Iphoto saves edited photos to a low res image

Whenever I edit a image and save it, Iphoto displays a low res photo. How can I have Iphoto display a high res edited photo?

What type of editing did you perform on the file? And is the file a jpg or RAW? If it's a 5 MB RAW file then iPhoto creates a jpg modified version of it for display and further editing. Maybe that's why you're seeing the lower file size.
I have a couple of 7 MB RAW files that, when imported, created a 2.5 MB jpg right off the bat. It's the nature of the beast.
I just ran some editing tests on a jpg and I'm finding that a simple exposure change to a 2.7 MB file results in a 2.5 modified version. I'm also seeing an increase in file size, from 4.0 to 4.1, when applying several edits at one time, like increase exposure, adjust highlights and shadows and tweak the histogram. This surprised me as generally there's no way you can edit a jpg file and not encounter some additional jpeg compression. However, with iPhoto's nondestructive editing you only encounter a one time compression no matter now many times you edit the photo.
Unless you're producing mural size prints it will be difficult to see any degradation in the image.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    Seriously. Where?

edited photos are saved in the modified folder in the iPhoto library
However - that is not the place to access the modified photo - you never need to go directly into the iPhoto library is it is advisable not to - there are no user serviceable parts in it

  • How do elements organizer and adobe photoshop elements relate? Unclear how/where to save edited photos

I don't understand how elements organizer and adobe photoshop elements relate - how/where do I save edited photos?  I tried to save them on my hard drive and the result was a 65 MB file!!!  Not sure what I'm doing wrong :/ - maybe I'm saving the entire folder every time instead of just an individual photo?

There is no standard field for faces. To transfer information you must put it in the standard place that the new program will use. That does not exist for faces. One work around would be to use keywords. You include the available metadata in a photo by checking all if the boxes when you export the photo(s). What the receiving program is determined by the authors of that program. All iPhoto can do is write what it offers to the IPTC & EXIF fields which it will

The problem is that my iphoto library is only showing the low res version and i have to get extended info for those pictures then search for them on my mac. Then when i go to import the high res version it tells me /Users/mjo2287/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2008/Aug 9, 2008_2/Image 1058.jpg

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
can you tell us any more? It sounds like you imported an old iPhoto library into a new iPhoto library - you should never import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library
If this is the case do you still have the old library available?
If you do then quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library form the pictures folder to the desktop and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - you will now have an intact library with no duplicates

How do I Link a low res image in MUSE to a high res image for download ?

    This is quite simple:
1.) Go to menu "File/Add files for upload"" and choose the highres image.
2.) Now place an element (image, rectangle or whatever you want) on your page.
3.) Select this element and use the "Hyperlinks" command in the upper command strip to link the element to the highres image you have selected in 1.)
    Short way:
Place an element, select it and choose within the "hyperlinks" dropdown the entry "Link to file".

  • Color differences between high and low res images in Illustrator pdfs

OK, I'm creating a tradeshow graphic for a client. I designed the whole thing in Illlustrator CS6. But for the proof, I used a low res image of the sky (before we purchased it). Everyone was happy. It was a low-res RGB image imported into Illustrator, then the whole thing was exported as a pdf.
Once they approved it, I purchased the high res image. RGB. Same image... just high res. I popped it into the Illustrator file and exported it in exactly the same way. But now, the image looks much more purple. The low res pdf showed it as much brighter, lighter blue.
My client prefers the lighter blue. When I look at the two images in Photoshop, they look the same (in terms of color).
So... should I be worred? Why is there such a color difference? Thanks!
I'm attaching jpgs of the pdfs just to show you the color differences.
    Julie

Print Graphics: File >> Document Color Mode CMYK.
Digital Graphics:  File >> Document Color Mode RGB.
The PDF presets in Illusttrator will generate CMYK PDFs or PDFs in the colorpsace Illustrator is set to, (except for smallest file size which makes RGB PDFs).
Firsst make sure you are in the correct colorspace in Illustrator before proceeding, adn make your imaeg CMYK if you are for example doing a banner for tradeshow. Backlit graphics are the only print graphics exception and should be RGB because Lambda printers actaully are native RGB.
Open your lo and hi res in Phoothsop and compare the color values by watching the info aplette in Photoshop.
When generating PDFs keep in minds that and RGB PDFs have different color than a CMYK PDF.

