Iphoto rebuild created triplicates of every photo in my library

How do I delete the 3200 duplicate photos that Apple created for me?
Yes, I have learned my lesson not to trust Apple.

Call Steve Jobs and see why Apple did this?
Or maybe you could tell us a little more about what you did and what happened
Apple does NOT create 3200 duplicates

  • Why does my iCloud photo stream create duplicates of every photo?

    Hi,
I have a MacBook Air, on which I store all my photos.
I routinely export my photos from my iOS devices to my MacBook Air, and view whatever photos that I have through photo stream.
On my iOS device and MacBook, though, every photo has a duplicate of itself, even though in the main library I only have one of each photo—no duplicates at all.
Why are duplicates showing up in my iCloud photo stream even though I have no duplicates in the actual library itself?

    Hello ambenlandry,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Re-named every photo in my library

after uploading 15 photos tonight from my digital camera, i batch re-named them. i'm not exactly sure what i did, but every photo in my iphoto library got changed along with the 15. i've batch re-named countless times and this has never happened before. when i select an individual photo and do a "get info," i can see the original title of the photo. my question is, does anyone know how i can change the names back to their originals, as effortlessly as possible? i mean, short of going through my 5 GB of photos and changing them one at a time? any help would be much appreciated. thanks in advance.
    koley

Try the following on all your photos:
    Photos->Batch Change->Title to File name.
That will reset all of the titles back to the file name of the original files.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How can I *trigger* a modification to every photo in my library?

I'm struggling with the same thing that many folks aon here are struggling with: how to clean out originals in iPhoto 6. I've thought about exporting the entire library, deleting the contents of the orginals and the modified folders, and then reimporting them. The obvious problems with that (I think) are that I'll lose the images' relatioin to the albums and keywords, rolls, etc. So, I want to do it in a way that will preserve all of my albums, ratings, keywords, etc.
One idea: if I could trigger a "modify" on every image in the library, I could then simply delete the orginals folder knowing that I wouldn't be missing any images. And I would keep all the keyword and album relationships. How to do this? I've tried using batch change to add comments, used rotate, etc. and I can't find anything that will cause the 'modify' trigger.
Any ideas? I know this is a crazy work around but I'm at wits (and hard drive's space) end.
    Thanks,
    Frank

    Toad,
I really appreciate the quick and thorough reply. I am using an external FW drive (partioned for a clone backup of my PB and a section for incremental backups of all user files). The tutorial you referenced is pretty much the type of setup I was shooting for: i.e., low res files on the PB and the original/RAW and other hi res on the the FW drive for backup or hi-res needs. BUT...it seems the workaround would cause me to lose the existing album and keyword data for the files and maybe the shoot dates (is that right?). That's a bummer b/c that info is the main reason I'm still trying to do the workaround with iPhoto at all. I'm doing my editing in Photoshop and Lightroom anyway. Also, I need to download images from the camera and edit them in something when I'm away from my FW drive, so I don't want to be anchored to that.
I could do something like what you describe, but I think the fundamental problem for me is that the iPhoto file handling structure is a deal breaker.
My plan right now is to stop using iPhoto, for the most part. I may use it only as an album type repository. I'm thinking that as a first step I'll do some sort of down and dirty export type transition to reduce the file sizes of everything in iPhoto and then bring them back into the albums etc. Then I'll clean out all the originals and change my workflow.
I'm thinking that I'll set up a typical file structure for working with original and modified images (using the FW drive for backup). I would import only the final modified, lower res versions into iPhoto -- for as long as that makes sense feature-wise etc. (I like iPhoto's export plug-ins for example.). That will leave me with versions on the PB that are suitable for, say, 5x7 prints but only one copy of each (I've got 5 copies of the same file in different places in iPhoto now--it's crazy).
That will give me enough of a redundancy with the FW drive having the full res versions of both originals and modified, while the PB will have good enough versions that I won't be upset if the FW drive goes down, but the space used will be a fraction of current and I'll have good flexibility going forward.
Anyway, sorry to be so long winded. I'm still thinking through how to do the transition -- as you might have guessed -- but I think that's the direction I need to go. I really want to get out from under the iPhoto file structure.
I appreciate any insights or words of wisdom (or caution) you might have on that.
And thanks again for the very quick reply.

