Iphoto - restoring events/albums

I am using OSX 10.6.8 and Iphoto 11 9.2.1. It was not responding so I did the alt and create new album thing - its works now. But I have nothing in it. How do I restore all my events/ albums and slideshows??? I found iphoto in time machine and tried to relaunch it that way but it still only has the one album in it.
My 21st is on Saturday and I need the slide show.. Please help!!

To back up the Library:
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
If you were to delete iphoto then they would go into the trash. So an obvious thing would be to export the Albums to the finder first. They'll export as folders full of images.
i know want to back up to this drive so albums are separate as they were in windows.
Then export the albums. Quite pointless but that's what you do. Much better to back up the Library.

  • All my albums on iPhoto have merged into one. Could anybody help me restore the albums as they were?

    Hello,
I'm hoping anyone can help me with my iPhoto issue. I tried to select photos from a particular album and apparently by mistake I selected all existing photos in the library. What happened next is all albums merged leaving me with one single album consisting of all photos.
Could anybody help me restore the albums as they were?
    Thank you,

Do you mean EVents or albums?  In either case the only way to get them back is to restore your backup library created just prior to this occurring.

  • Photo Event/Album Thumbnail not Synched with iPhoto

    Hi and tnxs for reading.
Is there a way to sync my iPhoto Album/Event Thumbnails with my iOS devices? I am noticing that on them, only the first photos are used as thumbnails.
    Tnxs, cheers

    1) why is this not an automatic feature? I mean, do I have to manually trash that folder every time I do modifications and need to sync them or is it supposed to autoupdate automatically sometimes?
You shouldn't have to. This should update automaically.
I see that my thumbnails are not synched aswell. In iPhoto Events/Albums I can select a thumbnail. However, on my iOS devices photo library, the thumbnail is the first photo of the Event/Album. Any chance to syncautomatically the same thumbnail I have in iPhoto
I have no idea. I'd ask that on a forum for your Phone/Pad/Pod...

  • IPhoto '08: Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Gallery & Slideshows ???

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and I am confused.
I must admit I used iPhoto before to look at my pictures but I never bothered with any albums or slideshows or whatever, but now with more and more pictures I need to organize.
So this new iPhoto comes with all sorts of way to organize such as Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Galleries & Slideshows. Quiet frankly I am LOST as to what to use when or for what ???
Okay I can get Web Galleries is for posting on the .mac as a gallery. Why did they do this again if you iWeb that creates photo pages???? Why is this not integrated in iWeb????
Now moving on. What's the difference between Events, (Smart Albums) and Slideshows. They seem to be ways to organize your photos. BUT why have THREE of them? When to use which one?
Any help or comment appreciated as I am confused ....

Events, Smart Albums, Albums and slideshows are different. Here is a short explanation of each:
Events= Every time you import photos from your camera or via drag & drop a new Event is created. This is the basic (automatic) way that iPhoto organizes your photos. Events are date based and can be split or merged based on your preferences. For example, you go to a birthday party and take a few photos, a few days later you go to a picnic and take a few photos. When you import the images, iPhoto will split the pictures into two distinct events. (Check The iPhoto Preferences/Events for some options).
Albums= These are containers that you create to easily group photos in any way you prefer (ex. Combine photos from a couple of holiday parties into one album). You can drag and drop photos in Albums. When you delete a photo in an Album it does not get deleted from the main library. Albums contain links to the photos, not the actual photos. You can manually re-order the photos in an Album. It is always a good idea to create an Album first, edit and re-order your photos there and then create a slideshow, book or web gallery from the Album.
Smart Albums= These are Albums you create that have specific rules, they automatically get updated every time a photo meets the specific set of rules. Smart Albums (SA) can have one or more rules. ex. You have 2 different cameras and you automatically want to see the photos captured by each camera. You create 2 Smart Albums that contain the Rule = Camera Model > is > Nikon D40 (or whatever). Next time you import photos from that camera, the SA will show these photos automatically. (Note: These are links, but if you delete an image, unless you delete it permanently it will re-appear in the SA, as long as it still has the required value of the SA. You can sort by Keyword, Ratings etc using Smart Albums, and you can have multiple sort rules, like Keyword = Birthday and Rating is 5 stars.
Slideshows= iPhoto has 2 types of slideshows available. The first is the "quick" slideshow. You can select any Album or Smart Album click on the Play button, set the transition select the music and you are ready to go. The 2nd type, the Cinematic Slideshow, are albums created specifically as Slideshows. They contain photos you selected and you want to see on your screen in a slideshow presentation. You can set specific transitions between slides, set individual slide times, select music and specify where the Ken Burns effect will start in a slide and where it will end. They are more elaborate than the Quick slideshows.
Web Galleries = are a quick way to share photos with friends, you just select the Photos and click on the Web Gallery button. You set some basic options and publish. Visitors get to see the photos in 3-4 different views including a slideshow, but you can also allow the viewers to add photos to your web gallery. Every time you add a new photo to a web gallery album in iPhoto, it will update the web site when you click the little publish icon next to the name. You can also set tan option to make this happen at specific intervals. (Check the iPhoto Preferences/Web Gallery).
I hope this answered some of your questions. Good luck.

