IPhoto slideshow export -- jerky Ken Burns rendering

Have an iPhoto slideshow of 25 pictures. On some, I used Ken Burns effect to zoom in, out, etc.
When I export, the result is a .mov file. Everything looks great when I play it on Quicktime, except for some of the photos on which I had used Ken Burns (meaning there's motion). The bad ones don't render properly, and are "jerky" for lack of a more technical word. They get stuck for a couple of seconds, jump forward, get stuck again, etc.
Amazing thing is that I did an export out of Quicktime using Sorenson3, and that seems to have smoothed everything out in a nice way. Result is a movie with no jerkiness, and everything works right.
Two questions:
1) Can I count on the Sorenson3 export method to fix the jerkiness for three other iPhoto slideshow-based movies I'll need to generate, or was this a one-time fluke that Sorenson3 fixed this movie? In other words, is there a principle behind the fix that makes sense and can be counted on?
2) What caused the jerkiness in the first place? Is there something I can do so the original output from iPhoto on Ken Burns photos isn't jerky?
Thanks for any insights.
iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Kirk,
Did what you suggested, with some tweaks, and it's working nicely. Exported at 3MB/sec -- 2MB didn't render well enough. Tried MPEG-4, and then Sorenson again, and actually the Sorenson worked better for some reason.
So thanks, and now I have one follow up question: My next step is to convert the file to .wmv format so it plays on Windows Media Player. Must do this for a project at work -- where people are on PCs using WMP.
I purchsed Flip4Mac a while ago for this purpose, and that's what I intend to use. Can I simply convert the file exactly as is to .wmv -- keeping all the goodness of the settings that are now working? Will this be an export of an export that will damage the quality of the result?
Thanks for your thoughts.

  • Iphoto slideshow to idvd: quality & burning issues...

I've made a few slideshows in iphoto due to the Ken Burns effect and also the ability to choose full screen or widescreen. I made DVDs for friends with full and myself with wide for my widescreen- and that works fine.
My question is about the quality of the movies. Obviously a substantial loss of quality from viewing the show in iPhoto on my Powerbook...
Is there a better way to do this with better results? Using iMovie? (Never have used that app before..) Each show has 100-250 slides and I choose a music playlist from iTunes. I am a quality freak and looking the uncrisp images isn't too thrilling.
(Even when playing the disk image in the DVD Player on my Powerbook and comparing with the original project file- it's a little more fuzzy.)
Also, I just got an external Lacie burner (I have combo drive) and have much unsuccess with burning. I have repaired permissions and create as a disk image in iDVD. It plays back great from the disk image in DVD Player on Powerbook. This specific movie is 2.4 GB and I have 10.1 free dis space.
Problems: (tried with 2 or 3 different movies)
*Disk Utility will not burn the image. It begins and then stops and says there are errors (not specific)...
*iDVD goes through 4 or 5 steps and right at the end says "Errors during burning"
(I was also getting a multiplexing error, but I freed up some space and didn't get that last time)
*TOAST- Using the DVD-Video from Video-TS (as recommended on various boards) does not work. It finishes but won't verify and nothing plays...
*TOAST- using DVD-Video: The menu made in iDVD isn't functional. Can't choose different slideshows... Won't highlight, etc...
    *TOAST- using "Data" DVD-ROM (UDF):
THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT HAS WORKED AND PROJECTS ARE ABLE TO BE VERIFIED. MENUS ARE FUNCTIONAL IN MY 2 DVD PLAYERS...
I have the newest versions of Toast and iPhoto and iDVD. It's been very frustrating. Can't figure out why iDVD and Disk Utility won't burn... and TOAST only works using "Data" instead of Video... My Powerbook is a 60 GB 12" G4 1.33 model. I'm so tempted to upgrade to a bigger hard drive and a Superdrive but I don't know if that will help anything.
    Thanks for listening!

