IPhoto shows new library despite it being 350gb!

Having updated to Yosemite and the latest version of iPhoto I accessed my photos without problem for a few days from and an external portable RAID (set up in a mirrored array) on my MBP, then all of a sudden it said it needed to update thumbnails (it had recently done this successfully as I had bought a new Retina MBP). It crashed whilst doing this and then on the second or third attempt completed this to then say it was updating the cache. After several attempts it completed but now when it opens it shows a completely new empty library despite the fact that if you show the iPhoto package contents it clearly shows the old 350gb library but now with a new library it seems to have added in!
Having spent ages doing permissions, preferences, rebuild (in iPhoto and with iPhoto Library Manager) and all the usual stuff I phoned Apple and all they did was tell me to import the old masters from the old library into a new library which subsequently lost all my meta data. I have included a pic of what the iPhoto Library looks like. As you can see it looks as though a completely new library was created on 30th October.
Anything anyone could do to help would very much appreciated as I am not sure what to do now.
Thanks

While I remember, I have another experience to share. My backup initially wasn't the problem, I was able to restore the backup without any problem, it was the library upgrade process that consistently messed things up. It was only when the library was split into individual images that events seemed to be working out for the better.
Perhaps this is a question for the Time Machine discussions, but I was initially able to see the iPhoto library in Time Machine back for a number of months. During the iPhoto library update fiasco, this was suddenly and inexplicably reduced to about 30 days. Once I realized this I immediately turned Time Machine off so as not to have the oldest copy of the iPhoto library deleted. I then discovered that the oldest version of the iPhoto library in Time Machine was the only one large enough to be the entire image collection. Subsequent days backups were roughly a quarter of the size, these were backups made while I was trying to restore the original large backup.
I would ideally liked to have restored the library to my Mac hard drive, but at the time didn't have a hard drive large enough to accommodate the huge single file. Restoring the library from Time Machine to an external drive clearly didn't work, and maybe the root of my issue.
No matter how many times I try, I believe me, I've tried a number of times – every time I try to restore the largest library, the only one left in my Time Machine backup, the Finder preview tells me the file is about 350 GB, the restored file is a little more that 90 GB – sometimes smaller, and when connected to the iPhoto app, reveals all my photos, as they were, but only as thumbnails. Double click on a thumbnail and I get to see a large exclamation mark.
On the positive side, at least this library is in date order and contains only one copy of each image. I'm able to use this library to find images, then search for the image by name in the recovered images folder. It's not how I imagined my iPhoto experience would evolve, but I guess Yosemite is going to be the semi-analog period for my photo library, potentially until Apple realize that not every one of their customers is using a brand new machine and has more than 1,000 photos in their library.
Right now, my recovered images version of iPhoto feels like an unsorted pile of 80,000 images! I'm planning on visiting the Apple Genius bar again in the next couple of days to see if they can offer any assistance.
Thanks
Phil

  • IPhoto "Show Aperture Library" misses some images

I am running Aperture 2 and iPhoto 09. When I access the "Show Aperture Library" menu in iPhoto to import Aperture images it does not show images that were scanned in from my Canon MX860 scanner. They are in JPEG format. They show like any other image when I am in Aperture. This problem does not exist with images taken with a digital camera. I don't know why a scanner's JPEG image would be any different.
Is there a way to correct this? (I realize I can export images from Aperture to the Desktop and then drag-and-drop to iPhoto as a workaround.)
    Thanks for your help.

Make sure the scanned images do not have a Grayscale color profile but an RGB or sRGB color profile. iPhoto works with these but does not support the Grayscale profiles. If the photos do have a grayscale profile, you can change that in Preview or any other photo editor that allows you to change the color profile of a photo.

  • Now the vidieos won't play on any of my iPhoto shows or library.

Can you help me. I downloaded picturs and videos into my iPhoto program and made a slide show up. It has mostly stills and some short videos and music. It was running great and I downloaded it to some thumb drives for people on the trip. Other shows ended up downloading too (not sure why) so I deleted the show on the drives. Anyway now when I play the show on my computer none of the videos will play. On the strip I see the picture but when I play the show the screen is black where the videos are until the time has run and then next slide comes up.
Any chance you can help me fix this. None of my videos in iPhoto will play now and I get the error message that "a necessary data reference could not be resolved". I can not seem to find out how to access the data reference???
    HELP

I get the error message that "a necessary data reference could not be resolved".
This means that you have corrupted or deleted these movies somehow. Restore from your back up.