  • When I downloaded an events album from Iphoto to shutterfly I seem to have "lost" this album in Iphoto?  What happended?

I downloaded an Iphoto events album to Shutterfly recently and all went well but now I can't find this album on Iphoto - what did I do wrong?

I'm sure it will solve your problem

  • IPhoto Event/Album syncing across iPad and Mac.

Does the new iPhoto allow me to delete photos on my iPad and have that reflected on my Mac? I essentially want to manage my iPhoto events/albums on my iPad rather than having to sit at my mac for hours. Thanks very much for your help.

You question might better be served in the iPhoto For iOS community where everyone there probably has iPhoto on their iPad.  Here there's no assuance anyone has an iPad with iPhoto.

  • Each album now reads "0 photos." What happened and how do I restore each album with their respective photos???

The albums I created in iphoto are still there, but they are empty!

As I say: Simple solution is to restore from your back up.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Crashing - Recovering Albums and Titles?

I installed iPhoto 6 with about a half dozen problem photos. These photos were set in an album for me to review. After exiting from iPhoto and reopening the next day I had continued crashing. After about 1/2 hour with Apple Care I was able to reinstall my library of photos - minus all titles and albums. My photos are also out of order (no longer chronological). Does anyone have a solution on how to re-import my photos with album and title detail?

    Give this a try:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.
    2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
If this doesn't restore the book I doubt if there's anything the Genius bar can do to recover it thru the database files.  You may not even be able to delete the corrupted book as just clicking on it to delete may crash iPhoto.  If that happens you can either try creating a new book in the library or the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
The above will take less time than taking your MacBook Pro into the Apple store. But that's just my take of the Genius bar when it comes to iPhoto libraries.
Also you should strongly consider implementing a backup strategy ASAP.  If you don't you can count on losing file sometime in the future either from a software crash or a hardware failure, i.e. drive crash.  The easiest backup strategy to implement is to get  an external hard drive  and use Time Machine to backup your entire boot drive. Time Machine comes with every Mac and is located in the Applications folder.

  • Problem with an iPhoto restore.

Good Morning Folks,  I recently had my HDD replaced under the Apple scheme.  I restored everything succesfully from time Machine.  However for some reason I was convinced that I needed to reinstall iPhoto 11 (Don't ask).  So I did, now when I open iPhoto  I get a box saying that,
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto."
"You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto.
Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?"
But it only gives me a box for "QUIT" I spent hours yesterday cataloguing and culling my library.   I've got all the photos but I don't know how to get back to where I was or why this has happened.  And I really quail at the thought of replicating yesterday's work.  Any help appreciated.  I'm using Snow Lepoard 10.6.8 on iMac 27 and I've installed all the updates this morning.  I don't know what newer version of iPhoto there is other that 11.
I've tried to use time Machine to go back to yesterday but
the 'RESTORE' arrow is greyed out.
    All ideas gratefully received.Wilf

I believe that the latest version that runs on 10.6.8.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • IPhoto: empty events

I have a number of recent events showing as follows:
I have tried the repair and rebuild thumbnails tools.
The events are empty ~ the photo's have disappeared.
    The events cannot be deleted.
Any ideas?  To either restore the photo's or, at least, delete these 'ghost' events.
    Thank you

When the event is clicked, it opens with the photos that I chose for the event.
So when you enter the event you can see the photos, right? Are you able to view the photos in the Photo mode?
Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Restored Events in iMovie v10 did not restore media

Using iMovie 10.0.1, I dragged and dropped a bunch of Events from an external hard drive(iMovie Library 1) to my Mac hard drive (iMovie Library).  Once the move was complete, as verified by the 'pie chart' being completely filled in in the upper right corner, I deleted the moved Events from the external hard drive located in the iMovie Library 1 by highlighting the Events, right-clicking and selecting "Move Event to Trash".  When I went to use the newly-moved Events located in the iMovie Library, the Events were empty.
I tried to "Undo Move Events to Trash".  This placed the deleted Events structure back on the external hard drive(iMovie Library 1), but only the structure was there.  When I clicked on the restored-Event, it was empty.  I also verified that the filter was set to "All Clips" and not "Hide Rejected".
In Finder, when I select "iMovie Library 1" and click on "Show Package Contents", and then double click on "__Trash", I can see the file structure of the deleted Events.  However, the only file in the Event directory is "CurrentVersion.imovieevent".  I don't see the media files so I can't restore them.
I can see that the "__Trash" directory is huge, about 250GB so I believe the files are still there, but I need help figuring out how to restore them.

