IPhoto sharing

Hi,
I have a 2010 iMac and have recently added a Macbook Air to my collection, I have my iPhoto library on the iMac I am able to access the libary through my Apple TV 2 however I am not ale to access the library with the new Macbook Air. Can I please get some solutions to solving this problem, I am also wanting to have my iMac, Macbook Air, iPad, iPhones and Apple TV 2 all networked together so that everything is seamless.

I think they removed the feature in one of the recent updates. It used to work and still works with iPhoto '11 (9.4.3). I find this very annoying, as this is an important feature for me and had I known about this I wouldn't have updated at all. I'm using an older Mac Mini as a media server and several Macs as clients.
Using iCloud isn't really an alternative for me as it would either mean multiple huge cached libraries or horrible user experience due to the low bandwidth.
I have sent feedback about this to Apple and I would urge everyone with the same problem to do the same.

Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/ folder,

IPhoto - Sharing Library Problem

Hi
I recently experienced a problem with the iPhoto Sharing option.
I am currently on a MacBook Pro and a new iMac. Both are running iPhoto 6.
If I select 'Share my Photos' and 'Look for shared Photos' on both, I cannot get a connection. Nothing appears.
I do this at work every few days without a problem. But on the home machines it does not work.
Could it have something to do with the sharing settings in the System Preferences? iPhoto Bonjour is active on both machines.
I previously had trouble with the AFS, SMB etc file sharing - is there a way to reset that?

not to worry.
this problem has been fixed. I deleted Sharepoints, and ran Cocktail, turning all shares off and on. After a restart, everything was fine again.

How does iPhoto sharing work? Does it enable someone to share your photos on a public wifi?

How does iPhoto sharing (in preferences) work? If you enable it, does it allow someone to view your photos while on a public wifi? I am using a macbook pro with 10.7.4

Only if you set it to do so and only if the person on the other end has iPhoto.

Iphoto sharing iphoto album text

When I save my iphoto album to Photostream, external hard drive or a USB, the faces, descriptions, and comments are not included. How can I share the complete album with another Mac or PC? Also, how do i get the text info included when I create a book?

Next move is to try and repair the existing Library
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Iphotos - shared in source list

My self and my wife share an imac and in iphotos in the shared in source list it automatically shares with her Facebook account. Is it possible to add my FB account to the shared tag? I dont know what verison of iphoto I am running perhaps someone might be able to inform me how

Are you using the sam user account on the iMac? If you want separate Facebook accounts in iPhoto, you need to use separate User accounts on your shared Mac. Only this way can you have different Preferences settings for sharing.
Only, if you both sign into the Mac from different user accounts, but want to use the same iPhoto library, you need to move the iPhoto library to an external drive, see this link:

IPhoto sharing not working

As of today I am unable to share any of my photos to any of my accounts that are enabled in iPhoto, Facebook, and more importantly, flickr which I use for my work. They are greyed out.
I tried closing iPhoto, and reopening, but that didn't fix the issue, so I them deleted the accounts in iPhoto, and tried adding them again and act

OK, so something is not quite right, I have had to reboot my iMac every day now to get iPhoto sharing back, otherwise it just greys out.
Anyone know what the issue is?

Created sideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes and now it will not finish when I try to burn it.

Created a slideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes then created a DVD in iDVD and it plays in Quicktime in my MacBook Pro.
What I'm trying to do is create a DVD that will play in a DVD Player on a TV Screen.
When I try to burn to a DVD it is slow and then freezes in the final phase of burning. However, when I check the DVD nothing has burned. The disc is empty.
Any ideas?

Here's how to create a video DVD from a slideshow in iPhoto:
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. For iPhoto 9.5 and later select 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com. Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

AppleTV 2nd gen, iPhoto sharing, wireless

I see if I purchase an Apple TV 2nd generation, I can show iPhoto pictures on my LCD TV wirelessly that are on my Macbook Pro and use my iPad as a remote control to switch between pictures that will appear on the TV.
But what if I have iPhoto pictures on my Intel Mac Pro with no wireless card, can I set it's iPhoto preferences to share the iPhoto library, then use my Macbook laptop to subscribe to the Mac Pro's iPhoto library, and then have the AppleTV and my iPad show the pictures on my LCD monitor and use the iPad to control what pictures are shown wirelessly?

