IPhoto & retrieving backed up photos

So I need to find some photos that I deleted over the summer.  I believe they are on my portable hard drive (I back-up using Time Machine).  I plugged in my hard drive and pressed the options key to direct the computer to a different library than my main one.  I found the library on my portable hard drive and clicked on it.  When I did this the same box keeps popping up about using the option key to select a different library.
I feel like I'm going in circles.
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me.
I have iPhoto '09 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.5.8

Since you're still running 10.5.8 and iPhoto 09 you can still recover individual photos from Time Machine.
Open iPhoto and go to the File menu and select Browse Backups:
You will be taken into iPhoto in Time Machine where you can search for and restore photos.
The ability to restore individual photos was dropped with iPhoto 11.

  • Why doesn't iPhoto 08 back up photo book?

When I go to Share>Burn to burn a folder that has an album, slideshow, and photo book, the photo book does not get backed up. In previous iPhoto 06 version, it was possible to burn the photo book.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Sometimes after creating an event folder on iPhoto, all my pictures in that event will be gone the next time I open iPhoto. Why is this happening? Is there a way to retrieve the missing photos?

Sometimes after creating an event folder on iPhoto, all my pictures in that event will be gone the next time I open iPhoto. Why is this happening? Is there a way to retrieve the missing photos?
Most events I make on iphoto will still be there the next time I open iPhoto, while other event FOLDERS will be there, but pictures in it gone.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto asked to upgrade library and has now come up empty even though my iPhoto file is over 130GB.  How do I get back my photos?

iPhoto asked to upgrade library and has now come up empty even though my iPhoto file is over 130GB.  How do I get back my photos?   I am using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 with Mavericks.   My iPhoto is 9.6.   I am very concerned as this file has all my photos for the last 15 years!

If the iPhoto Library is still 130 GB large, your photos are probably still inside; perhaps the library has a corruption.
Or the iPhoto Library is on drive, that is incompatible with iPhoto. Where is your iPhoto Library stored?
To check for a library corruption:  Ctrl-click or right-click the iPhoto library and select "Show Package Contents". This will show the folders inside the library package.
Are there folders called "Masters" or "Old Masters"?
If there is a folder "Old Masters", you are having a problem with recent bug, that corrupts iPhoto Libraries when upgrading. In that case, it would be best to restore your iPhoto Library from a backup you made before you upgraded to Yosemite.
Or, if no backup is available, copy the "old Masters" folder to a folder on your Desktop and create a new iPhoto library and import the Old Masters folder.
If there is no folder "old Masters" try to rebuild your iPhoto Library with the First Aid tools :
Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, but don't overwrite any older backups.
To launch the "First Aid Tools" hold down the options-command keys ⌥⌘ while double clicking your iPhoto Library.
Keep the keys held down firmly until the First Aid panel appears.
    Select  "Rebuild Database".

  • I recently upgraded to Mavericks and now don't have access to iphoto.  I cannot find my iphoto library to back the photos up before upgrading the iphoto but see the photos when I try to change screensaver?  Where are my photos so I can back them up?

The iPhoto library should be in your user folder/Pictures unless it was moved.

  • When I start my iPhoto it says: "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable". I don't have a back-up of my library and I don't know what to do! Thanks

When I start my iPhoto it says: "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable". I don't have a back-up of my library and I don't know what to do! Thanks

Try to restart your Mac. If the library is really in use by another application, that can clear it.
Tell us more about your system. Which version of iPhoto are you using? Which version of MacOS X?
Where are you storing your iPhoto Library?
What happened before this problem first started? Did iPhoto crash? Did you move the iPhoto Library somewhere else?
Try Terence Devlin's fix here:   Re: IPHOTO LOCKED
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a file called ‘iPhoto’Lock.data or similar. Drag it to the Desktop. Make no other changes. Start iPhoto. Does that help?

  • What is the best way to back up photos and videos to a dvd from iPhoto, not in iPhoto format but just in jpeg format to access on either windows or mac

what is the best way to back up photos and videos to a dvd from iPhoto, not in iPhoto format but just in jpeg format to access on either windows or mac

When you export the videos out of iPhoto be sure to select Kind = Original.  Otherwise you'll just get an image file of the first frame of the video.

