IPhoto Raw & Jpeg upload question

So I have begun photography recently, and am relatively interested in photography. I use a RAW + jpeg method so I can keep both raws to process and photoshop, but also the jpeg counterpart for easier sorting. Is there a way that I can configure iPhoto to split the import by file type? As I have to do this manually (with dual copies of each, in different file formats and composed differently, of course)

Set PS as your external editor for iPhoto and import into iPhoto - it creates a JPEG for display
iPhoto can find your photos in a snap if you keyword them and add faces and places

  • RAW+JPEG Import Question

    I switched from Windows/LR to Mac/Aperture last year and have a question about importing RAW and JPEG files.
    My camera (Olympus EM5) finally has RAW support and I have been shooting RAW+JPEG. I got a preset that I like to apply to the RAW files during the import. But I don't want the preset applied to the JPEG files. What I have been doing is importing the RAW and JPEG separately.
    Is there a way to import them all together and have the preset only applied to the RAW files on import? Thanks.

    What import settings have you tried? What configuration do you want the library to have (Both RAW + JPGs as separate masters or only one of them as master?).
    If you want the RAW as master try importing as Both (RAW as master) to see if the preset is only applied to the RAW.
    If you want both as masters, that is you're importing Both (Separate masters) then I don;t believe it will be possible to restrict the preset to just the RAWs on import. But instead of importing the images in two separate batches it might be easier to import both and to apply the preset after import using Metadata->Batch Change. It would be easy to filter just the RAW images to apply the preset to.

  • IPhoto '11 and RAW/JPEG handling (good/bad) ?

    I've upgraded to iPhoto '11 and discovered (don't know if it's a new feature) that iPhoto handles RAW extremely well. I can view RAW files and edit etc in a smooth manner - which is great.
    Actually it's so great that i've started shooting photos in RAW only (so i don't get duplicates in iPhoto when importing RAW/JPEG) - but is it a good idea to shoot/import RAW in iPhoto only? (and skip the JPEG file).
    If it's better to shoot/import both RAW and JPEG, how do you guys handle the identical pictures (RAW/JPEG) in iPhoto?
    Finally, if i only have RAW in iPhoto, how do i 'export' the RAW picture? If i drag and drop the picture to desktop, RAW is automatically converted to JPEG (which is great in 99% of the times).
    Hope to hear some of you guys ideas regarding this subject.

    When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
    Shooting in Raw+Jpeg is a bit pointless as you have this automatic preview anyway.
    if i only have RAW in iPhoto, how do i 'export' the RAW picture?
    File -> Export and set the Kind to Original
    Dragging to the Desktop accesses only the latest version of the photo.

    How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
    Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?

    While playing with the import features I imported both RAW and JPEG for a project. I normally shoot only RAW but shot RAW+JPEG for this test. Is there a way to remove just the JPEG references from the Aperture Library? Or does the Aperture library only look at one image. So it’s either RAW or JPEG that the library is referencing?

    If I understand your post correctly, there is an easier way.
    When you import raw+jpeg into Ap, Ap Lib will contain both files but you only see the raw version by default. There is a simple option to to show both files in your Ap Lib. Sorry but I cannot recall where the option is (I don't do this so I've forgotten, but little search here should give you an answer quickly).
    That said, the easiest is to view jpeg directly from your card or dump the card content into a temp folder before you import into Ap. I do this with raw file because I do not keep all the image on the card. In my case, I use ViewNX (Nikon) to quickly go through the images and delete unwanted images, then import the rest into Ap Lib (I use referenced master files so I also move the file into my permanent storage location before bringing into Ap environment).

  • Import RAW+JPEG to different folders

    I have been playing around and can't find the answer I need, please help...
    I shoot photos in RAW+JPEG and, therefore, have two files for each image in folders on my memory cards. I now have AutoImporter set to automatically import all files form the card to a subfolder within Pictures called Auto Import. I would like to add a folder action or script of some sort on Auto Import that would take the JPEGs and move them to a different folder automatically after import (addition to this folder.
    My goal here is to split the RAW from JPEG into separate folders so that I can have Time Machine and iDisk back up just the JPEGs, leaving the RAW only for editing in Aperture.
    I am pretty new to Mac and not very familiar with scripts or folder actions but I can muddle through. I looked around Automator but could not see any action that might work.

