IPhoto slideshows - randomly rotating images.

Hi People, can you help?
I've put photos from my Nikon onto the hard drive and imported some into iPhoto v5. I then rotated the ones needing it, but when I run a slideshow the rotated images sometimes appear correct, but then appear rotated again, sometimes squashed and sometimes the correct aspect. What the heck is going on please?

KB:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Does your Nikon have a auto rotate option? What version of iPhoto are you running? With an auto rotate camera a tag is written to the file to tell the application to show it rotated but the file itself is not. iPhoto 5.0.4 corrected the problem of iPhoto not reading and interpreting that tag properly. However even with 5.0.4 sometime if you are to use one of those files in an external application like Word, etc. it will revert back to the unrotated view as Word does not read the tag.
This may be what you're experiencing, particularly if you're not running 5.0.4. If you are and the files were imported in an earlier version you'd still have the problem. So you may have some of those auto rotated images that were imported before and after you updated to 5.0.4.

  • Slideshow in iMovie - images w/movement don't look as good as in iPhoto

I love iPhoto with the Ken Burns effect, but I had problems that when an image would dissolve up, the position would be in an undesirable spot (image might be with a person's head cut off). I tried working around the problem by giving the images very very wide black borders. But this didn't help. Also, when I've burned an iPhoto slideshow to a DVD using iDVD, the image quality fell off (perhaps because TVs aren't as good as my monitor).
By going to iMovie it was great to get all the controls I wanted, BUT I find the image quality not as good, even on my HD Cinema Display. Is this too be expected? I tried changing the frame rate, but that hasn't helped. I was concerned that it might be because the image file size was too large, but I have ruled that out (I think).
I created a quicktime movie and still the images don't look nearly as good as they do in iPhoto with Ken Burns effect (so it's not about the movement and my screen resolution and refresh rate - unless iMovies is changing things).
I would so greatly appreciate any information on this. Whether it is to confirm that, yes - through I photo, slideshow images look better. Or, to say "iMovie slideshow images should look great - you need to change these settings....."
Thanks so much fo your help, Leo
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I'm not sure, but maybe you hit on something I'm
doing wrong. I've not taken any care in how I've
been getting images into iMovie. I've taken in
images through the clips section and I've taken it
through an ALBUM in iPhoto. Are you saying I need to
have the images in a slide show in iphoto so that I
can import them from there with Ken Burns on - that
does something to the images!? Wow.
Note that the Ken Burns Effect in iPhoto has nothing whatever to do with the Ken Burns Effect in iMovie. Configuring the KBE in iPhoto affects ONLY that iPhoto slideshow or one of its slide, not the iPhoto images you import to iMovie. (Actually, slides in iPhoto slideshow slides are never imported to iMovie, only the images in non-slideshow albums.)
As photos are imported into iMovie the iMovie KBE is applied to those images using the KBE settings you've configured in iMovie.
ALSO - I have to be honest - I never knew that Ken
Burns was customizable! If this is the case, doesn't
it mean that KB doesn't have too be random. Can't I
establish start and end points for the whole show and
    it will be repeatable?!
Yes, making them all the same is possible, but variety is the spice of life, so you probably don't want all slides of the iPhoto slideshow to look the same. I find the random KBE in iPhoto surprisingly effective.
It's also surprisingly easy to spot the slides where it's probably going to point at someone's shoes or do something that looks ridiculous. Configure those manually.
I suppose the big draw back of so carefully
programming a slideshow in iPhoto is that you can't
    save it to a disc.
Actually, you CAN save it to disk. Export the slideshow to iDVD and iDVD puts a copy of your slideshow — as a MOVIE — in the Movies folder. You can import that movie to iMovie if you want. Or use QuickTime Pro to export it in a compressed format to share with friends.
But before I give up on iMovie (and the hours and
hours I've spent in making this show), perhaps I'm
missing a good way of saving the project. I have
made an iMovie project which plays in iMovie and is
labeled as DV-NTSC and I've created a quicktime .mov.
Is there a better option? You say "The DV is better
than you see displayed in iMovie". So is there a
way I should play this DV project in another
    application that would be better?
You can export the iMovie project to any kind of QuickTime movie you want, large, small or anything in between. High quality, low quality or whatever.
Thanks so much for your help. This has been great
    help.
You're welcome. Good luck on your project.

