IPhoto spinning ball - at the end of my rope

I can't get iPhoto to load. Every single thing I've tried results in the spinning ball of death.
I've tried:
rebuilding the library
creating a new library on another drive
using iPhoto Library Manager rebuild
restoring the picture library from a back up made before I was having problems with it.
rebuilding thumbnails
removing the .plist and .lock file
creating a new 'empty' library and that locked up too.
Nothing is working and I'm very frustrated.
I've got several gig of space on the drive, so space shouldn't be an issue.
I downloaded Picasa and tried using that, but it locks up, too. What the heck is going on?
I don't know what else to do. I'm thinking I'll have to move all my photos, years worth of them, folder by folder and just put them on another drive and delet iPhoto and start all over again. I don't know if I'd lose any meta data of the pictures if I did that.
Looking for some help, please.

That suggests that an external or 3rd party software is causing the problem.
Boot normally and then lauch Console (in your Applications/Utiities folder)
Then Launch iPhoto and see if any messages get written to it.

  • Just get the spinning ball all the time in FCP

When I use Final Cut Pro (newest update) I get the spinning ball all the time when I do ordinary things like dobbleclicking a videoclip (DVCpro HD) or a sequence.
If I try to force quit FCP it seems like it quits, the report problem to Apple screen appears, but I have to force shutdown the whole computer, because even after I have force quit FCP, it still appears like it is running in the dock, and I am not able to start it again before I have restartet the computer.
I had this problem earlier, so yesterday I formated and reinstalled the whole system, but the problem continues. Its quite frustrating that I cant use Final Cut Pro on my new MacBook pro, 2,4GHZ, 4GB ram.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • When I open aperture it opens then after a minute I get the spinning ball and the program freezes

When I open  aperture it opens, after a minute I get a spinning ball and the program freezes.

Try holding down the Option and Command keys while opening Aperture. Click Rebuild Database. Dumping preferences couldn't hurt.

If you tried resetting the ipod and it still keeps having the same issue you described, try setting the ipod to disk mode.
Here is an article from the apple support website on setting the ipod to disk mode.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
If you can get the ipod into disk mode, connect it to the computer and rrestore the ipod using itunes.
if the ipod will not go into disk mode, you can return the ipod or set the ipod up for service via the apple ipod service depot.

  • Coloured spinning ball replacing the cursor in documents and settings

    Hi
I have bought an iMac today and this is the first one I have had so I'm very new.  I clicked on settings and then into desktop and screensaver and I was clicking down the menu.  As I clicked on places a coloured spinning ball replaced the cursor and now I cant get out of it.  If I cmd and Q nothing happens.
Is there anyone who can help?

The spinning beach ball indicates the machien is waiting for a process to complete. If you continue to have problems I'd suggest using your AppleCare telephone support. When you purchase any new Mac it comes with 90 days of free AppleCare support. After 90 days you can purchase AppleCare which extends the warranty from 1 year to 3 years and also includes 3 years of telephone support. I'd STRONGLY recommend buying AppleCare.
If you don't know how to contact AppleCare then click
Contacting Apple for support and service.
In addition please complete your Profile, without a profile getting help becomes increasingly difficult as we have no idea which iMac you have, the verison of OS X, where you are located etc.... For help completing that please click Profile Update

  • 6.0.5.20, at the end of my rope

I installed 6.0.5.20 and it has not allowed my 5G or Nano to connect to iTunes. All I get is the message: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not istalled correctly. Please reistall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
I've tried reinstalling it. I've tried removing and reinstalling it, I've tried the McAfee firewall (it has full access to iTunes), I've tried the Quicktime standalone install, I've tried the MSCONFIG setting, I've tried removing iPod updater 2006-28-06, I've tried sending an e-mail to Apple. I can't restore my iPod, because now I get an "iPod service error" when I try to run any updater, new or old. Absolutely nothing has worked.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm at the end of my rope with this.