    Hopefully, I'm not hijacking this thread but I've been asking friends who use Aperture this question and not getting answers.
    I shoot the NEF (RAW) + JPEG option on my Nikon D300. I used to shoot straight RAW for years but my wife, who is a scrapbooker, was getting annoyed at how difficult it was for her to get JPEG versions of the pictures she wants to print for her projects. I also like to put photo-intensive trip reports up on my blog about our trips to Disney theme parks (my hobby is shooting pictures at Disney Theme parks). I found it a nice side benefit to be able to just grab the JPEG and upload since the quality wasn't as important since it was a small picture anyway.
    Well, after shooting a few TB of pictures, it has gotten IMPOSSIBLE to keep track of my photos using a file structure as my organizational method.
    So, a few of my friends convinced me to go Mac and go Aperture. I haven't installed Aperture yet not imported any photos yet using iPhoto and went straight to the Nikon Transfer software as I tried to determine whether to go Aperture of some other package.
    I've now decided to use Aperture, but I still have the overall problem of what to do with my JPEG + RAW. I want to keep both but with them both imported into the current folder with Nikon Transfer and possibly the same behavior with Aperture doing the importing, that won't work with all those duplicates.
    I know you all were asking the original poster WHY they were wanting both when it's so easy to get a JPEG out of Aperture. So, for me it's just simply because it's easier for my wife to get her pictures if I don't have to teach her how to use the software or I have to stop what I'm doing to export them out for her.
    What suggestions do the experts on here have for the scenerio I face. I really am a clean slate except for the few hundred pictures I imported to free up card space on my last trip in May. But, I now have a stack of card needing importing and need guidance on methodology

  • Movie with stills - settings, raw, jpeg...

    i took some pictures with my Rebel XT at a wedding last weekend and i am trying to create a movie in iMovie with them. i shot everything in raw and uploaded the images to iphoto then imported them to iMovie and created my video. i have exported the finished movie a few different ways and just not happy with the results. im just not sure if i am using the right settings or format for exporting. also, im wondering if there is maybe a problem with using straight raw or if i should export the pictures to jpeg first then import to iMovie.

    I shoot in raw as well and after uploading my photos into iPhoto, I import them to iMovie without converting to jpeg. Through considerable experimentation, I have found that the following two processes work best for creating a DVD:
    1. share movie to Media Browser then to iDVD, save as a disk image, and burn using Disk Utility at the slowest speed possible;
    2. export to desk top (not using Quick Time), drop the .mov project into iDVD and burn from there, either directly or using the disk image>disk utility route.
    Both processes have given me sharp, vivid images. At the moment I am working on a project that is 6 minutes long and growing. I have read in these discussions that iMovie is not meant to handle projects more than 15 minutes long. I will have to wait and see what happens when my project begins to exceed this time limit.

  • Working with Raw Files: Workflow question

    I am seriously a novice and need some advice. I have a Nikon D40x and I'm using Aperture software. I am shooting in raw (nef)+ jpg. I have uploaded the pics via aperture. When I import, a pop-up import menu says RAW + JPEG PAIRS: BOTH (JPG as master).
    No problem here. Now I want to do some "fancy editing" but all I see is the jpg copy. How to I get to the raw (nef) file? And once I do and make changes, do I need to convert it to something else? HOW?
    Any and all advice welcome! (Preferably in layman's terms, though. I'm already overwhelmed by all of the techie jargon).

    My advice:
    Stop wasting your time doing jpg and nefs - just do nefs.
    You also need to read the introduction to Aperture and possibly the Aperture manual if you want to get competent in the use of Aperture. Some of the principles and concepts need to be understood before you can use Aperture effectively - forget about "fancy" - you need "fundamentals" first. Might sound like I"m telling you to suck eggs, but this understanding is really important. Who knows - reading the manual might even answer the question you just asked...

