Iphoto rebuilding thumbnail alert
Since I had missing photos, I started rebuilding but in the middle of rebuilding an alert appears. (ALERT) The photo “IMG_***.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found. I either have a choice of canceling or find the photo. Is there another way of doing this? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
Has the rebuiliding completed? If it hasn't finished by now then I think you should force quit out of iPhoto and try the following:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

IPhoto: rebuilding thumbnail cache.
Further to my last problems with iPhoto 6 - most kindly and helpfully answered on this forum - I now find that every time I re-open iPhoto it has to rebuild the thumbnail cache - a time consuming task I never had with iPhoto 5. Is there a hidden button somewhere that tells the program to keep the thumbnail cache? And while on the subject, is there a reason that "Batch Change" won't accept any typing in the text panel? Wish I could be more enthusiastic about this program but after the faiied Adjust panel and now these I'm beginning to wish I'd waited for an Apple debug before investing my money in the upgrade. Any suggestions gratefully - and slavishly - pursued!
mtay:
Check out this thread. There are a couple of possible solutions listed. If you have any movies in your library read the last post in the thread.

IPhoto 6 crashed after rebuilding thumbnail cache
I, too, have had trouble with iPhoto 6, but only when I finally clicked "ok" after the endless suggestions to rebuild my thumbnail cache. The result? A loss of all my thumbnails on my eMac. My elaborate structure of albums was there, but each one was empty. I gad to call Apple several times, as the solution seemed to work but didn't at first. I hunted everywhere, as 10,002 photos were seemingly lost, and eventually found the image files in the iPhoto trash. The Apple expert told me that my iPhoto library was probably corrupted (perhaps too simplistic an answer, or were all 10,002 photos somehow corrupted?) so the suggested solution was to rebuild the library after having made a copy of the old library just in case--knowing that the images were actually there in the iPhoto trash. Thank goodness I had just enough space on my hard drive to do this. This crisis occurred the very night before a vacation where I was planning to take a lot of nature photos, so when I returned 10 days later, my first task was to rebuild the library with a whole new album and folder structure. It took two days! Now I am getting the "rebuild your thumbnail cache" instruction again every time I open up iPhoto on my iBook that I use for work and my eMac, and I won't dare do it. Who has a thorough explanation of this problem and has any information on whether or not Apple has encountered this enough to address it? Thanks for weighing in on this.
Christina:
Did you check the file sizes of those files you found in the Trash? If you still have them check their size to see if they are truly the full sized files or just the thumbnails?
Does your current running library have the albums, slideshows, keywords, etc. intact? If so I suggest you try letting iPhoto Library Manager rebuild your library. It will create a new library and a new database file and copy the full sized files from the old library. I believe it creates new thumbnails. That might get you away from that incessant "rebuild thumbnails" message. Here's how:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: It can take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos. One user reported that with a library of about 5,000 images it took about 12 hours so plan ahead.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. -
iPhoto6 on iMac running SL - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored the library from time machine, rebuilt the library from iPhoto and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline instead of the thumbnails. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to restore the thumbnails?
Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

I opened iPhoto and a message popped up that said something to the effect of "for best performance rebuild your thumbnail cache" there were two options: rebuild now and ok. I accidentally clicked ok and the message went away. I tried quitting iPhoto and re-opening it to get the message to pop up again and it did not, I also tried restarting my computer. Does anyone know how to manually rebuild the thumbnails or if there is somewhere in the toolbar to do so?
any help would rock my world
thanksLaunch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) and command (apple) keys - select the rebuild thumbnails option for the resutling dialogue

Iphoto shut down importing new photo (and rebuilding thumbnails too)
I'm using iphoto '11 9.1.15 (615) and i think it is the latest one and Lion.
I last imported some photos on july 02 and everything was right. Then after july 14 i installed Lion and i could also use iphoto but for some day i have used it only to see my old photo.
Same day ago i tried to import new photo and iphoto had sudden shut down during import.
First i have tried to rebuild library using cmd alt at start up, issue remained.
So using cmd alt at iphoto start up I cheecked all and i have obteined only that now thumbnails are disappeared.
Now also if I try to rebulid thumnails iphoto immediatly shuts.
I've tried to rebuid library using Iphoto Library Manager butI have this message of error:
iPhoto has unexpectedly quit while importing the event "Rullino ...". If you would like to relaunch iPhoto and continue the merge starting with the event "Rullino ...", click "Continue". If you would like to continue, but skip the event "Rullino ...", click "Skip". If you would like to stop the merge, click "Cancel".
Repairing permissions of Iphto and of iphoto library didn't help.
At end i have tried also using a new account and a new library importi a single photo adn issue is still there.
Any time I start iphoto it says "rebuilding thumbnails cache" but nothing happen.
No message of error appear when iphoto shuts improperly is there any places were i could look for it ? (Logs ?)
I think to have said evrything helping you to help me but i'try to answer any of yours question.
Thank for your help
Mario Agostiniat the and a crash has happened.

