IPhoto Question for iMac

iPhoto is not working. I purchased iPhoto '11 and installed. Still saying I need to upgrade. What next?

What system are you running?  If it's Mavericks then look at this screenshot. It indicates which of the previous IPhoto versions are compatible with Mavericks and which are not and require upgrading to iPhoto 9.5.1 via the App Store. Also indicated are which versions qualify for a free upgrade to 9.5.1:

  • Questions for iMac Users

I am considering buying an iMac, but I was hoping I could get a few questions anwered first.
I need to be able to use Microsoft Excel. I know they have the Mac version, but I have heard mixed reviews on that version. I use it almost everyday and am a very advanced Excel user so I need the same features. Would it be better to buy the Mac version or also run Windows on the Mac and use the XP version of Office (I don't know how to do this, is it easy to set up?).
I also have a nice notebook that I use all the time that is a PC. Another possible option would be to link to that computer and use Office from there. Is this possible?
I would just like your input on what you think would be the best option. I need to be able to open the excel files on PC computers, but I'm pretty sure the Mac Office program allows you to do that.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Firstly please note that this is a forum for legacy iMacs (old G4 Power PC processors) so if you have any questions about the current iMac offering please post in the iMac (Early 2006) forum - where you'll get better response.
    1. I don't have the latest version of Office for Mac (which is 2004) but rather Office v.X (which was released shortly after Office for Mac 2001 came out). I also haven't personally used Excel to a very advanced level but from my experience Excel v.X is more advanced than Excel 97 and at least on a par with Excel 2k (Both of which Windows versions I use at work).
    2. Macs and PCs network very very easily nowdays. WiFi (known as Airport in Mac circles), Gigabit Ethernet, IP over Firewire are all standard on pretty much every new Mac now. Here's a guide to Networking Tiger (Mac OS 10.4) to Windows XP.
    3. I've never had any problems sharing Powerpoint, Word, or Excel file between PC and Mac. In fact I've had more trouble moving files between Office 97 and Office 2k than over to a Mac. However be aware the Mac version of Office doesn't include Access, Publisher etc and our version of Outlook is called Entourage. Microsoft has this year dropped Internet Explorer for Mac and Outlook Express was dropped some time ago after their performance didn't live up to Apple's offerings (Safari and Mail respectively).
Of course you'll be buying an Intel Mac so you always have the insurance of going back to Windows if you really must. Boot Camp is Apple's beta offering to install Windows but there are programmes that will allow the OSes to run at the same time. The next version of Mac OS X (Leopard or 10.5) is due late this year / early next (approx the same time as Vista) and it's likely Boot Camp will be built in to Leopard.

  • Iphoto question for MacBook Pro.

I am trying to superimpose two photos together in iphoto. Can anyone tell me how to do this?
    Thanks

You can't, in a word. iPhoto doesn't do compositing. You need an external editor for that.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

  • How do I create a journal from an iMac based system - I can see how to do it with the new iPhoto app for iPhone or iPad

How do I creat a journal to share using my mac air?  I can see how to do it with my iPad or iPhone 4s with the new iphoto app for them. I guess "journals" replace Galleries in the Cloud. I do not see the same functionality of the upgraded iPhoto app on my Mac air, iMac ormac mini.
    Thanks

Afraid no one outside of Apple knows what plans - if any - they have.

  • I hv lost my icon for iphoto on my Imac Mac OSX10.5.8.   I still hv my pics but can no longer creat albums and events.  If I upgrade to the latest Mountain Lion, will my pics go into the new iphoto?       I would like to update Mountain lion. Will

I hv lost my icon for iphoto on my Imac Mac OSX10.5.8.   I still hv my pics but can no longer creat albums and events.  If I upgrade to the latest Mountain Lion, will my pics go into the new iphoto?

