IPhoto - RAWs - PSE3

Well hey there, one problem solved another rears it's ugly head.
Now, what I would like to do is establish a decent raw workflow but first must figure out what to do with my library. It's a mixture of Jpeg and Raw files that I previously installed into iPhoto. Ideally I would like to remove just the Raws (easily identifiable) and send them through a 3rd party converter (C1Le) > PSE3 if required > save Jpegs to iPhoto. Is there an easy way to do this without deleting all Raws currently (I do have backups) and sending iPhoto nuts? I believe OSX does not have the facility to have converted them in the first place and as such don't want to end up with dublicates but retrospectivly use my own converter. Point is, I don't want to end up with a corrupted modified folder as they will all be reimported after adjustments. Would I be better of to just delete them, import into C1Le through my backup CD > convert > PSE3 > back into iPhoto as a fresh Jpeg.
Once this is achieved, I will probably just have a dedicated folder sitting on the desktop where all raws can be stored (using image capture) to await import into a raw converter. But for know............
Thanks all.
PS Of course, Aperture would be ideal for what I want to do but we can't afford it and my wife really likes iPhotos integration with other apps. Besides, who knows at what speed it will run at on a X600XT !!!!!!!!!!?

argento:
I don't use RAW but are they stored in the Originals folder like the original jpgs are? If so, just copy the Originals folder to the desktop and run your conversion software on the RAW's there. If there are jpgs in there also you can remove them via the Finder before running the convertor. Then delete the raw files from within iPhoto and import the converted jpg versions from the Desktop.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

how do I import iPhoto raw (NEF) files into Lightroom 3.6?

You will need an application that can convert those pcd files into one that iPhoto supports, mainly jpeg. GraphicConverter is supposed to support many, many formats and might just support the pcd. If so you could use it to convert them to jpegs.
There's an automator workflow that I've put into an application that will take many image files and convert them into jpeg with the RGB color profile. I've never tried it on the Kodak files but you can give it a try. It's called +*Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile*+ and can be downloaded from Toad's Cellar. Make a copy of a couple of files and see if it will work. If so then you can batch convert folders of the files at once by dragging them onto the application.
I believe GC can do batch conversions but am not familiar with the application.

  • Issues with NAS, iPhoto, RAW file format, AEBSn, Leopard

I think I've isolated it down to a networking stack issue with Leopard, but I was hoping I could get some more thoughts/advice. I don't want to downgrade to Tiger, but I may need to! Either that or host my iPhoto library locally.
    Scenario:
My iPhoto library was messed up. Some albums were missing and it couldn't seem to find them. Rebuilding my library was giving me errors. So, I decided to start fresh. I created a new library and began importing files. I noticed that my RAW (.CR2) files were showing glitches in them! These were major glitches, like big squares of blue or yellow and distorted pictures. I checked the original pictures, those were fine. I checked the pictures in my new iPhoto library, those files are corrupted! Not the thumbnails, but the files themselves. I opened the file in Photoshop to verify. Yup, busted.
    Attempted Solution:
I tried downgrading to iPhoto 7.0 from 7.1.1, thinking that that might be the problem. Still having issues with the RAW files. Do I need to downgrade to iPhoto 6? I can't believe that's the answer. Even in iPhoto 7.0, the problem persists.
Now here's the interesting thing: not all files are broken. Some files work, others don't. Some files are imported without glitches some of the time; reimporting them results in a glitch. That suggests to me that it's a networking problem.
I'm using 802.11n to an AEBSn2 (gigabit), which has a ReadyNAS NV connected to it by gigabit ethernet. I don't think it's a hardware network thing since everything seemed to work in Tiger.. I think it's a way that Leopard handles the networking stack. Didn't they revise the underlying network stuff for Leopard?
    Help!

Are you able to switch to 11g? I heard that helps for some people. I haven't tried it yet. Right now, I have about 7500 photos, so I want to copy everything and back it up. Once I get it backed up, I'm going to try other solutions, but it may be a few days before I get anything tested.

  • Sony a700 dSLR, iPhoto RAW support

I recently purchased a Sony a700 dSLR. jpeg files import into iPhoto without trouble. I want to try to use RAW files but they can not be imported. The camera supported list has the Sony a100 but not the a700. Is there a plan to support the a700 in the future on iPhoto or Aperture.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
No one on this board has any idea what Apple's plans for the future are. It's a user-to-user forum.
RAW support is a function of the OS, not either application.

