IPhoto prints are muddy

I printed the same picture, same size, same printer -- using my Macintosh (OS X 10.4.9); then using my PC. The mac print was dark and muddy and did not match the same picture on the mac monitor, which looked fine. The PC printed as in the past--color of print and monitor matched. I have seen some discussion about this problem but don't understand how to fix it or what the problem is--the printer is an HP PhotoSmart P1000.
Thanks for your help

Your first steps should be to go through the print services documentation to see what settings and formats they expect.
A call to their technical department explaining your situation would be useful also. It is very likely that they have encountered your problem in the past and have some ready suggestions to address it.
Once you know what settings and formats you need to be using in Aperture, if you have any questions post back.

  • Can I order iPhoto prints from Malta?

The options menu on iPhoto lets you select a print products store based on your shipping address.  Does this mean iPhoto prints are restricted to certain countries only, and will this feature be available in more countries in future?   Can I print copies from a UK store and then ship them to Malta?
    Thanks

These are the countries that have Print Product Stores:
You can try setting the store to the UK and order the book from there.  Often, however, the credit card used must has a billing address in the same country as the Print Product Store. But give it a try anyway.

  • Why are iPhoto prints now more expensive? (used to be $0.12, now $0.99)

I have ordered prints in the past--normal size (4x6, 5x7) and panoramic--inexpensively, but now the price is significantly higher. When I try to share it to print online this pricing show. I am running Yosemite and iPhoto was updated in the process of that update. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help or ideas...

Only the wallets (4 per print) are $0.99.  The other sizes are the same:

CrashPlanPROe, the enterprise version, is $60 per year per client, not $50 per month, so it may be worth looking into. It's what we run and it's been working very well for us, though you need a central server to run the software. That server can be Windows, Mac OS X, Linux or Solaris, any of which will work with any of the supported clients:

We tried Retrospect and had to return it for the limitation I mentioned above.

I'm new to Mac.  When iphoto's are printed, they are wavy/blurred.  How do I prepare for submitting to photo processor to prevent this?

Larry, thank you for your reply.  Actually, I haven't tried yet.  I'm asking because whenever I receive emailed photos or transferred photos from a Mac (via USB) to my PC, they are wavy or blurred.  Other PC users I talked with have the same problem.  One friend told me this can  be avoided thru a conversion process (I lost the instructions I was given).  I just converted to an iMac, so I am looking for that process.

  • Problem with my iPhoto prints

I need someone to treat me like a 4 year old...ha, ha. Please give me detailed instructions on how to fix my issue. I have tried to follow similar posts and I cannot figure it out. Here is my problem:
    1) I take pictures w/ my digital camera
    2) I import them into iPhoto
    3) I edit them to fix red eye, blemishes, etc..
    4) I crop them to 4x6
    5) I export them to a burn file and burn to CD
    6) I take the CD to Walmart and have prints made
    7) The on-screen images are sized how I want them, but the prints are not right. The prints do not match the on-screen images. Tops of heads get cut off. It is like it is printing them at 110%
    How do I fix this?

How are you exporting them? Are you using Format = JPEG? If you're using Format=Original then you're using the unedited file. Do you check their dimensions before burning to make sure they are in the 4x6 ratio or 1:1.5?

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • Non standard format images from the iPhoto print service

Can anyone tell me how to get the iPhoto print service to leave my images alone? They default to filling their 10 x 8 or 7 x 5 paper sizes. Nowhere on the order form do they tell you they're going to do this and I can't find anywhere to tell them not to.
They also supplied the prints in neat card wallets with "Do not bend" in nice red boxes printed on them. These were then dispatched in a plain white envelope with no such notices on it. Not surprisingly the prints arrived bent!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When you click on the Buy button the available print sizes that Apple provides are displayed and you have to fill in how many of each you want. There is no custom size available, at least here in the states. What size(s) did you select in the order window?
Didn't you get a similar window over there?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • IPhoto printing on Canon MP640

I'm having problems printing from iPhoto using WiFi. The printed photo in no way resembles the preview: sometimes the prints are cropped, sometimes borders appear on three sides etc. However, when I use the USB connection, the prints are fine. I'm using what I think are the latest drivers (CUPS 10.30.3.0) - any suggestions why the WiFi connection should behave differently and what I can do about it? I'd prefer not to reinstall the drivers, as it took several hours last time and I still don't know what I did to get it right!

The v10.30.3.0 driver is certainly the latest. Check that both the USB and the WiFi print queue are using the same driver version.
What you will notice is that all the selections made in the iPhoto print dialog don't stick when you then get to the next print dialog window. But you should still see a preview of the image at this print dialog and it should still look complete. If you don't see the image, ensure you click the triangle next to the printer name to see the print options.