  • IPhoto rebuilding stopped in process, now photos gone :(

I was doing the usual on iPhoto, tagging faces and editing.  Then I received the error message saying that my iPhoto had suddenly become unreadable.  So, taking the advice off of another discussion, I attempted to rebuild my iPhoto.  Everything was going great at first, but then all of a sudden it stopped its process.  I open iPhoto and only a fourth of my original pictures are there!  I have some photos backed up, but not all of them.  Please tell me I didn't lose all my pictures!  Do I need to rebuild again?  Thank you in advance!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • How can I stop iPhoto from importing duplicates of every photo on my iPhone

Having a problem with duplicates of all pics imported from my iPhone
    -Connect iPhone
-iPhoto opens, showing the photos on the phone which have not been imported.  Problem is that 2 copies of each of the photos are shown as being ready to import.  Import otherwise goes as normal.
-If I select "import all," it will import both copies of each photo.
-Selecting and importing just 1 copy of each pic works fine, but leaves a copy on my phone, even if I delete the imported pics.
-The pics are not duplicated on my phone (before or after any import).
    I'd appreciate any advice.
    Thanks,
    -Mark
    Mid 2007 20in iMac-(2GHz IC2D), OSX 10.10.2, iPhone 5S

The problem is that every import is at least one new Event, and so it's quite possible that you could have 1,000 new Events every month thanks to Phootstream.
However, it's not such a huge deal to just select the Event at the end of the month and auto-split it (in the Events menu)

  • IPhoto ignoring Created date on imported photos

Hi. I just got my first mac three days ago, and I was excited about iLife, but I'm having some trouble.
I view a given picture in finder and see that it has "created date" of "1/4/2002 2:53 PM". However, when I import the given photo into iPhoto, the "original date" is "1/4/2000 12:46 PM". This happens whether I import from the file menu or by dragging from finder into iphoto. It does not happen with all photos, mostly ones taken with my older FujiFilm FinePix camera. I have thousands of pictures, and I can't manually correct them all. What can I do to make iPhoto correctly recognize the exif data contained within my JPEGs? Thanks for whatever insight you can provide.

Thanks for the link to the app. That's a handy little tool. In any event, it reports that the EXIF date is correct:
    Camera-Specific Properties:
    Equipment Make: FUJIFILM
    Camera Model: FinePix2400Zoom
    Camera Software: Exif Viewer Ver.1.1
    Maximum Lens Aperture: f/3.5
    Sensing Method: One-Chip Color Area
    Maker Note Version: 0130
    Image-Specific Properties:
    Image Orientation: Top, Left-Hand
    Horizontal Resolution: 72 dpi
    Vertical Resolution: 72 dpi
    Image Created: 2002:01:03 09:23:51
Nowhere in the EXIF data does the "1/4/200 12:46 PM" timestamp appear. I really don't know where iPhoto is getting it.

  • Can iPhoto (or iPhoto Library Manager) identify thumbnails that no longer connect to a full image. I can restore these from Time Machine (I've done so for 3 images) but don't fancy manually clcicking on every photo in my library to find which need restore

I have been preparing photos for export and found some have a thumbnail but no image, only the exclamation mark upon selection. I have restored three 'broken' thumbnails via Time Machine. I want to indentify all the broken thumbnails so I can choose which to restore and also find them quickly in Time Machine. The only way I currently know is to select each thumbnail, individually, and see if it brings up the exclamation mark 'image'. Is there a way to find only the 'broken' thumbnails?
    Thanks

I went to TM and "Browse Other Backup Disks", selected the USB drive used for TM, browsed for the most recent backup and, one by one, copied each of the folders within /Users/NAME in the TM backup to /Users/NAME on the freshly installed MBP hard drive.  The folders I'm referring to are Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, Public.  I overwrote the existing (empty) folders.
That's not how you restore. Might work for other material (pure fluke that,) but iPhoto is a database and the back up is stored in increments. Time Machine needs to reassemble it from the increments.
Enter the Time Machine interface, go to the Pictures Folder. Locate the iPhoto Library you want to restore and  click restore.