  • IPhoto Raw Workflow

I have been experimenting with shooting in raw and am now trying to figure out how best to work with the files. I've always found iPhoto 11 to be sufficient for organizing my photo library (~50K images), while occasionally using Photoshop Elements to adjust or clean up specific images and create panoramas.
As I understand it, the raw file appears in iPhoto as both a raw file and a tiff that is used for display (in addition to the separate jpg created by the camera). When editing the raw file, it seems that the changes are saved in a tif that is *much* larger than the original (10mb ->100 mb). When I have tried to use Photoshop Elements to edit the raw files, there are more options for working with the file in ACR, but this process seems to create a second raw file on export (_2 appended to the filename) without incorporating the changes, thus requiring the resulting tif (or jpg) file to be re-imported into iPhoto (the resulting tif files do seem to be much smaller, however).
Working directly in iPhoto is much easier, but those large file sizes add up and my hard drive space is running low. Reimporting photos into iPhoto is cumbersome, but would seem to save space. Especially if I can then delete the duplicated raw file, which doesn't seem to have any purpose (as I understand it, I can always go back to the original if I want to try processing it differently). Is there another, better option for working with raw files than either of these imperfect solutions? I could rationalize the price of upgrading to Aperture *if* it would actually solve these problems, but I'm not sure I need if if it doesn't offer some demonstrable advantage.
    Thanks for any advice.

As I understand it, the raw file appears in iPhoto as both a raw file and a tiff that is used for display (in addition to the separate jpg created by the camera).
    No it doesn't.
If you import a Raw it's copied in and a jpeg preview made of it. There is no tiff involved. If you shoot Raw+Jpeg pairs then you get duplicates. Shooting Raw+Jpeg doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this case.
When editing the raw file, it seems that the changes are saved in a tif that is *much* larger than the original
It's only saved as a tiff if you have chosen that option in the iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. Otherwise it's saved as a Jpeg. A tiff - as it's uncompressed - will always be a lot larger. That's in the nature of tiffs.
When working with Raws and an external editor again there are no tiffs involved unless you choose there to be:
iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
Next: In the iPhoto Preferences -> Advanced, elect to use Raw with your External editor:
Now when you go to edit the Raw it will be sent to your external editor.
    Now for the kludge:
You cannot save a Raw. The work you do must be output to a new file, in a new format (jepg, tiff, whatever). However, as the External Editor is making this new file iPhoto has no knowledge of its existence. Therefore you must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
So, again, there are no tiffs anywhere in either workflow unless you choose to make them.

  • IPhoto RAW Images Compress after Editing!!

Has anyone noticed that after editing a RAW picture in iPhoto that it compresses to less than half it's size?
If I have a file that that is 11.2mb, after the edit it drops to 1.9mb.
Is this a setting I am missing?
Message was edited by: Richard Hagan

Yes, it will show a smaller size. But if you drag that thumbnail to the desktop you'll find you have a jpg file which is the results of your editing the raw file in iPhoto. What iPhoto is reporting is the file size of the jpg that will created if you need to produce an file of that edited RAW file. Until you drag it to the desktop the edit (or rather edit instructions) are kept in iPhoto's database files and iPhoto uses that information to display the edited version in iPhoto.

  • IPhoto, RAW and Photoshop

Dragging a photo to Photoshop (CS 3) opens a JPG not RAW. It only works if you choose to "edit in external editor". "Use RAW when using external editor" is checked in preferences. This worked fine in the previous version of iPhoto.
I would also like know if there is any way to use the RAW adjustments I make in Photoshop in iPhoto - without saving a copy in some other format.
    Any suggestions?

I think when you drag a picture it assumes you're trying to use it for something, like an export, so it gives you the JPEG. It's a whole lot easier to click "edit" than to drag it to Photoshop anyway.
iPhoto won't be able to see Photoshop's raw edit settings, because they are different raw conversion engines. There's no way around that, except for iPhoto to use a rendered JPEG for viewing. Which is exactly what it should do, but unfortunately, they came so close but still haven't provided proper support for external raw editing.
iPhoto actually does use its own JPEGs for viewing imported raw images -- it stores a full-sized JPEG and a thumbnail JPEG in its library. Unfortunately it uses its own raw conversion to get these JPEGs, even if the raw file is a DNG with perfectly good embedded JPEG preview images. It should, at the very least, extract the preview images from the DNG instead of making its own.
However, if you go in and replace iPhoto's preview JPEGs it will happily use those for viewing. Score! Now I'm trying to figure out a way to automate this, as this will be the Holy Grail of round-trip raw editing in iPhoto. If only Apple's developers had gone that last step. I'd love to actually use iPhoto for more than casual occasional use, but this one thing is standing in the way. If I can find a way to automatically replace iPhoto's preview JPEGs I'll be in like Flynn.