Ok, I solved my problem. Here's what I did: I went through all the steps in the article linked above and nothing seemed to work. Part of those steps has you remove iPod stuff from your computer. I would follow the steps for "Removing iTunes." From what I could figure out, it was the iPodService.exe that was causing my problem because it would never show up under the "Processes" menu in the Task Manager. I downloaded version 6.0.4 from oldapps.com. Then I reloaded my iPod software from the CD that came in the box, my Nano had iPod update 3-26-06 on it. When I opened iTunes, everything worked fine. My God it took forever to get that done. I've been working on this for a week.

  • Motion is so slow - spinning ball all the time!

I took a class in Motion recently and they used iMacs at every station.  I never got a spinning ball.  I've got a 12 Core with 16GB of RAM and I can't scroll a window without getting a spinning ball.  Every tiny adjustment takes forever!  Another thing, when I select an effect or track, sometimes the HUD doesn't update until I click around a bit.  Just now it's started holding a single frame of video regardless where I put the scrub bar on the timeline.  The motion tracked box moves when I scrub but the picture beneath is a freeze frame.  Wait, I take that back, it seems to be playing at 1 frame per minute.  This is not a complicated composite either.  One shot with a motion tracked TIFF file on top.
I've restarted, checked permisisons, trashed preferences.  Nothing helps.
I'm editing HDV.  I'm using internal drives for all media and applications (different internal drives).  All my software is up to date.  Is there anything I should check?  Any settings?  Any likely culprits?
    TIA,
    Pete

To Michael's checklist I'd add this: are you using the download version of Motion? If you are, it's possible there may be some sort of conflict with FCS. If you're still getting beachballs, consider reinstalling Motion…using Apple's "best installation practices".
I too don't like to work in HDV, but on the occasions I have, I've not encountered anywhere near the difficulties you describe.

  • Spinning ball while the hard drives warm up

    Hi guys,
I have a G-Tech 1TB (Firewire 800) hard drive, a 500GB (Firewire 400) drive and two internal sata drives (not striped together) I also have a wireless keyboard and mouse.
If I leave the computer alone for a few minutes, each time I return to FCP, I have to wait for the spinning ball to stop. It sounds like the hard drives are warming up again, but its really annoying having to wait so often. I am working in a long project of 90 minutes length, but this also happens in shorther projects as well.
I have unchecked the 'put the hard drives to sleep as often as possible' and set the energy saver to 1 hour but no difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks as always.
    Stephen - UK

you can minimize occurrences of the SBBOD due to hard drive sleep by making BOTH of the following selections in the Sleep tab of Energy Saver preferences:
    1. select "Never" for System sleep, and
    2. de-select "Put the hard drive to sleep when possible".
in Tiger, this is GUI equivalent of sending the "pmset" command in the terminal with the argument disksleep 0
or you could just jump straight into the terminal app (/Applications/Utilities/) and use the command
    sudo pmset -a spindown 0

  • At the end of my rope with recent upgrade

I just bought the recent upgrade it's 2.0.1. Anyways before I bought it and updated my ipod everything worked perfect. My favorite thing to do was sit outside on the ipod surfing the net. Well now that I updated it I can not get online. I can connect to my wifi which works no problem as I am on a computer right now using wifi but I can not access the net, youtube, itunes anything at all. If I am lucky I can load apple.com or gmail.com but that is it. If I click on a link it will not load another page. I have googled like no tomorrow to fix this and nothing has worked. Here is what I have tried.
    - Reset by holding down home and power
    - Taking off all applications I had downloaded and doing a complete restore putting the ipod back to factory settings and then syncing minus the apps as the apps and the 2.0.1 is the only things new on my ipod.
    - I have tried messing with the settings under the connection on the ipod as suggested in some sites I found.
    - I have tried changing my secruity settings on the modem, unplugged modem and reset modem even though modem has nothing to do with it since I still get online on my computer.
    - I have tried forgetting network and refinding it, I have also tried renewing it.
I am so fed up. I want whatever was on it before 2.0.1 back since I could get on the internet then. I bought the ipod back in december so support will do nothing for me if I called them.
Please Help!! I am ready to throw the thing out the window.

I understand that you are trying to help. I came to realize that it must be a sig or something that automatically attaches at the end as it is no longer in more of the thread it is always at the bottom of the thread. I am so fed up with this stupid thing. I have tried everything it seems and everything mentioned in this thread. I got the IPod beside me to try each new suggestion. I can't go to an apple store as we do not have one here. I am ready to call apple and force them to deal with this in the morning. I got enough on plate I don't need this added stress even as minor as it is in the big picture.

