Iphoto stopped working.  Is there a limit to the number of pictures it can hold?, Iphoto stopped working.  Is there a limit to the number of pictures it can hold?

My wife has a base model MacBook Pro with iPhoto installed.  She has about 1,400 pics most of which are about two meg in size along with a bunch of HI Def videos.
Iphoto now has stopped working.  I am wondering if it might be that the computer is just out of working memory and can't manoever.
How do I fix the problem
I have reinstalled Iphoto from Ilife  and placed the old librarary of pics etc on the desktop.

Did you place the new bookmarks in the Bookmarks Toolbar folder?

If new bookmarks do not show then a possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"
    Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My iPhoto requires an update to work but when I update it there is an error.

    Hello,
I’m having problems with my iPhoto. I used to have the iLife of ’09 (which I believe is version 8.0). I recently updated my macbook pro from 10.6.8 to 10.7.2 then through Software Update I updated my mac to 10.7.4. I’m not sure if the update effected my iPhoto or not because I never checked it. I then updated my iLife to that of '11. My GarageBand and iMovie worked fine but every time I clicked on iPhoto it wouldn’t open. Instead I would get a little textbox saying:
“In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latest version.
Please run Software Update to install it now.”
I couldn’t even view iPhoto’s settings or anything. I knew that iPhoto had updated only because I would go to Applications then click on iPhoto’s Get info, which would tell me that I have the 9.0 version (iLife of ’11). So I proceeded to update my iPhoto through Software Update but just as it neared completion the update would stop and I would get a textbox saying:
“The update “iPhoto Update” can’t be installed. The update could not be expanded and may have been corrupted during downloading.  The update will be downloaded and checked again the next time that software Update runs”
I have tried everything I have read on iLife Troubleshooting Basics (even though it only fixes iLife '08 and '09 because I can't seem to find fixes for '11) http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3249
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

No you don't have to rebuy iPhoto 11.
    Try reinstall it.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I like to manually upload my photo's to my computer, then import them to iPhoto. My problem with this is that now I have duplicates and it's taking up way to much space on my computer. Is there any way to stop iPhoto from creating duplicates like this?

I always manually transfer photo's from my SD card to a new folder under Pictures, and then import them into iPhoto. After doing this for quite some time I know realize that I have all these duplicate photo's between iPhoto library and Pictures and a ton of wasted space. I want to continue to upload photo's to a new folder so I can organize them myself and then access them anytime through the finder, if I upload them through iPhoto then they're stored in "iPhoto Library" which can only be accessed through iPhoto. Is there anyway to stop iPhoto from duplicating photo's and just use it to catalog photo's from Pictures? Also on a side note, when using multiple SD cards in one folder, my camera often comes up with duplicate names for totally separate photo's, anyone have an suggestions for this?

Yes you can set iPhoto to run in Referenced mode but don't. It makes more work for zero advantage, is unnecessary and only storing up problems for the future.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3062728?tstart=0
has how to do, and why you shouldn't.
Using iPhoto makes the question about the filenames moot too... Other than that you'll need to renae the files.

  • Iphoto has recently stopped working; it continually shows the loading circle. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it, updated it

Iphoto has recently stopped working; it continually shows the loading circle. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it,updated it and reinstalled all my apps with the ‘applications install DVD’ however it still does not work. I have also tried holding the command and option key while pressing iphoto then when the pop up appears i press the checkboxes that have been suggested by other users however nothing happens. Any other suggestions would be great!

Ok the program itself is likely fine, it's the files it depends on that are not.
    Step #1
1: Open your Users/Library/Preferences folder (if on Lion you need to use the Go in Finder)
2: Scroll down until you see a file called
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
3: Trash it and reboot, start iPhoto and see if it works.
    Step #2
1: Go to your Users/Pictures/iPhoto Library and right (or hold option) click on it and "show package contents"
2: Inside will be a folder with your originals, copy them out.
3: Move and rename the iPhotoLibrary file outside of the Pictures folder.
4: Reboot and restart iPhoto, check inside the Pictures folder if iPhotoLibrary was created.
5: Download ClamXav and run a scan on the Original photo's and your whole machine too while your at it.
(it's if there is a picture in there from Windows it could contain a corruption caused by malware)
6: Reimport the originals back into iPhoto.
See if those two steps resolve your issue, if not I could suspect next a network issue? Like iPhoto is trying to contact the internet and can't or gets hung?
You can can create another user, use the Shared Drop box to transfer files and log into the other user and see if it's a issue with just your User account, and if so you might just want to transisition over and then one day delete the old user and it's problems.

  • I have a macbookpro. when I connect any camera to the mac it does not show as a device. How do I load my pictures to either iPhoto or Aperture? It worked before but just stopped working. Any suggestions?

I have a macbookpro. I use Aperture and Iphoto. When I connect any camera to the Mac it does not open it as a device in Iphoto, Aperture or in Finder. It use to work but just stopped. Any sugestions?

