IPhoto: problem opening "events"
We have iPhoto version 9.2.1 (628) on our mac. We can access iPhoto itself, access all photos separately but anytime we try to access anything from the events section the program goes straight into hanging mode. The only way 'out' is to force quit.
Any ideas on what might be wrong?
OK am going to try to download 9.4.3
just one suggestion. When you install the update your iPhoto Library will have to be upgraded. That is a major rebuild of the library because the format changed. Be sure you have a current backup of the library and plenty of free disk space, because iPhoto will need working space.
how much free disk space do you have?

Iphoto 09 open event from picture after search
ok so if I search iphoto 09 by a particular word and find a picture, I can sometimes see the picture is part of an event that has other pictures, but how do I show the whole event? Drives me mad eg If I search for 'tv' I can get a picture (see link below) & see there are 60 other pictures in the folder. However if I right click I can't see any suitable choice to open the entire event. If I double click the event or picture it does nothing if I'm in the situation I show below. (The preferences are set that double click would open event it says). The double-click does open the event if I am looking overall at all the events (ie haven't searched by keyword). I don't have 'show event' as an option when right clicking either (I keep seeing references to this when googling)
eg I click on 'Events' top left (so all events are visible on the main screen) then search for 'tv' in the search box, it displays as above eg I can see there are 60 pictures within that event, yet if I right-click there is no 'Show Event' option. Show event is not even a greyed out option.

I have the Events menu selected (behaves the same if I have Photos as the selected menu):

So if I understand:
1.) The goal is to restore the iPhoto Library from a point before the issues started happening
2.) When you try to go backwards in Time Machine while inside the iPhoto window you get a blank Library when you get to the date range you want.
What to do:
- As you cannot seem to access the iPhoto contents using the iPhoto window I would suggest the following:
1.) Navigate using the Finder to ~/Pictures (or whatever folder you are currently housing your iPhoto Library in)
2.) Rename the current iPhoto Library to something else (Like iPhoto Library Old etc)
3.) While looking at this Pictures window, activate Time Machine and go back in time to a date when YOU ARE SURE iPhoto was working fine and had the images you want
4.) Click on the iPhoto Library in the Time Machine window and click on Restore
-- This will restore the Library from the date in question
-- You will have 2 libraries once the restore is complete. The freshly restored library and the old library. Keep the old library just for safe keeping until such time as you determine you have all the pictures you want. Then you can do whatever you want with it (trash it, etc)
Hope that helps. -
Can not open Events photos in iPhoto 9.5.1
can not open Events photos in iPhoto 9.5.1
We need detaoils
What does show for the ones that do not have the picture?
Is is an ! - if do
This indicates a disconnect between the Thumbnail and the original
this can be caused by two things
1 - User action deleting items from inside the iPhoto library - can be directly - can be from the All images list (never delete from there) - can be from running cleanup software like MacKeeer, CleanMac2 or other dangerous, defective software that improperly deletes or changes things in the iPhoto library - if you have done any of these things you must restore your backup from before you did them and damaged your iPhoto library - and I recommend getting rid of any "clean up software" ASAP (although being essentially MalWear it is not easy)
2 - corruption of the iPhoto library - If it is not #1 then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - repair permissions and then rebuild your database

But when I select edit in iPhoto, elements opens but the photo does not open in elements. I'm using a Macbook pro 15 inch with retina display with OS 10.8.4 What is the problem?

Problems opening photos in iPhoto
Hi aim having problems opening photos in iPhoto?
Hi
Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. -
IPhoto - open event in a separate window
I've recently upgraded iPhoto. I was previously using iPhoto '06, which had the option to right-click on an event & select "open event in separate window". I found very useful & can't find this option in the new version of iPhoto. Is it not available? If not, is there any way I can reinstall my previous version of iPhoto from the iLife 06 disks?? As I'm really struggling without this feature!!
That feature is no longer available.
Yes you can reinstall v6.
Have you a copy of the v6 library? -

If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.

IPhoto Titles of Events are not readable
Hi,
i´ve an issue with the interaction of background colour and text colour. In the event view background is dark grey and text is black. Therefore you can hardly read the text under events. When i change background colour only in picture view can changes be noticed. Generally the headlines in black are not readable if you prefer dark grey as background. Any suggestions? Thank´s in advance.
DirkhoernerD:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's strange because my Event view background is black and the text is white. When viewing an open event the background can be adjusted in iPhoto Preferences just the same as the Photos view.
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder and see if that will help.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto '08 opens photos slowly
I'm using a G5 Power Mac with a 1.6GHz processor, 768Mb RAM, OS 10.4.10 and I'm noticing iPhoto '08 opens photos slowly. The files open in a jerky manner. is there anything I can do to improve performance? Would increasing RAM by 1GB help, (total of 1.768GB)?
How much free space do you have on your boot drive? Do you have all of the thumbnails displayed or do you have the events closed except for those you're using?
Do you Twango?