  • Is anyone else having iPhoto spinning ball after upgrading to the 27''

iPhoto has become really sluggish and clumsy in editing, transiting to the next photo viewing, even sizing the window. All this since changing from the 24 to the 27. No new app/internet/ add-ons. Deleted the iPhoto preferences. Using an ethernet cable rather than wireless (although it is enabled). And yes there is the flash choppy-slowdown and Safari intermittent sluggishness too. I migrated all my previous settings. Finally I know this isn't the iPhoto discussion but thought its inclusion here was justified relative to the new iMac. I'm really relying on the next 10.6 point upgrade as a resolution. Thanks. d

iPhoto seems OK, but iMovie seems very sluggish in my case...

  • Spinning ball all the time? new final cut?

    Hi there,
After spend 300 dollars in the brand new final cut X, i notice that i also have a free spinning colourfull beachball?! yes in the previous version i never add so many hang ups and so time waiting for some operations, i have, as u can say the best comfiguration tha a imac can have until a year ago, 16 g of ram and a i7 processor, well the best on a imac.
Now and after a expatation i notice that its far for the desire result and i need help to try to resulve this bugs or not.
Hope to have any news, from someone and especially an update to fix from Apple

I'm running it on a 15" MacBook Pro and I get constant beach balls, they seem to get more frequent the longer I have the app open, and ultimately I have to force close and restart my computer because the whole system bogs down.  Very aggravating. I have a Core 2 Duo and only 4 GB RAM, so I understand it would run slow, but after about an hour of editing, sometimes less, it becomes unusable.

  • When I try to print from Illustrator CS3 the program unexpectedly quits. I don't get anything happening other than the spinning ball and the quit message.

Is this because the application is so outdated?

Thanks for your help Monika. Yes, the printer is is supported by the system. The printer is about 2 months old and the driver were installed then. I called Canon support and they said it sounded like a problem with Illustrator. I can print the same file by saving it as a pdf and printing from Acrobat Pro, so it seems to be a problem with Illustrator. If I try to print the pdf from Illustrator it will quit.

  • No Sound Device/Playback Device --At the end of my rope

First let me state that I've tried several methods to fix my problem already, and none appear to help or work, I've followed the advice given by several others, and I'm really not sure what I can do at this point. I even bought a new Soundcard thinking it would solve the problem...but it has not.
If I were to go into Device Manager right now, Windows detects TWO Audio Devices:
    Soundblaster Xi-Fi Extreme Audio
Vinyl AC '97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
The latter I can easily disable in BIOS on Startup, but this does not help me one bit.
I have checked my Sounds and Audio Devices:
No Audio Device/No Playback Device/Sound Recording is Soundblaster/Midi is Creative SoundFont Synth/No Voice Playback/Voice Recording is Soundblaster.
I have checked my Services (Local):
Windows Audio Service is "Started" and set to Automatic?
I have checked other media devices and get errors regarding "Direct Sound" or "Wave Out".
Regarding the programs related to my drivers, I have tried to uninstall them and reinstall them in Safe Mode but this has not helped. In particular one of the programs VIA Audiodeck (related to my onboard audio) cannot seem to find certain files to uninstall itself, aside from the fact it couldn't run when I installed it in the first place. (In part I'm looking for a free program that can uninstall stuff that can't be uninstalled the usual way).
Finally I've discovered I'm getting errors in trying to check for Windows Updates (even though I have Service Pack 3 now). Windows Automatic Updates says it's "On" but doesn't show up.
I don't really know what the root of my problem is, as I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling my drivers several times (even attempted to?clean up the registry from leftover fragments). I've used programs like Belarc Advisor and Driver Scan but these don't tell me what to do or how to proceed. I'm at my wit's end here.

I'm not sure what anyone here can do
Nothing. These are user to user forums, of which Apple employees do not take part in.
Does anyone know who I can EMAIL about this,
Nobody...Apple does not offer email support/correspondence. Call support and ask immediately to speak to customer relations.