  • Can I delete just the RAW of a RAW+JPEG image from iPad

    I just started using Photosmith 2 to integrate with Lightroom, and I think it will fit nicely in my workflow. I am importing images on the iPad with the Camera Connection Kit, sorting in Photosmith 2, and syncing with LIghtroom. The final step is to delete the imported RAW images from the iPad. However, there are some photos that I would like to keep on the iPad once they are sorted. Keeping the RAW image will take up too much room. If I shoot as RAW+JPEG is there a way (without using iPhoto) to delete just the RAW version? I read online that Image Capture should show both versions of the image, but it is only showing the JPEG. I am using Lion v 10.7.4.

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    No. That's an Alias to your latest backup. You'll want to keep the actual latest backup. But *DO NOT* delete (or change or move) anything of TM's via the Finder. You can hopelessly choke your Mac and corrupt your remaining backups.
    Use the procedure in item #12 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum. It's rather tedious and time-consuming, as you must delete them one at a time, but anything else is a recipe for disaster.

  • Aperture Raw & Jpeg import Problem

    I'm on the current Aperture and face the following situation: I have a memory card containing photos shot partly as jpeg-only and partly as jpeg&raw.
    No problem one should think since Aperture has the option to only import either raw or jpeg if there are more than one format per photo. Unfortunately, that is not working. If you select raw only, which I do for the raw&jpeg photos, Aperture does not import Photos which only have a jpeg-version at all.
    This is not consistent with the options name and at all renders the whole import options useless in my case.
    Am I missing something or is Aperture having an issue here?

    I shot raw and jpeg since I was on a trip through the US and my Macbook broke so I had to use my iPad to upload the photos to my blog. Unfortunately the iPad software (iPhoto etc.) does not allow to change the resolution and with that the filesize of the photos. Uploading of hundreds of photos of more than 2 mb over public wifis on campgrounds etc is simply not possible, so I used the following workaround: Set raw+minimum jpeg size as file format and upload the small jpegs to the blog while keeping the raw on the memory card for later use.
    That's why I shot both raw and jpeg and why I have photos shot as jpeg or raw only (before the laptop crash) and both raw and jpeg (after the crash) on the same memory card.
    I'm Aperture user from the the very first version (when it was like hundreds of Euros), and I sadly cannot say that I'm surprised of the lack of support for non-standard workflows.

  • Raw & Jpeg import into LR3.3

    Hi,
    Just upgraded to LR3.3; I can now import RAW files from my Sony A33.  I shot the images using the RAW & JPEG setting.  The import was sucessful and the file extensions on the image shows ARW & JPEG.  My question is, how can I access the images separately; the RAW and the JPEG.  In IPhoto the images show up separately.  I'm a newbie to LR; any help appreciated.

    If you have "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" checked in your preferences, LR will import ARW and JPEG completely seperately and you can access (and work on) both of them. But there won't be any automatic synchronization of metadata and such.
    If you have this option not checked, the JPEGs are only imported as so called "Sidecar Files", which you cannot look at or access for development.

  • "Error while relocating" after deleting RAW from RAW+JPEG pairs (Important FYI)

    This is not a question, but something I recently discovered that I think will be important for the Aperture community.
    Not too long ago, I asked a question about how to remove the RAW files from RAW+JPEG pairs. The concensus was that it couldn't be done through Aperture, but that one could delete them through the Finder. The answer I got (and that has popped up in other threads on similar topics) was "it's probably not wise, but as far as I know, it won't have an adverse effect." I don't think any response along these lines has been able to point to a specific problem that can arise from such a "hack." Well, I found one today...
    It appears that if a user uses Finder to "break" RAW+JPEG pairs by deleting the RAW file and leaving the JPEG (and I assume this goes for deleting the reverse), Aperture will NOT be able to "Relocate Originals..." Instead, "Aperture will return the error: Error while relocating (File not Found): "(null)". I ran into this error the other day while trying to change my file structure by relocating all files. I regularly ran into this error, and it was only after some extensive that I was able to narrow it down 100% of the time to the RAW+JPEG pairs I had "broken." I haven't encounterd any other adverse behavior from "breaking" these file pairings, but this one, at least, could be serious.
    So, for future reference, I think the response by the Aperture community when someone asks "How do I delete the RAW file from RAW+JPEG" pairs, should be "Use Finder if you must, but please note Aperture will not be able to 'Relocate Originals..
    PS This should NOT be understood as a criticism of those who have responded to this question in the past. There's obviously no way to know about these little quirks until one of us stumbles across them. I hope this information will be helpful going forward, both as a caution when deleting one of the pair, and as a possible answer for the "Error while relocating" message.
    PPS I don't think I ran across an explanation for this when I originally searched for the error message bolded above.
    If someone has already provided this information, my apologies.