  • IPhoto won't recognize all ANY photos in folder

HELP! I consider myself fairly Mac savy, and yet I'm at a total loss on this one!
I have my iPhoto Library folder on an external drive. Somehow , there was a corrutpion and now iPhoto says/shows I have NO PHOTOS in my library. All my photos/files (over 8,000 of them) and in the iPhoto Library folder unharmed. I just CAN'T get iPhoto to recognize them.
    Here's what I've tried so far --
HOLDING DOWN OPTION KEY WHILE LAUNCHING to reselect folder.
HOLDING DOWN OPTION AND APPLE KEY TO REBUILD EVERYTHING
    DUMPING THE PREF. FILE
I'm hoping against hope that I won't have to reimport ALL my files! Say it isn't so!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    HI robert,
I'm not going to say anything! :^(
but if need be (and I think there is) here are the instructions for creating a new library.
How many images do you have in your library?
Do you mind losing albums, keywords, comments?
    If not...
    close iPhoto
-rename your old library to iPhoto Library_old
-launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed until you get a message screen and choose to create a new library
    -name the new library
-once the new library is open...
-double click the old iPhoto Library folder on the external to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the being in the originals folder in the finder. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

  • IPhoto not creating monthly Photo Stream Events

Up until last month, all photos that were brought into iPhoto via Photo Stream were being added to a (seemingly) automatically created monthly event of Photo Stream images.  It seems to have stopped doing this and I was wondering if there was a way to reinitiate this.
I think what may have caused this to happen was that I renamed one of these monthly events (Apr 2012 Photo Stream) to something generic like "Spring" and added additional (non Photo Stream pictures) to it.  Now, all new Photo Stream photos are dumped into this "Spring" event and I can't get iPhoto to create a new May 2012 Photo Stream event and dump all new photos imported into Photo Stream into it.
I've tried renaming "Spring" to Apr 2012 Photo Stream and adding a "May 2012 Photo Stream" but to no avail.  It keeps wanting to add photos automatically to what I believe was the original "Apr 2012 Photo Stream" that has since been changed.
    Any thoughts/suggestions?  Thanks.

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it doesn't and you are able to download successfully into the new library then your existing library needs repairs: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost and converted to albums. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How do I stop iphoto from creating events automatically when I import photos from an external hard drive?

IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos and when I merge events and then go to finder>all images, I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....I try to delete the extra copies but then the albums or events also get affected, even if there is one copy of each photo left in all images...have someone had this problem?

You don't have a problem at all.
IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos
This is how iPhoto works. Every photo is in an Event. Events are the basic organisation of the Library. Every import means at least one new Event. Yes you can merge Events after import and so on, but there is at least one Event created at each import.
I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....
No it hasn't. It hs created versions of the photos, not copies. There will be a couple of thumbnails  for viewing in the iPhoto Window plus the Master and then a edited version for pics that are modified. The icons for each of these may be similar but they are not copies - for a start they are different sizes - and all are required for iPhoto to work.
    go to finder>all images
Don't. This is simply a list of all the images on your computer. It makes no account or allowance for the purpose of these images. Really, if you're using iPhoto ignore this because if you
I try to delete the extra copies
Then you are trashing your Library.
So, this is how iPhoto works, there is no problem and stay away from All Images.

  • Every time I sync my iPhone with iPhoto I end up getting duplicate photos on my iPhone. The other problem is that I can not delete the dups on my iPhone.   Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

Every time I sync my iPhone with iPhoto I end up getting duplicate photos on my iPhone. The other problem is that I can not delete the dups on my iPhone.   Does anyone have an answer to this problem?

