IPhoto's secret backup

Does iPhoto 08 still have the backup files hidden in the Library, etc. I read once that an earlier version would copy an 'original' file to a backup directory so that you can always revert to an original file if you don't want to adjust your changes.
However, this ultimately doubles the space taken up on a harddrive.
Where is this directory/folder? I can't seem to find it.

Not really - there is no "backup" automatic or otherwise done by iPhoto. What you are talking about is that iPhoto does always maintain the original of every photo when you edit it so you can always revert to the original

Yes

It is in your iPhoto library and is named "originals"
However *you should never make any modifications to your iPhoto libra*ry except using the iPhoto program (or iPhoto aware programs like IPLM) - any changes made with other programs or the finder may corrupt your library and cause you to lose data

  • IPhoto 6 and Backup

I recently added an Intel iMac to my office, in addition to my Powerbook G4. I backed up my iPhoto Library using Backup 3 to an external drive and then restored the library to the iMac.
All my data appears in the correct folder, but iPhoto 6 will not open any of it. I have tried using the import command without success, with an error message of "Unreadable Files: (X). The following files could not be imported. (The file is in the iPhoto Library Folder"
If I move the photos to the desktop however, and then use the same import command it works perfectly, but stores the data in new folders named "Originals". I do not wish to do this with 1700 photographs though.
Is this a dilemma with me, or incompatabilities with the systems and versions themselves, or some anomaly with Backup 3?
    Any help would be apppreciated.

    hi Kalessin,
Once Backup restored the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder, did you launch iPhoto?
When you launched iPhoto is that when you say "it wouldn't open any of it?
Were the iPhoto versions the same on both Macs?
Was the backup of the Library folder from the PB and you restored it to the iMac?
Are the usernames the same on both computers?
Have you checked the permissions on the iPhoto Library folder on the iMac to see if they were correct for your username on the iMac (read/write)?
As to the unreadable files...that is the message you will get if you try to import files that are residing in the iPhoto Library folder in the Pictures folder already. That is why when you moved the folder to the desktop,iPhoto created a new library when opened and you could then use the import command on the library on the desktop.
iPhoto 6 has a new file structure in the Finder:
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.

  • How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?

How do I export video files from iPhoto to a backup external hard drive for safekeeping?  Each time I try, the video will not play from the external hard drive.

Use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option with Kind = Original.  That should get the original video file exported.  Try to export one to the Desktop first and open it with Quicktime Player.  If all goes well export the rest to a folder on the EHD. How is the EHD formatted?  It should be OS X Extended (journaled).

  • How to recover an iphoto book from backup

    Hello,
My wife managed to accidentally delete a 75 page iphoto book she's been working on for months.  I have a backup of our iphoto library at an offsite location (read: not a time machine) and am in the process of transferring a copy of it to my local machine.  However, since the entire iphoto library is 80+ gb, I would prefer to only recover this book if at all possible.  I've done some digging through the iphoto library and have found the book in the /iPhoto Library/Metadata Backup/Albums/Album.18008.ipmeta.  I have recovered this file from my backup and placed it back into this folder on my local computer, but unfortunately this hasn't restored the book in iphoto itself.  I'm assuming there are other pointers hidden throughout the database that also will need to be restored to make this book show up again in iphoto.  Has anyone dealt with this problem before and managed to recover a deleted book without restoring the entire iphoto library?
    Thank you,
    Dennis

You must recover the entire iPhoto library. Books are not a seperate item but are database entries
And it is critical that you do not muck around inside the iPhoto library. There are no user serviceable parts in it and if you make and changes you may corrupt it and cause data loss

  • IPhoto burned DVD backup won't work

    Hi,
I just installed iLife 09 and decided to do burn a DVD in iPhoto 09 to backup some old photos. I chose a folder full of albums to burn to DVD and selected 'burn' and everything seemed to work fine. But when I load the finished DVD into iphoto 09, it shows up in the list, but it shows up as having no photos on it. When I look through the disc in the finder, the pictures are there, but for some reason iphoto won't display the photos or albums. Has this happened to anyone else?
    Thanks,
    Chief

    Terrance,
I never mentioned the thumbnail images because their is no thumbnail folder nor is their a thumbnail data file. One thing I didn't mention was that the images also appear in a folder titled "data". The ONLY thumbnails that appear in iPhoto when the disk is selected are those of the pictures I chose to burn. ALL OTHER images (thumbnails) in the 12,000+ database of mine are missing but each of those 12,000 has a placeholder and all the data associated with the picture (descriptions, etc).
Let's go over this to see if I can clear it up for you...or you could just try burning a disk of your own in iPhoto '09 to see what I'm talking about.
Select pictures from iPhoto and then select "Burn." The iPhoto disk that now results will appear in iPhoto on the left sidebar beneath "LIBRARY" & "RECENTS" as "SHARES."
Select the disk in the sidebar and what you will see in the main iPhoto window is the EXACT same thing you would see if you selected "Photos" under the "LIBRARY" in the sidebar SANS the images. In place of the images you will see boxes, placeholder boxes. All the titles and keywords (if you have that selected) will appear. The ONLY pictures that will show up in this view will be the ones I had selected to burn. Good luck finding them among the 12,000 plus placeholders. If you do find them, double clicking on the picture will do what you have chosen for double-click. The enlarged image will take a few seconds to clear as the disk has to spin up.
I hope that gives you a better "picture." Just try it yourself. If you have an older version of iPhoto you will get a disk that is very usable as it only has the images and data from the pictures you select AND that data and images are drag and drop. This one is pretty worthless. Just finding the images on the disk is impossible and the data doesn't drag & drop with the pictures.
Hope that is a better explanation.
    Fight On!

