IPhoto storage on WD My Book Live

I have a WD My Book Live backup storage.
I followed the procedure and did a backup of my iMac.
When I access WD backup from my iMac or from my MacBook or iPad, the document folder and then a document opens instantaneously.
If I open the backup iPhoto folder the iPhoto template appears on the desktop screen and I can then go off and make a cup of coffee while it loads.
To change to a differant album the loading takes for ages.
Can you help?
Henry

It's very simple. You can't have an iphoto Library on Networked storage.
Put it on a USB/Firewire?Thunderbolt disk directly attached to the Mac and formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Problem solved.

“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
So you have the performance issues... can the dataloss be far behind?

  • HT201250 Time machine don't recognize my western digital MY BOOK LIVE nas as backup disc

Been trying to fix up western digital MY BOOK LIVE network attached storage to work with my MBP. But during time machine configuration, my network is not included in the backup disc available. This is even though my nas can be seen in my finder under shared.

    Hi,
I already looked over several posts and forums without any success.. therefore I post my question here.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Yes, we've seen a few posts where some NAS devices are doing that. It appears that either they didn't follow the requirements correctly, but earlier versions of OSX let them work anyway; or the requirements have changed but the makers haven't updated their software.
That, unfortunately, is one of the downsides to using 3rd-party products -- Apple may say it's WD's fault, WD may say it's Apple's.
You might want to check with WD; 10.6.4 has been out for about 2 1/2 months, so they've probably heard of this by now, and may have an update or workaround.
Or, if your Mac is covered by AppleCare, it might be worth a call to them.
Sorry not to have better news.

  • View cover art wd book live nas iTunes

Hi, i have bought a WD Book Live 3tb network storage device, i have transferred all of my itunes library to the NAS drive and because it has a itunes server, itunes detects it and i can play my files. All of my music have the cover art embedded into the files, because when i view them in the finder i can see the cover art. But when i am browsing my library through itunes none of the cover art shows up even though it is embedded into the files? can anybody help me get my cover art to show? thanks

trial and error but i think i got it.. this worked for me running OS: 10.8.3, iTunes: 11.0.3
On your computer hard drive (running your OS) go to your music folder in finder and "IF" u have a folder called "iTunes" rename it to iTunes2 or whatever u what don't matter.
Create new iTunes by holding down opt key while opening iTunes. It will ask you to create or choose.  press "Create Library..."
U will need to name…. save as: "iTunes" and the saved location HAS TO BE ON MAIN HARD DRIVE running your OS. This folder cant be saved to external hard drive ONLY MAIN HARD DRIVE and the name HAS to be "iTunes". It wont work with any other name
If you have large music located on external drive then u will need to go to preferences on iTunes and change "iTunes Media folder location" to your desired location on your external and MAKE SURE TO CHECK BOTH BOXES... ( the actual "iTunes" folder containing Album Artwork, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml ect has to be located on main hard drive running OS that the trick)
Adding media back to new iTunes--- so IF your original media is located on the main drive then go to the new "iTunes" folder that was created in your Music folder on main hard drive and there is a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes"  all u do is just drag the folder holding all your original media to that folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes"and it will automatically move that original file and organize it to the new iTunes folder….So FYI  any media on the same disk will not get doubled when u add to folder it will only organize file but if it located on different disk and you drag file to " "iTunes Media folder location"" located on main hard drive then it will double that file
Adding media to new iTunes if the original media is located on EXTERNAL drive----. Pretty much its the same but back on step 4 if you saved  "iTunes Media folder location" to external folder... then that folder has a folder called "iTunes Media folder location"" …. So if u add any media saved on that drive and drag to that folder it will just organize and move that original file only……
So now in iTunes when u press "show in finder" for music it will show artwork and when u just search with finder it will show artwork for music file. Hope this help this issue bugged me for a long time apple tech was no help.. hope this works for others

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Can an iMac be used for WD My Book Live safepoints?

I have a Western Digitial My Book Live network drive.  All Mac's and PC's can read/write without a problem.  I would like to create a safepoint (WD term for backup) on an iMac but can't seem to get past correctly discovering the devices on the network.  The MBL can 'see' the shares on the XP PC but nothing on the Mac's.  Unfortunately the XP PC is not suitable for backups.
Can a Mac be used for MBL safepoints?  If so, how is that accomplished?
Yes, I've posted this same question the WD Support and WD Communities but no responses.  Most MBL Mac users posting on WD forums are using them for Time Machine.  I thought maybe someone on the Apple forums might have solved this problem.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Mike

I am having the same issue.  Did you ever find an answer?  I see no one ever responded to you.  I have a WD cust service Tech support question submitted but no answer yet there either.  Thanks for any info you have.
    I get the error
30000 - Unknown error. Retry your last operation. If the error persists, contact WD Support for assistance.

    Hello Lara,
have you already called Apple and explained your current situation, because I don't see a way to downgrade your storage plan with a Mac only running Snow Leopard and without a iOS device running at least iOS 5.
    Best regards.

I upgraded to Maverick and now Time Machine will not connect to the external hard drive to back up files.  The external hard drive is a Western Digital "My Book Live" 2 TB.  How do I solve problem?