Here is the full story. It may be long so please bear with me. I take a lot of pictures and movies. Since I have over 30,000 pictures I decided to place the Iphoto library on an external drive to save space on my internal drive since ot was getting very full. After I did that it worked fine for a while. Then one day I could not open the Iphoto library. Since I was overseas at the time I brought it to the IStudio ( not an Istore) overseas. They said to rebuild the library and they would do that for me. It took all day since I had so many pictures. When they called me and told me it was ready, I went to pick it up. They started to show me the new library. It crashed again. Not knowing how to fix this at the ISudio, they installed Aperture and imported the Iphoto library. This worked fine for a short time. When back in the states, it crashed again just like Iphoto. I took it to the IStore. They did not know why the overseas Istudio did what they did what they did  and rebuilt my aperture library. Again it worked fine. Now that I am overseas again. It crashed again. However, I concluded that the reason for these crashes is becuase I have the file on an external drive that derives its power from the Mac and not by itself. When I use it and stop for a while the MAC will go to sleep and this cuases the external drive to shut down. This then causes the library to have inconsistancies. Therefore, when it happened this time I tried to repair the library and after 36 hours it would close down Aperture. Therefore I decided to rebuild the library. That did not work either. So I tried opening the Aperture library with Iphoto. That seemed like it was going to work but after importing half of the 30,000 plus pictures. I photo shut down. I then made a new aperture libary and erged the old library with it. This worked. I now have an aperture library that works. However, when I plug my camera into the MAC nothing happens. The camera does not show up in devices in either Aperture, I photo nor in Finder. The USB port and cord I use works fine becuase I can read my external hard drives fine. I checked as SIG suggested in this thread and everything is set to open aperture when the camera is connected.
I have the newest OS version 10. 7. 2 and the computer frequently updates all my programs. I have not installed any ne software lately. The problem happens both if I am on battery or plugged in. Just before I came overseas the IStore replaced the Battery.   I can go back to the IStudio  here overseas but the last time I was there and told them about the problem ( I did not have my computer with me) they did not impress me with their wisdom. I will be back in that city in a month and can go there if need be.  Thanks for all the help so far. God bless.

  • IPhoto 5.0.4 has suddenly stopped working. It loads the photo library and then freezes. Rebuilding the library has no effect which has about 3.5MB of data. PowerBook G4 OS 10.5.8

iPhoto 5.0.4 has suddenly stopped working. It loads the photo library and then freezes. Rebuilding the library has no effect which has about 3.5MB of data. PowerBook G4 OS 10.5.8

Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts or Users & Groups on 10.7)  and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Upgraded to OS X 10.9 and Slideshow in iPhoto stopped working (stays on first slide; will not advance)

Upgraded to OS X 10.9 and Slideshow in iPhoto stopped working (stays on first slide; will not advance)

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database followed by Option #1 to reapair permissions if #4 doesn't help.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If still not working log into another user account on your Mac and try a slideshow from there.  If it works there then the problem is limited to your account. If it fails there it's system wide and may require a reinstall of iPhoto or the system.

  • My iPhoto after a big clean, stopped to work. What should I do to get it back working ???

    Hello,
I'm having big troubles to use my Iphoto. A while ago I did a big clean of the library so I transferred all my photo in a esternal hard disk and then I cancelled all the pictures from Iphoto. After that , my Iphoto stopped to work as before. Now it get stuck once I open a picture and it is impossible to slide my pictures and to make corrections. What can I do to have back my Iphoto working ???
    PLS HELP !

Restore from your back up from before you did this "clean up" is the simple solution. Other than that:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.

  • Sync from iPhoto just stopped working

Hi, both of my apple tv's stopped syncing any further content updates, leaving a little triangle with an exclamation mark next to them in iTunes. Existing content was still there though.
Further investigation showed that if I turn off syncing of photos (from iPhoto), the triangle/exclamation mark goes away and syncing resumes. Photos were set to sync first, btw.
I haven't updated my photos in iPhoto recently, and it doesn't seem correlated with any updates to software (last update was 24th Sept) for iTunes 7.4.2
It seems like iTunes is having problems digesting the iPhoto collection if I had to guess, but it seems to be showing the albums etc just fine for selection in the Apple TV sync tab(s).
Any thoughts? Any way to find out why it's showing the little triangle (it's clearly figured out there's a problem but isn't reporting what it is)?
    cheers
    I'm using iPhoto 6.0.6

ahah! I have the answer. First to answer your questions:
    1. Firewall is off
    2. Hadn't got that far yet
    3. Is there an automated way to do this? I saw this mentioned in the forums whilst researching this issue, but in iPhoto 6.0.6 I see no facility other than to go in and do this by hand. Is it an option in later iPhotos?
And so to the answer. I looked for files in my iPhoto library modified in the last week and tried removing them one at a time and putting back when iPhoto didn't work. Turns out if I remove the iPod Photo Cache directory, my Apple TV is fine and dandy once again syncing photos.
I assume iTunes pre-prepares the photos at the correct resolution for the Apple TV (and for iPods, iPhone etc) in here and somehow this must have become messed up. Not sure how that happened.
Ah well, one to try if anyone else suffers a similar issue.
    cheers

  • Clicks stop working after opening iPhoto or App Store

Everything works fine until I open iPhoto or the App Store (could happen with other apps, but these two for sure) then "clicks" stop working, My cursor moves and some items highlight, but nothing will "click"... I can't select photos, can't click on Download button, can't click to All Events, etc. Tasks can be accomplished with keyboard shortcuts. In App Store, I can't even highlight to try to click. Once these apps are opened, mouse clicks no longer work in other apps.
I've tried switching from Magic Trackpad to a Logitech Nano mouse; same thing happens.
Using Mac Pro & Mavericks. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec bash
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IPhoto slide show stopped working, just showing the first chosen picture, the same with the sound. iPhoto 9.5.1(902 17), MacBook Pro and Maverics. How to solve this problem?

iPhoto slide show stopped working, now showing just the first chosen picture, and the same with the music. iPhoto 9.5.1 (902.17), operating system Maverics 10.9.2
    How solve this problem?

There's a bug with iPhoto 9.5 and Mavericks in that slideshows from Albums do not play correctly if they are sorted manually.  Only photos that have been sorted by date, keyword, rating or title will play from albums correctly.
To have a slideshow with photos sorted manually use the slideshow mode in iPhoto.