  • Any way to "save" edited photos in iPhotos as you progress?

I am new to the Mac environment and wanted to know how to manually "save" edits as you do them. I want to have the option to "go back" to an already saved photo, in case I mess up while trying to modify or touch up a photo. I have been working on a photo album project and noticed when using the "Retouching" option, after I complete my edits, I click "done". It goes back into the album page, and the photo doesn't look the same and it looks distorted. I tried closing the app, restarting to see if it was cached memory issue, but it still looks distorted. The only way to go back is the "revert to original", losing ALL changes/edits I spent a lot of time doing! Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

Well, after each edit function you could save by clicking on "done", then create a duplicate of the edited photo to do the next audit function. Then hit "done" and repeat the procedure for each edit function. At some point, you will find out which edit function is causing the distortion. But you will be able to revert back to the previously edited version without wiping out everything you have done.

  • How can I avoid having to save edited photos to desktop?

I use iPhoto '09 for organizing my photos and Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac for editing my photos, most of which are JPEGs. My procedure is to make a duplicate of the photo I wish to edit and then hand it off to PSE 6 for editing via the Edit in External Editor option.
I notice a strange phenomenon when saving my photos after editing them. Sometimes the photos can be saved directly to the same folder in which the unedited duplicate version resides (my preference), but more often I have to save the edited version to my desktop and then import it into my iPhoto program. I have not been able to discern a reason why I need to save the edited images to my desktop. The system seems arbitrary in this regard. I don't recall having this issue to deal with when I used iPhoto '06 and PSE 4 for Mac. I would appreciate somebody explaining this phenomenon and indicate how I can consistently save an edited photo directly to the folder in which the unedited version resides instead of having to save it to my desktop and then import it into iPhoto.
For your information I use iPhoto Library Manager.

A simple rule of thumb is: if the file format of the edited photo does not change due to the editing the file is saved to the Modified folder and viewed by iPhoto as if iPhoto did the editing. If the editing requires a format change, i.e. from jpg to psd then the new file must be saved to the desktop and imported as a new photo. The following expands on that:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Screen Saver Built in Pictures are Low Res

I just purchased this 30" Cinema Display. Really like it a lot. I wanted to use the Beach or Forest screen saver. All the pictures are low res. Is there a way to get HD picts to replace those for a great looking screen saver. The originals are very grainy. I didn't install the software in the box as I don't believe with the new systems you need to. I am hooking it up to a MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Bennie

The size of the photographs used in the Beach, Forest, Cosmos, etc., slideSavers is 1024*768 and is obviously so on my 23" ACD, let alone a 30".
Interface Lift has some great hi-res wallpapers.
In the past, I've copied the Beach.slideSaver (/System/Library/Screen Savers) to the desktop, right clicked on the copy to "Show Package Contents", burrowed down to "Resources" to find the photos, trashed those jpegs and replaced them with my own. You can rename the slideSaver to *.slideSaver, copy it back to the folder from whence it came (authenticate) and/or to /Library/Screen Savers and you now have hi-res slideSavers of your choice.

  • I can not save edited photos in Photoshop Elements.

I bought Photoshop elements because i thought it would help me save manipulated photos. When i edit photos and change them, then save the changes under a different file name, I continutally get the unedited original when I try to view the edited photo

    Hi Bucephal,
    That is pretty odd, indeed.
Just so that the community can help - could you provide us with information like what version you're using, which OS, and a brief explanation of what effect you're applying, or how you're manipulating the image?
    Cheers,

  • PSE 7...Unable to save edited photos in a version set

I am suddenly unable to save my edited photos in a version set.  The edited photo is being saved on the hard drive but is not linked to the previous photo nor is visable in the open catalog.  This issue in occuring in only one catalog but not in others.  Thanks for any help.

You may be encountering a known bug.  To troubleshoot:
    1. In the Organizer, select one of the problem photos (the original, not the edited), right-click it, and do Show Properties.  What is the full, precise path of the photo, shown to the right of the yellow folder icon at the bottom of the Properties window?
    2. Do Help > System Info.  What is the precise path given for Catalog Location?