  • IPhoto dB File Backup

from Toad's home or whatever....I noted it's compatible with iPhoto 7 but will it back up the 7 library or 6? Do I even have a iPhoto 6 library if I'm now using iPhoto 7? -L

It will backup the database file from iPhoto 7 or 6. The file name is called Library6.iPhoto for both versions which can be confusing.
If you have your library named other than iPhoto Library or located other than in the Pictures folder you'll have to edit the Automator app as described in the Read Me file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Why is restoring my iphoto library using backup app not working?

    Hey,
I did not have enough space on my hard drive for all of my photos in iphoto. So I did a complete backup of my entire iphoto library onto an external hard drive. I have since upgraded to a new, larger internal hard drive. So I wanted to restore my complete iphoto library.
I used the Backup application to restore the files to iphoto, and Backup says the process was successful. When the application backed up my photos it created 10 different back up files, but only one of them has photo files in it. I restored them all, but only one actually restored my photos. So now my photos have been restored to iphoto, and I am able to see all the photos in each event when viewing them all at once, but if I double click to view a single image, the icon of a ! with a circle around it appears. So I don't really have any of my photos...I don't understand why this is or how to fix it.

What backup application did you use to make the backup and to try to recover the library?
The iPhoto 08 library is a unix style package and will have up to 16 items in it:
    Are you getting something similar?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Have you tried your iPhoto 5 DVD backups with iPhoto 6?

    Hi,
Have you tried your iPhoto 5 DVD backups with iPhoto 6?
When I upgraded to iPhoto 5 I had to rebuild all my previous iPhoto 4 backups to the new version. It took hours and I had to re-burn the DVDs in the new format.
    Thanks,
    -meny

    Hi Lori,
I meant a CD or DVD burned from within iPhoto 5.
If you made such CD/DVD in iPhoto 4 and opened it in iPhoto 5, the library had to be rebuilt. This took up to 15 minutes.
If iPhoto 6 can open iPhoto 5 libraries without a need to rebuild, that's great news!

  • How do I restore my iphoto library from backup

    Hi,
I'm trying to find instructions on restoring my iPhoto library from a backup that is not based on Time Machine.  I have an external hard drive with the entire user folder information which includes all the photos.  I'd like to know if I should delete current file and replace with the backup, or something else?
    Thanks much!

The risk free way to do it is to drag the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the Back Up to your Desktop.
Then open it and check it:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
If it's all there and working correctly, then - and only then - delete the one currently in your Pictures Folder.

  • How can I rebuild my iphoto library from backup

Can I rebuild my iphoto library from the Time Machine backup?
Somehow the iPHoto libary structure(?), if that's the word, has gotten corrupted.
There phtos are still these, in their year/month/day folders, but though iPhoto
opens it does not show Events, Slideshow, etc.
I found a Support page  that tell you how to re-build the library, but
    it didn't work.
It just occurred to me that the Time Machine back up should contain the 'library'.
Is so, how do I access it and will it open the iPhoto library intact with Events, Slideshows,
    etc.?
    Thanks,
    Hal

You don't rebuild a library from a backup, you replace the library with the backup:
If you'll describe what happend when you tried rebuilding the library with iPhoto maybe we can offer another possible fix like try using iPLM as Larry suggested.

  • Can't copy iPhoto from my backup disk

I had to restore a lot of apps from my external backup drive yesterday. Most of them went OK, but, among others, iPhoto and iWeb wouldn't copy over to my iMac from the external drive. And, as luck would have it, I can't find my original iLife disks
Is there no way to copy these from my backup?
    Any help appreciated!

Terrence, thanks for the response. I used SuperDuper for the backup. I didn't try to restore from SD after erasing my hard drive because I'd have brought the problems over from the backup that caused me to reinstall the OS in the first place. So I dragged what I wanted from the backup over to the newly initialized and "systemized" internal hard drive.
But what I decided to do was to get iLife 09. I've been wanting to do it for a time now and this seemed like the ideal time to do it, given the problems.
Again, thanks for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.

  • IPhoto 8.1 backup

I have a question about backing up my iPhoto library to an external HD.
I recently installed a fresh copy of OS 10.5.8 and did an archive an install. In the previous system folder, the iPhoto library file was something like 32GB. I did not have an official Time Machine backup at that time. I wanted to do it after I had a clean OS install and manually moved all of the original images back to my Macbook in order to import them into iPhoto.
All 5600 images are now in iPhoto with no problem. I now have a complete TM backup and noticed the library file on the Macbook is only 22GB now. Again all of the images are there.
Why is the new library file smaller by some10GB? Could it be album thumbnail images or something that didn't get moved back over to the Macbook?
    Macbook Core Duo 1.83 - Leopard 10.5.8

    No.
Standard Warning:  Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • How to Restore iPhoto Library from BackUp?

My iPhoto library has gone blank, although its trash has the 4,555 images. And all organization, albums, keywords, photo names, gone. Recently my backup storage, where library kept, went blank. I got a new backup, and a pro restored most of old data, and transfered to new one. So, I have the Library on the new backup, and need to restore it in the iPhoto Library, rather than create a new one, which as I understand will lose albums, keywords, etc. A friend says that way to hold down a key when opening iPhoto that will have it look for old library and restore? Not in Help or elsewhere.
I had a MacBook Pro, when this first happen. Now have iMac and have iLife 09, but don't want to instal it until photo library restored.
Sounds basic, but how to restore.
    Thanks,
    Armando

    Armando
The simplest way to restore is to put the Library in the Pictures Folder and launch iPhoto.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' To select a Library.