  • How does iPhoto handle rotating images? 'Revert to Original' Issue

I use iPhoto for all my images, and need to get my head around how it stores images, particularly when edited. If I rotate a photo, for example from horizontal to landscape, then I think it stores the old version, and the new version. I can use the menu to 'Revert to Original' - which shows the unrotated image.
According to iPhoto, my library size is 24.8gb.
According to Finder, the library size is 34.2gb
I would like to reclaim this nearly 10gb back, as if I have rotated a photo, I do not need the original version! It would also be nice to change the iPhoto behaviour, so when you rotate an image, it does not create a new file.
I have heard of iPhoto diet, but that does not work reliably for newer versions.
I use iPhoto 7.1.4 (the latest) and any help or advice would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The best way to do what you want for future photos is to upload the photos from the camera to a folder on the desktop, rotate the file there before importing into iPhoto. There are 3rd party applications that can losslessly rotate image files. Also do not turn on the Auto-Rotate feature of your camera if it has one.
For those that are already in the library the only way to do what you want is to replace the original file with a copy of the edited file inside the library package and then do a revert to original on that file.
To facilitate replacing the original files with a copy of the edited (modified) files put all of the files you want to replace into one Event. That will put them all in one folder within the Originals folder and Modified folder. Then copy the contents of the Modified subfolder into the corresponding Originals subfolder.
You run a big risk of damaging the library if an error is made during the process. It's really not recommended. In other words *proceed at your own risk and make a backup of the library before proceeding*.
The reason the finder reports a larger library is that it is reporting the original, thumbnail and modified files as well as the database, cache and data files.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Is there a way to rotate images in iPhoto on the ipad

I take photos with the iPhone or iPad and unless I sync them back to the Mac, there does not seem to be a way to rotate images. This makes having a nice slideshow (for the unlock screen) a problem as a bunch of images are all sideways. I'd like to be able to do simple edits like this in the device and not have to sync back and forth.

You can't in the Photos app itself, though there are third-party apps that allow you e.g. PS Express (though the saved rotated version of the photo will be put in the Saved Photos album).

  • How to auto rotate Images on Full Screen Slideshow if pictures were taken mixed Portrait and Landsca

In Muse: How to auto rotate Images on Full Screen Slideshow if pictures were taken mixed Portrait and Landscape

There is no way that Muse would automatically rotate the images. What you can instruct Muse to do is whether you want to show all image content and leave blank space in either direction OR scale the image to fill the frame resulting in some cropping, but filling the otherwise blank space.
The options are Fit Content Proportionally and Fill Frame Proportionally respectively.

  • Iphoto 9.6 rotation of grayscale images

If I import grayscale images into iPhoto 9.6 (under Yosemite, in this case) (either Tiff or JPEG, 8- or 16-bit), iPhoto corrupts the images if I rotate them in iPhoto.
To see it happen, I merely:
Create a grayscale image (I use vuescan, but it will also happen if I save an image out of Photoshop CS6 as grayscale).
    Import it into iPhoto 9.6
    Rotate it (command-R).
Now either toggle between thumbnail and full-size view or edit the image (again, I use photoshop here).
The resulting image will be corrupted (probably either all-black or all-white, but it can show up other ways as well).
Anyone else have this problem? The workaround is to import RGB files, but of course that's not ideal if your source files

Thanks, Leonie; these are indeed taken with a photographic camera, but are single-channel. Previous versions of iPhoto have had complete support for grayscale images, and this version attempts to do the rotation but corrupts the image, so I interpret that behavior as a bug, rather than one of no support.
Have you really been able to work with single channel gray scale images?  I know, that iPhoto and Aperture can work with gray scale images, as long as the gray scale is part of the color profile or an EXIF tag, but at least in Aperture you cannot do much with single-channel images, other then import and export them, or view them. The same goes for PSD files, or any file format with alpha channels and layers. As soon as transparency is involved, it cannot even be displayed correctly. That is even mentioned in the technical specifications. http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/
Aperture maintains but does not display layer and alpha channel information in PSD files.
I suspect, that iPhoto has the same limitations, because both applications are sharing code and the unified photo library format.

  • IPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?

iPhoto Slideshow: Sometimes the slideshow starts at the last image, rather than the first. How do I ensure the slideshow commences at the first image?

Is this a slideshow played directly from an album or Event or one created in the slideshow mode?
If it's the former that's been a problem for a many users. There hasn't been a firm fix found for it as yet.
There is a workaround.  Put the photos in the order you want, select them all and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to Text menu option.  Put in Slide and check the box to add a sequential number to give you Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
Now when clicking the play button at the bottom of the Album or Event window the slides will play in the order Slide-01, Slide-02, etc.
The best workaround is to use the iPhoto slideshow mode to crate the slideshow. There's been no reorts of similar problems in that mode.

  • I need help with iPhoto slideshow.  I can't "save" changes. Particularly the rotate feature.  I rotate a photo 90 degrees... and the next time I play it...it's back to original.  Sideways!  Very frustrating.

How do I save changes on iPhoto slideshow.  I rotate a photo... then it reverts back to original (sideways) next time it plays.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
is your slideshow from an album or from the slideshow mode?
    what theme are you using?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal)  from iphoto slideshow?

I have tried the iphoto forum and have been directed here. Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal) for an export from iphoto slideshow? I want to export 200+ photos with random transitions and the ken burns effect. Imovie offers offers automatic ken burns effect via project properties but I can't find a way to add random transitions automaticcally. Is it possible? I want to add the exported file to a movie in Final Cut Studio. Normally I have to resort to using adobe photoshop elements 5 and premiere elements 3 on my bootcamp partition. I would love to do this all in Mac OSX - since leaving Windows, this is the only thing that forces me to use that lousy operating system!
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have tried the iphoto forum and have been directed here. Is there any way to get 720x576 (ie DV Pal) for an export from iphoto slideshow?
Not directly. But you can do it with a bit of external help. Create a slideshow project in iPhoto using the "Random" transitions and auto KBE you want. Then export the slideshow as a 640x480 MPEG4/AAC 30 fps full motion MOV file. Drop the file to MPEG Steamclip and select the "Export to DV" File menu option. The select the DV format, PAL standard, and aspect you want. (I would normally select the "Frame Blending" option in the main menu when going from 30 fps to 25 fps.)

  • Using Keynote and iPhoto slideshow together

    Computer: 12" Powerbook G4, 1.5ghz
Display: 23" Apple Cinema Display (1920x1200)
    Software: OSX 10.4.9, Keynote 2, iPhoto 6
Hi everyone! Above are the specs for the project I'm working on and here's the problem I'm having:
I am trying to create a makeshift kiosk display for an upcoming event using slides in Keynote and a picture slideshow in iPhoto. I'm planning on running it off my Powerbook to my 23" Cinema Display.
I'm using Keynote for the presentation content because of the motion effects (transitions, build-ins, etc.) and iPhoto for the image slideshow because of the Ken Burns effect (which I don't believe Keynote has). Both look great running seperately, however when this is being displayed at the show, I'll need both to run back to back automatically, without having to manually switch back and forth between applications.
I have both the Keynote presentation and the iPhoto slideshow displaying at 1920x1200. I've tried exporting the iPhoto slideshow to Quicktime, but it won't export any higher than 640x480. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make this work? I won't be able to operate the computer when this is running, so I really need to find a way to make everything run seamlessly while keeping the high resolution of the 1920x1200 monitor.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    -Steve
    PB 12" 1.5ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

iMovie is a DV editing app and the final results would still make a 640X480 file.
I would change a few things to make everything work together:
First is the display resolution. You want the 23 inches to be used so just reduce the display preferences to try and match your QuickTime file. 800X600 sounds about right but larger will still work as H.264 Video scales up in size very nicely.
This would force you to "reduce" the dimensions of the Keynote file but that shouldn't be much of an issue.
QuickTime Pro could also be used to "change" the dimensions of the 640X480 file. Again, H.264 scales up in size and would look pretty good at even double size.
The goal is to have them both at the same dimension and then match the monitor resolution.
Easier to change the display than the files.

