IPhoto running SOOO slowly!
All of the sudden my iPhoto is running SO slowly. I get the wheel when I arrow to the next photo. I thought it might be my Aperture interfering (I've had problems before) so I took that off. It is VERY frustrating. Suggestions?
Thanks for your advice...I tried it, along with emptying iPhoto trash and MAC trash. It is still running so slowly. I don't understand it....I go through about 600 sport photos a week and dump about 500 quickly (or used to) and with the wheel running in between each photo it is KILLING me! Any other suggestions? I am worried about bringing aperture back b/c it caused problems before. I guess I could try lightroom but could it be a bigger computer problem? Thanks for the help...

I would like to get the 3.6 version and uninstall the 4.0 version computer running slow
Here's the process to roll back:
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Close Firefox 4.
You could install Firefox 3.6 over it (many have reported success) or you could uninstall Firefox first. If you uninstall, do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, Firefox 3.6 should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself! -

Help!!!!! I need to get iphoto lib off of hd which is running really slowly, and clicks rather more loudly than usual, how do i do this, im even on my iphone asking this! Computer also runs inly marginally faster in safe boot mode! Could the apple store help?
It certainly sounds like your harddrive is dying. I would Immediately backup your harddrive to an external USB or Firewire harddrive Before doing anything else. It just may save your data in time before you lose it all.
Hope this helps -
Iphoto is running too slowly.
My iphoto is running too slowly. I think I have too many pictures. I do not want an editing program. Is iphoto library manager what I need to? I have read so many of the questions here but can't find one that fits my problem. Will getting the library manage help? Do I delete photos from iphoto then? Is the trial version ok or do I have to pay the $30?
With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you see when iPhoto opens?
what fixes have you tried?
where is you library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?
what do you mean by "too slowly"?

IPhoto 6.06 Update running very slowly
I updated my iPhoto to the latest version and now it is running very slowly. Imports of 20 photos take in excess of 1/2 hour. I'm also using backup and I noticed that my iLife backup is also running very slowly since my update of iPhoto. I also noticed that when I browse my photos, the latest photos imported show up as dashed lines with titles, but no photos. If I double click the dashed outline, my photo shows up in single browse mode. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a way to revert back to the older version and still save my photos? Thanks in advance for any insight.
Steve:
The gray background with dotted lines are due to iPhoto losing the link to the large files. Try rebuilding the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three option.
Also download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administartive name in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
My Macbook Pro is running very slowly
Problem description:
My Macbook Pro (2009) slowed significantly when I installed Yosemite.
I made some changes to settings of various apps and this helped but the system seems to be running increasingly slowly.
I have installed the latest version of Yosemite; I am now on 10.10.2. And the system has slowed a little more.
I have trashed a couple of Apps to make more room. Also a movie. System seems to be running a little faster now (or should I say less slow).
I suspect syncing between iPad and laptop may be slowing the laptop.
The Apple chappies at the shop said my battery needs servicing or replacing (probably the latter).
In particular the following apps are slow:
* Chrome (altho slowness may sometimes be caused by slow Internet connection I guess.
* iPhoto
* MS Word is almost unusable because it is so slow. Possibly the version I have is incompatible with Mavericks?
I se that the EtreCheck report talks about Tuxera being out of date. I can’t find where it is on my system in order to uninstall it.
All help and advice gratefully received.

Download EasyFind and use it to locate specific files. Often it will be successful when Spotlight fails:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/easyfind/id411673888?mt=12
Delete Google Chrome and its various parts. It is a resource hog and has a history of compatibility issues with OSX.
Install additional RAM. Your MBP will support up to 8 GB> The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.

Computer has been running very slowly for some time and I have decided to try and find out what is wrong.
I have several folders on my desktop, some of which contain many jpegs. I know I they are causing part of the problem. Can I just put all the folders into one folder and move that new folder to the documents folder in my home folder?
I have never emptied my downloads folder. Does that play a role in my computer being slow?
I don't know how much of these are relevant but maybe?
Computer came with 10.6 and has been updated to Yosemite.
I have a bootable clone on my external HD which I use as a backup. Today, for the first time, I can't boot from the external.
I am the only user of the machine, but I do have another account. Last night I tried to switch users and it just wouldn't switch. I waited over 5 minutes.
I have emptied all trash (desktop, iTunes, iPhoto) and have reset Safari (clear history and website data).
I looked at activity monitor and though I'm not sure what I'm looking I copied these numbers:
for the CPU %used was System .71 (and that was in red), user .91 and idle 98.2
for the memory I have 2.0G memory and am using 1.94
for disk activity data read/sec is 758 kb and data written /sec 12.0 KB (in red)
Thanks for any help/advoce.
DaveLinc