From where did you lose the iPhoto icon? From the Dock? If so, then it's still in your Applications folder. Find it there then drag the icon back into the Dock. If it's no longer in Applications perhaps you've moved or renamed it. Use Spotlight to search for "iphoto."
Upgrading to Mountain Lion will not affect your iPhoto Library unless you erase the hard drive first. Be sure you backup before any system upgrade.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.

  • I have Macbook Pro 2013 with pre installed iPhoto. And an iMac without this app. Do I have to buy it for iMac to use?

So the question is - can I use iPhoto with my iMac since I have it on my Macbook Pro. App Store offers me to buy it.

From the iMac, log into the App Store with the AppleID you used to set up the MBP. Then check your Purchases list

  • Software for iMac question . . .

Do you know of a software program for iMac that is comparable to InfoSelect or InfoMagic in the PC world? They provide a place to organize snippets (to pages) of information in an easy manner.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
iMac Core Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks David. I had done many Google searches and didn't come up with a single possibility.
After posting, I used "Stumble Upon" in Firefox and "Mac OS" and turned up SOHO. I'm testing it now.
I will also test your 2 suggestions--I'm sure one of the 3 will be close to what I am looking to have.
    Thanks again.

  • How do I make a private album in new Photos for IMac?

How do I make a private album in the new Photos for IMac? I had one in iPhoto, and now that all the photos migrated to Photos my private album is not hidden anymore. Thanks for help!

Photos does not hide photos in albums at all.  Photos can only be hidden from Moments, Collections, Years.
If you want private albums, move the photos in questions to a different Photos Library, that you keep hidden.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • Best setup for iMac with SSD & HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders

Best setup for iMac with SSD and HDD? Best location of scratch & home folders?
    Computer:
iMac 2.93 GHz Quad core i7, 8GB RAM, 1 TB HDD + 256 GB SSD
There is not much info from Apple about the best way to set up an iMac with a Hard Drive and Solid state drive. I’ve looked at a few of the forum posts across the web and came up with a plan and lots of questions. (I do use photoshop frequently, but not on a professional level):
    1. I will keep OS and Applications on SSD
    2. About moving the home folder: I saw some posts about moving the whole home folder, but it makes more sense to me to only move selected fodlers withing the home folder tomake the best use of the SSD. So will keep the home folder on SSD, but move certain folders (document /music/iphoto/download) to 1 TB HDD via instructions I found on the macintoshperformanceguide website:
    cd
    sudo cp -r Documents /Volumes/Master
    sudo rm -rf Documents
    sudo ln -s /Volumes/Master/Documents Documents
    3. I would like to get 8 more RAM when I can afford it
    4. I will attach an external hard drive for most of my documents and backup storage
    5. Now here is where I’m not sure what’s best:
    a. Should I partition my internal 1 TB hard drive and use the first partition as a scratch disc for photoshop and other applications? How much should I partition? Is there any benefit to this if the rive is partitioned?
    b. Should I use an external drive as a scratch disc?
    c. Any advice on a good 1-2 TB external drive?
    d. Should I just leave things in factory settings?
Don't assume I know the basics - I got all the above just by searching around. Any advice and commentary is appreciatedThanks.

Thanks for the advice and the links. yes, I would like to speed up ps as much as possible.
I wonder if putting the scratch disc on the same drive as the OS would cause them to interfere with each other? Even if they are on different partitions, they would not be able to be accessed at the same time, or could they? That's why I was wondering if I should place scratch disc on the internal HDD -- but then I don't know how much to partition for it (or to partition at all?)
ALso, I read on a few places that too much read/write on the SSD wears it down over time? Is this more of a theoretical concerns - it does not make sense to me since it has no moving parts!
thanks again for the advice ... I'm gonna go digest those links

  • I opened original iPhoto Library (from iMac 10.8.5) on new MBP and now it won't open on iMac