  • IPhoto printing service not available in Australia?

Has anyone heard any news as to why the iPhoto printing service is not available in Australia? It's very disappointing as this was a great selling point to me, I just presumed that it may take time to set up, but still nothing...
I can still print calenders, cards & prints off my home printer of course, but it's not the same as professional printing. It seems a shame as the software costs the same for everyone, but we have features that we can't use.
Does anyone know why this is?
    Cheers!
    emac 1.42GHz PPP G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No comment on why Apple has not made this service available themselves in Australia, but there are a number of other options. For the ultimate in convenience and excellent quality, you can use digitaldavinci.com.au. They have an iPhoto plugin which will let you send books, cards and calendars to them. So this is pretty much the same as the Apple service anyway, although I think - but haven't checked myself - that the price is a bit higher.
Alternatively, I have had very good results sending a PDF of a book to myreflections.com.au. This is obviously not quite as convenient, but the quality is still very good and the price even better.
So there are definitely printing options available from iPhoto, especially for books, not so much for prints, and at least one option I know of for calendars and cards. I haven't used the calendar or card service though, just the book printing service from both DDV and MyReflections.
    Hope this helps.

  • Prints are much too dark

I have just received prints of several landscapes that looked great on screen. Prints are real disappointment as much too dark, although still really sharp and colours OK. Views are all JPEGs from iPhoto 5, converted using iPhoto from Canon RAW - have just transferred a couple to a PC and the PC image is much like the print - too dark. Have tried adjusting brightness on PowerBook screen to same as print, but print is darker! Anyone experienced this - and what is the fix?

  • Lightroom output prints are too light

I have to make 30-40 prints for a project and decided to try the Lightroom print module. The prints will be output from existing layered psd master files, most of which are in either a ProPhoto or Colormatch color space.
I imported a folder of master files into LR and opened one up in the print module. On the up side: I love the LR interface, the ease of going through the check list (seems easier and less confusing than the print box in photoshop), the ease of adding custom text (very handy for captions!), and I ESPECIALLY love checking the box to center the print and actually having it centered properly in the output print (unlike needing to monkey with the "left=" numbers or visually play with the location of the image on the page in the CS2 or CS3 print box). Its been a big pain for the last few years in CS2 to never quite have the darn thing centered when printing on my Epson 2200. I was thrilled that in LR the centering actually worked!
On the down side to printing in LR (and this is a BIG down): the prints are a good full stop lighter than the ones I print from CS2 or CS3. When printing from CS2 or CS3, with a profiled monitor and use of the proper printing profile, I get pretty close to WYSIWYG most of the time. I'm getting WYSIWYG in Lightroom (the output print DOES look like the monitor), but what I see in the print module window is a good full stop lighter than what my imported master files look like when opened and printed from photoshop. And the LR print comes out correspondingly lighter.
For final output printing of art or presentation prints, I generally will want to use a layered, polished, file that I have tinkered with in photoshop. LR still does not have enough features to do everything I need to create that kind of final print or delivery file.
So my question: why the mismatch between the appearance of a master file in CS2/CS3 and LR? Is there any way to correct this? I would love to use LR to output my prints, but as it is its not a good idea.
One last thing: I have been a big fan of PhotoKit Sharpener both for capture sharpening and for output sharpening. Is there a way to use it in a LR workflow? I'm particularly interested in using the output sharpener for prints, which is wonderful and has always done a great job.
Thanks for any feedback or insight.
Info background: I am using a dual 2GHz G5 PowerPC with 3.5 GB ram, running OS 10.4.10, using LR 1.1, as well as photoshop CS2 and CS3, printing with an Epson 2200.

    Jeff et al:
I did as you advised, and imported another folder of layered master files into LR. The first folder that I imported I had used the "none" development preset. On the second imported folder I used the "Zeroed" preset as per your suggestion.
The first ones were too light, but the second ones were a significantly better match. I have to say the image as viewed in the LR window is very close, although still not identical, to the image as viewed in Photoshop. For some reason the LR has a slightly more yellow cast, while the original in Photoshop is a bit more magenta. I made two prints from the same image, one via LR and the other via Photoshop, and you can see the same respective yellow or magenta cast in the prints. The LR print is also slightly muddier (but only marginally).
I read on another thread started by John Vitollo called "Anyway to turn off 'Apply Auto Tone Adjustments' with Tiffs + PSDs?" that John was also having problems with PSDs appearing too light in LR. Lee Jay told him to turn off the "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" in the Edit > Preferences > Presets (top box). I found that this option was enabled for all of the instances above, so my guess is that "Apply Auto Tone Adjustments" overrides "none" in the development module pull down menu during import... Don't know if this is something that needs to be fixed...?
In any case, given that I have successfully printed 10 images in Photoshop, for this particular project I will probably continue printing in PS so as to be able to match the tone and formatting. For future I will try to figure out printing in LR, but as of now I can't see any particular advantage to printing in the LR print module (except for the nice centering feature). When I imported and copied my layered master files into LR, it took a verrrrrry long time, and wasn't worth the time investment. Also am not sure what's causing this slight color shift, and don't want to invest in making a lot of prints till I can sort that out.
Any additional suggestions or comments are welcome.
    Many thanks,

