IPhoto 'quit unexpectedly' and an entire recent import disappeared

About an hour ago, I imported around 100 photos from a boat trip this morning from my camera onto iPhoto. They imported quickly, as per usual, and I selected the option to delete the photos on the camera, having had no issues with iPhoto so far this holiday. I looked through them all and even edited a few.
The next time I opened my laptop (about a minute ago), a slideshow of the recent photos began running, which was strange as my laptop was locked. I pressed esc a few times until the password interface came up and then logged in. A error message came up saying iPhoto had quit unexpectedly, I pressed ignore and then reopened it. I noticed an empty event from today (18th April) and after checking quickly, realised all the photos I had just imported had completely disappeared. I checked the iPhoto trash, and they weren't there, and my laptop trash (no surprises, they weren't there either). It was basically like I had never imported them, apart from the empty event.
This really *****, because I don't have any back ups and there were some really great pictures in there. Is there any way I can recover them?

I selected the option to delete the photos on the camera
As you know now never have iPhoto delete the photos.  Do it in the camera by reformatting the memeory card after you've verified the photos are in the library and can be viewed and edited OK.
That being said apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the above doesn't do the trick, you have a camera with a memory card (not a smart phone) and you haven't used the camera since then and haven't reformatted the memory card with the camera you can use  MediaRECOVER to recover the photos from the card.  You can use it in demo mode to verify it an recover the photos you're interested in before you purchase it.

After recently importing photos from my memory card into iPhoto I opted to erase pictures from memory stick because of limited space. • Iphoto quit unexpectedly and I lost all the pictures I downloaded

Iphoto quit unexpectedly and I lost all of the pictures I had downloaded and one I edited.
    They were all gone
I had just did the major update that morning
Has anyone else been experiencing problems like this?

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • IPhoto quits unexpectedly and does not allow me to update

When I open iPhoto, I am prompted to upgrade: "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto." Before I even have the opportunity to click Upgrade, the application quits: "The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly." When I click Relaunch, I receive the upgrade message again and the program quits again.
I have already repaired the permissions using Disk Utility and deleted the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from my Preferences folder per the instructions I found to resolve this problem on another site, but that did nothing.
    Thanks for your help.

Someone else found that this works
Launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and create a new library - then launch iPhoto again while depressing the option (alt) key and switch back to your original library - this has apparently worked for some people

  • Iphoto quit unexpectedly and can't communicate with safari

all of a sudden when I go to iphoto I get the spinning rainbow wheel then a message says iphoto quit unexpectedly code x86.  at one point it also said that iphot could not communicate with safari.  help!!

I'm having the same problem with FCP not opening.  It keeps quitting unexpectedly during startup, while loading video effects (exact one varies).
I've already reinstalled the suite (if you're using Lion you'll need Rosetta, which is included as an extra install on a snow leopard disc if you have one.  If not, you can always buy one via amazon or other such store)
I've deleted my preferences, and repaired disk permissions multiple times.
I've also deleted any third-party plugins (fxfactory, etc) that I had installed, and still nothing.
The rest of the suite opens fine, it's only Final Cut that quits on opening.

  • I imported some photos to iPhoto from my iPhone.  After it was done, I said it could delete the photos.  iPhoto quit unexpectedly and now the photos aren't on my iPhone or iPhoto.  Help!

These were pictures of my honemoon and I'm desperate to get them back!

All I am trying to do is find something on a forum board or article etc stating that the the date showing in iphoto could be the date it was imported or synced or sent to me and not the actual date taken.
The date on the photo could be anything because you can edit the date with iPhoto or any of 100 apps, free and paid for. So, the date on the photo will prove nothing, I'm afraid.

  • IPhoto quit unexpectedly and now it won't open

I just had to have my OS erased and rewritten on my Macbook Pro at the genius bar yesterday, so today I am restoring all of my files and settings.  I figured out how to open up iPhoto, and while I was backing up the pictures on an external hard drive (just to be sure!), it quit unexpectedly.  The next time I tried to open up iPhoto, the library seemed to have disappeared from my mac, I found the iPhoto app in a really strange location, and when I try to open it, it says that I need to update to the newest version of iPhoto, and when I launch the upgrade, it says: "Unable to write to library 'iPhoto Library" Check that you have permission to write to the library directory. From there the only option is to click "Cancel" and iPhoto shuts down immediately.
I have tried to open the application using the Control + Option method, and have tried to perform every repair & rewrite in the menu, but every time it tells me that I am having permission errors.
    Any advice?

I had the whole library backed up, that's how I was able to open it to begin with, but then once it closed unexpectedly, opening that library just sends me back to the slieu of error messages... I also have the actual photos backed up though, if I could just get iPhoto to open.  It seems like my mail is quitting unexpectedly too...I may need to just bring it back to the Genius bar...

  • IPhoto quits unexpectedly and won't let me access photos

My iPhoto program has just started acting oddly; when I hook up a camera or my iPhone, it won't start up; just quits. And if I start it up from the computer, as soon as I click on a photo or album title or caption, it quits. I am using the latest version of iPhoto, 8.1.2
Coincidentally, my Safari is also problematic; any time I access a page with requiring a password it quits if the "prefill" option is used. Firefox works fine. Help!

Try this basic fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

  • Iphoto shuts down immediately upon opening.  It goes to the last picture that I was viewing and then errors out.  I get the message that "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" and then get to Ignore, Report, or Reopen.  Nothing has been successful.

What can I do to correct the problem with iPhoto closing immediately without loosing my photos?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • IPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.

iPhoto is quitting unexpectedly and losing the photos I just imported and edited.  Any suggestions to fix it?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto quits unexpectedly when importing

I have recently purchased an iMac.
All I want is to get my library of around 4000 pictures onto my iPhoto, from what was previously my PC.
I copied my old 'My Pictures' folder to the iMac, it's on the desktop. I have tried going File > Import in iPhoto and selecting the folder, and I've tried individually.
Some photos import but usually it doesn't get far before it stops on import then the whole app quits and says its closed unexpectedly. Why does it do this?
Then when I reopen, it says 350 photos have been found in the library folder that are not imported. Would I like to import them? So, okay, YES, and then it crashes again.
    The error I get is:
"The application iPhoto quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected."
    And:

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There was another poster with exactly the same crash earlier this week and we tracked it down to a number of 0kb .avi files in the folders he was importing from.
So do you have any avi files in there?

I was working with iPhoto downloading pictures
Do you mean importing photos? If so what were you importing from? If it is a flash drive why not just re-import from it? Where did you scan them?
As to backups - you really need to always have your backup running - without good backups you will lose all photos sooner or later