  • Why does Mail 'check for new messages' despite it being set to 'manual'?

I want to only receive new email either once per hour or better still manually (once or twice during the day at a time chosen by me). That way I won't be bombarded with emails all day and can get on with my work.
So, I set the 'check for new messages' to 'manually'.
Nevertheless I get email coming in frequently. Possibly every time I send an email, it also checks for new incoming mail (I'm not sure but that's my hunch).
How can I stop Mail from pulling in my new incoming email?
Any answers to this? If I can't figure this out or it's not possible in Apple Mail, it might be time to switch (but I don't want to!)
    Thanks in advance
    Dan

    Thanks Linc, works great.
There should be a hint for this in Mail's preferences, underneath the 'check for messages' option

  • Iphoto 09 "Show Aperture Library" can't load images from Aperture 3.1

I'm trying to create a calendar in iPhoto 09 using my photos in Aperture 3.1. When I select from iPhoto "Show Aperture Library" I just get the spinning wheel. Below is my environment and what I have tried:
    Environment:
    * iMac 27 3 ghz
    * 4 G Mem
    * 10.6.5 OSX
    * iLife 09
    * Aperture 3.1
    * All updates applied
Below is what I have tried/verified:
    * In Aperture, Preferences, set the previews to share with iLife and iWorks "Always"
    * Reviewed export Presets - didn't see anything that may apply
    * Verified it worked on my old iMac (20 inch 2 ghz, ilife 09, Aperture Trail version 3.0.1)
    * Created a new Aperture library (new mac) and still can not see it from iPhoto
Unfortunately, I can get into the Trail version on the old mac (expired) to see if something is configured differently or if this function is not supported in Aperture 3.1.
I know I can export from Aperture and Import into iPhoto, but thats seems like a lot of work for what I need to accomplish.
Someone please show me the light!

It should work in 3.1 also so thats not the issue.
First if you try to access the Aperture library from an application other then iPhoto, say mail, does that work? If it does then the problem is most likely with iPhoto. If you get the 'spinning beach ball' in mail then its looking like Aperture.
Assuming its Aperture you should go through the steps outlined at [Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805]. Do those and let us know what happens.

  • I recently created a new iPhoto library, why does it now show 2 iPhoto libraries the same and 1 being my new one when I hold option and open iPhoto at the same time?

I recently created a new iphoto library. It seems now that when I hold down the option key and open iphoto  I now have 2 iphoto libraries (both the same library) as well as my new library which is now my default as I intended but why would I now have 2 listed the same in this box? When I go to finder>pictures there is only the 2!! I hope I am making sense!

Try the following to see if you can get rid of the ghost:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • IPhoto not showing RAW pics, and crashing on Create New Library

