has been corrupted from being run on an overfull HD.
So, try rebuild the Library on the External
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
Opening pictures in iPhoto from other programs
I'm wanting to use pictures from my iPhoto library in other programs-- i.e. Photoshop Elements or to upload to a website. When working from Photoshop Elements, when I go to File>Open>Pictures>iPhotoLibrary I get an error message. The only way I seem to be able to USE any of my photos stored in iPhoto is if I copy them to my "pictures" folder in the Finder and then use them. Of course, this means I am using double the space on my hard drive. There must be an easier way. What am I doing wrong?
So if I use Photoshop as an external editor, the Save function is only saving a copy? Does the copy go back into the original event this way?
When you set Photoshop (or an Image Editor) as an external and then go to edit the pic here's what happens:
1. iPhoto makes a copy of the file and sends the copy to Photoshop
2. Make your edits
3. Save.
4. The Edited version is returned to iPhoto and saved in the Modified Folder.
5. A new thumbnail is made and replaces the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window
Thereafter if you want to get to the Original you have several options:
a: Photos -> Revert to Original - this destroys the modified version
b: Export using the File -> Export command, set the *Kind: Original*
c. Any other form of export yields the edited version.
In Windows if one chooses save when editing in Photoshop, the original is overwritten,
This is true in Photoshop on the Mac too, the difference is you're using iPhoto, and it's +iPhoto making the copy+. Hence the 'Save As' to preserve your original is unnecessary.
which i can't seem to access in Finder browse mode or from iPhoto
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

Why can't I open picture I see in iPhoto 8?
I imported from a CD (slides I had transferred to a CD) to iPhoto8, but when I click on the photo get an error message that "The volume cannot be found." This seems to be happening on all that I imported. What does that mean? If it helps any, I do keep my iPhoto Library on an External Drive because it was getting too large for my computer.
Thanks
JillJill:
What you will need to do is check that box so iPhoto will copy the photos into the library when it imports. Next, select the thumbnails that give you the message and delete them from the library. Now reimport them from the CDs. You should also check the other photos in the library to see if they will open when double clicked. Evidently the preference for importing got changed somehow and the library, at least for the imports from the CD, was operating in the "referenced" mode.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
Not able to open pictures in iPhoto library in Photoshop Elements 4.0
Bit of a strange one ... I am unable to open pictures in Photoshop Elements 4.0 which have been imported using iPhoto '08. Pictures which have been received as, say, e-mail attachment and saved open without any trouble.
When I go to *file --> open* in Photoshop I do see the pictures under *Media --> Photos --> iPhoto --> photos* but when I try and open one of them nothing happens.
To complicate matters further, if I go to events and select one of the events the photos do open in Photoshop - but rather than just opening one photo the whole event is opened.
The version of Photoshop Elements I'm using is 4.0 and iPhoto version 7.1.3
Message was edited by: HSvUsing Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

Iphoto crashes on opening preferences?
Hi i wondered if anybody else has had the same problem as me with iphoto? Every time i bring up the preference pane iphoto just hangs and i have to force quit. Other than this it is very stable but obviously i need to be able to change the prefs'. I would be grateful if anyone can help.
Cheers SimonLog into another account, create a test library, import a couple of photo and then try to open the preferences. If you can them the issue lies in your account.
Go back to your account, create a test library, import a few photos and try the preferences again. If it works then the issue is with your library.
Post back with the results.

IPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture and otherwise won't open
After upgrade to Maverick, iPhoto asks for an upgrade of Aperture (which I don't have and never had), and otherwise won't open. If I click "ok", the Applications store opens and asks me to BUY Aperture (69,99 EUR).
There must be a bug in iPhoto 11 after the upgrade to Maverick..?I can only guess at a couple of solutions:
#1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion delete the contents the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If you're running Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Options menu to bring the this window:
where you can check the Show Library Folder checkbox.
#2
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed. -
I want to view individual jpg files uploaded to my mobileme account. The URL ends in .jpg. I can view the files as webpages in Safari, but with Firefox, my only choice is to download the file. I tried to change the preferences>applications>jpeg picture>to "use other" but the drop down menu goes right back to always ask. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, and restarted my computer. I have two other macs running 10.5.8, and this happens on both. When I type the same URL into my mac running 10.6.3, a dialog box appears that gives me the option of choosing which application to open the file with (in this case Firefox, so that I can view the file in a web page) rather than just downloading the file. The dialog box in the 10.5.8 doesn't give me the option of choosing an app, only "Save File" or "Cancel". I'm sorry if this is long-winded.

functionality (such as Path Finder, SNAX, etc.) If you already have some of these applications,
disable them first, and then install SPSS 13 for Mac OS X. Installation may not be completed
successfully if the name of any folder in the installation path exceeds 31 characters. This is due
to a limitation of Installer VISE.
Updating or Modifying Your Installation
To add a component, start the installation program from your CD-ROM. Select any new
components that you want to include. Make sure that every option you want to include is
selected including any previously installed components.
To add an SPSS option (Categories, Conjoint, Tables, and so on), start the SPSS 13 License
Renewal utility. If your license for SPSS Base or an SPSS option has expired you should run
this utility and enter the new license(s).
An installation log file is created in the ~/Library/Logs folder of the destination volume. You
may use the information in the log file to remove the installed copy of SPSS 13 for Mac OS X. -
