IPhoto Quits when emptying trash?
I have recently updated computers and when I imported (I think through the assistant) I ended up with literally like 10 times the number of pics I should have.
After deleting about 58,000 of them by hand, I can not get the iphoto trash to empty, iPhoto starts the process but then "unexpectedly quits" without deleting any of the pics. I am guessing the number of pics has something to do with this but I am not sure. Any ideas?
NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work and you end up with massive duplication
If you still have the old library it is best to start over - Drag the bad iPhoto library to the desktop, Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.
Also note for the future migration assistance does not work well with the iPhoto library either - just dragging it over is the only real way to do it

I have about 1,100 photos in the trash, and when I choose Empty Trash, the app either freezes on the OK/Cancel sheet, or it unexpectedly quits.
What can I do? Thanks for any advice.I am having the same problem. I have 767 images in the trash that i want to delete. I cant move them out and delete a few at a time, the only choice you get is to restore to original location, it would take a life time to refind them all. too bad it wont let you drag them to a new album and then you could maybe delete 50 at a time.
i am stuck. i need the space and i want them deleted, but iPhoto crashes every time i try. i did the new thumbs (or whatever it is called, cant see thread on this screen.)
i hope someone from Apple answers how to empty trash. -

iPhoto 7.1 chronically crashes when emptying trash ..............any thoughts ? I have reinstalled and thrown out the com.iphoto.plist more than once but it still happens.

In that case try the following;
Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .

It may be a bad preference file other than iPhoto's.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. IPhoto quits when I press info.
IPhoto quits when I press info. Some recent photos taken in Iphoto no longer appears when I connect my iPhone. These albums / events are in Itunes appear empty even though photos are in it.

When emptying trash I get error code -8003. When I get this error I am trying to delete downloaded softeare. Typical file deletion works okay.

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '11,ver. 9.3.1.
I have a MacBook Pro running 10.7.4.
Previously I had no issues sending emails with iPhotos via my mail application. Now I can't email out of iPhoto or out of mail. iPhoto just quits. There are no error messages.
I have started a new iPhoto library separate from my original library. Still quits.
I have opened a new account for start-up, still quits.
Any suggustions will be appreciated.

Imac restarts when emptying trash
For some reason, my Mac always restarts when emptying trash. All apps closed on last couple attempt. Trash still not emptied. Trying to clean up my files, but it appears I will have to reformat in order to clear clutter. Any suggestions?

IPhoto won't quit! Empty trash with 8000 +....
Cleaned up iPhoto, deleting, now have 8000+ images in iPhoto trash. Click iPhoto Trash>Empty Trash, and separate upper right "Empty Trash" button... neither one will dump all these photos.... And the program freezes with swirling after the box shows it is emptying iPhoto trash.... NOT. Please help, after many tries this is becoming ugly.

I've been using iPhoto for many years. I've been using a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo 2007 era iMac the whole time. I'm now using iPhoto v8.1.2.
My iPhoto library is now quite large with about 40,000 photos and about 175 G in total size. I have put a lot of time into organizing the photos. Everything is religiously backed up.
Over the past year or so the performance of iPhoto in terms of speed has been slowly declining. It takes a long time to open, but the most cumbersome is the spinning beach ball when I "commit" to enhancements to a photo I've made (contrast, saturation, sharpness etc). Recently that beach ball could actually take 3-5 minutes. I find this intolerable.
So I started researching this to see if others have the problem. As best I can make out after a few hours of research is that my library is too large and my computer too old. I don't want to replace my computer becuase of iPhoto so I started researching the idea of splitting my library into smaller libraries.
I found several 3rd party programs (iPhoto Buddy, iPhoto Library Manager) that made it seem they may be able to help me easily split my library into several libraries. Unfortunately neither actually does this but instead tells you how you need to do that manually.
The methods to split your library manually they suggest are horrendously tedious for a 40,000 photo library with over 1,000 carefully constructed Events.
And this brings me to where I stand today. I copy my entire library to an external hard drive, open the copied library and what I WANT to do is prune it to say 1/10 of the size (say two years of my photos). (Realize I'll have to do this process of copying my entire library 10 times, and pruning each time.)
But then I find out that iPhoto totally chokes when you try to trash more than "80-100" photos at a time! Morever, I come to find out that emptying the trash of even 80 photos takes 3-5 minutes!
Although I appreciate the help and advice, perhaps you can understand my frustration with Apple. I'm literally an indentured servant to iPhoto if I want to preserve all the work I've done on my library. I'd switch to another program if it would preserve all my events but I can not find one that does.
1. The performance of their software declines with no warning to the point where it can't be used unless you're unemployed and have nothing else to do.
2. You look for a fix and find you have to split your library.
3. When you try to split your library you find it will takes days and days of tedious work to complete.
So that is my story. That is why I'm so angry with Apple.
Have I missed anything or am I doomed to this dreary work?

IPhoto 6 Still Crashing when Emptying Trash
Even after following Apple's advice to rebuild this and rebuild that and reinstall and delete preferences, etc., etc., iPhoto crashes when trying to empty trash of certain files, especially those imported with previous versions of iPhoto. Never have a problem with files imported using ver 6. I now have many files with no images, the file names.
Apple, this can't just be happening to me.