2/28/15 10:36:57 -
I have a 2008 iMac running Lion. There are 2 active profiles on the computer. One of them runs extremely slowly and the other is fine.
I have moved all of the large files (iPhoto and iTunes) to an external drive. There is plenty of hard disk space. The profile that runs extremely slowly is the more lightly used profile (the user of that profile only occasionally uses Mail and Safari - hardly ever anything else).
I am completely baffled by this and would appreciate any insight that anyone can offer. This has been going on for several weeks and is getting much worse in the last few days to the point that the slow profile is unusable. I've had to force quit Mail and Safari and log off of the user account - only to have the applications slow to a halt again upon re-signing in.
Thanks in advance for any help.An update: I paid for a support ticket and spent the better part of 3 hours over 2 days fixing this. Had to delete hidden files, rebuild indexes, re-index items. It was quite complicated and time consuming.
If you are having this issue I suggest you spend a few bucks and get professional help. -
My computer is running really slowly, any suggestions it has 182 g avail storage
My computer runs really slowly. When booted it up it takes FOREVER and when moving around one app to the next or within apps it is slow too. I had mobileme and upgraded to OSx and icloud. I don't know if those things make it run slowly but I do think it started when I added mobileme. It could be a coincidence. I have hardly used my memory at all so it isn't that. I have 182 gb out of 249 gb free
Hi, sorry to be so slow in responding I was on a deadline. Anyway I did two things;
I emptied my trash can, went through iphoto emptied that trash can-it has a separate trash can, went through my downloads moved those to trash. Emptied my trash can again. Basically I removed anything that I could.
Than I did a safe boot. I was also having a very slow start up when I launched my computer and it was sometimes in what they call "grey screen" mode. Where the screen is all grey at launch instead of having the apple icon and the spining.
if you go to http://www.apple.com/support/lion and click on the icons at left for troubleshooting and installation and recovery there are instructions as to how to do this. I recall having to put in my serial number or something to get to the right area. There are directions on how to find that too.
It runs faster now, though I have to say not as fast as before I upgraded to Lion. My pc is still faster- that is sad. I am going to work on it some more. But for now it is at least much better than it was. Good luck! -
10.6.8 running really slowly and failed to start up 4 times
Hello,
My MacBook Pro (which is about 4 years old) wouldn't start up 4 times, I just got the blue screen with the apple and nothing. Had to turn off. Eventually it started and now its running REALLY slowly.
Any thoughts would be most helpful to get it running more quickly!!
I ran Etrecheck and this is what came up:
Problem description:
Computer is running super slow, and has failed to turn on several times in the past week.

I have had my macbook pro for 4 months and it is now running extremely slowly
please can somebody help me, i don't know anything technical about computers. my 15'' macbook pro has overnight started to run extremely slowly, it is now becoming impossible to use my macbook and it is only 4 months old, i have no idea why and the only things i have put on it are the software updates. my macbook came with snow leopard but i got a free copy of lion to put on the very next day and i've never had any problems. i'm desperate to get this sorted as i'm disabled and it is a lifeline to me. thank you in advance to anyone who can help me. lynda.
i took my macbook to the apple store i bought it from, they checked the memory and hard drive and everything was ok, after a re install of the operating system i still had a problem so apple advised me to back up everything to an external drive the erase everything then reinstall which i've done and am now up and running again, it's like i have a new macbook

I got macbook pro about a year and a half ago and up until now it has been running fine.
However, in the last few days, it has been started to run tediously slowly!
It wont allow me to open applications and i have to force quit out of any applications I finally manage to have because they freeze or stop responding.
On Google Chrome, pages become unresponsive every few minutes.
Even writing this post took more than 20 minutes as the laptop kept freezing and the webpage became unresponsive.
It also randomly shuts off and when it restarts, a message comes up saying my Macbook was restarted because of an error.
I haven't downloaded or updated anything that I know of recently that would have caused this.
Ive been reading through some of the fourms on this and I thought it'd be helpfull to post some of the information you may need to help me solve this problem!
Id be very gratefull if any of you could help! Thanks!

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
