Iphoto stuck "upgrading iphoto database"

I upgraded to the new version of iphoto with Yosemite but can not get it to launch properly. It sits with the message "upgrading iphoto database" for seemingly ever. I've left it going overnight and still nothing. I've forced quit, restarted, erased and redownloaded iphoto, all with the same results. Any help or how to fix would be appreciated.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Now that I've installed Yosemite, my computer keeps telling me that iPhoto needs to be upgraded. When it starts "upgrading the database", it gets almost to the end of the progress bar, then sits and spins. It won't finish.

My computer is an iMac that was made in late 2009, and was purchased by me in 2010. It has a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I have more than 800 GB of storage available. Last week I installed the Yosemite OS. I'm having trouble with the upgrading of iPhoto. When it says it's upgrading the database, it never finishes. I've started the process a few times, and the progress line always gets to the same place when it sits and spins for hours at a time without any more progress. I thought about putting some of my 10,000 + pictures on discs to see if that would help, but I can't open iPhoto to get at them. Would that help, anyway? My son thinks this computer is too old to accept all updates. The hard drive was replaced 2 years ago.

Then the Upgrading process was started and ran for 24 hours before I finally Force Quit. BTW, iPhoto didn't show up as Not Responding, but I figured there was some glitch and Force Quit. THen started up again and now 12 hours and counting. Am I missing something?

hello, it sounds like the library is damaged.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Upgraded iPhoto. Constant thumbnail rebuilding.

Since upgrading iPhoto, it is now constantly rebuilding thumbnails at startup, and telling me there are missing files.
If I press cancel, it goes to the next and the next etc etc, and eventually opens, but will do the same thing if I close and re-open iPhoto.
If I try and find the photo, I can't. It might have been renamed or something. I don;t know. I tried rebuilding the Database. No dice. Repairing Library. No dice.
I am so fed up of every time I upgrade one of these core apps, it flakes out on me.....
What can I do ? I suspect the only thing I can do it to create a brand new library and start from scratch, losing all my ambums, etc etc.
Also, that would be very hard to do as I have a 60GB iphoto library. I have no space to keep that seperate while importing and creating a new one.
Am I stuck or is this a "genius" bar visit ?

in the iPhoto preferences is the preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library checked (default) or have you unchecked it (strongly not recommended)?
So since upgrading the old error has gone away and it not constantly uncessucessfully tries to rebuild thumbnails?
I have not had this error since trying to upgrade.
What changes were made just before the not found error started happening?

Photos do not appear in iPhoto after upgrade

Hi,
I have searched around and no one else seems to have encountered this problem. I upgraded my apple to a iMac with Leopard and iPhoto 08, from an old Tiger machine. I moved the iPhoto library into Pictures and then loaded iPhoto. I agreed to allow iPhoto to upgrade my library. I didn't notice at that point whether all the photos were in the library. I have imported 38 pictures from my camera and now, for some reason, these are the only photos in the library.
When I look inside the library package, it has all of my photos in various places, and is almost 5GB in size, so I know the data is there. I have rebuilt the library, using cmd-option-iPhoto, but this has not changed anything.
Does anyone have any idea as to what is happening, and what I might to do rectify the problem?

Do you still have a copy of the old library on the other machine? If so you can try the following;
1 - move your current library to the desktop.
2 - copy the old library into the Pictures folder.
3 - run iRepair on the library as described below.
4 - launch iPhoto and convert the library to the iPhoto 08 format.
If that goes correctly you can then locate those 30 photos in the library on the desktop and import them into the new library. This will let you maintain your keywords, comments, slideshows, etc. from the old library.
Here's how to run iRepair:
Run iRepair on your iPhoto LIbrary package as follows:
1 - download iRepair and launch.
2 - click on the lock and enter your admin password
3 - click on the Select button and navigate to and select the iPhoto library.
5 - set the owner to your short admin name with read, write and execute privileges.
6 - set group to staff or the current group with read, write and execute privileges
7 - set others to read only
6 - click on the Apply button.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. IPhoto stuck on "Loading photos"

Hi everybody! Hope you can help me. Once I click on iPhoto it opens iPhoto window, but just gets stuck staying "Loading photos" with a wheel that just keeps turning. Im using iPhoto version 6.0.6. The last thing I did using this program was to upload pictures. I left iPhoto on all night, but still found it saying "Loading photos" the next morning. Also tried to look through others posts, but my iPhoto version seems newer than theirs. Would appreciate your help. Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If smtr's suggestion doesn't not clear up the problem try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist. Then launch iPhoto and see if it will open OK.