  • Iphoto raw conversion

I have a new Sony ax65 SLT camera and I would like to know if Iphotos converts raw images into jpeg better than if I were just to shoot in jpeg mode and let the camera compress it all
I know you can get photoshop or lighthouse to convert raw images but from what I have read it can be a bit of a process on a imac

    Rainer,
for the following cameras is the raw format supported in iPhoto:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5955
I cannot find your camera "Sony ax65 SLT" on the list of supported camera. Is "Sony ax65 SLT" the same model as "Sony Alpha SLT-A65"? Then it would be supported, but if not, you cannot use the RAW format from the camera directly with iPhoto.
and I would like to know if Iphotos converts raw images into jpeg better than if I were just to shoot in jpeg mode and let the camera compress it all
RAW developement is widely a matter of taste. iPhoto uses the same RAW support as the professional application Aperture, and it is really good. But since it is specific for each camera, it is hard to give a general answer.
I know you can get photoshop or lighthouse to convert raw images but from what I have read it can be a bit of a process on a imac
Shooting in RAW is advantagous, if you need to do a lot of editing. But if you are not planning  to do much editing and like the way your camera developes the raw, shoot JPEG. This way you will see directly when taking the photo, how it will turn out and are not in for surprises later. If you want to use in-camera settings and special programs your camera offers, you can only use them when shooting JPEG.

  • IPhoto-RAW and .RWL

    LS,
My Leica d-Lux4 photo's made in RAW only writes the photo's in .RWL and those photo's cannot be imported in iPhoto. It appears that my Leica is not compatibel with iPhoto. I bought iLife09 because I thought that it updated "iPhoto" to make it possible to import RAWmade photo's, directly in iPhoto. I prefer not to buy other software like Apperture and CaptureOne, because there are no Dutch language-versions. Is there another solution?
    With regards,
    Reint

I've had the same issue. Unfortunately. there is just one of five painful solutions
    1. Convert your RWL's to JPG using an external program(loss in image quality)
    2. Rename the RWL's to RAW, there is a strange but correctable yellowish-green hue to the images
    3. Use adobe lightroom with RWL plugin (no loss in image quality)
    4. Use Capture one as recommended by Leica to import images (no loss in image quality)
    5. Use your photoshop plugin to import images and run a script to convert them to jpg.(lossless)
It really ***** that major programs like Picasa etc dont offer RWL support. It's not supposed to offer anything extra over a RAW or CR2 format, so, it just seems like something Leica developed to make proprietary. Well, such are the problems with going with an unconventional yet good camera.
Due to these issues, Ive actually just started shooting in jpg mode.. annoying. Hope you find this helpful

  • IPhoto, RAW and Elemnts

I'm not shooting in RAW every time (maybe I should) but when I do it it is really a mess if I want to edit them in my external editor Elemenent 9.
When I do it I have to select edit the photo in the external editor and I get the raw in elements then I've to select in iphoto preferences the tiff option, I do some edit in iphoto (just to create the tiff in the modified libray) and then I can edit and save back the photo in elements moving when i save from original to modified (I'm not sure it is clear what i do).
There is any better way to do it?

