IPhoto Questions (including rotating movie & save locations)

I've owned my new Macbook Pro for a little over a month now. Prior to this I have been using Linux (Red Hat, SuSE, Ubuntu, etc...) on my primary computer and MS Windows for many, many years. I am very used to the way Linux and Windows handle files including imported photos. Prior to my Macbook purchase, I was managing my iPhone and iPad with Windows 7. Please pardon my Mac OS X ignorance. I am new to this.
Here's my hardware:
Macbook Pro 15" Retina 512gb (mid 2014) with OS X 10.10.1
iPhone 5s (16gb)
iPad 4 retina (64gb)
Now the questions... When I import photos from my iPad or iPhone into iPhoto, the photo's do not go into the "Pictures" directory unlike Windows. I did some research and apparently iPhoto stores your photos in a database similar to the way iTunes works with music. However, unlike iTunes, you cannot browse the .jpg's and .mov's in the finder, you have to open them in iPhoto to see them. This creates a problem for me in that I can't back up my photos manually anymore to an external hard drive. I have to rely solely on Time Machine. I don't like that. Also, I'd just like to be able to browse my photos in finder. I want access to the .jpg's and .mov files so that I can copy them to USB thumb drives, etc... Is there a way to import your photos from the iPhone or iPad into the "Pictures" folder on my Macbook, then into a date sub folder similar to the way Windows imports photos? This would be preferable for me because I want access to the original files in finder, not just through iPhoto. If there is an "open in finder" option in iPhoto, obviously the photos are stored in folders on the Macbook. Why can't you just browse them from finder without using iPhoto? iTunes lets you do this. Is there a setting in iPhoto that I am missing that will allow this? If not there should be one similar to the iTunes "keep iTunes media folder organized" option.
Also, when I have to rotate a movie that is located in the iPhoto library, I know that I can click "open in finder" from iPhoto and open the .mov in Quicktime to rotate the movie. However, when saving (there's no save option, you have to close and are prompted to export) there is no option to save in the original location and rewrite the movie in iPhoto. The only option is to store in one of the browsable file folders (Movies, Pictures, Documents, etc...). Consequently, when opening iPhoto, the movie file remains in the original rotation, unchanged. How do I have Quicktime save to the original location of the movie in the iPhoto library? You can not open iPhoto Library.photolibrary from within Quicktime and browse to the folder containing the original movie. This is mind boggling to me. I suppose I could delete the original movie in iPhoto and import the rotated movie into iPhoto, but this seems like a huge waste of steps, time and is really inefficient.
I don't like not having control over my photos. I'd like to be able to view all of them in my finder. Am I missing a preferences setting or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't like not having control over my photos. I'd like to be able to view all of them in my finder.
You have far more control over your Photos with iPhoto than with the Finder. But you can simply use the Finder or any other app to manage your photos, iPhoto is not compulsory in any way. If you are going to use iPhoto then there is a conceptual leap to make, and then it begins to make sense.
That leap is this: that Jpeg is not your Photo. That .doc file is not your novel. That .mp3 is not the song. In each case, these files are containers for the data - with characteristics attuned to the nature of the data, sure - but your data is the photo, the novel, the song. Or put another way, they're the shoebox, your data is the shoes.
iPhoto is about the Photo and not the file. If you want to manage files by all means do, and best to use a file manager. iPhoto is for managing Photos. The best analogy I can come up with is the Contacts.app. (and like all analogies, it's limited but here goes.) The Contacts.app is a central store and repository for anything to do with your address book, emails, phone numbers. Somewhere on the HD is a file or files with all this data, but you never go there. You either use the Contacts.app or any of the many hooks built-in to the OS to access, edit, share and manipulate this data.
Now try the same with iPhoto: iPhoto is a central store and repository for anything to do with your photos. Somewhere on the HD is a file or files with all this data, but you never go there. You either use iPhoto or any of the many hooks built-in to the OS to access, edit, share and manipulate this data. So, iPhoto replaces the file manager for anything to do with your photos, because it's about the photos and not the files.
Coming from Windows and Linux, especially, this level of abstraction can be confusing, but that's what it is. Added to this is the level of virtualisation used in iPhoto - all edits are virtual until you export - the non-destructive editing feature can also be confusing. But that's why iPhoto can't be navigated via the Finder. Comparing it with iTunes, which has no editing, is not comparing like with like. iPhoto will always preserve your original data - the photo as shot.
To specifics:
For help accessing your photos in iPhoto see this user tip:

