IPhoto - really slow - please advise

It takes forever to open, and if I want to use a photo in a document it will again take a painfully slow amount of time to be able to do this - which really slows down my working day.
I have iphoto '11.
I have about 8 750 photos.
I'm wondering if I need to move albums to a separate disk?  Is it the number of photos slowing the system down?
In terms of my hard disk:
Under storage it says that I have 51.81 GB free out of 319.21GB
30.61GB of this is photos.
Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Can anyone advise me of what is happening or what I can do/check to help the process?
Many thanks.

Is your iPhoto library on your system drive or on an external drive?
Did this slowness start all of a sudden or gradually?  What did you do, right before this problem started? Did you install or upgrade software? Import new photos or videos?
Do you sync with any online services, like Facebook or Flickr, that might be slowing things down by trying to connect to a server?
I have about 8 750 photos.
iPhoto should be able to cope with so many photos and the free disk space should suffice.
As a first diagnostic measure I'd try to test with a new iPhoto library - create one for testing and import a few photos. If iPhoto is performing better with a new library, your current library may need repairing or rebuilding, or you may have imported a corrupted image or video with your last import.

  • IPhoto really slow!

Everytime when I open Iphoto and my Ibook G4 slows drastically down. I have about 2500 photos in it, but that's about it. Is it because I have too much, or there is something I am doing wrong? Could it be the RAM? (All I have on my ibook is bunch of word & powerpoint presentation, about 1000 songs, and that's about it)
Would appreciate any comments and opinions.
    Thanks

I got a few questions in response to your questions
How much RAM do you have ?
How much disk space do you have available?
Do you let your iBook sleep at night?
Here is a link to how to see if your RAM is not enough for what you are trying to do. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106386

  • OSX.3.9 crashing like windows and running really slow, pleae advise

My power book G4 has been getting slower over the last few months, and really bad the last 2-3 weeks. I've cleaned off the hard drive (it says I have 4 gig free, but I should have about 10-15 gig free). I've run disk utility, mac sweeper, and tried onyx, run iClean, and nothing has changed. It crashes with the "mac screen of death" (the down fade with multilingual hold down the power button until restart instructions). It crashes about every day now, sometimes 2-3 times. The cursor turns into the spinwheel way too often.
Could someone reccomend a program or procedure to fix this apart from a reformat?
    TIA
    -jm

    You're Welcome -jm!
Something else to look at is System Preferences > Accounts > The affected account > Startup Items.
    What is listed there?
For testing, you can also create an new Admin account, to see if the system functions properly, when logged in with that.
Also, I notice that you have marked your question as answered, but have not utilized the Helpful or Solved options. That may be intentional, but, if you are not aware of the benefits, of using that function, here is some information.

This info, and more, can be viewed by clicking on
? Help & Terms of Use, located under your login name, on all "Discussions" pages.

The Helpful and Solved buttons, that award points, are to the left of the Reply button in each response.
These are not the same as Did this topic solve your issue? Yes No these, which do not award points. As explained Here.

  • Iphoto backup.. please advise

    hi all,
im wondering if anyone can tell me the steps to backup iphoto to my external. each time i open iphoto library from my external drive i get the "caution iphoto is a time machine backup" for the longest time with each backup i thought my external was backing up my photos. do i have to backup my iphoto library on its own each time i backup? seems like that would take a lot of external space fast with each backup.
anyways any help would be much appreciated. when i open my external i see all my backups and choose a certain one then go to users and pictures but then get the caution message. where are my photos? i thought they were being backed up all along...
    thanks
using seagate go flex for mac

You're welcome. I see what you are saying now. You cannot view the backup because a time machine backup cannot be used as a current, working iPhoto library. It would defeat the purpose of time machine. You can restore the library from a time machine backup, but not switch to it.
That being said, you can still switch to the backup without restoring it by copying it to either your internal HDD or another external drive and then selecting it:
    1) Select the library in from a completed backup
    2) Right click ( or option + click) the 'iPhoto Library' package > Copy "iPhoto Library"
    3) Choose a destination. Paste the item. Let it copy.
    4) Hold down option while you open iPhoto > Other Library... > Navigate to the copy and hit Open
Use the same method (step 4) to switch back to your current library.

  • Iso 7.1 causing really slow texting

can anyone help me and suggest what i can do regarding slow performance on my 5s, deleted and did a restore as a new phone and the texting worked fine but put my data back on and its back to the way it was running really slow
    please help

LdL, is the performance specific to one site? If you quit and relaunch Muse and create a new empty site and work with that briefly, is the performance normal or slow?
How large is your .muse file (in megabytes)?
Are you on Mac or Windows?
Where is the file stored (file server, local hard drive, in Dropbox folder, in Creative Cloud Files folder, etc.)?
    Thanks.

I recommend that you eliminate Genieo, Norton AV and CleamMyMac.  See if performance improves.
Also install additional RAM. 8GB would be good for the MBP.
The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

  • Color acting really slow!!! Please help!!!

Color is acting really slow, I can't even view effects, adjust exposure, ect. Wondering what I could do, never used to be like this. Please advise!

When exactly does it start doing it? As soon as the sequence is loaded into Color? Launch Activity Monitor before sending to Color and see if anything else (possibly something running in the background) may be hanging the machine. Does this only happen on a Send To from FCP or does it also happen if you open up Color and create a new project and then import a clip?
Does it happen with only this one particular project? EX3, so it's XDCAM media? Did you do a Log and Capture or did you use Sony's conversion utility?

There is nothing wrong with your Dell, it will work fine with any MacbookPro. I have been using Dell displays for over 12 years with many different Mac models. I have two 21" Ultra Sharp displays working side by side to design a Keynote presentation right now.
    The issue your having is with the way Keynote  takes control of the video output to both displays, it sends the presentation signal to one and the presenter display to the other, this is set up in;
    Keynote preferences > Presenter display.
If you want to show a wesite or another app on  either display,  use application switcher:
press the the  command key on the keyboard, then the tab key; a row of applications will show what applications are running, choose which one you want to show. Use command  > tab to return to Keynote.

I am getting an error 36 when I try to restore my iphoto library from my time machine.  Can someone please advise on how I should resolve this?  I have tried repairing permissions in the iPhoto library and that didn't help.  I've also tried using different versions of the iPhoto library from the time machine.  That resulted in the error as well.

You can ask Time Machine queries on the firm for whatever version of the OS you have:

You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US.  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.