That's a very confused workflow and not the way to do it, but the actual way isn’t much better.
Processing Raw in a 3rd Party Application
You can also process your Raw with a 3rd Party app like ACR or Photoshop. But iPhoto does not handle this gracefully and it's a bit of a kludge.
First off set your preferred app as an external editor in iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Therefore you *must save it to the desktop and then import it back to iPhoto as a new file*.
This means that you will have your Original Raw and the processed version in iPhoto but they will not be recognised as version and original. iPhoto will see them as two separate shots.
You can, of course, simply process the Raw in iPhoto:
    Processing Raw in iPhoto
When you import a Raw to iPhoto it automatically creates a jepg preview of the file. Why? Because you cannot do anything with a Raw: you cannot print it, use it a slideshow and so on. However, with this preview you can work with the photo immediately.
You can, however, also process the Raw in iPhoto simply by editing it. The Raw processing engine in iPhoto the same one used in Aperture, but with less fine control. (Think of the differences between Word and TextEdit, iMovie and Final Cut). The output from the processing then replaces the preview. You can choose to save your output as either jpeg or tiff in the iPhoto Preferences.
When you are processing Raw in iPhoto you will see the Raw badge on the bottom of the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Note: After you have processed a Raw, subsequent edits to the photo are carried out on the processed jpeg (or tiff) not the Raw. If you want to go back to the original then you need to use the Photos -> Reprocess Raw command.

  • HT2297 iPhoto Raw to JPEG Convesion Issue

When I edit a RAW file in iPhoto '11, my edited version does not lose its RAW badge and I do not see a new JPEG image containing my edits.  My original 28 MB RAW file bloats to around 174 MB after editing.  Can anyone explain?

Thaks for your question which seems relevant.  I believe I had earlier checked the TIFF option to see if it changed the file type upon saving.  Would his explain the tripling in size of the file?  If so, I am happy to know that.  However, with the Advanced TIFF option "unchecked," the file still bloats to 66 MB with my edited changes.  From iPhoto Help I had expected an edited RAW file to change to a JPEG after editing.  I also assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that editing a RAW file would reduce its size by stripping out unnecessary information.  I am still trying to understand 1)  why the edited RAW file does not show as JPEG on the info sidebar, and 2) why the edited RAW file increases in size.
The reason for my question is that I wish to create edited RAW images that can be printed and shared as JPEGs on Flickr and FaceBook.  Thanks.

  • IPhoto Raw & Jpeg upload question

So I have begun photography recently, and am relatively interested in photography. I use a RAW + jpeg method so I can keep both raws to process and photoshop, but also the jpeg counterpart for easier sorting. Is there a way that I can configure iPhoto to split the import by file type? As I have to do this manually (with dual copies of each, in different file formats and composed differently, of course)

I use a RAW + jpeg method so I can keep both raws to process and photoshop, but also the jpeg counterpart for easier sorting.
    No
    But it is unnecessary
Set PS as your external editor for iPhoto and import into iPhoto - it creates a JPEG for display
iPhoto can find your photos in a snap if you keyword them and add faces and places
Or better yet move up to Aperture for better RAW processing

  • Problems Importing iPhoto RAW

Imported iPhoto Library containing about 500 RAW files and Jpeg pairs into a managed Aperture Library.  I really only wanted the RAW masters, but the options in the import dialog box were grayed out, so I just let it do its thing.  See screenshot:
So, I ended up with a bunch of extra jpegs that are tagged as being edited in an external editor (which they weren't) stacked as the pick with my RAW files, and the jpeg pair, when I really just wanted to import the RAW files.  Also, the extra jpegs are missing the location data that is present in the RAW file and the jpeg pair.
Before, I do anything else I'd really like to just start over and do the import again if someone would let me know how to fix the dialog box to just import the RAW files.  If that's not possible, how do I kill the extra jpegs and the jpeg pair?
    Thanks for your help.

Okay, that's absolutely accurate but I was concerned about this:
    iPhoto converts RAW to JPEG
which could be interpreted to mean that it's a destructive process.
And now we know, 21 angels can dance on the head of a pin. Or maybe 23

  • Canon 60D and Aperture/iPhoto - RAW support?

I realize this camera isn't supported yet, so my question is really how long does it typically take Apple to begin supporting new RAW files after a camera's release? It's been about two months for this one :/ Month? Two months? Three months? Is a pattern documented anywhere?
Photoshop has supported the 60D for about a month now. That's frustrating.

I would be interested in seeing anything history of release dates and RAW file support dates also. I am a newbie with only a S95 but also interested in when Apple will release RAW support for my camera [it came out approximately the same time as the 60D]. I have been advised to be patient...it will happen. My issue is that I download a 30 day trial of Aperture before I realized at the moment I can only try it out on jpegs, not RAW. I just hope it happens before my 30 trial runs out.
I did put in a request through the Aperture comment function but was advised it was probably unnecessary since Apple is well aware of new Canon and Nikon cameras.