Video DVDs are 720X480 (NTSC). Much lower resolution than straight iPhoto slideshows and your original photos. Nothing you can do about this until either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray technology come to the market and are affordable.
iMovie will not be better resolution after it is sent to DVD. You could export to HD resolution QT files (H.264, etc.) and play those on computers with QT and keep higher resolution. But those won't play with commercial DVD players.
Disk Utility will not burn the image.
Can you verify the mounted image with Disk Utility?
Can you burn other data DVDs with the finder and with Toast succesfully?
You should be able to use both the Video_TS drag into DVD-Video for Toast and the direct image burn in Toast, as well as Disk Utility. I wonder if there is an error in the image, so see if you can verify the mounted image with DU.

  • Remove fade in/out from iPhoto slideshow export?

I'm bringing in some pictures from iPhoto and I've had bad luck with photo resolution when I used iMovie to import the picture and apply Ken Burns effects, etc. I've seen some suggestions here to use an iPhoto slideshow export instead.
I have my settings for 1 second slides, no transition and a ken burns effect. I'd like to make an export for each picture, but iPhoto insists on opening the slideshow with a fade in and closing with a fade out. Is there any way to prevent this? I'd like to add the transitions in iMovie instead.
(I realize that the iMovie forum might be a better place for this so forgive the crosspost)

Thanks, I think I'll skip the Ken Burns for now since I've had nothing but problems with it. My issues before were that 1) iMovie would play the images in sequence just fine during playback but at export would mix up the order. 2) The resolution on the pictures was absolutely terrible. I have a new movie now and haven't seen either problem.

  • Ken Burns rendering corrupted/static images

I seem to be having an issue with imovie 6.0.1 , where when I add a new photo to my movie (either from the media/photos/iphotos options, or from dragging and dropping from a seperate folder), the resulting 4 sec rendered clip comes out corrupted, with grey static lines across (i can't see the picture at all). Looks sort of like static on a tv.
I'm using standard sized JPEG files 2032 * 1524 from a Kodak camera. Although, I have noticed similar problems from diffrent sources.
I've tried using diffrent imovie settings, mpeg4, dv, etc.
The problem seems kind of random where the clip might get rendered correctly one time, then the next it wont. Sometimes, the rendered clip comes out tinted red. The tintind red seems to be specific to another source : one scanner that I used.
    I didn't have this problem with imovie 5 , before I upgraded.
Even upon exporting the movie to say a quicktime clip, the problem stays is persistent in the final clip.
At first glance (and Im still testing this), the images get correctly rendered when I export the images from iphoto to a seperate folder at a different resolution and then add the photos from there. This is kind of tedious, because I routinely edit photos in iphoto, and I don't want to be exporting them every few minutes. Nor do I want to export my entire iphoto library.
Perhaps Ken Burns has a issue with certain Jpeg formats?
    Any possible solutions?
    Thanks,
    Vic
1.42 Ghz PowerPc Ibook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Thanks for the help,
I tried exporting to the same resolution, but that didn't fix the problem.
Doing any sort of editing on the picture (say croping it), does appear to fix the problem.
I've tried using other photo sources (digitial cameras), and it seems to me that photos taken with some digital cameras don't get this problem where as photos from other cameras sometimes do.
It seems that the Ken Burns renderer doesn't like JPEG's coming from certain cameras, as soon as these JPEG's are resaved by a diffrent program (say iphoto) the problem is fixed.
Atleast thats what I think the problem is, Im not 100% sure because this corruption problem doesn't always occur, its seems sort of random.
Also the problem appears diffrent then the problem mentioned with imovie 4. For one thing the static lines are horizontol vs. vertical, and the mentioned work around doesn't fix the problem.