Can't use iPhoto/updating thumbnails/original can't be found
I haven't used iPhoto in a long time, and have rarely ever used it, have always found it counterintuitive and unnecessarily difficult. The last time i used it was probably in the past 6 months and it worked OK. Today i'm having a new problem that i can't fix, hoping someone more knowledgeable can help me.
I opened iPhoto because i was going to try using iCloud for storing photos. The "beta" iCloud Photos opened and said that i would have to turn on Photo Library on my iPhone. I looked at that and it said "automatically upload and store your entire photo library in iCloud to access photos and videos from all your devices."
I'm not sure i want to do that, i don't want all my storage used up. I googled "Can i store selected photos on iCloud photos," to see if i can choose which photos in my photo library i want to put on the cloud. I got a link to an Apple Support page which was titled My Photo Stream FAQ. I was reading the beginning of it and it said i needed to have iPhoto v.9.2 or greater. So, i clicked on the iPhoto icon in the doc to open it and see the version number that way.
That was the beginning of the trouble.
I can't remember the whole sequence of what happened, but at the beginning, i got a message window telling me that there were problems with my data directory, it didn't use those terms but something about inconsistencies between different things which it said could cause problems, and one of the options was a button that said Repair. So i clicked on Repair.
Then i got a small window with a progress bar that said Updating Thumbnails. Pretty soon after that, i got another window, a message window that said something like "Alert - The photo “IMG_9673.JPG” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found." The two options were Cancel or Find Photo. I clicked on Find Photo, a window opened with a field to type the name of the photo but iPhoto had taken the window away that had the file name, so i had to close out and wait for the window to come back. Then i memorized the obscure file name and put it in the search field after clicking Find Photo. Nothing happened. Nothing was found or not found, there was no response and no button to click on. there was no way to use that window to search with. There was a grayed out "open" button. What a waste of time. This is why i don't use iPhoto.
So, then i used the Finder Find file window and typed in IMG_ because there were a lot of them, not just a few, so i wanted to find out where they all were and maybe i could just delete them. Find file showed that a lot of them were in Mail, apparently mail attachments, and there was a total of over 4700 of them. So, there was no way i was going to be able to click Cancel 4700+ times, this was a very slow process, each time, there was an extended pause until the next window with 'cancel' came up, and of course, it would be too easy to have an option to apply the choice to all. That didn't exist. I couldn't do anything functional with iPhoto, everything was grayed out, including Quit. I used force quit.
i tried restarting iPhoto, the same thing happens, i got the same 'updating thumbnails' and 'Alert - original cannot be found'. One time, i got the original "you have inconsistencies" message and the options to repair or or cancel, and i chose cancel this time, but it still brought up the Updating Thumbnails/Alert - can't be found' windows.
Each time, i force quit.
Is there anything i can do? i don't want to reinstall the whole system. Is there something somewhere i can throw in the trash? I do not want to have to reinstall the system software for a program i rarely if ever use because i find it so difficult.Terence--thank you for the reply. To my knowledge i haven't ever done anything with iPhoto preferences to change it from the default. i have very rarely used iPhoto because i have found the interface difficult and awkward. Because i use it so little, i would've had no reason to change the preferences that i can remember. i certainly would not have known anything about the options you describe and would not have selected a Referenced Library because i don't know where else i would put the photos. I have been managing my photos on the iPhone for the past 5 or 6 years, and before that, i used a Canon photo management program. i mostly store my photos on the phone but i email photos to my computer in order to post them on facebook etc, before that became easier to do from the phone . i would edit photos in Preview or on the phone. I have barely used iPhoto. i think occasionally, i sync the phone photos with the computer as a back up. That would account for there being a lot of photos in the iPhoto Library, maybe. As far as i know, i have the default settings on iPhoto.
I used iPhoto a couple of times in the past year, to find some old photos, and the program opened normally. Today, it did not open normally but gave me the message about having some inconsistencies and asking if i wanted to repair them, which then led to the Updating Thumbnails window, which then led to the Alert - The photo could not be opened because the original could not be found message window. Nothing else opens. There is no functional iPhoto at this point. I can either open it and look at a screen with those messages on it, or i can force quit it. I can't check the preferences settings, not from within the program.
I searched for the IMG_ files and found about 3000 of them and put them in a photo on my desk top. Does that mean they are in a Referenced Library?
Do you know of any way of getting this 'updating thumbnails' process to stop?
There was a time when dragging a plist file to the desk top or the trash could help to fix problems, and i was hoping there would be something like that i could do. i don't know what changed since the last time i opened iPhoto that has caused this problem that i have not had before. Maybe it was after the change from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I can't remember. -
Hi all,
Let me assure you that before posting this question, I read through many of the posts on the same subject. But there were lots of different pieces of advice and I'm not sure which one to use. Also the last post was a few months ago and maybe some new advice has come up.
I'm getting the message to 'Rebuild thumbnail cache' a lot, even though nothing seems to be wrong with the way iPhoto is working. What's the best way to get rid of this message?
I've tried Option + Apple + Launch iPhoto, then selecting all boxes but the 'orphaned photos' one, then rebuilding. That has not stopped the message.
Thanks and regards,
AndrewMovie lady
Did you go to home/library/caches and delete the iPhoto Folder therein. Then launch iPhoto. It'll take a few moments to launch as it rebuilds the caches.
Do a get info on your HD icon. It'll tell you the capacity and the available space. The reason I ask is that an overfull HD can cause problems like this, but most likely it's just a malformed cache file.

