IPhoto Shut Down Problems
The iPhoto app on my Mac won't close down because it says it is still uploading photos into the library when no device is even within range. How do i get it to stop and let me close the app?

IPhoto shut down / photos disappeared
After transferring 193 photos, while editing iPhoto shut down unexpectely deleting photos. Created Event disappeared! The camera was already erased as All photos were imported to the computer. Any chance of finding photos anywhere or the hard drive? I am Devasted! Does this issue occur often?
Probably the imported photos are still inside the iPhoto library, in the "Masters" folder.
Try to rebuild the iPhoto Library - how to is described in Old Toad's post here:
See: iPhoto unexpectedly shut down and my photos disappeared!
Where have you been importing from? Your camera? A card reader? An iPhone?
This problem has occasionally been reported after the iPhoto 9.4.3 update. It seems to happen, when the card in a camera has become corrupted and needs reformatting in the camera.
Once you have retrieved your photos - hopefully - reformat the card or use a differentcard.
I nevert use the option to delete the photos in the camera, at the same time that I am importing. I wait till the photos have been imported and checked and backed up, before I delete them from the card. Using the camera to delete photos is better for the filesystem on the card than letting the computer do it.

IPhoto shuts down when importing pix
When trying to transfer photos from a Sony DSC-W5, iPhoto shuts down before importing any pictures. I've tried restarting, and that doesn't seem to help. I've transferred photos from this camera before, so I don't know what the problem might be. Any thoughts? Thx.
Is the error you're getting in the permissions repair or disk verify/repair? If it's the latter then boot into your system install disk, and in the first window after the language selection go to the Utilities menu and select Disk Utility. Then repair the disk and repeat until it reports no repairs were made. Then repair disk permissions again. Boot back into your PB.
I'd also download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This will definitely force set the access on your library folder and its contents to your complete access. That may help. It's helped others.
Yes. It's possible to reinstall 6.0. If you do, move the iPhoto_602.pkg from your HD/Library/Receipts folder to the desktop. Then delete any other receipt files with iPhoto in the name. That iPhoto_602.pkg file is the 6.0.2 updater if you want to update to that version. Also delete the current application and then run the installer. -
Iphoto shuts down when opening help
Iphoto shuts down whenever I open help or after I download pictures from camera. It brings up a window which says "The application Iphoto quit unexpectedly. " Then it gives a choice to reopen, report or close.
reppan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Problem: iPhoto shuts down. When it started: I imported scanned photos from a cd into iPhoto and now the program shuts down as soon as it is opened. What I have done to try to fix it: deleted com.apple.iphoto.pfile and deleted all photos in iPhoto too. Solution??? Does anyone out there have it?? Thanks!

Ensure that you have the latest version of the OS and Quicktime and the app. That's 10.4.9, 7.1.6 and 6.0.6 respectively.
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
How did you "delete... all photos from iPhoto too", if you can't start the application? Did you drag them out of the iPhoto Library Folder?

My iphoto shuts down when i try to import photos from iphone?
my iphoto shuts down when i try to import or look at pictures. What to do?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue. -
i'm trying to order a book in iphoto. everytime it begins to upload, iphoto shuts down in the middle of the process. Whats the problem?
Hi TD,
Yes they do appear in full size and I can edit them. I've just realized that it's not just photos from the Net that are not appearing - it seems to be happening for all photos I've imported into iPhoto after a certain date.
After spending many more frustrating hours trying to work this out, I found that if I click all of the 'events' which contain the photos I'm after and then create a Book - all these photos appear in the selection window strip. However I still need to work out a proper solution as this still limits me to only those photos in the highlighted 'events' and no new pictures can be added to that particular Book.
Heeeelp please!

When I try to export a file iPhoto shuts down
Until today I had no problems. Now if I select a file to export I get the spinning color wheel for a few seconds and then iPhoto shuts down.
After the second or third try today iPhoto automatically "rebuilt" the library but that didn't seem to help the issue. Here's the first part of the crash report. It's all Greek to me.