    This comes from the critical mistake on my part of not making clear that I was paraphrasing multiple responses rather than saying "Bob told on a Monday that i should..."     In this respect, I think you've misunderstood me. At the time I made this post, I still was not seeing a direct connection between deleting files in Finder and adverse consequences in Aperture (or perhaps I should say my searches did not turn up such a connection). As such, I made this post to provide the community with clear evidence of why one should not delete one-of-a-pair files in Finder. Again, I may have simply missed the thread that detailed that to do so would result in a null error when relocating Masters. That said, in July 2013 I had been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I was getting the null error and I did not see a thread that asked "have you deleted files in Finder" as a way to troubleshoot.
    Hopefully, I've cleared up any confusion now. To bring this all back around to my original point for the thread, I intended it to (1) offer a more direct way to troubleshoot the null error on relocating Masters, and (2) to offer a cautionary tale for those who choose to delete one of the RAW+JPEG pair in Finder.   • Import of RAW+JPEG pairs?

    Just when I thought I had it all together...I seem to have forgotten where I put it. I need some expert assistance.
    Aperture manages my Library which is kept on an external HD.
    I shoot RAW+JPEG on my D200--two image files for every shot. To anticipate the question--I'm learning about the D200, and I want to be able to see the IQ differences between an Aperture-adjusted RAW image and a D200-adjusted jpeg.
    I understood that when I imported my image files into Aperture, both files of the pair were imported and saved in my Library. I know I was working with the RAW file for all my adjustments and exports, but I believed that if I wanted that camera-adjusted jpeg, it was available from my Library. I'd also understood that I could call up that camera-adjusted jpeg using Option+J while selecting the paired RAW image in the Viewer. I know I can get a jpeg counterpart to the highlighted RAW image using Option+J--but whether it is generated by Aperture or camera is now uncertain.
    Can someone who knows answer the following:
    (1) Are both images in the shot pair (.nef and .jpg) imported into Aperture?
    (2) If the Option+J image is not the downloaded, camera-produced image--then where does the resulting jpeg file which appears come from, and where are the adjustments for it set?
    (3) If my original understanding is correct and both images in the pair were loaded into my Library--why can't I find the paired jpeg? It's not listed with the RAW files in my Finder, and my Spotlight doesn't find it either.
    (4) Is there a way to get that paired jpeg into my Library along with its RAW counterpart.
    One note on backup workflow: If those paired jpegs aren't imported into the Library, I'm fortunate to have followed advice from some of you here in the forum. Thanks to you, I always download my files using a reader and save them to a folder on my desktop. After importing them into Aperture from that folder, I move them to a folder I use to accumulate a batch for burning to a DVD for archiving. Only when burnt, do I erase them from the desktop and reformat my card. If, in fact, I've been wrong about those paired jpegs being in my Library, then I've still got them on my DVDs. Instead of being redundant with my Vaults, the DVDs will be my only source for them. Thanks to those of you who got me to buy into that workflow.

    Thanks. A little Tough Love from the experts sent me back to try one more time to puzzle through the pages of posts on this subject. Sorry, but there's too much noise and contradiction in those pages of posts for me to buy in.
    I did what each of us probably should do--an experiment. I noted the "New Version from Master JPEG" aka Option+J was grayed out if only one of the pair (either .nef or .jpg) was imported. Only having the pair imported activated thet Option+J pick. Excellent, and just what I hoped to see.
    I also drilled down to the lowest level of the imported image folders in the Library. I'd previously stopped when I saw the image name but for some reason neglected to open the lowest folder to check for file extensions. Careless on my part. I confirmed what everyone here is regularly assured--that all the imported image files are available in the Library (and Vaults) should Aperture fail, or someone decide to leave Aperture for the dark side. Again, just what I hoped to see.