What to do if "rebuild thumbnail caches" is stuck?
How long should it take to "rebuild thumbnail caches?" It has been over 24 hours and after I closed and reopened iPhoto it tried again and still nothing. The wheel just spins. What can I do to bypass this or make it work correctly?
What version of iPhoto?
Backup your iPhoto library, depress the opeion and command keys, launch iPhoto and rebuild your database

After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this? I can see the library icon on my external drive, but it doesn't show as a library in iPhoto. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. When I choose it from alternate menu, doesn't open. Where do I get help?
Peter
Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

A few weeks back I began getting frequent Rebuild Thumbnail messages when I launched iPhoto. Eventually, despite the fact that I'd been faithfully rebuilding as instructed, the Last 12 Roll option began to malfunction via displaying rolls with incorrect date sequences. When this occurred I first tried the Rebuild Library option within iPhoto. This didn't rectify matters so I downloaded Library Manager and ran it. Still no luck so I reverted iPhoto back to an earlier Library6.iPhoto and things magically were fixed. Or at least they seemed to be at the time.
Two days ago I began getting the Rebuild Thumbnails message again and I fear I am headed back into difficulties. I have no idea why this is happening and since the security of my photos is extremely important to me I wouldn't mind finding out so that I can keep it from happening again. Anyone have any idea of what might be causing the Rebuild Thumbnails message to display so often?
Also, the other day when I backed up the current Library6.iPhoto I did so by highlighting the file, selecting Duplicate, and then renaming the duplicate created with that day's date... as in 090114Library6copy.iPhoto. I then dragged the file into a folder named iPhotoLibrary6 Backups. When I launched iPhoto the next day it couldn't find the library so I had to use the select library option. Any idea why this would happen?
Last, but not least, after a few months of using iPhoto I would have to say that the application is a good deal more capable than is indicated by the "Mom & Pop Photo Manager" label that is often applied to it. In fact, as a fairly skilled professional photographer whose images are usually pretty decent quality I would have to say that iPhoto is all I need for processing my images about 97.3% of the time. The more seat time I have with the application and the more I get used to using the various tools offered the more amazed I become with the power of this application to create truly stunning images. My one reservation has to do with the issues I've been experiencing with database glitches.
Thanks,
WinstonI love iPhoto for many reasons but it is sensitive to database issues
Therefore backup a lot
I make a daily clone to an external hard drive, just purchased a 1 TB Time Capsule which I have not received yet and use Old Toad's automator script often when I have loading and modifying photos - knock on wood I have not yet had a problem that even required me to use these
I am hoping that Apple improved the database operation in iPhoto '09 - it clearly is too sensitive to disruption and needs improvement
All of that being said you are very unlikely to ever lose any photos with iPhoto - the worst that I've ever seen iPhoto do is lost track of them and fixing that causes yo to lose your edits and keywords and projects - not good but better than losing photos
If you get a good clean library, use Old Toads script religiously and back up often you will not lose anything short of a massive failure of your entire computer