Upgrade iPhoto to open iPhoto library after installing iLife 6

I am a real computer novice and just installed iLife6, which I should not have done because now I have no access to my iPhoto library. It tells me I need to upgrade iPhoto to open the library so I selected "upgrade." Then it tells me there is a problem with some of the files and I need to go to Finder, click Get Info and be sure ownership & permissions are Read & Write in the iPhoto Library. I have tried that repeatedly but it tells me I don't have privileges for all I am trying to access. But I am an administrator on the computer, and every possible file I have opened is now Read & Write. But I continue to be stalled out and still cannot open iPhoto Library. I tried copying the iPhoto library to another computer with iLife 6 already installed, and it tells me some of the files in iPhoto can't be imported because they are in iPhoto Library. I am so confused, and now would like to just remove iLife6 from this computer to get back to my original iPhoto so I can access these Photos but I don't know how to do that either. Does anyone have any ideas at all that can help me please?

Give this a try:download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. Launch iPhoto and try to update the library again.

IPhoto 11 upgrade trashed my library

While upgrading iPhoto 11 to version 9.4, the upgrade would complete about 75%, then cause my iMac to reboot. After several attempts the upgrade completed. However, my iPhoto library is gone. When I start iPhoto it prompts for a library name, or to create a new one. So, I tried restoring my ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library folder from a time machine backup, but that did not restore my library. So I guess the question becomes, why isn't restoring the iPhoto Library folder working?
This is the reason I would never trust housing my precious photos and videos in an application like iPhoto, Aperature, Photoshop, etc. Eventually it's going to come back to haunt you!
Don't get me wrong, I love iPhoto for editing, uploading, creating albums, etc. But I just drag whatever I want to work with from my photos on disk, and of course photo stream is awesome.

Next you'll be telling me that data and files are not stored in a database becase the database is on the file system.
Have you ever looked inside one of these libraries? They they all are, files in folders, just like your set up. For an "engineer" "in the IT business since 1989" you really don't know very much.
Every application is owned by someone, even Unix, and so every application is "propiatory" (sic).
I wonder if you're trying to say that the data is stored in proprietary formats. Well this is where you're wrong. They are not. SQL is an open source format and the actual photos are stored in exactly the same way as they are imported. You can open, read, edit and access any iPhoto database with a Text Editor. Jpegs are stored as Jpegs, Raws as Raws, Tiffs as Tiff etc. They are not changed or altered in any way. Quite the whole point of these apps is that the process losslesly and treat the master as a film shooter treats the negative. It's never touched.
So, can we be clear, there are no proprietary formats used anywhere in these Libraries.

I've been on this forum a while and I've seen all the posts from people who "cannot recove (sic) their photos, movies, from iPhoto of (sic) iMovie"... yes but have you ever bothered to read the answers? Obviously not. One of the great things about these apps is that - because files are just stored in the file system - you know, like you do - they can be easily recovered if there is no back up. So, they are as safe as your files are.
You can go for years without a problem, then one day, corruption can render your photo library useless. Evidently you'll have to learn that the hard way.
1. That's why I have back ups. I'm amazed that an 'engineer' with vast experience in the IT industry didn't have one.
2. You're obviously unaware of how iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom work, I understand the mistake you're making. It happens with lost of people, many of whom are not 'engineers'. The fact is the photos are stored in the file system, exactly as yours are. Therefore they are as safe as yours are.

Trying to upgrade iPhoto library

I’m trying to up prepare a v7 iphoto library for use in iphoto v9.5.1. When I try open it I get an error message that says “To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader available from Apple.” Then I have to quit or learn more. I downloaded the library upgrader from apple, but when I try to upgrade I get the message “Your library can now be upgraded in the current version or iphoto. Do you want to launch iphoto?” My only options are to quit or launch iphoto. When I launch iphoto I’m right back where I started, with it telling me to use the upgrader. I’m stuck!

Yes, I ran the upgrader. That's what gave me the message “Your library can now be upgraded in the current version or iphoto. Do you want to launch iphoto?” It wouldn't actually upgrade the library, just forced me to open iPhoto which in turn gave me the original error message. I did some more internet research and found a 3rd party program called iPhoto library manager which I used to rebuild the iPhoto library and that worked like a charm. I still feel like there should be a more straightforward way to do it within the iPhoto software though.

Ever since my last upgrades, every time I try to open iPhoto, a Alert box pops up saying, "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared. To prepare the library, use the iPhoto Library Upgrader", and it gives 2 options: a "Learn More" button or "Quit" (iPhoto) button. The "Learn More" button links to Apple's "iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader" page (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5037), but whenever I then download and run that page's linked app, the same thing happens all over again.
It does no good to rebuild the iPhoto Library (holding down the command & option keys while reopening iPhoto): the same thing happens.