Iphoto crashing on empty trash, reopen and the trash is still full...
i've got about 6000 pics in my trash in iphoto, and when i tell it to empty the trash, it hangs, and then unexpectedly quits. when i reopen it the trashed photos are still there and it asks me to rebuild the thumbnail cache.
i'm trying to trim the fat off my system so i can do a back up. as i'm about to blank my system drive and start fresh. any other iphoto friendly back up tips would be nice, i've got about 15000 pics, and making dvds or exporting everything is a massive chore.
also, have i lost my marbles or is there no longer a search function in the forums?austin m
I'm happy to report that your marbles are reasonably intact: the search of the fora has been turned off because the iPhone users, apparently a slow bunch, are overloading the system and this is one of the measures to keep the system flowing until they surge passes.
No, not an especially bright solution, I agree.
Anyway... Go to iPhoto -> Preferences -> General and uncheck 'Show Item Counts'. This often helps with this trashing crash.
Otherwise, the workaround is to restore the pics to you library and trash them in smaller groups.

Iphoto quits when trying to import from ipad
Just got an iPad - trying to download photos and small videos to the iMac so that I have more space on the iPad. Whenever I try to import all the photos, etc. from the iPad, iPhoto quits unexpectedly after a few minutes. When I re-open iPhoto on the iMac, I always get a prompt "we found 1874 photos in the iPhoto Library that were not imported, would you like to import them now?" Same problem occurs, then more photos listed on the prompt the next time... Any suggestions? (My OS is Snow Leopard, if that helps...?) I just updated from Tiger to Snow Leopard, but the iPhoto problem has carried over...
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder. -
IMac-iPhoto-can not empty trash
I have 1000's of images in iphoto that I'm trying to get rid of.
As soon as I click on empty trash the swirling circle comes on and I can not do anything in iphoto, each time I have to force quit.
I cannot figure out how to fix this, can someone suggest what to do.

TraceyTry openeing the Trash and removing half of the photos, put them on your desktop, and then try to empty Trash again. You may simply have too many in it for it to be able to function.

Error code when emptying trash
I'm getting the following message when I try to empty the trash:
The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "" could not be read or written. (Error code -36)
I've tried Secure empty trash and "option" empty trash and nothing seems to work? Work should I do?

won't go away, yeah, the names are gone, but the disk space they are sitting on is locked up
tight as fort knox. You see, time machine places special ACL permissions on all its backup
files. If these ACL's are not removed before deleting the files, the visible name is the only thing
that gets deleted, the file map does not get removed, so the OS still "sees" the space as allocated
even though you can't see anything.
Back up your data, reformat (erase) and restore.
Next time let time machine remove its own backups.

System sound (like when empty trash) miserably stop working in Lion 10.7.2
I have upgraded to Lion10.7.2 on my Macbook Pro early 2008 Intel 15 inches, and the update went fine except one annoying problem I found so far.
This problem also occurred in 10.7.0 and 10.7.1 and it seems that no fix has been made in 10.7.2
The problem is when I drag file to Trash and empty it, there should be trash empty sound effect, and this has been with us since Tiger.
In 10.7.2 it work as expected, but when I close the lid to get it to sleep, once I open the lid, the system sound is gone without no reason.
When I play music from iTunes, or when I change volume level, the sound effects work as usual, but empty trash sound stop working miserable.
I have to shut down, press Option-Command-P-R and power on to reset PRAM then system sound like empty trash come back. Again, afpr may be half a day, it's gone again
Any friend here has solution for this? The com.apple.soundprefs.plist file, if you delete it, in Lion, it is not recreated again, and it's gone forever. SO delete plist file is not a solution.
Help pleaseI found a workaround to my problem accidentally.
As the system sound like empty trash or file drag sound stop working miserably, after close the MBP lid to sleep, after it awake, system sound just stop working.
Before this, I have to shut down my MBP, reset PRAM by press Option-Control-P-R and power on, to get the system sound back
But I found that the workaround whenever the system sound stop working thad do not require reboot is:
1. Go to System Preference-Sound
2. Change Play sound effects through: Internal Speakers to Soundflower 2ch) in the drop down list.
(Soundflower has been installed by a software called iShowU HD (screen capturing software))
3. Slide to change Alert Volume from the original position
4. Switch back to Internal Speakers from Soundflower 92ch) in the drop down list
5. Change Alert Volume by moving slide bar back to the desirable position
Immediately, the sound effects that stop working will start working again.
This just work for my case. I don't know it will work for ther people that have the same problem as me or not.
And if possible, can some expert here give me explanation why doing the above make system sound effect to work again? mI want to know the cause, and definite solution to the problem

Error code -8003 when emptying trash; underlying problem?
I am continually getting this error message when trying to empty the trash:
"The operation couldn't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)"
I have searched the forums and have picked up on ways to ovecome this - I use Onyx or TrashIt to empty the trash, but the issue comes back very soon, often the same day. Would like find an fix the underlying problem.
I have done some testing and think I know at least part of the problem. I use the MacUpdate program to find and download updates to the programs on my Mac, and I also use AppTrap to delete files associated with applications that I am deleting. When MacUpdate updates an app it throws the old one in the trash, and AppTrap asks if I want to keep or trash preferences, and I of course choose keep. I have noted that the empty trash problem seems to occur after automatic updates - not after everyone one, but it has NEVER occured without something being in the trash that got sent there by MacUpdate.
I took everything out of the trash and deleted things one by one, even opening packages, and found at least one item that wouldn't delete, a version of Carbon Copy Cloner that was updated by MacUpdate. I checked and it was not locked, and I had Read Write permission. I found another file that would generate teh -8300 error; when I clicked the lock pad and entered my password, it would then delete. But other files that have the padlock locked will delete, but it seems at least some programs updated by MacUpdate won't delete unless you unlock the file.
Do any other of the people on this forum who have experienced the -8300 error also us MacUpdate? I know that some people get this error from deleting files from their Time Machine backup, but that is not my situation.Start with http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html