This User Tip

has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
This creates a problem for me in that I can't back up my photos manually anymore to an external hard drive.
Of course you can. Simply Export them. File -> Export. Now you can choose exactly what to export: the original, an edited version, if different qualities and different formats. But again, simply backing up a version of the photos is not really backing up your work, just the raw data. So you need to back up the Library as well.
have to rely solely on Time Machine. I don't like that.
No you don't.
Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
Is there a way to import your photos from the iPhone or iPad into the "Pictures" folder on my Macbook, then into a date sub folder similar to the way Windows imports photos?
Two ways:
1, With iPhoto you can run a Referenced Library. But I cannot urge you enough not to do this. iPhoto does not have the tools to manage this and you're only strong up grief for further down the road. It's unnecessary and only makes more work for exactly zero advantage.
For more on iPhoto and file management see this User Tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6361
2. Use some other system for managing your photos. Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) will get your images from your camera/phone/whatever and put them wherever you like. Just don't use iPhoto.
However, when saving (there's no save option, you have to close and are prompted to export) there is no option to save in the original location and rewrite the movie in iPhoto.
Again, this has got to do with non-destructive  processing and that's why you're better importing movies to iMovie and processing them there and then exporting them to the finder, and only when you've finished them, importing them to iPhoto. (Or just not shooting video in portrait).

  • Move save location for all users

Anyone know how you can move your iMovie files to a different harddrive? Something that any student can do? I want them to be able to drag them to an external drive or save to an external drive so they can work on a different computer.

    Hi
This is a HIGH DANGER project !
    a. *NEVER !* move anything outside iMovie eg on desktop and especially the folders
    • iMovie events
    • iMovie projects
If You move them - iMovie get's confused and very often can't be repaired.
    b. in iMovie'08 & '09 all moveing is made within program !
    c. iMovie'08 are not good at this at all - only one part can be moved and as I remember it it is iMovie Events
that can be moved in Event browser to another hard disk.
The Event browser window - up in right hand corner has a square when clicked toogle
view of events as dates - or on what hard disk it is stored
    • set it to show hard disks
    • now select an event and move it to another hard disk in this Browser window.
    • follow instructions - if You want a copy or a full move
The projects can't be moved in iMovie'08 (not important though they don't take
so much space - just reference info as I get it)
    iMovie'09 - are far more better than iM'08 !

  • IPhoto can't import rotated movies?

    Folks,
I have some movies taken with my digital camera in portrait mode. I found a program to rotate the movies (TransformMovie), but iPhoto doesn't let me import them. It gives an error message.
The movies play ok just in Quicktime (or frontrow or whatever).
It seems iPhoto doesn't like rotated movies. is there a workaround?
Is this the same for movies rotated with QT Pro?
    Tx,
    Phil

    Phil:
Movies rotated with Quicktime Pro import into iPhoto OK. I downloaded and tried TransformMovie and it wouldn't import. It had been changed to a .mov file. There were some differences in the video portion as indicated by QT Player, mostly in video offset. But changing it to what the QT version was didn't help. When I did a Save As in QT Player the resulting file was importable. QT Pro is worth the money and more. You can do a lot of things with it.
EURIKA! Just change the file's extension back to .avi and it will import.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • In iPhoto '11, how do I manually move a locations pin?