  • Ken Burns rendering stalls

    Hello
I already mentioned this in another topic, but it seems that I'm confronted to a totally different bug that the one that started that topic.
So here is my problem : I can't import photos with the Ken Burns effect anymore.
When I click on the "Apply" button of the "Photo settings", the photo is added to the timeline but the rendering doesn't start (no progress with the red bar). When I want to save the project, I get an error message telling me that there are 2 active rendering process, although iMovie is only eating 2-3% under the Activity Monitor.
The rendering also stalls when I'm adding photos directly from the Finder to the "Clips" window.
I got the same error on any project (MPEG-4, DV...)
    So I tried :
    - repairing the permissions
    - removing any third-party effect plug-in
    - removing any Quicktime plug-in
    - trashing any iMovie related file (app, prefs, plug-ins, support files..) and re-installing, then trying version 6, 6.0.2 and 6.0.3
This had absolutely NO effect !?
Although I was pretty sure everything was working fine a couple of weeks ago, I even checked the Quartz Extrem-compatibility of my video card (Radeon9200) -> that's OK.
I have no clue about what's going on except this strange message in the console each first time I'm trying to import a photo with Ken Burns effect during an iMovie session :
Oct 12 18:18:46 JPS /Applications/iMovie HD.app/Contents/MacOS/iMovie HD: GraphicsImportGetColorSyncProfile was called for an image that has a ColorSync profile, but the base graphics importer will perform ColorSync matching, so a generic profile is being returned to avoid incorrect matching. To opt out of automatic ColorSync matching and access actual embedded profiles, set the kGraphicsImporterDontUseColorMatching flag.
What can I do in order to be able import photos with the Ken Burns effect again ?
    Thanks for any suggestion.

  • Jerky ken burns zoom

i made slide show in iphoto, used some custom ken burns, then when imported to idvd6, the zooms sometimes are jerky when previwed in idvd; also, what i see on the preview in slide show i photo isnt always what ends up happening........

When you empty the iMovie 6 Trash, there's a bug that (inappropriately) discards the copy of the source image iMovie stores inside the project. That makes it impossible to Update the clip later. When you try, that turns the clip black.
Lots more here, with some workarounds:

the audio associated with that set of photos was a piece of music off of an audio CD that had been transferred to iTunes for the purpose of making this section in the DVD. It's not a big problem that the music didn't transfer, since I can add it back into FCX. Thank you so much for your concern and help. This was a very key bit of info that you provided me. Thanks again. bill

  • Jerky Ken Burns when burning to DVD

Hi all - tried finding an answer to this but not much luck - anyway the problem is I made a simple movie in imovie 08 using only photos, music and Ken Burns effect on some pics. the presentation runs smooth as silk on my iMac 24" - so then I try burning the movie to DVD using iDVD. I slot the DVD in a player and it looks very average. The picture resolution is low - should I export to a higher level of resolution? Then the Ken Burns effect is jerky - not massively but still not smooth. Please help I really want to be able to export/burn movies that look great and run smooth but can't find out how to do this,
    thanks in advance
    Rob

I have the same problem. Ken Burns looks good on the computer but real jerky on the DVD using iMovie 8.

  • Jerky Ken Burns effect

I am using iMovie 10 on a mac desktop with all the latest software. In some photos in my 4 min video, the Ken Burns effect is jerky, even after sharing the video to a .mp4 file. The photos are of good quality and resolution (I use iPhoto). Is there a way to smooth the zoom effect?
I made a sample clip (5.7MB) but can't post it here, apparently.

Even though my stomach turns when people call a move on a still "The Ken Burns Effect," I'm going to supress my revulsion and try to assist.
The blurriness MIGHT come from a pref "Default Scale to Frame Size, which makes the scaling on all your imported / placed images 100%.  This is a defect in the way Pr was built, IMO.  There's no good reason for Pr to think a huge photo is 100% scaled, just because it fits nicely in a Comp view.  It misleads users into thinking they're out of resolution, when they're not.  So, my first suggestion is to turn off that pref (uner General) and see the difference that makes when you know exactly how much resolution you have to deal with.  Then, don't go over 100%.
I can't envision the jerkiness you're describing.  It could be an interlace issue, from how you describe it.  If that's the case, render progressive.