    hi there
i was just organising (tagging, deleting) pics in iPhoto 9.1 when the RAW pics started showing up as just blank placeholders - i'll clarify that:  they were showing previously, however my perception of them 'disappearing' may have been between iPhoto sessions.
my iPhoto library is mostly JPEGs, with the RAW pics being a recent addition courtesy of a Canon EOS 5D MkII.  the iPhoto library resides on a 500GB external harddrive.  the iPhoto library was backed up by way of copying the entire iPhoto folder from the 500GB external harddrive to a separate 1TB external harddrive - this back-up process was done prior to the addition of more recent RAW pics, and the memory card from which all the RAW pics came from has been wiped several times since.  some RAW pics taken in December 2011 are showing; none of the RAW pics taken in January 2012 are showing.
    what i've done so far:
    1.  Option-Command-opened iPhoto and ticked all boxes to rebuild the library and the RAW pics are still not showing.  this rebuild process has been done at least three times now.
    2.  opened the iPhoto Library (via Show Package Contents) and confirmed that the pic files are still there in the Masters folder.  (they are identified by the date the photos were taken, the CR2, and can be viewed in Preview.)
    3.  installed the iPhoto 9.2.1 Update and the RAW Camera Update 3.9, with no change in the RAW pics' visibility.
    4.  Option-opened iPhoto and -
      a.  - created a new library (on the 1TB external HD, separate to the 'backup') into which i -
      b.  - tried to import the entire iPhoto Library from the 500GB external HD but -
      c.   this import ended in an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" message.  unfortunately, i did not keep the error report for this.
    5.  Option-Command-opened iPhoto to create a new library on the 1TB HD but this has ended abruptly in an "iPhoto quit unexpectedly" message.  this has happened twice, and i have kept one of the error reports.
    6.  downloaded and installed the latest iPhoto Library Manager and -
      a.  - tried to Rebuild the library but -
      b.  - iPhoto quit unexpectedly - i have kept this error report - while -
      c.  - iPhoto Library Manager gave the error message "'iPLM'/'ADDK' (returnID 3)".
interspersed with the above steps, i have run Disk Utility Repair Permissions after each crash.
    so.
i know the files are still there.  but iPhoto won't show them.  i've trawled these forums and done - or tried doing - some of the fixes, all to no avail.
    please can someone help.

After updating to Yosemite, I updated iPhoto. Alert said to convert my library to new iPhoto. Then alert said I needed to repair permissions. Then a freeze. Then iPhoto won't find and show my library. How do I fix this? I can see the library icon on my external drive, but it doesn't show as a library in iPhoto. When I double click on the icon, nothing happens. When I choose it from alternate menu, doesn't open. Where do I get help?

    Peter
Do you have a back up? What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto Quits will not show photo library

This will be quite a long post but I want to make it as clear as possible and may-be even assist by being a summary of some of the other posts in the forum.
48 hours ago I "upgraded" to iLife '09 on my "old" Power-PC Dual 1.8 G5.
On first-run it advised it needed to upgrade my library which it then did so...
and Quit (not CRASHED, no crash report no log, just quit)
Since then on reopening It will get as far as the splash screen and then.... QUIT.
I started reading the forums and have tried all of the following.
*1. Disconnect from internet and turn off all attempts for iPhoto to look for web*
*RESULT :=* Does seem to keep iPhoto running longer, but does not show any photos. At least could access the preferences to change location search, sharing and updates. ALL OTHER MENUS GREYED OUT.
*2. Option Key check library location*
*RESULT :=* Correct library being pointed at, on restart told me it was saving "essential information" then same old problem quit before showing any photos
*2. Command - option Start. Rebuild*
*RESULT :=* QUITS without doing anything, ie within micro seconds of clicking rebuild.
*3. iPhoto File Manager, downloaded and attempt rebuild.*
*RESULT :=* Gets interrupted a lot with iPhoto CRASHING (does cause log - crash monitor to be activated), however seemed to carry on with "continue". On re-starting initial excitement because it again told me it was saving "essential data" then promptly QUIT
    _*Overall Result*_
    A non functioning iPhoto.
Confident photos are OK, have checked the contents of the library package and photos still present.
However, now have no photo-management system.
    *New Idea New Problem*
Had an idea to create a VIRGIN NEW Library and then load in some photos.
    1. New Library created A-OK
    2. NO image window opened
    3. QUITs
Drag and drop image into iPhoto
    1. Error the disk you are using is very low on space
-- WRONG it has > 120 GB of space
    2. Then it states i+Photo cannot import your photos to this library because iPhoto cannot access the library.+
-- Permissions are fine, but this may explain some of the problems.
    FINALLY...
    *CONSOLE MESSAGES*
Now while doing some these activities with CONSOLE open I have noticed the following errors
12/04/09 11:33:59 PM iPhoto[297] -[ArchiveWinController loadWindow]: failed to load window nib file '/Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/ArchiveDocument.nib' .
    and
12/04/09 11:29:46 PM [0x0-0x2d02d].com.apple.iPhoto[272] library routine called out of sequence
HOWEVER.... It has absolutely no meaning to me what-so-ever.
    THEREFORE
-- +*I would appreciate any further help possible from this Forum on what to do*+. I am probably going to try and re-install iPhoto, though I note that there is no AUTOMATED way of doing this. At least the libraries are separated from the program files.

