IPhoto problem.  Photos are disappearing

I have a MacBook Air with OSX Version 10.9.3 and iPhoto 9.5.1....iPhotos has developed a problem in that my photos do not remain continuously visible any more. When I view my photos they appear briefly then disappear from the screen. When I click on an individual photo I get a black exclamation mark on a white triangle background with a black border.  Can you please help correct this.

The ! shows up when iPhoto loses the link to the original file.
Have you used any apps to "clean" or "speed up" or otherwise "optimise" your Mac recently?
Assuming you haven't:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Iphoto slow problem - photos are organised in folders not film rolls

I'm suffering from the iphoto slow problem and have been trying to find a way to stop iphoto from loading all the photos every time.
My photos are arranged in folders, so I don't seem to have the option to stop the photos being loaded by film roll.
Does anyone have any other ideas ?

I'm not sure what that means. Whether you have albums or not, iPhoto still considers a single import batch as a roll. If the rolls are not collapsed, then everytime you launch iPhoto, it assumes you want to be able to see your entire library, and it goes about the job of making all the thumbnails available.

  • Scrolling through photos, restarting iPhoto: "Hidden Photos" are unhidden!

    Hi,
As you may know, iPhoto has this great feature where you can mouse over an Event to scroll through the photos in it. iPhoto also has another great feature - the possibility to hide photos!
However, here's when they both went wrong: I had a few Hidden Photos in an event, yet when I moused over it - they showed up! Just makes them not so hidden...
Also, when I last closed iPhoto, Hidden Photos were checked to show. As I opened iPhoto up again - they were still unhidden. It would be nice if they automatically hid themselves upon closing. Is there an Apple Script available for this?
In the same scenario, I hid the photos manually. And as I opened up a photo in an event up full screen, and browsed through the event using the arrow keys - a hidden photo appeared! This, as I understand - is a bug. Where would I report this?
    I hope you can help!
    Thank you for your time,
    Rudi

First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Then rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • 'Send to iDVD" from iPhoto problems - photos don't show up properly

    Hi
When I send photos/albums from iPhoto to iDVD using the function: Share->Send to iDVD' iDVD opens up, but the screen is blank in iDVD, the project info shows the photos are there, but there is nothing playing - just the blank screen.
When I do the same action on our Tiger iMac it works as advertised, not so on our Leopard iMac.
All software is up to date - iDVD 08, iPhoto 7.1.4
    Any thoughts anyone? Thanks

Thank you. It doesn't actually "fail" in that it crashes or comes up with any error messages etc. It just doesn't show anything in the screen. I have pasted the Console entries that came up when I sent album to iDVD - can't see much evidence in there but you might?

  • When working in my photo album in iphoto my photos are replaced with a grey box and an !. I can't see the image on the page.

Lately when I am working in my photo album in iPhoto my images are replaced with a grey box and an ! . I can't see the images on the page. All my photos are high quality.  What am I doing wrong?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

As I scroll down in photo, the image of the photo disappears.

the image of the photo disappears.
Are the thumbnails turning black? Or what do you mean exactly?
    What is your iPhoto version?
Back up your iPhoto library and try to rebuild it, see Old Toad's post:

  • Unable to synch iPhoto when photos are another user's

    Hi
I've had Apple TV for a few months and am unable to figure out how to synch an iPhoto library to our Apple TV. The problem is that the pictures are contained in an iPhoto library from another user on the same computer - my wife has all our pictures on her side of our iMac and I am unable to select her iPhoto library (inside of iTunes on my side of the computer) to synch our pictures to Apple TV (her iPhoto library is grayed out when I navigate to the folder). I have checked all folder permissions and sharing and it seems to be ok for me to edit/view, any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

It's not designed to do that.
Only thing to do would be to either add the photos to your iPhoto library or set up your wife's iTunes as a Shared library for AppleTV and when her account is active you could then Stream photos but not sync them.

  • IPhoto 6-photo are gone, just dotted lines.  info is still there.

I was working on macbook pro on airplane with an external HD where my iPhoto library is kept. My battery ran out so I closed the laptop and disconnected the ext. HD until I got home. After turning on the laptop at home, the computer opened up to iPhoto still open and images showing. Only I had forgotten to connect the ext. HD yet. I believe I closed the program and connected the ext. HD and reopened iPhoto. This time all the photo images were not displayed, only dotted lines where they would have been. This was true for the thumbnail and the large image. The info box still showed the correct file name and size etc. but no image. What happened and how do I fix this? I did go to the finder and iphoto library and found that I could see the images there, so they shouldn't be gone. Just need to know what to do so iphoto can see them all. Thanks
    Jon

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Photos are disappearing

I have the iPhone 2G and I just recently got the new software update, 3.0. Just the other day, I realized that my pictures weren't showing up in my camera roll. The ones that I take with the camera, the screenshots, or the ones that I save off the internet all won't show up when I go into the camera roll. The weird thing is that when I touch Photos to go into my camera roll, it has the correct number and the little icon even shows the last picture I took, but then when I actually go into the folder of pictures, only my pictures I already had are there and the number of photos at the bottom is incorrect. I'm not sure if this has to do with the update or not because I downloaded that about a week ago and this problem only started happening 2 nights ago. I've tried everything, like the hard restart of my phone and even the restore won't work. If anyone has any ideas, I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks!!

  • Is there a virus scanner for iPhoto? Photos are superimposing on another?

One particular photo keeps superimposing onto many other photos so when they are opened only a black square reveals or else a black square with an exclamation mark in it. How do I detect a virus and wipe it out? Maddie

    That's not a virus that's a damaged library database.

  • All my photos are Black Exclamation Marks - iphoto on ExtHD

My iphoto library is stored on an ext HD. i had a power outage now when i reopen iphoto all photos are black exclamation marks. how can i restore or fix this? i tried rebuild function but it didnt work. thanks

Since the rebuild fix didn't solve the problem give this a go:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Note:  if the latest version, V4, of iPhoto Library Manager doesn't run download the earlier version, V3.  It's available at the same website.

  • TS4108 My datas storing in iCloud are disappeared

Yesterday every seem to be normal. I can access all my newly contact which I added last week. Today when I wake up some of my data such as contact, calendar, photo are disappear from my account and effected to all my devices. Now I have only 146 photos store in icloud and my newly contacts are gone.
I never back up these data on my laptop. Is there anyway to recover these datas?
    Thank you

Don't try to use iCloud to back up data from your Mac.  iCloud is designed to keep your data consistent across your devices, not to back up your data.  Purchased media from the iTunes & App stores can often be redownloaded for free if necessary, depending on the type of media and the country in which you live (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519), as long as it is still available in the iTunes & App stores.  (Some movies are not redownloadable; depends on the studio.)  Since there is no gaurantee that the media will still be available when you want it, this is somewhat risky too.
The only real solution is to either get a larger hard drive, or move some of your other data to an external drive to free up space onyour computer.  Upgrading a MacBook hard drive is normally fairly easy and there are good sources for HD upgrades available, such as OWC.

Try updating to iPhoto 9.4.1. If it's not appearing in your Software Update yet, try updating using a .dmg installer downloaded from the following page on the Apple website:
    iPhoto 9.4.1
From the release notes for the new version:

If you want help you’ll need to give us more information. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