  • Arrgggh!!!  iphoto print services...prints look awful

    Here is my workflow.
canon RAW -> lightroom -> export (sRGB) -> import into iPhoto (embed colorsync profile)
    lightroom 1.4.1, iphoto 7.1.5
If I print to my HP2600 from lightroom or iPhoto using colorsync the prints look great. But when I order from Apple Photo Services through iphoto, the prints are dark and washed out. I would like to order some calendars and books but not with the horrible quality of prints.
    How can I troubleshoot this?
    Thanks in advance.

Ditto here on wrong colors in items ordered from APPLE.
I just received a book I ordered and the color of all images aren't what I submitted. They're all darker and, in some cases, pinkish.
I checked them using APPLE preview proofing process, and the preview proof looked great... exactly what I had intended.
The images were old photos scanned in, and I did color corrections as well as cropping. Yet, I've done this in previous books and have had fabulous results.
Am interested to hear if anyone has any solutions because maybe I'm doing something with color corrections I shouldn't be doing?

  • IPhoto prints dark now?

When I print to my Canon Pixma after applying the latest patch, the prints are extremely dark from iPhoto. If I print from any other application the prints are perfect but iPhoto is printing all pictures almost black. I'm using 7.1.3. All my settings are generic - I have not changed anything.
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Airren:
Are you printing with Photoshop from within iPhoto? I mean are you printing the file that iPhoto generated upon importation and/or editing? How do you have Photoshop's color management preferences set up? Is PS doing the managing, i.e. applying a specific profile and using that like I have here?
I do all of my printing from within iPhoto with Photoshop. I've set iPhoto preferences to use Photoshop and then set it back to iPhoto. When I Control+click on the thumbnail I can select Edit in external editor and it takes me to PS. From there I print. We have so much more control over the output with PS that I only use iPhoto for non critical printing.
By restore I meant try changing other settings. There are other areas that can be tried. Color correction: ColorSync, none or the Canon option. Under Color Matching I have ColorSync and Vendor Matching options. Mine is set to Vendor Matching which may mean that the printer is making some decisions on the color.
Run a test to see if there's any color profile change to a file after importing into iPhoto. Import a photo, Control+click on its thumbnail and select Show File. When you get to the file in the Finder open it with Preview, type Command+i and check the Info window for the color profile. Now edit the file, preferably crop so a new modified file has to be created, Control+click on the thumbnail and select Show File again. This will take you to the modified version where you can open with Preview and check it's profile. Open the original source file with Preview and check it's profile. See if there are any differences.
I don't think your print driver is the culprit since all the other apps print OK. If you haven't tried printing from Preview do so to see if it's OK or like iPhoto. You're not the only one who has problems with color and iPhoto but there has been no silver bullet solution found. Printing from PS may be you only workaround option till a fix is found. Be sure to report this to Apple in detail, especially about other apps printing satisfactorily and mention the Preview print test. Wish I had better news for you. Color management is one of the biggest issues for many.
Just thought of something else you can try. Duh. Should have mentioned it first: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If prints are still dark log into another account and try printing from iPhoto there. If prints a good there then post back. If they aren't then iPhoto is definitely the culprit somehow.
P.S. Just reread my post and it does seem a little rambling but I do that sometimes while trying to come up with other solutions to try. Hope you can get thru it OK.

  • IPhoto Printer Presets

    Hi,
I have two Macs. One is an older laptop running Tiger and the other is a newer laptop running Leopard that I use for work. I lived may of the new iPhoto features in iLife '08 and so a bought this upgrade for my older Mac. However, on the Leopard machine when I print photos it gives me some options under 'Presets' to specify matte or gloss printer paper. On the older machine (running exactly the same iPhoto software) the only option under 'Presets' is 'Standard'. This makes all my photos look awful.
Does anyone know how I can make the other options available under the 'Presets' pull down menu when printing from iPhoto?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marie.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What printer are you using? Each printer has a slightly different print window setup.