Shut down problem on new macbook pro 13"
Hey,
Just a new convert to mac after ditching my glitchy windows desktop replacement.
Been really enjoying the mac (i've had it for 3 days now). I've experienced a shut down problem where everything would close, like the dock and the bar up the top. What's left is just my background and my mouse which i can still move around. If i press the power button, it brings up the shut down options but if i click shut down, it brings me back to the background again.
The first time, it happened was after i tried opening a macmame.dmg file which was not mounting, and that cause problems with shut down in which i had to force shut down. The 2nd time it happened (which was today), was not as a response to installing anything, or so i would think.
Also, is it 'safe' or normal or better to just leave my laptop on sleep instead of shutting it down? I see a few people doing it and just wondering about the benefits of doing that instead.I've done that repair disk. So far this shut down thing has only occured twice in 4 days. I've shut the computer down 6-10 times so it's not a reoccuring issue, so hopefully that repair would've resolved anything.
I shall continue to let me mac sleep instead of shutting it down then, seems easier. And good thing to know that theres no viruses... hate working with virus scanners and all other nonsense.
Macmame is just a emulator for some games. It was something I had on windows so just wanted to see whether it worked on mac, I ended up getting it mounted and installed but didnt seem to work as well as on windows so i disabled it. -

After an import of about 20 black & white photos to iPhoto I was editing one when iPhoto shut down. The "unexpected shut down" message was displayed. I clicked reopen, which it did. However, my last import was completely missing. Not only that, everything I had imported, adjusted and filed for the past 2 weeks was also missing. It has still saved all of the albums I created but all show "no photos".
When I try to re-import from my back-up, iPhoto says "can't import, photo is already in the library".
Can anyone help? What version of iPhoto?
Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Iphoto shuts down whenever I try to export
I am currently using iPhoto 8.1.2 and OS X (Maverick) 10.9.4. I recently purchased an external HD as my memory was filling up rapidly. I was exporting photos from iPhoto and about 1,000 went through and then iPhoto shut down "unexpectedly". Now whenever I try to export any photo from iPhoto to any destination (external HD, desktop, a file, etc...) the export starts and then iPhoto shuts down. I have been doing the exports by highlighting an album in iPhoto, hitting file, then export, and when it asks where I select the destination. It's strange because it was working and then just stopped. I have re-booted, ejected the external HD, but the issue remains. Do I need to bite the bullet and just upgrade iPhoto or is there a fix?
Thanks for any and all assistance. This is because iPhoto 09 is not fully compatible with 10.9.4 and there is no known fix at this time, except upgrading to iPhoto 11.
If space is an issue, why not just move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

Iphoto shuts down when in Facebook folder
Yesterday I had trouble posting photos on Facebook from an Iphoto folder. Now, when I go into my Facebook folder in Iphoto with all my albums I have posted on Facebook, Iphoto shuts down completely. I have rebooted, checked for updates, and done repairs to the library data base. Any ideas of what I can do to fix this?
It's for my Mac Pro. I just went to an apple store and they're having me rebuild the library for now. Hope it works!

Hi everyone,
I used to have the shut down problem with my Macbook air. I have an 11" Later 2011 Macbook air.
The problem did not go away after updating to Mountain lion.
I just realized that although I was closing all programs, I was not ejecting my 3G modem/dongle.
Once I ejected it before commanding it to shut down, it did shut down properly.
I thought I should share it with you. May be there is a program that has not been closed or a devise that has not been unplugged/ejected properly and is restricting the shut down.
It worked for me. Hope it will work for you.
Enjoy your Mac.
J.Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store
to have the battery checked out.
Best, -
I recently upgraded my software to the latest iPhoto and Lion. Now iPhoto shuts down moments after opening every time and asks me to repair it. I believe this began happening after I checked the box to enable PhotoStream. How do I fix it?
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
