Iphoto shuts down whenever I try to export

I am currently using iPhoto 8.1.2 and OS X (Maverick) 10.9.4. I recently purchased an external HD as my memory was filling up rapidly. I was exporting photos from iPhoto and about 1,000 went through and then iPhoto shut down "unexpectedly". Now whenever I try to export any photo from iPhoto to any destination (external HD, desktop, a file, etc...) the export starts and then iPhoto shuts down. I have been doing the exports by highlighting an album in iPhoto, hitting file, then export, and when it asks where I select the destination. It's strange because it was working and then just stopped. I have re-booted, ejected the external HD, but the issue remains. Do I need to bite the bullet and just upgrade iPhoto or is there a fix?
Thanks for any and all assistance.

This is because iPhoto 09 is not fully compatible with 10.9.4 and there is no known fix at this time, except upgrading to iPhoto 11.
If space is an issue, why not just move the Library:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • My iphoto shuts down when i try to import photos  from iphone?

my iphoto shuts down when i try to import or look at pictures. What to do?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.

Sorry to be so direct, but without proper system info that's totalyl useless, including specifics on what location you are trying to save to. This for all intents and purposes could have nothing to do with Norton, but be a genuine system issue or even hardware problem...

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? Have you updated 12 to the 12.1 Update using an opened projects Help Menu/Update. If not, please do so.
Let us go through the usual drill...
    a. Latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer with Premiere Elements 12/12.1?
    b. Running program from User Account with Administrative Privileges?
    c. Is everything else working in Premiere Elements except for its YouTube feature?
    d. Does the problem exist with and without your antivirus and firewall(s) disabled?
Then the drill specific to Publish+Share/Social Websites/YouTube...
    a. What is the estimated file size and duration of the Timeline that you are trying to upload to YouTube from the Premiere Elements feature?
What type of formats are present on that Timeline?
    b. Please check out your YouTube account..... by exporting your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 Timeline to a .mp4 file saved to the computer hard drive.
Then upload that .mp4 to YouTube at the YouTube web site. Do you have a regular account at YouTube or one of its time extended ones?
    c. Can you describe any differences between the 1 video upload that worked from within Premiere Elements feature versus the 1 that did not.
If you start a new project for the one that did not work, does it then work?
Please review and consider. Your answers will help us evaluate the situation for us to come up with a solution for you.
    Thanks.

  • Quicktime shuts down when i try to export

I have 60 gb video ipod and i'm tryin to transfer video to my ipod. I converted them to .mov files which from what i gathered on the FAQ page it should allow them to play. I just have to export from quicktime. BUT, everytime i click export file quicktime closes and it doesn't allow me to. Any ideas on how to fix this? or another way to get video on my ipod?

okay. let's try swapping out your QuickTime.
    let's try this technique first.
head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
next, we'll get a fresh copy of QuickTime into your PC by doing a repair install of itunes.
switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the repair install.
go into Add/Remove and select itunes. click "Change" and then click "Repair".
if the repair install goes through okay, restart the PC and try launching itunes again. does it launch properly now?

  • ITunes shuts down whenever I try to open a movie or tv show.

Trying to fix a friends machine so they can let their kids watch movies on their computer again.  After looking at it I am stumped.
Each time I open iTunes and then attempt to open movies or a tv show, the screen acts like it is going to open and then essentially stops and closes the video window.  No real informatioin is provided as to why this is happening.  The computer has had no previous problems playing video in iTunes and Netflix works just fine.
    Windows Vista.  Current iTunes version.
Checked for updates.  Did an installation repair.  Deleted iTunes and reinstalled with no success.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Let's try the following user tip with that one:

  • LR 5.6 keeps shutting down whenever I try to make any changes, started last night when I was keywording.  Any thoughts?

Each time I open LR 5.6, I receive a message that it has stopped working and that Windows will try to find a solution.  This very frustrating to say the least.  It started last night when I was key wording and color coding images.  Each time it did it, the changes I made were there and seem to be in my backup but it keeps happening.  Any thoughts?

Do you have a backup that you can restore from? Your old hard drive seems to be the problem.

  • Iphoto shuts down when opening help

Iphoto shuts down whenever I open help or after I download pictures from camera. It brings up a window which says "The application Iphoto quit unexpectedly. " Then it gives a choice to reopen, report or close.

    reppan:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When I try to export a file iPhoto shuts down

Until today I had no problems.  Now if I select a file to export I get the spinning color wheel for a few seconds and then iPhoto shuts down.

After the second or third try today iPhoto automatically "rebuilt" the library but that didn't seem to help the issue.  Here's the first part of the crash report.  It's all Greek to me.

  • While editing photos iPhoto shut down.  The unexpected shut down message appeared and I pressed re-open.  When it reopened I had lost my most recent import as well as imports from the past 2 weeks.  When I try to re-import it says that they already exist

After an import of about 20 black & white photos to iPhoto I was editing one when iPhoto shut down.  The "unexpected shut down" message was displayed.  I clicked reopen, which it did.  However, my last import was completely missing.  Not only that, everything I had imported, adjusted and filed for the past 2 weeks was also missing.  It has still saved all of the albums I created but all show "no photos".
When I try to re-import from my back-up, iPhoto says "can't import, photo is already in the library".
    Can anyone help?

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto shut down / photos disappeared

After transferring 193 photos, while editing iPhoto shut down unexpectely deleting photos.  Created Event disappeared! The camera was already erased as All photos were imported to the computer.  Any chance of finding photos anywhere or the hard drive?  I am Devasted! Does this issue occur often?

Probably the imported photos are still inside the iPhoto library, in the "Masters" folder.
Try to rebuild the iPhoto Library - how to is described in Old Toad's post here:
See: iPhoto unexpectedly shut down and my photos disappeared!
Where have you been importing from? Your camera? A card reader? An iPhone?
This problem has occasionally been reported after the iPhoto 9.4.3 update. It seems to happen, when the card in a camera has become corrupted and needs reformatting in the camera.
Once you have retrieved your photos - hopefully - reformat the card or use a differentcard.
I nevert use the option to delete the photos in the camera, at the same time that I am importing. I wait till the photos have been imported and checked and backed up, before I delete them from the card. Using the camera to delete photos is better for the filesystem on the card than letting the computer do it.