  • IPhoto Slideshow Export Settings for FCP 7

I made a slideshow using iPhoto '11 that I need to import into Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 so that it can be merged into a longer sequence with a few other things that will eventually be burned onto a DVD using Studio Pro and then set to play in a continuous loop.
My question is, what settings should I use exporting out of iPhoto? The photos were all taken with a Canon 5D. The sequence that I'll be importing the slideshow into will also have a sequence in it that was shot using the Sony HXR-NX5U. So, the native settings for that clip will be 1920x1080, square pixels, 23,98 fps, Apple ProRes 422 codec. I exported my iPhoto slideshow to match the settings as best as possible - 1920x1080 HD 16:9 was the closest option. I think the one difference is that the slideshow plays at 30 fps while the sequence matches the main video at 23.98 fps.
My issue is that the slideshow plays fine in iPhoto and even as a stand-alone movie loaded in QuickTime, but once I import it into Final Cut, I get motion artifacts. Even if I bring the slideshow into its own sequence, with the sequence settings matching those of the slideshow, the artifacts are still there. I can get rid of them using the Flicker Filter, but is there a way to resolve this issue during the iPhoto export? Should I be Deinterlacing the source video, leaving it as a progressive movie or selecting interlaced scaling? If it needs interlaced scaling, should I select upper or lower?
Or, are there better settings to get this slideshow to play better in Final Cut?

Yes. What we're setting up a booth at an upcoming event and have some promo videos we made, as well as the slideshows. The purpose of bringing them all into FCP was so I could put them all together in the timeline and export them as one big movie, which I'd them bring into DVD Studio Pro and set it to loop over and over.
Unless, of course, I could keep all the movies separate and create a "Play" button that plays movie #1, but modify the end jump to go to movie #2. Modify the end jump of movie #2 to go to movie #3, the end jump of movie #3 go to #4 and have the end jump of #4 go back to #1.
Would that work? If so, I can just put everything into Compressor.

I saw the reply about using Classic theme to stop Ken Burns effect in a particular slideshow but is there any way to stop the cursed effect across the whole of iPhoto? This and the playing of music ought to be settable as defaults in iPhoto preferences with the opportunity to override for particular slideshows.

No. You have to deselect it for each slideshow you create, Send a feature request for being able to turn it off globally to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.

New to me - just created a squence with multiple pictures and clips, all moving, keyframing, time-remapping, etc. Great results ... customer satisfied.
    But to answer your question:
Exporting your clip (KB pic) via quicktime should do the trick. Export as full quality DV.

  • Iphoto slideshow exported for iweb viewed by windows

I have been trying to publish an iphoto slideshow that I had exported as a movie for weeks. My mac people can see it, my PC family members cannot! I tried to make it small for the web, changed the filename to mp4 from mpv4, but PC people still could not see it. So I tried to put the slideshow movie in as a huge .mpeg and it disappeared. ( I had made an avi file but it looked horrible so used the equally as large but better ,mpeg)
I am getting the idea that it can only be done with imovie! Is than an authoritative step by step on iphoto 08,quicktime pro, and Iweb so I can put all these things together?

Don't use the Finder to change the file extension. Not only is it folly but it breaks the links used in your iWeb page code.
Don't use AVI. It is a dead container discontinued by its authors (Microsoft) years ago.
    Don't use MPEG-1 (1991 format).
Default exports from iPhoto to QuickTime formats use the newer H.264 video codec which requires any machine (Mac or PC) have QuickTime version 7 installed. If they can't install version 7 they can't view your file.

How can a slideshow produced in Iphoto be exported to windows vista format.
I have been able to produce the slideshow in IDVD which can be played on a dvd player, but I need to produce the slideshow so it can be read on a windows pc
    Can anyone help me please

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Can't the Vista computer play the DVD?
Another possibility is if you have Quicktime Pro. You can export the movie to Windows Media format and Vista should be able to read that.