As my main computer I use an iMac which is not yet updated to Mavericks and I'd rather not update for now. I recently bought a MBP retina which has Mavericks on it.
Whilst I was using the shared network to copy over some files to my new macbook I opening the iPhoto library off my iMac onto my MBP. Everything worked fine. However when I tried to open that library on my iMac it doesn't work. I just get a pop up saying:
The library “iPhoto Library” cannot be opened.
To open it, you must upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto.
    Quit
I've tried updating but of course I cannot. I can't even double check what version of iPhoto I am running as everything is greyed out. When I go to the app store and click update I get:
Download an older version of this app?
The current version requires OS X 10.9 or later, but you can download the last compatible version.
When I download the older version it doesn't do anything unfortunately. Is there a way to get my iphoto library back on my iMac as there's a LOT of images on there that I need.
    Thanks

You will need to restore your iPhoto Library from a back up of your iMac prior to when you opened it on your new MBP Retina.
The iPhoto app for OS X Mavericks upgrades the iPhoto Library DB and you can't go back. There should have been a message displayed when you first tried opening it from your MBP Retina warning you that the libary will be upgraded.
So, as long as you have a back up of the library prior to opening it with an OS X Mavericks Mac, you can continue using it with your iMac running OS X Mountain Lion. What this means is, until you upgrade your iMac to OS X Mavericks and the newer version of iPhoto, you will have to maintain 2 iPhoto Libraries and not share it.

  • My apple TV will not show my iPhotos travel photos in sequence. I set up a sequence of photos that STAY in sequence when viewing in iPhoto on my iMac, but they do not show in sequence when my Apple TV shows them on my TV screen. My Apple TV is MC 572C/A

My Apple TV will not show my photos in iPhoto on my iMac in the same sequence of images that I can see when viewing the iPhoto photos on my iMac. This is especially frustrating when I try to show my travel pictures in sequence on my TV. I have to resort to showing them on my iMac which defeats the principle purpose for purchasing my MacTV. Does anyone have a solution?
My Apple TV is Model MC 572C/A and the software is 5.2.1 (6025)
My iMac is Mac OSX version 10.7.5
    THANKS!
    Doug May

I can't recall whether slideshows are ordered by title or date, but you can manually re-arrange the albums in iPhoto, then batch change them once you have the order you want.

  • How do I move my iPhoto library from iMac G5 OSX 10.4 to iMac OSX 10.7?

How do I move my iPhoto library from iMac G5 OSX 10.4 to iMac OSX 10.7.2?

If you are doing an upgrade on the same Mac, just leave it where it is. When you do the upgrade, as long as it is not a "clean install" (wipe everything and start over), you should not lose any files.
If you are moving it to another Mac, move it to the same location in your user account on the other Mac. For example, no matter which Mac I'm on, the iPhoto library is always in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.

  • How to set up 2 separate iPhoto libraries for two users

My wife and I have a macbook air, she being one user and me the other. We both have iphones and recently upgraded to the 5s. She had not ever openned itunes or iphoto on the computer as she used the it mainly for word processing, email and surfing the web. I, on the other hand, would play around in iphoto and ensure photo streaming was working and have a large itunes music collection.
When I openned up her iphoto, all my photos from my account downloaded into hers. I forget what I did to make this happen but it might have done so automatically.
My question is: how can I set up her own iphoto account when she is logged into her user account on the computer? We don't wish to share iphoto libraries as now is the case.
And, this might not be the correct forum to bring this up, but when I take pictures on my iphone 5s, they stream to her iphoto library as well as mine. But, her pictures taken on her iphone don't stream/backup to either of our computer iphoto libraries even though she has an icloud account and photo streaming turned on on her phone.
I hope this makes sense as there are really 2 questions: setting up a separate iphoto library for each user on one computer, and, how to get photo streaming from her phone to her library
Thanks in advance for any help

First you both have to have your own user accounts on the MBA and separate iCloud accounts.  From there it's relatively simple to create you own libraries and have your respective iPhones link to those library when both devices are logged into the same iCloud account.