I'm trying to add locations to some older photos that I've recently scanned and added to my iPhoto '11 library.
While I can successfully add a general location to each photo, what I cannot do is "select, drag, and drop your pin into the proper location" as described in step 5 of this link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2550
If I select a photo and attempt to move its location pin on the map at the botton of the Info panel, nothing happens. The pin moves, but it doesn't "stick" in its new location. If I leave the photo and then return, the location remains in the original general location.
    Any ideas?
    Josh

Update: Still can't get it working, I move a pin, and next time I go to that photo it's returned to the original place. Places function is basically worthless.
    Another glitch I noticed:
    - iphoto adds names from your address book to faces - great.
    - If the contact it's adding from your addressbook has changed their email address, the OLD email address shows up!!!!
    - e.g. I added "Tommy McTomson" to a photo months ago; I then changed Tommy's email address from yahoo.com email to say hotmail.com
    - Any future pictures of Tommy I add show his OLD yahoo email address under his name in "Faces". Whci isn't really a hassle cos I don't see how you can use the email address from that biut of the sscreen in iphoto, but come on dudes, it's really slack................
Also, you can't see an iphone when it's connected when in iphoto 11 full screen mode. But I'll check this & clarify later (not on mac at the moment).
Really not impressed with iPhoto '11, especially after reading all the negative stuff on forums across the net.

  • In iPhoto '11 where are movies located?

In iPhoto '11 where are movies located?  When we download photos & movies, they aren't apparent in the "Lst 12 months" & "Library" areas.  They show up as spearate groupings in the "Last Import" but not in the History.  Thanks.

Movies are stored in Events, like photos.
they show up as spearate groupings in the "Last Import"
Select a movie in Last Import and Right-Click on it. Choose 'Show Event' from the menu. This will bring you to the Event containing the movie.
If the photo or movie is in Last Import, then it is in the Library somewhere,  just not where you expect it to be. Usual causes: the date on your camera is wrong, and so the date on the photo is wrong, or the sorting of the Events has changed (View Menu -> Sort Events)

  • I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db file but keep the media in it's existing location. Is this possible?

I want to move the location of my iTunes Library db files to a new location without moving the whole lot, including my Media file [Music, Films etc etc files]... in this case I want to move the Library db files to my iCloud Folder so I have a backup of the Library db File [ good idea huh :-) ]  and I should be able to open iTunes whether the media can be seen at that point or not.  is it possible to just move the Library files and then tell iTunes where they are so it can launch iTunes?
Is this just a case of cut and paste the Library files to the new location, then updating config in iTunes?
This may be a silly question but in my book, no question is silly if it needs to be asked.
    Any ideas, advise welcomed.

Thanks Chris but I think I have not explained it well enough.
    This...
I am using an iCloud Folder on my local Mac hard drive. iCloud Folder syncs with iCloud and works like a backup. It is a subscription service that Apple offer.
You should be adding them to iCloud, not your local drive.
Yes I understand how it works.
The iCloud folder on the local drive is (and should be) managed by the iCloud drive/OS, not you.
You are simply trying to work around iCloud drive.
I just want to know if I can move the iTunes Library cb files to a new folder/location on my macs local hard drive
... and tell iTunes where to look for the Library so that it can launch / startup
The iTunes library.itl file is part of the iTunes library.
I already back up my actual media files (music etch) by other methods.
You should back up the entire iTunes folder, not just the media.
If you wna to backup the iTune slibrary.itl, just copy it to the iCloud drive on the left side of aFinder window.
You don't need to go (and shouldn't) into the iCloud folder in your user library.
This is what the "guru" will tell you.

  • Changing save location when Share to iDVD

When I create slideshows and then choose to "Share to iDVD," the resulting movies are always filed in my Movies folder. I prefer them to be saved to my external hard drive, to conserve my disk space. How can I change this save location?
    Thanks, Tonia

    Tonia:
After they have been shared and imported to iDVD move them to the external where you want and delete from the Movies folder. The next time you launch iDVD it will tell you it can't find the files and ask you to locate them. Navigate to the external and select them. You'll be back in business as usual.
    Do you Twango?