IPhoto rebuilding library freezes
Two days ago I was sending images from iPhoto over Messages. I sent about 50 images fine in groups of ten. When sending the last four (or five?) images the images stayed on the top of all other applications. I quit iPhoto and the images stayed visible. I shutdown all applications (quit, not force quit) and rebooted my MBP. When I started iPhoto again all my images were gone. I shutdown iPhoto and tried the option+command key sequence when starting iPhoto. The first two options, "repair permissions" and "rebuild thumbnails", did nothing. The third option, repair database, returned my images but lost all my "faces". When I choose "rebuild database" my MBP freezes when iPhoto reaches the "restoring faces" step.
A few weeks ago I had a freezing problem that eventually turned out to be some software (Sierra Wireless) while "cleaning up" my MBP. I haven't removed any software recently. This freezing seems to be isolated to iPhoto.
- I have moved "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist" and "~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist.lockfile" out of the way.
- I have deleted/uninstalled iPhoto from Applications and reinstalled from the AppStore.
- I have downloaded "iPhoto Library Manager", but have not tried it yet.
What to try next?
Mike- Photos was unchecked in iCloud preferences
- moved iLifeAsset Management out of the way
- booted
- started iPhoto with option+control, selected "rebuild library" (fourth option)
- iPhoto hung again when "restoring faces"
- I had top(8) running:

I am trying to "rebuild" thumbnails
I have been having some problems with iPhoto-----some thumbnails not showing; so I decided to Rebuild Thumbnails. It seems to have "hung." I has been several hours and the blue bar hasn't really moved past 1/2 way in awhile. Should I "stop" the procedure? What will happen? Should I then try to "rebuild" thumbnails again or should I choose "Repair" or "Rebuild" Library or Database?
How big is your Library?
Where is it stored?
Do you have a back up? -
How can I delete the iPhoto Video Thumbnails in iMovie?
It's been a while since I've used iMovie, and when I opened the application tonight, I got the following message:
"iMovie needs to generate thumbnails for the videos in your iPhoto library. This process may take several minutes.
You can postpone this operation by clicking Later, but your iPhoto videos will be unavailable until the next time you restart iMovie."
I accidentally hit NOW, and the process began. When I realized it had used about 5 GBs of space, I force quit iMovie, but the disk space was not reclaimed. I need this space back now... I can import the iPhoto videos later. How can I undo the generated iPhoto video thumbnails? There was no project generated, and so no folder with the thumbnails in them. Where are they located? I would like to delete the iPhoto video thumbnails within iMovie, but preserve the thumbnails for other projects. And of course I would like to be sure that I keep the videos themselves in iPhoto - I definitely do not want to lose the videos there. Thanks for your help.
GregThe latest incarnation of iMovie doesn't offer the 'Export with Quicktime'-options, the previous versions did.

How Do I Update iPhoto's Thumbnail/Preview?
Hello,
I use a referenced iPhoto library, that is, the photos are NOT kept in iPhoto's database, but simply referenced in their location on my hard drive.
If I edit a referenced photo elsewhere, say in Lightroom or Photoshop, and then look at the photo in iPhoto, the thumbnail does not update. If I double-click the image in iPhoto (say to edit it), it shows the image with new edits, telling me that it has looked at the new, referenced file. But the thumbnail does not update. I have looked for a "recreate preview" command, but have found none.
Any thoughts on how to get iPhoto to build/update the preview image?
Thanks!
MichaelHello TD,
Thanks for your reply!
I understand about LR as an external editor. . .
What I have found is that if, in iPhoto, I edit a photo that has been changed it will update the preview. It is not enough to just open the iPhoto editor, an actual change must be made. Once made, the preview is updated to reflect the new file. So, for example: edit a referenced photo in external editor; view photo in iPhoto; see that iPhoto correctly reads the new file, but does not update the preview; open image in iPhoto editor; rotate image; exit iPhoto editor; see that iPhoto preview is correctly updated; unrotate photo; see that correct preview is maintained.
What I would like, but gather does not exist, is a way to ask iPhoto to create new previews for a group of images rather than having to open and edit (and unedit) each one. . .
Thanks!
Michael