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos
Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

A FIX for iPhoto 11 opening older libraries
Had the same problem everyone else has had. Then I was thunk in the forehead by an obvious trick. I use iPhoto Library manager. I opened IPLM and and clicked on the icon for creating a NEW LIBRARY (upper left corner of IPLM screen). I named it TestLibrary. I then launched this new file from within IPLM -- and iPhoto 11 (v 9.1) opened! That is, the app opened with a new library that contained no pictures. I dragged a couple of test jpg's into the library. Then I quit and reopened TestLibrary several times, to make sure I wasn't counting my chickens too soon. TestLibrary opened fine each time. I then quit IPLM and went directly to my picture libraries in the Pictures folder and launched them from the finder. EACH AND EVERYONE OPENED! They not only opened but iPhoto 11 performed the "update" function very quickly, even on the larger libraries. Again, I quit and reopened the files several times to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
I suspect the IPLM manager may be partially culpable. I note that many people who posted this problem also use IPLM.
FYI: I figured out this fix while standing here at a counter in my local Apple Store (Leawood, KS). The floor sales rep who tried to help me earlier -- a cute and very friendly blonde with a killer smile -- had no idea about the iPhoto problem. But she was very kind and took my emil address and set me up for a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow. I'm looking all over the store now for her. nowto share my success -- but she has wandered off. Rats. She really is cute; I'm single. Which is none of your business. Where was I? Oh yeah. Before Ms. Cute saleswoman wandered off and aftyr my heart rate returned to normal, I decided to experiment a little more. That's when I came up with the idea of using IPLM to create a blank new file. Getting ready to leave now. ..... NEW UPDATE: I finally spotted the very nice (and very cute) Apple saleswoman who had been helping me. Some other customer was flirting with her, pretending that he didn't know a thing about his new laptop. Rightttttt... I interrupted and asked her for a dance. Just kidding. I told her I had fixed my iPhoto libraries. She smiled, nodded, said "GREAT!" I melted. I offered to hang around a few minutes in case she wanted to come over and see how I fixed iPhoto. While waiting for her I thought I should type this and post it on the Forum. The very nice (and BEYOND cute) saleswoman still hasn't stopped by yet. I will wait a few more minutes. I'm in love. But the store is very busy. I will wait a few more minutes. I am realllly in love. Did I mention she was cute and very polite? Gotta go now. Perhaps Ms. Cuteness and I will meet in another time, place or dimension. After all, she has my name an email address. Maybe she'll send an email later and ask me for a date — strictly for professional and technical information purposes, of course; to find out how I fixed the iPhoto problem so that she can share it with other staff and customers. She probably won't, which means other Mac owners who wander in today with the same iPhoto problem will also fall in love with Ms. Cute but they won't learn a darn thing about my iPhoto fix. That kind of customer relations conduct would normally make me very angry. But nothing is normal anymore. It's hard to be angry when you're madly in love. -- DavidiPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Update 10/24: I released a quick 3.5.8 update yesterday, which doesn’t yet provide full iPhoto ‘11 compatibility, but does provide a couple improvements for iPhoto ‘11 users, including a fix for those experiencing the issue of being unable to reopen a library after upgrading it to the new iPhoto version. If you have such a library, simply open the library up via iPLM, and you should be prompted by iPhoto to upgrade the library again. Once it’s complete, you should then be able to close and reopen the library normally.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
What I can do:
- I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message. I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail. If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location. Please choose a different location." I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard. I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem. -
Photoshop cs4 and import to iphoto problem
Hi to all,
I would appreciate any help on this problem:
I process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
In photoshop cs3 I never encountered this problem.
The only way I can solve it is if i open the jpeg file in preview and save it again as jpeg. then i am able to import the new jpeg.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for your help.process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
That's because you're saving it inside the iPhoto Library package and trying to import from there. You must save all RAW edited files to the desktop or outside of the iPhoto Library package. iPhoto will not import any file located inside it's library package.
If you use CS4 to edit jpgs from within iPhoto the following may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