Mike whether I create a folder within the Pictures Folder that iTunes uses to sync photographs or just copy them into the main folder the result is the same, I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.
The User Manual for iOS5 states ...
You can create, rename, and delete albums on iPhone to help you organize your photos and videos.
Create a album: When viewing albums, tap Edit, then tap Add. Select photos to add to the new album, then tap Done. Note: Albums created on iPhone aren’t synced back to your computer.
Rename an album Tap Edit, then select an album.
Rearrange albums Tap Edit, then drag up or down.
Delete an album Tap Edit, then tap the delete sign.
Yes I can Add a new Album, but cannot delete an album already created. The delete sign does not appear.
In iTunes the only folder that I can see listed is the man one into which iTunes stores pictures, which I have named iPhone Photos.
When I look on my PC this iPhone Photos folder contains another folder named iPod Photo Cache and a multitude of folders created by iTunes, the named F00, F01,F02 etc etc. and a Photo Database file.
Now whether I create a seperate folder within iPhone Photos to store my favourite photos in, or just copy them all into the iPhone Photos folder without being encased within another folder, or create a folder inside the iPod Photo Cache folder the result is the same ...
I end up with Photo Library plus another album containing an identical set of pictures as contained in Photo Library.
I am going around in ever decreasing circles here and getting nowhere fast!!

  • How to create workflow to existing photos in IPHOTO and to future imports.

I have Macbook, ILIFE08, Leopard and use IPHOTO for editing. I would like to adjust the grayscale(0%-100%) up to 2% and down to 98% on existing pictures(in IPHOTO Library) in one operation, and every time during future imports(from my camera) Could I achieve this in the IPHOTOprogram itself? Or perhaps the automator could help. I tried to figure out a way by using the latter method without success.
    Desperate houseman

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto Batch Enhancer does not offer that sort of editing. There's no way that I know of to do it while the photos are in iPhoto.
Well, that may not be true. You might be able to setup a batch edit with GraphicConverter to do that particular edit on each folder within the iPhoto Library package. I don't think you could do the entire library at once however. Also the thumbnails would not reflect this change in the originals. HOWEVER, I would make a backup copy of the library before trying this in case something goes awry.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • A copy of EVERY photo we have in iphoto is in the TRASH? HELP!!

We have 75,806 photos in iphoto and the exact same number in the trash can in iphoto. When we import more photos on a daily basis, a copy is put straight in the trash bin!! We are too scared to delete the trash can....!!! help!
We have iphoto 11 and installed it as soon as it was released.
We are not sure how long this has been happening.
To add - strangle we have a shortcut to iphoto icon appeared on the desktop - again, not sure how long that has been there, or what will happen if we delete it.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.

  • How to add a new metadata field to iPhoto where new field is calculated as age in years and month based on a specific date and the date photo was taken ? I want to calculate and display the age of my two kids on every photo.

    Hi
How can I add 2 new metadata-fields to every photo in iPhoto ?
The new fields should state the age of my kids in years and months based on the date that they were born and the date that photo is taken.
    Exampel:
    My son is born 01.01.2010
    My daughter is born 01.01.2012
    Photo taken by data
    Aage of son
    Aage of daughter
    01.07.2011
    1 year 6 month
    not born yet
    01.01.2014
    4 year 0 month
    2 year 0 month
I would like to be able to search by kids age and get the info displayed when doing slideshows.
How to do this in iPhoto ?
Any alternatives to accomplish the same ?
    Kind regards

It can't be done with iPhoto.  There are some DAM (digital asset management) applications that can write to other IPTC fields that iPhoto can't read. One such app is Media Pro 1.
However you would have to calculate the age for each date and add it to one of the fields. There are online age calculators that can do that for you: Age Calculators
If you go thru that much trouble then use iPhoto, make the calculations and add the age to the Description field.  Then you can use Smart Albums to search for 1year 6 month text.