  • How to put Titles in iPhoto slideshows

I truly love the slideshows I create in iPhoto with music...
"BUT", I'd also like to add a brief comment before, during or after the slideshow, and I've found this impossible to do.
Is Apple waiting for the new upgrade to address this problem?...
I've gone into my wordprocessor "Appleworks, and text-edit", hoping I could then export/import the titles into iPhoto, but to no avail...
I enjoy creating slideshows with music, then burning them, then playing them on stereo sound television, and its a total blast for me when I view my creations.
So, Apple, or readers on this site, please help a poor old man towards the path of enlightenment, for life can truly be beautiful with "titles"...
    Thanks to all...

    Terence,
Don't know if you misunderstood my problem, but today, I found the solution to putting titles into iPhoto slideshows, and its pretty simple also.
I don't know how to enter a link here in order to include the directions on how to create titles in iPhoto..
But, briefly, create the title in any wordprocessor.
    Take a screen shot.
Drag it into an iPhoto icon
Then, drag the icon into the iPhoto library.

We have no idea what enhancements - if any - are
planned for iPhoto. What you want to do cannnot be
done with iPhoto unless you use a third part editor
to create images with the comments, and import the
images into iPhoto and then incorporate them into
your slideshow. There are other apps that can caption
and use comments. Check out PhotoToMovie from

  • Iphoto unable to import images from card or from desktop

A recent update to the operating system for my imac with Maverick has rendered my iphoto incapable of importing images, creates a mirror shift of the frontpage as it is opened up and requires a long time for iphoto to open. When I try to import a photo from the desktop or from a card the program spins into dysfunction and I am forced to force quit. Program functionality seems to be impaired as I look for images, select, etc. Permissions verified and fixed in Utility disk. Restart computer several times.....I would be grateful for assistance. Kind regards to the community.....HP

Well that suggests the issue is with the main Library. So
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Displaying iPhoto slideshows on external display

I'm trying to get my wife's MacBook Pro w/ iPhoto '09 8.1.2 to display the slidehow on an external VGA monitor. She's using the miniDisplay port to VGA adapter. The symptom of the problem is a slideshow on the built-in Display (OK) but a black screen on the external display.
    Current workaround:
The slideshow plays fine on the external VGA display when "Turn on Mirroring" is selected in Display Prefs.
    BUT....
She doesn't want to turn on/off mirroring every time she wants to show photos. There's no settings in iPhoto that I found that would specify using an external monitor. Quicktime Player DOES allow you to do this. Does this feature just not exist for iPhoto slideshows? Was the slideshow function only intended for a few people to huddle around a computer screen? Hopefully it's more than that.
My wife's comment was "MS Powerpoint is smart enough to display my PPT presentation on the external display, why isn't iPhoto smart enough to do the same thing for slideshows."
I think this is a reasonable expectation of Apple iPhoto but the solution eludes me. I really don't want to have her use the export function in iPhoto as this seems like an unnecessary waste of hard drive space and time. It seems like the feature is sooooo close to being great but it's not (Apple had enough foresight to include an instant slideshow function).

    Greetings,
As you pointed out, iPhoto supports mirrored display mode. In extended desktop mode, only the one display is used (this is normal).
When I want to use an external display / projector / TV with my images:
    __Use Quicktime player
__Use an AppleTV to stream iPhoto content directly to my TV
__Use Keynote (Apple's Presentation software kinda like MS Power Point) to play a presentation
If you would like to see iPhoto support extended desktop mode submit feedback from within the iPhoto Application:
    iPhoto > Provide iPhoto Feedback
    or
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
    Cheers.