Hi Sharon, I'm not sure is this the right place to ask the question, put feel free to move my responce to some other forum if needed. We have in our company (130 000 employees) a global Hana implementation going on and we would like to use Lumira for our frontend financial reporting. However I would need to know the timeline when can Lumira deliver fallowin reporting needs: We want to have current monthly financial figures from Hana views straight from the source. The historical data we would show using existing Bex queries. And In the lumira we would like to smash up historical data and the Hana view current data all together. The users would access this with the BI launchpad and with single sign on, they would just press one button and refresh the BW query data, plus hana view data from one report. My question is: When would this be possible in Lumira ?  Atleast what I have understood, is that BW queries (exit variables, time dependent hierarchies, variants) is not yet supported. However when I was in teched in berlin 2014 november, Lumira developers told me that end of March 2015, this would be available. Is this still true or is there some delays to that timetable ? best regards iiro keitaanranta

  • Want to change the default save location- users have networked home dirs

I am doing some work for a school which is still using iMovie HD because it allows them to save their movie projects wherever they want. The issue is that iMovie 08 and 09 do not allow you to change the location in which they save their movies. Currently all users/students have network home folders, so their home directory, documents, etc all pull across the network. All students are limited to 1GB of space, and the system is an older G4 Server- 2GHz with 1GB of RAM and 2x 500GB hard drives. Since the students can make some large projects transferring that data back and forth can kill the server. Currently they are staying with iMovie HD so they can save it to the local hard drive, and when the student comes back in for class they sit at the same machine- thus giving them access to their stored movie files.
This summer they plan to upgrade both Xserves, but again internal storage in the Xserve is a joke and in my opinion not planned out properly. Which might require them to use one of the Apple Promise RAID units- major financial burden on a school.
I wanted to see if there was a way to change the default save location for iMovie 08 or 09 to the local storage rather then the "Home" folder for each user.
    Thanks so much!

    wrong info.
iM08/09 has a different file concept than iMHD6.
Both versions allow to store Events (=huge files) 'anywhere' to usb or firewire connected, hfs(+) formatted harddrives. the Project files (=small files) can be de-located from 'internal' drive with vers09, for 08 you have to use a socalled symLink to de-locate Project files.

  • Changing Airdrop Default Save Location

    Hello All,
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. Simple question...
There has to be a way to change the default save location of AirDrop. Has anyone stumbled across this?
    ~ lbcSSA

    Hi Jeffrey,
your solution is nice for people who don't care about spoiling their system disk, which I agree must be numerous today.
But would you possibly have another suggestion to avoid documents sent via Airdrop to end up at all on the System disk ? I mean, just as one can do it for the Safari or Mail downloads, where you can define a default folder located on a different hard disk ? I'm with a MacPro, and System disk is intended only for... system, not files, so to avoid fragmentations issues from multiple erase actions of unnecessary files.
Is it possible that Apple writes "default folder" and forgot that "default" means one can opt for an alternative solution ??? Has Apple gone that un-professional ? Please tell me I've just missed a line somewhere... and that I don't have to rely once more on a third party app...
    Cheers !

  • SBS 2011 GPO for changing the default save location for Word/Excel 2013 not working