Many users have lost photos while preforming a restore from backup or upgrading the iOS.   Recall, only photos in the camera roll are backed up to iCloud.  There is a way to turn backups for camera roll on/off, perhaps these users had camera roll turned off.
    See:
Settings>icloud>Storage & Backups>Manage Storage,  tap the device's name and on the next screen, be sure Camera Roll is turned on.
    IMPORTANT...
Photos should be regularly synced to a computer (like you store photos from a digital camera) using either USB via iTunes (on a mac use iPhoto or Aperture to move them to an album) or using photo stream.  If you have been doing that, then you can sync those photos back to your device.
If you haven't been saving photos except relying on iCloud to store them in a backup, then that is risky, as many users have discovered.  I'm afraid I have no advice in this case - there is no "cure".

  • Can I restore events with titles from time machine?

I need to restore 2 events back into iphoto. I am using time machine as my backup. When I restore the event it imports the photos from that event back into iphoto but puts them into an "untitled event".
Is there a way to restore events including the title of the event or do I have to go by memory on what all the events were titled?
It would seem that there would be a way to do this. My concern is if I ever have to restore a large number of events from time machine it would be nearly impossible to remember what each event is titled.
    Thank you in advance

    Thomas:
No, you can't do it that way. There is another way but is rather involved and time consuming and will require the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. Here's how:
1 - restore the entire library with the events you want and keep the current one.
2 - rename the restored library to iPhoto Library Restored.
3 - rename the original library back to just iPhoto Library.
4 - open your current library and then close.
5 - open iPLM and get both libraries loaded in the left hand pane.
6 - copy the event from the restored library to the operation library like this.
That will keep your keywords, titles and comments and Event title intact.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • I have lost my entire IPhoto Library and albums

    IMac OS X  V 10.6.8
I have lost my entire IPhoto Library and albums.
    How do I restore?

Your only other option is to stop using your Mac as soon as possible to minimize precious data being overwritten to, purchase a high quality, fast external hard drive, preferably a FIreWire external hard drive such as these
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
using an OS X Snow Leopard install disc, format this external drive as a Mac OS extended (journaled) formatted hard drive with a GUID partition scheme and then, using a install disc of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, install a fresh copy of OS X Snow Leopard and boot your Mac to that external hard drive by using the Startup Disc icon in the OS X System Preferences Panel to boot your Mac to the external hard drive. Once your Mac is booted and running from this hard drive,  then use the OS X Software Update feature to update that version of OS X Snow Leopard to OS X 10.6.8.
Then, you need to do a web search for a Data recovery software such as Prosoft Engineering's Data Rescue and purchase, download, install and use this software to perform data recovery of your iMac's internal hard drive following the proper instructions on how to use the software. to recover the data.
Be advised that any images you recover will no longer be in a format that IPhoto will read and most like will just be a folder with just the images alone without any more linkage to the IPhoto library, but I am not completely sure about this as I always have redundant backups of my entire system.
If this seems all too complicated and complex to you, you need to stop using your Mac ASAP and either contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorised reseller/service/repair center to find out how much it will cost for them to recover your data and bring your Mac in for a more professional data recovery.
I still strongly advise you purchase a high quality, large storage, fast, external hard drive to use for future data backups to prevent such a catastrophic data loss from happening, again.
Every  computer user SHOULD have, at least, one external backup drive and having redundant backup drives is even better.

  • IPhoto behaviour with Albums

can anyone explain or point me in the direction of the reaoning behind iphotos behaviour with Albums and Smart Albums in 2 situations.
the first, is when using Airpics App and Server, the second when viewing a shared library.
my set up is my iPhoto main DB is on a headless Mini. I also have a MBP on the same wireless network that view and controls the Mini.
in situation 1, when my iPad views my Minis library via thr Airpics apps, it says it only views Albums and Smart Albums, not Events but i can see an item that is an event. it consequently is the last full import i do so is the last import considered an album or smart album?
in 2, when i view my Mini iPhoto DB on my MBP via sharing, lots of Albums and Smart Albums come up from the past that i have deleted. Where is it gettign this info from? is it old stuff from the Minis DB coming through? Or are these current or old stuf from my MBP somehow? when i open the Minis DB on my MBP using Alt-Open and selecting the DB Directly instead of over sharing, these Albums / Smart Albums dont exist. i only see what i expect to see, Currwnt set up..

    thank you again Terence.
you see ma bit of an iPhoto Guru, Terence and i dont know how else to contact you and i know its niot right to change a thread half way through but do you have any knowledge on the best way to handle this situation:
i have my iphoto on my headless Mini, controlled by MBP remotely and within the same Wi fi network when home. Iphoto over both is unusably slow. How could i combat this? im told not to use the Mini Library via MBP sleected via ALT when opening as if WiFi drops out it can corrupt. If i use the Sharing from the iPhoto.Mini to MBP, iPhoto.Mini must be open therefore iPhoto.Mini on Sharing on MBP cant be editted, only viewed. The one utility that helps is the iPhoto Manager but all that essentially does is copy from one to another over WiFi so i dont see the difference in that app doing it or me manually doing it, TBH id rather manually do it.
And i need to store the iPhoto main DB at home as iTunes and my iPad use it while i'm not there, and its now too big to carry around on a 5 year old MBP.
I like a lot of others seem lost on how to effectively manage and use iPhoto