I also had problem accessing my WD MyBookLive after upgrading to Maverick.
To resolve the problem, I used  Connect To Server (Cmd K) to specify the IP address.
Then I enter a user id and password I created in the MyBookLive.
You can also verify that you have admin access to the MyBookLive using Safari or Chrome.
Just enter the MyBookLive IP address as the URL.

Try Old Toad's solution here:   See   Re: iphoto : upload impossible to print a book
Try to boot into Safe Mode and order this way, or sign into a different user account and try to order as a different user.

  • Transfered photos from IMac with Iphoto 9 to a mac book with Iphoto 11 now Iphoto 09 errors out saying "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto."

Transfered photos from IMac with Iphoto 9 to a mac book with Iphoto 11 now Iphoto 09 errors out saying "You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."  We have not updated or changed anything on the IMac all we did is transfer photos. Any help would be appreciated.

LarryHN is correct. The only way this message occurs is if the iPhoto Library database is upgraded to a newer version.
You could try holding SHIFT-OPT-COMMAND when launching iPhoto from the dock and checking only "Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" and hope it restores the previous database prior to the upgrade.
If that doesn't work, you can install iPhoto '11 on your iPhoto '09 computer. If I understood the iPhoto '11 Mac App License agreeement correctly, you can install it on any personal, non-commerical computer you own running 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7.

Sometimes USB external drive problems are resolved simply by plugging them into the mains power and trying again.

  • IPhoto '11 crashes on assembling books

I have a number of books in iPhoto '11. Some of them were created in iPhoto '09, one was created in iPhoto '11. The last time I ordered a book was in February (2011). Everything worked flawlessly then. Last week (April 7th) it has become totally impossible to order, preview or create a PDF from any book. In other words: iPhoto crashes upon assembling the book (mostly when working on page 2 or 3 of any of the books).
I have tried all possible things to make iPhoto work again:
    1. Trashing the plist files.
    2. Repairing and rebuilding the Library
    3. Re-installing the application (from the App Store).
    4. Restoring a Time Machine backup of the Library file dating from February (when there were no problems yet).
    5. Creating a totally new Library file, importing one single set of images (30 TIFF files), and creating a new book with them, using the default settings and letting "autoflow" do its work.
Every time the book is assembled, iPhoto simply crashes. I have sent multiple Error Reports. Until now there is no solution or fix available...
I urgently need to order about 20 copies of my existing books and start work on two new ones! So please, does anybody care to try and help me order my books before my deadline (end of April) will be gone and before I will start using Blurb (and never look back again to iPhoto...)?

I've just read that a re-install of SL will keep my files and settings, unless I would choose for the option to erase the disk and do a clean install.
However, before I do this, let me tell you the following. I now remember that, last Friday, I had an issue with adding/deleting pages in iPhoto during the creation of my latest book. At a certain moment, the overview was showing me a book without any back cover... I couldn't revert to a previous version, so after trying several things (a.o. a "duplicate book" command), I finally decided to delete the corrupted book and create a new one from scratch. I have now also found a PDF of the very first version of that book, dating from last Thursday (the day when I started working on it, i.e. the day before iPhoto showed me the corrupted version with no back cover).
That means that iPhoto was still functioning correctly until last Friday. However, as I have told in my first message: I have tried to solve the issue of the crashes with a restored backup of my iPhoto Library (from before Friday) and with a re-install of iPhoto (from the App Store), to no avail...
Now my question: it could well be that this corruption of the book, showing no back cover, and thus being unable to be "assembled" by iPhoto for a preview or PDF or order, started to cause the iPhoto crashes. Any idea what file(s) could be involved (apart from the obvious iPhoto Library)? I did already trash the .plist preference files, as I said in my initial message.

  • My Book Live Duo Remote Access

I currently have an iMac and use Time Machine to back up my desktop to a My Book Live Duo External Drive.
My Book Live is supposed to allow for remote access to files. When I click on WD2go app, I can see the public shares as well as the Time Machine Share. However, when I try to see the files in the Time Machine Share remotely, I don't have files that can be accessed.
I know the back up is successful because I can see the files on the external drive when I am on the desktop. Does Time Machine put the backup files in a certain format such that I can't see them remotely on my iphone or ipad.
I also have a Windows desktop that also backsup to My Book Live Duo. I use the WD Smarware to backup that desktop. Unlike the Time Machine backup, I have no problem see and accessing the files backed up through WD Smartware.
Has anyone else experienced this problem??

I'm seeing the same pattern; Updated my system to 02.43.10-048 (from 02.11.09-053) and got a message with just ??? in Event Title and Description and nothing in the event code. An hour later I get a message about temp returning to normal (event code 2003). Everything was fine for about 30 hours, then I got ??? messages every 30 minutes followed by an event code 2003 for about 4 hours (middle of the night, no activity on the drive) yesterday I started to get a series of these with a scattering of notices of successful firmware updates (and corresponding reboots) with no change in the firmware version. We turned off auto-update. Just adding data to the thread at this point, the system is at home and I'm in the office so I can't do any real investigation on it.
