IPhoto Question - Deleting files in Computer trash can

I have several JPG files listed in the contents of my trash on my computer's desktop (not in the iPhoto trash) that I would like to eliminate. I need to empty the contents of my computer's trash for general maintenance, but am paranoid about deleting photos. These files also reside in my iPhoto library. (When I attempt to transfer them out of the trash and back into iPhoto a duplicate file is created.) If I select "empty trash" under the Finder drop down menu, will this delete these photo files in iPhoto or just the copy that resides in the trash? In other words, is the iPhoto trash the one and only way to delete photos from your iPhoto library? Or will emptying the computer's trash do this as well?
M
P.S. I know this is probably a simple question, but switching from a PC to a MAC (love the MAC) has left me struggling at times to "convert" my prior computer skills. Thanks for your help!

If you are running a managed library - the default - with the preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto Library" checked then the finder trash is totally separate from the iPhoto trash and emptying it can not affect your photos in iPhoto
If you want to see drag the photos from the trash to a desktop folder and empty the trash - then put one back in the trash- check it in iPhoto and empty the trash and check it in iPhoto again - it will still be there - that should make you feel safer about trashing the rest of them

Yet another example of why it's a VERY BAD IDEA to do a clean install of Lion unless you are already VERY familiar with how to tweak the Mac OS. There's a reason Apple engineers removed it as an option. To accomplish it you have to erase your disk; not for the faint hearted.
Do you have a backup? PLEASE don't tell us you did this without a robust backup.
You erased the operating machine, so your computer went to the only place it could find one, the Recovery partition. And it's minimal, so it has to download everything in small chunks to reinstall itself. So yeah, it could take 10 hours.
Here's another option. Do you still have the original disks that came with your machine? Put one in and restart from it. You can reinstall your old system much faster. Then go to the Mac App Store and your purchase history and see if you can redownload Lion (I think that still works).
And this time just do yourself a favor and install per Apple's instructions. When the machine starts into Lion, use Setup ***'t (the first thing that fires up) to migrate from your backup.

Choose your Home folder and "Get Info" (command-i). Under "Ownership & Permissions" be sure you have "Read & Write" privileges. Under "Details", be sure you are the owner.

i have an ipad version 5.1.1. i have multiple albums in the ipad and i want to transfer some photos to my computer but when i open the ipad files via "computer" i can only see pictures from one of the albums.what should i do?

You can only import photos from the camera roll into the computer. Is that the album that you are seeing?
Any albums that you create on the device itself (the iPad that is) cannot be transferred to your computer. iPad created albums do not contain copies of your photos but merely pointers to those photos so they do not actually exist in those albums.

That's where deleted files normally go - to the Trash.

Reinstall it from the computer's original disks or an iLife 09 or earlier install DVD, and then run all applicable iPhoto updaters.

  • Why can't I delete this video file from my trash can?

I have a video file that I will not disappear from my trash can when I click the "empty track" button. I managed to move the folder containing the video file from documents to the trash after a lot of effort, but it kept telling me that I didn't have the privileges necessary to delete the video permanently. Now the video file is sitting inside a folder inside the trash can where I can't move anywhere else. If I try to move it anywhere else, it simply copys to that folder but stays inside the original stays in the trash can as well, but I can still delete the copy and the original stays sitting in the trash can. Can anyone help me so I can get rid of this file once and for all.

ho yeah .. i know that, but i tried even in a low quality and it's not worked.
Maybe it's related to the TimeQuick?

  • Can i retrieve a deleted file when my Trash is already empty????

    hey guys,
i need your help!!! Can i still retrieve an important file, that i accidentally deleted, when my Trash is already empty??? please please help!!! is there any way that i could retrieve the file???

    Hi leecastasus;
First thing is to stop using the Mac. The more you use the Mac the greater your chances of overwriting the deleted file.
Get a demo copy of Data Rescue II. The demo will tell you if it can recover the file for you. If it can then you must pay for it to do that actual recovery to another disk.

  • HT1526 I'm trying to delete files from the trash and an .InProgress file in Time Machine that cannot be moved to the trash. I cannot unmount the TM disk either.  If I use the chflags -R nouchg  command, I get a "Resource busy" message. Any suggestions?

I've got one or maybe two problems.  Time Machine routinely crashes and there is a file in the TM folder that is an .InProgress file at the end of successful backups. Can't delete it, even using various sudo commands in Terminal.  These come back with a "Resource busy" message.
Similarly, there is a Microsoft Office alias in my trash that will not delete, again including various delete or Terminal commands.  Also "Resource busy"
I can't reformat the TM volume since it cannot unmount and it also cannot unmount the whole disk, which contains some other backup files I'd rather keep.
    Any suggestions?
    Mike

I'm not sure I can be very helpful since I was doing a lot of things and ultimately the problems went away.  But one thing that definitely seemed to help was to shut down, restart, do something, shut down again and repeat.  So with a clean start, try to move the file to the trash.  If that works, shut down restart and look to see if it is still in the trash.  Empty the trash. Shut down if it appears to empty and then restart.  It seemed sometimes that the computer was doing what I wanted then something was overriding this and restoring.  The shutdowns immedately after I could do something but before it engaged an override operation seemed to keep this from happening.
Sorry to not have more to offer but...