  • IPhoto Raw Workflow

    I have been experimenting with shooting in raw and am now trying to figure out how best to work with the files. I've always found iPhoto 11 to be sufficient for organizing my photo library (~50K images), while occasionally using Photoshop Elements to adjust or clean up specific images and create panoramas.
    As I understand it, the raw file appears in iPhoto as both a raw file and a tiff that is used for display (in addition to the separate jpg created by the camera). When editing the raw file, it seems that the changes are saved in a tif that is *much* larger than the original (10mb ->100 mb). When I have tried to use Photoshop Elements to edit the raw files, there are more options for working with the file in ACR, but this process seems to create a second raw file on export (_2 appended to the filename) without incorporating the changes, thus requiring the resulting tif (or jpg) file to be re-imported into iPhoto (the resulting tif files do seem to be much smaller, however).
    Working directly in iPhoto is much easier, but those large file sizes add up and my hard drive space is running low. Reimporting photos into iPhoto is cumbersome, but would seem to save space. Especially if I can then delete the duplicated raw file, which doesn't seem to have any purpose (as I understand it, I can always go back to the original if I want to try processing it differently). Is there another, better option for working with raw files than either of these imperfect solutions? I could rationalize the price of upgrading to Aperture *if* it would actually solve these problems, but I'm not sure I need if if it doesn't offer some demonstrable advantage.

    No it doesn't.
    If you import a Raw it's copied in and a jpeg preview made of it. There is no tiff involved. If you shoot Raw+Jpeg pairs then you get duplicates. Shooting Raw+Jpeg doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this case.
    When editing the raw file, it seems that the changes are saved in a tif that is *much* larger than the original
    It's only saved as a tiff if you have chosen that option in the iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. Otherwise it's saved as a Jpeg. A tiff - as it's uncompressed - will always be a lot larger. That's in the nature of tiffs.
    When working with Raws and an external editor again there are no tiffs involved unless you choose there to be:
    iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
    First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
    Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
    Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
    Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
    You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
    This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
    So, again, there are no tiffs anywhere in either workflow unless you choose to make them.

  • Need more information regarding RAW JPEG pairs

    I understand the importing of RAW+JPEG pair options. What I am having difficulty finding in any forum or user manual is the workflow using such pairs after the import.
    If I import a R+J pair with RAW as original, there is an "R" icon in the viewer on that photo. Is the image displayed (version 1) Aperture's rendering of the RAW file? Or is it the JPEG that goes along with it? If I wanted to compare the JPEG to the RAW, how would I do that? If I created a new version from the original and then compared version 1 and version 2, what would I be looking at?

    My first question is why are you using a Raw&JPG pair workflow? In my experience it is very rarely needed and adds a lot of complexity to the setup.
    Now to answer your questions:
    The image displayed in the viewer is always a full resolution interpretation of the current master. If the raw file is the master then the image is based on it. If the JPG is master then the image in the viewer is based on it.
    There is no direct way to compare one master to the other master. Only one master can be viewed at a time. However versions made off of one of the masters will always be made off that master.
    So if the Raw is the current master and you create a version from it that version is based on the Raw master. Now if you select the JPG to be current master a version is made off of it and the other version you created is still based on the  Raw master.
    You can prove this to yourself by looking at the filename of each. When you select the version made from the Raw the filename extension will show the Raw extension for your camera. When you select the JPG the filename extension will end in jpg.
    So now on to how to compare the images side by side:
    For whichever type is the current master select it and do a Photos->New Version from Master. Remember a version made from a master, before any adjustments are made to the version, will be identical to the master.
    Now switch masters. A version is created from this master and again as no adjustments were applied to it will look exactly  like the master.
    These two images are then the Raw and the JPG side-by-side.