So this is a strange one. I've got an SBS 2011 server that's the only domain controller in the org. I've created a GPO to change the default save location for Excel 2013 and Word 2013 using the Office 2013 ADMX files which were installed to the PolicyDefinitions
    folder.
The GPO (U-Office2013 Default Save Location) only contains:
    1. User Configuration - Microsoft Excel 2013/Excel Options/Save - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
    2. User Configuration - Microsoft Word 2013/Word Options/Advanced/File Locations - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
The GPO is linked at the OU that contains my users for my SBS organization.
When I do a gpupdate /force on a windows 7 system with office2013 installed, and then run a gpresult/rsop, the policy appears to be applied successfully as it lists my GPO under the Applied GPOs list on the workstation:
    Applied GPOs
Default Domain Policy dyndns.local AD (24), Sysvol (24)
    U-Office2013 Default Save Location domain.local/SBSusers AD (6), Sysvol (6)
In the gpresult report, the applied settings appear under:
    Administrative Templates
    Extra Registry Settings
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\excel\options\defaultpath Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\doc-path Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
BUT, when I go to the workstation, and check office->options-Save-default file path, the path has not been changed to what the GPO is pushing.
The strange thing is that in my test environment running 2008R2 server and Win7 with Office 2013 and identical settings the default save location is applied and works as expected.
    Any ideas?
I've already tried re-installing the ADMX templates and re-created the GPO's several times.
I should also note that other GPO's on the SBS2011 server such as the folder redirection GPO work as expected on the same windows 7 system. It just appears to be an issue with the default save location in office2013 and other Office 2013 related GPOs which
utilize the recently added ADMX template that don't seem to be working for me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Justin,
Thanks for your reply. I have tried several different user accounts (all have local admin privileges to the workstation) with the same issue. The default save path does not get applied from the GPO to any of the users i've tried. Here's the steps I took
    per your suggestion:
    1. log on as a user who has never logged onto the workstation before.
    2. run gpupdate /force (entered y for yes when prompted to log off).
    3. Log back in as the user and open Office and check the default save path. It has not been changed to match the GPO setting.
    4. Check rsop to see if the policy was applied. Rsop states the gpo was applied successfully.
I have attached the gpsvc.log file from a the session described above. The GPO Guid in question is: {DC3C93EC-7C28-48E9-BA38-FCA1E275A207}. Its common name is: U-Word 2013 Default Save Location. It's only setting is:

  • How to integrate bing map for including or displaying multiple locations at the same time

how to integrate bing map for including or displaying multiple locations at the same time

Have you aware of the geolocation field that's been introduced with SharePoint 2013?  You can store location data within a list and then integrate this within Bing.  The second tutorial on this Bing team blog will show it well.

  • Adobe Reader X save location issue

Hi All, i would like to seek expert helps on Adobe Reader save location issues. After we upgrade from Adobe Reader 9 to Adobe Reader X.
There are changes on how save location works in Adobe Reader X
If save PDF via Internet Explorer – the save location will according to last save location, HOWEVER
If save PDF via Adobe Reader X – the save location will set according to location the file is being open
Let me show you what i mean over the pictures
I open a reader_X_help.pdf using Adobe Reader X and then save the file using Ctrl+Shift+S at: C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save
    refer my last save location.jpg
Now i want to save another new file back to C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save, I open the file Adobe file2.pdf located at desktop and when i do Ctrl+Shift+S, the location point to my desktop and not C:\Users\xxxx\Documents\My last location save
refer my last save location change to desktop.jpg
I have tested this features in Adobe Reader 9 and it's different whereby it's will point according to my last location save.
There is no issue with computer as i have 3 machine running different enviroment, Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Enterprise, and all using same version of Adobe Reader X version 10.0.1.
    So my questions & concern:
Is there any way to change the save location features same as Adobe Reader 9?
If YES, how to do it? By Computer Changes or Adobe Reader X packages modification using Adobe Customization tools?
If NO, Where can i find this source of documentation stated about this new changes so i can publish this information in HP website as new design changes to avoid complaint or negative feedback.
Looking forward for expert reply as soon.
Thank you very much and Have a great day.
    Best Regards

    Solved it!
    1-go to "edit", select Preferences.
2-select from the left pane: Security (enhanced)
3-click on "add folder path" button just below the big white box
4-pick a folder of your choice and click "ok". (your selected folder path will appear in that white box above the "add folder path" button in step 3)
5-if you want to add additional folders, just repeat steps 3 & 4
6-once you are done, click "ok" on the preferences screen and click "ok" again to accept the changes.
Yes, it seems illogical, but it worked.
I tested by closing the Reader (X), then surfed the web and did what Neher5 was explaining he/she wanted to do just after opening a pdf from a website and lo-and-behold,  it worked!. No more "save to temp folder" issues.
    Hope this helps.