  • All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

All my photos in the iphoto have disappeared, not sure if this related to any iphoto upgrade or other issue, tried to find the photos through the finder (JPG or photo) but failed, can you help me to get back my photos please?

Help us to help you: There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • In iPhoto most of my photos appear to have been replaced by much smaller versions. What has happened and how can I get the full size photos back?

In iPhoto most of my photos appear to have been replaced by much smaller versions. What has happened and how can I get the full size photos back?

That is either a bug in Firefox 5 or the script has a problem with Firefox 5.<br />
It works in all other Firefox versions like Firefox 3 and 4 and 6 (Aurora) and 7 (Nightly).

  • IPhoto messed up my photos. How do I get them back?

I inserted my SD card and it imported half and the other half turned out to be blank. This has happened with other photos from over a year ago, I just went back to go look through them all and they are ALL blank square blocks....WHERE ARE MY PICTURES?

Most likely your library is corrupted some how.  Launch iPhoto while holding command and option and rebuild your library, this may bring back the photos you can no longer see.  Make sure you backup up first.
If that doesn't work, try restoring the last backup you had before the error presented itself.

  • HT4859 how do i back up photos on iphoto?

how do i back up photos on my imac from iphoto. I thought this was supposed to happen automatically to icloud but i've been advised that only applies for photos on my iphone. thx

More advice, regarding photos on iOS devices ...
You should be importing all pics taken with the iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.  This is covered in the manual.

  • Transfer/back-up photos from iPhoto to External Hard Drive

I have an External Hard Drive to which I wish to transfer/back-up my photos (from iPhoto). My External Hard Drive though has documents and photos that are in Microsoft Word. Please help me with the step by step process of transferring/backing-up photos to my ExHD. Can I still keep my MSWord files, or do I need to clear up the whole ExHD? My main concern, is really to free the memory of my MBPro because I have so many photos already. Thanks

Copy your entire iPhoto Library as a unit from the Pictures folder in your Home folder onto the external drive — just drag the iPhoto Library onto the external drive's icon or into its open main window. Do NOT try to copy your photos any other way than this.
After the copy is finished (it may take a while if your library is large), open iPhoto while holding down the Option key, and select the library on the external drive for iphoto to open. If it opens normally and everything seems to be in order, you can delete the iPhoto Library file from your internal drive. Don't forget to empty the trash afterward.
REMEMBER THIS: Now that your iphoto Library exists only on the external drive, it is not backed up! Back it up on a second external hard drive, or sooner or later you will lose it to a hard drive failure. The one sure thing about hard drives, like all other mechanical devices, is that eventually every hard drive will fail. Don't wait for it to happen and then think about the backups you should have been making all along!

  • Time Machine stopped backing up photos in iPhoto

My Time Machine picked a time late this summer and ended its function of backing up photos for restoration. After this date photos viewed in Time Machine's "backup" pages are a white sheet with title and a folded top right corner while okay in "Now". Corrupted or empty file? I tried, and those after the date do no backups, however those before the date can backup once after which they also turn blank, white & droopy in the "backup" dated pages.
Checked Mail and documents and they displayed properly and backed up regardless of the offending date.
    Tried:
    1.  reboot
    2.  Disk Utility/ check & repair permissions, and check disk on my OWC Time Machine external drive.
    3.  Rebuild Photo Library:  Everything but rebuild the iPhoto library database from automatic backup and reclaim unused disk space from databases (I dont know the unintended surprises these actions might have)

I'm very slow checking things out on my own… what direction should I look to speed things up?

    Thanks Brendon,
Due to my error the thread goes here:

Solved my problem with software updates: Mountain Lion to Mavericks and iPhoto '09 to '11 and then learning how to use Time Machine.
See the link for info on how to restore single photos, contrary to a  bulletin claiming only whole libraries can be restored.

If they are in an iPod backup, then restore another iPod, iPhone or iPad from that backup