I think I found the answer to my question. I can stream photos from my iPad to the Apple TV and I dno't need to mess with iPhoto sharing via another Mac on the wireless network.

Difference between iPhoto Bonjour and iPhoto Sharing

I was reviewing my firewall info and I see iPhoto Sharing and iPhoto Bonjour. What is the difference between the two?

Iphoto shared album in iCloud not showing all images to my IOS devices bar Mac

I created an album today with 118 pictures in it. I shared with a number of people using iCloud. When I visited the album to show someone through my iPhone it only contains 20 images. The same happens on my iPad. In iPhoto when I select the album I see 118 images.
Incidentally, when I create a new album in iPhoto it copies some images from the first album I created into it and I then have to delete.

IPhoto Shared Library - Cant Find After Restore from Backup

Hello, I hope someone can help. A couple of years ago I created a shared iPhoto library image (I believe it was a mounted image file) so that two (2) users on a single iMac could view/add files collectively. I have been using the Time Machine backup since we purchased the iMac, and for years everything was fine. Recently, the HD failed and we had to have Apple install a new one. After successfully restoring all files/settings from the latest time machine backup, I noticed that the shared iPhoto library is no longer available. iPhoto asks for the library location upon launch, but I cant find this file anywhere.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to bring this shared image file back, and remount it so that I can find my photos?

How to optimize my Aperture/iPhoto shared Library configurations?

Hi, Dear All:
I just got a new Aperture 1.5 installed on my Mac Pro two days ago, and I decided to use the iPhoto Library as my Aperture's defualt vault, however, I also relocated my iPhoto Library from primary HD (Macintosh HD) to 2nd HD (Media HD).
However, When I launched the Aperture, I found out that I now have two iPhoto Library on my Aperture Project Pane (shown as iPhoto Library and iPhoto Library (1)...)
How can I clean up the old iPhoto Library and set the new iPhoto Library (1) as the defualt vualt of the shared iPhoto/Aperture Library?
Do I better up to let Aperture using a separate dedicated Aperture Library?

I share my entire iPhoto library using sharing in the iPhoto prefs.
When I'm on my other mac, I can see all the shared albums, but they are sorted in a random order ?!?
Not the same way I sorted them, not alphabetical and not by date?

IPhoto shared album in Mavericks - no photos

Upgraded to Mavericks and latest iPhoto 9.5 (902.7). When I open iPhoto, no photos are there. They were stored in a sparse disk image file at Users/Shared/iPhoto_disk_image.sparseimage that used to mount automatically.

Is there a library on that Disk Image? If so:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

IPhoto Sharing: intermittent, inconsistent, why?

I'm not getting something here: MBA & MBP, both Leopard, both iLife08. Access to each other's iPhoto albums is a bit weird - sometimes the opposing Mac shows up as "Shared" in the iPhoto nav pane, sometimes not. Seems that it works if: both machines on, both connected to same WLAN, both running iPhoto... sometimes. Drops out rapidly (probably when opposing machine goes screensaver?), then cannot be coaxed into returning to life. Fiddling around uselessly trying to figure out how to prod Mac1's iPhoto into discovering that Mac2's iPhoto is available. Seems strangely Win-like, in that after a loooong time they bump into each other & it shows again. For a while.
One suspect: "competing" second WLAN in same home for Win machines, to which both Macs have credentials, perhaps they momentarily drop one & grab the other, extinguishing the share?? But - must be so brief as to occasion no discernible interruption to correct networks' services, as a protracted network switch would botch email at least. Not keen on killing Macs' credentials on "win" WLAN as it accesses the only printer in the house, a true wireless printer credentialled to the win wlan. For what it's worth there's also an APE airTunes setup running off the Macs, distinct from the "beluga" (time machine). Frankly I doubt WLAN switching is the culprit, can't "catch it in the act" in any case to date.
Can anyone spell out the precise conditions required to maintain a share connection to another Mac's iPhoto08?

Make that 3 out of 3. A very big issue is an interruption while iPhoto is writing to it's database file, Library6.iPhoto. That file is the heart and soul of the library and when it's damaged iPhoto is helpless. It can be recovered by making frequent backups of your library's dB file (see the tip at the end of my signature) but with a wireless connection the change of interruption is much higher.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