Proving tricky because it is so large will <snip>
iPhoto still unworkable on this machine. Crashes after 90 - 120 seconds.

Iphoto on my macbook pro has stopped working. It comes up with a message saying that the library is either being used by another user or it is unreadable. Any ideas why I should be receiving this message?
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"
    Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.

  • When I am importing photos from DVD rom, iPhoto shows " not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library", but i have over 200G free in hard drive? how do i fix it?

    Mac Pro Book
    Mac OS X 10.7.5
    iPhoto 11 9.4.2
importing photos into iphoto, shows "Photo cannot import your photos because there is not enough free space on the volume containing your iPhoto library."
tried creat new library, same thing.
currently only has 2,500 photos in iPhoto
Importing about 500 photos, but cant do it due to the message showed above.
Who knows how to fix it?

How much free space do you have on your hard drive?  Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
    Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.

Iphoto crashes so tried the Alt start with new library and that worked. So now what? How to I get back to my pictures.

That shows you that iPhoto is working correctly and whatever issue you are having is based in your original library.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Why are certain songs being transferred over to my laptop over and over again through Homesharing even though they are already in my new library?

So I recently bought a new Windows laptop and tried using homesharing to transfer my songs from my computer, but I got really frustrated and confused. Certain songs keep being transferred through homesharing to my new library even though I already have a copy of the song in the library. I checked to see if I had the actual file in my media folder and it was there, so why do the songs keep being copied? And, if possible, can someone also explain how to transfer playlists? I know Apple said to export/import playlist but what does that mean?

    Yup, same issue.
Playlist - Right-click on the playlist and select export, it will create a .txt file.
On the other computer File/Library/Import Playlist, select the txt.file.
Or, just select the Playlist in homeshare and select it and hit import.
For some reason when you select "Items not in my library" it is does not show files correctly, if you purchased it in iTunes, they show correctly, or if you loaded them, they don't.

  • New library, yet another iphoto bug

I created a new library yesterday. I am doing one each month to make it easy for iPhoto as it is so buggy and horrible now.
I am using iphoto library manager as suggested on this community to swap between libraries as needed and it works fairly well.
However, I am now in a situation where there appears to be 'leakage' from one library to another.
I transferred 60 new photos to a newly created library.  The sidebar says Photos (60)
but if I click on Photos and then start looking through them it says 3 of 82 and so on and other photos appear which I have definitely not put in this new library, seemingly at random.
Is this a iphoto libary problem, or a general iphoto problem.? Any thoughts most welcome always.  Joanna

My original Iphoto library has almost 14000 photos in it. I was advised not to run such a big library and to have smaller ones.
Iphoto is good for 250,000 images. So, assuming you have sufficent hard disk space, I think you can declare yourself mis-informed
However If I select any one photo and double click it so that it fills the screen, then a different number appears in the top right in the black menu bar that says Photos to the left and to the right it says something like 86 of (no of photos)  The two numbers don't match up.
On the left, the number after the word Photos is the total number of items in the Library. The numer at top right is the number of images in the particular event. Thay said, I've not found iPhoto especially accurate at counting in any version.
Furthermore, if I click through the photos in this view, I can view photos which I know I have not added to that library but are in another library. I cannot see those photos if I am in the Photos sidebar view but only if I click through using the left and right arrows in the menubar in info/edit mode or whatever it is call
Right click on one of these images and choose 'Show Event' -  Where does that take you?
I had that problem with the keywords which added themselves to each and every photo, and there are lots of inconsistencies with the Faces thing when the programme insists that one face has two faces and wants me to name them both, overlapping, but I can ignore that, but this particular thing is making me very confused.
Sounds like your database file is corrupted.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Create new Library still shows old Library names?

Old library was moved onto TCapsule. Create new Library does create
a new Library however all previous Library names are still there, (minus
    the photos)
I need the new Library to show 2009 - Currently shows 2000, '01, '02 etc.

Please describe the steps you used to get where you are now. From putting the old library into TM to creating the new one and what do you see and were do you see it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
