Iphoto reducing resolution from a Canon Rebel T1I

We have a Canon Rebel T1I.  Iphoto after importing from the camera is not saving the full pixel resolution.  It saves it on the computer to a lower pixel/resolution.  I might as well be taking the pics on my phone.  Can this setting be changed?  Can I revert the ones already imported to the higher resolution?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Where are you seeing the reduced resolution?
iPhoto is always importing from the camera at the full resolution. Either you have set the camera to a low resolution or you are looking at the previews or thumbnails of your photos.
You will see the full resolution original that iPhoto is storing, if you select the photo in iPhoto and use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File".
But if you simply drag photos from iPhoto's window you will only export preview images in reduced quality.

Do you have Aperture installed? I found your model on a compatibility list; however, there was a note that it requires Aperture 2 to be installed:
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
    According to this excerpt:
To see a list of digital cameras with RAW-format support that are compatible with iPhoto, visit this Aperture webpage (any camera compatible with Aperture, Apple’s advanced photo editing and management program, is compatible with iPhoto as well)
which is at the bottom of this page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iPhoto/9.0/en/pht41627265.html
I may be wrong, but I interpret that info to mean you need Aperture 2 before iPhoto will work with RAW?

  • I have downloaded pictures to iphoto from my Canon Rebel XTI.  I can not email or move any pictures that are vertical.  When I double click on the photo to enlarge it the screen fills with an exclamation mark.  I need to email these photos out.  HELP!

I have downloaded pictures to iphoto from my Canon Rebel XTI.  I can not email or move any pictures that are vertical.  Also, if I double click on the photo to enlarge it, the screen flills with a big exclamation mark.  I need to email these photos out.  HELP!  Also if I do a slide show with the album, those pictures do not show up.

    This:
if I double click on the photo to enlarge it, the screen flills with a big exclamation mark.
is why you can't do this:
I can not email or move any pictures that are vertical.
It means that iPhoto can't find the photos.
    What version of iPhoto?

  • I'm unable to download RAW images from my Canon Rebel T2i to my flash drives. JPEGS are fine. WHY?

Suddenly I'm unable to download my RAW images from my Canon Rebel T2i to my flash drives when just a few weeks ago I was able to. What happened? I can download JPEGS just fine. No error codes, software works like normal, i see the previews and when i go to my flash drives to open the files the dated file is there but it opens with no images. I've reformatted the memory card twice now, so that's not the problem. Any ideas from all my new friends out there. Thank you.

We may need more info.  What are your flash drives?  What are you using to copy?  What computer/OS do you use?
Normally a file is a file... a computer doesn't care what type of file it is.  Whether or not any software knows how to hope the file wont impact the computer's ability to copy it.  This makes me wonder if it is being copied, but can't be opened (e.g. if the software you are using doesn't know how to deal with a Canon T2i RAW file (.CR2).
RAW is more of a "concept" than a "standard".  Every camera model's RAW file will be slightly different.  If you want to open an image in, say, Photoshop... they provide "Adobe Camera RAW" updates for their software and you'd need the update that supports your T2i (btw, when Adobe releases a "new" version of software, they tend to stop providing RAW updates for all previous versions of that software.  So depending on what version of software you use... the only way to get it to work with RAW may involve having to upgrade the software (there are some cumbersome work-arounds.))

  • Cannot get CS3 photoshop on my mac os10 to open my canon rebel T1i .CR2 files

I have spent hours downloading a variety of stuff and still cannot get  CS3 photoshop on my mac os10 to open my canon rebel T1i .CR2 files. I  have downloaded the Camera Raw 4.6 plugin. Photoshop acknowledges that  is the version installed. But it won't recognize the .CR2 file type.  When I say show me all files, the files show up in the open file dialog,  and the thumbnails look right, but when I open the file it is munged. I  also installed the DNG Converter, which also does not recognize the  .CR2 files.
Has anyone figured this out yet? It has been almost a year. I don't want to upgrade to CS4 or 5 or buy Lightroom.

The Adobe DNG Converter 6.2 will open your files, if you have an uncorrupted download and use it properly.  No doubt about that.
Once you launch it, be sure to target a folder containing raw files, not the raw files themselves.  At least on the Mac, the DNG Converter works on folders, not on individual files.
Alternatively, you can try dragging and dropping the individual raw files onto the DNG Converter icon.
Some routine maintenance may be overdue on your Mac, such as Repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility, running Onyx or Cocktail, etc.

  • I am using PSE 9. I had no problem opening my Raw files from my Canon Rebel XT  Now  I have a Rebel 5ti and pse 9 won't reconize the Cr2 files

I am using PSE 9. I had no problem opening my Raw files from my Canon Rebel XT  Now  I have a Rebel 5ti and pse 9 won't reconize the Cr2 files

    See this faq:
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
That will explain why each new camera model uses its own raw format. (.CR2 does not indicate a format, only a Canon family of formats).
The first link tells you what version of camera raw is needed for your camera : https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    You need ACR 7.4
The second link tells you which ACR versions are supported by Elements versions Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    PSE9 supports version 6.5
Further down on that paper, you get links to download the free Adobe DNGconverter for Mac or Win.
This standalone software can batch convert a whole folder of raw files to the DNG raw file format that your present PSE9 can read.
Otherwise, you would have to upgrade to version 10 or later.

  • Canon Rebel T1i External Flash

    Hey,
I was looking into buying in external flash for my Canon Rebel T1i and was wondering if the Canon - Speedlite 600EX-RT External Flash was compatable or what everyone else recomends.  Any help would be great.
    Thanks.
    Chris

I say.... YES, get the 600ex if can afford it.
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/speedlite-600ex-rt-external-flash/5062313.p;jsessionid=A76C11FF4F0C6E763...
I use the Nikon version, but flagship flashes give you
added power for bounce lighting, diffusers, or light modifiers
servo's that can change/focus the light pattern for zoom lenses
more drop resistant than regular lenses
ability to plug in external batteries for quicker recycling
The only time when I won't use a high-end flash... is when I need added power of a "barebulb" like my Quantum Trio.

  • Importing black & white raw photos doesn't work from a Canon Rebel XT

I have a Canon rebel XT digital SLR camera. I usually take pictures in RAW format and they import fine to iphoto but recently I decided to change the settings on the the camera to take in black and white.
When I import these RAW (cr2) black and white photos they come out in color.
When I take the picture and view it in the camera's lcd, they show in b&w
when I connect it to iphoto, and iphoto displays what is about to import, they show in b&w but once in the library they show in color!?!
I've looked through the forums and I can't find any threads with this problem, any help will be appreciated.
    thank you

Terrence's guess is correct. By definition, there is no such thing as a "B&W" Raw photo. All the data from the Bayer-matrixed sensor is there. (The Bayer Matrix has 50% green pixels, 25% red pixels and 25% blue pixels.)
If you set "B&W" on the RAW file the software simply sets a flag. When you view it in-camera the DIGIC chip reads that flag and converts the file to B&W.
iPhoto (Aperture works the same way!) either does not understand or ignores this flag and presents you with a color image. You are free to convert it to B&W if you want.
Indeed, since there are limitless ways to conver the RAW sensor data to B&W, it is possible that you would not like the way that iPhoto converts to B&W compared to the Canon DIGIC method.
If you really like the way that Canon converts to B&W, you will have to shoot JPEG, or use the software Canon supplied that should use the same algorithms to donvert to B&W and may honor the B&W flag.

  • I am trying to download pictures from my canon rebel  eos to my Ipad but i get the message "this device is not supported" what can I do ?

I just bought an Apple Lighting to USB Camera Adapter. When I got home to and connected it to my Canon Rebel EOS Digital Camera. I received the error message "This device is not supported" I was wondering if there is any software or drivers I need to download?
    Thanks
    Don

I use Canon Cameras and have no problems downloading photos from the camera to the Lightning to USB Camera Adapter. My questions and suggestions might be basic but just to make sure:
    1. This is an iPad forum area. Are you using the lightning to USB camera adapter with an iPad? Your info in your original post says iPod. I'm not sure that the adapter works with an iPod.
    2. After you connect the adapter to your iPad and then use a USB cable to connect the adapter to the camera did you turn on the camera?
    3. If you did turn on the camera and still did not get the import of photos to start try a reset your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. This will not cause any data loss.

I have a Canon Rebel that I purchased a few years back and I am considering upgrading. My hobby is taking wildlife pictures but I am by no means close to being an advanced photographer so I do not need top of the line equipment. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  • Camera Raw for Canon Rebel T1i

    Hi,
Just bought the Rebel as a backup camera, I shot a few test shots in Raw format. I have Photoshop CS3, 4 and 5. I went to open the image and in each  case a message came up stating that photoshop does not reconize this type of image. Now, I have a  Canon 5D and I also do retouching work for a friend who has the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark 111 and raw images from these two cameras open just fine. Has Canon changed the raw format for the rebel and if so, what upgrade do I need?
    thanks

Canon changes the RAW format with EVERY camera they release.
Yes, you need to update the Adobe Camera RAW plugin.

  • How do I import video from a Canon Rebel T2i?

I just got a Canon T2i for filming. How do I import the videos from the camera into Final Cut Express 4.0.1? Or, what format do I need to convert it to?

Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap to convert your T2i video files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Import the QT/AIC files into FCE ... using an appropriate AIC easy setup in FCE.  (The easy setup choice depends on how you shot your video ... 720p30, 1080i60 etc.)

  • Hello I'm Christina, I'm using the Canon Rebel T1i to record videos. It only records 40 seconds

I'm using it to record YouTube videos but it only records the first 40-46 seconds then it shuts off. It's on the mode to record up to 24 minutes but it shuts off by itself. How can I fix this?

Usually when this happens it's the memory card.
As the camera is recording frames of video, it goes to the internal memory buffer of the camera. The camera, in turn, writes the data to the memory card. The memory card's ability to "write" data is usually the slowest link in the chain. If the card cannot write data as fast as the camera can capture frames, then the internal memory on the camera will fill up and the camera will be forced to stop recording.
The specs for the T1i require a minimum "Class 6" memory card (the logo look like a C with a number 6 inside) to record video, but frankly a Class 10 card would be better.
I've come to learn that not all memory cards perform nearly as well as their manufacturer's claim. SanDisk and Lexar brands have a fairly solid reputation. Even among SanDisk and Lexar, they make different grades of cards.
Lastly, card do eventually wear out. Think of them like car tires. After one ride you wont notice the wear.... but thousands of miles later it all adds up. The process of "writing" to a card slightly degrades it and after enough writes the card will fail. For a quality card, the number of writes should be very high (in excess of 100,000 writes). So it's possible that a card which was fine once upon a time may start to exhibit problems after a few years.
