Iphoto suddenly doesn't recognize my photo library

Yesterday, I created a slideshow and showed it on our TV via the s-video output and screen mirroring. When finished, I returned the screen settings (ie resolution) to what it had been (1280x854).
Today, when I opened iphoto, a message appeared "Screen resolution is not optimal for iphoto". The only option was to click "OK" which I did. After clicking, the slideshow that I had created appeared in iphoto but there was no way to open my other photos/events. I subsequently tried to import a few extra photos from pictures. They were imported but the rest of the library did not appear. I subsequently deleted them. Now whenever I open iphoto (by clicking on the iphoto app. or on the iphoto library in Mac HD), the screen is blank and there is an indication of "no photos". However, if I click on iphoto library in the HD without opening it, library size is listed as 14 GB. Also, if I click on "search all images" all of my photos appear and can be opened by Preview. What is going on, how did it happen and how can I correct it?
Thanks, Gordon Kus

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the iPhoto Library - which is in your Pictures Folder, by default. If iPhoto sees a valid library there it will open it. If it doesn't then you have a damaged database file:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums back.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • My iPhoto '08 Doesn't Recognize iPhone4 photos and Videos and cannot import

Tried to import photos taken with my ip4. I got an error message:
"The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type of the files may not contain valid data).
and it then lists all of the files. So photos are taken with the hipstomaic app and some are straight iPhone pix. Some vids too. Nothing is recognized by my iPhoto '08. However, they appear to be fine on the iphone itself.
Any suggestions? I need these photos for professional use and not having them is a huge problem. Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks

Same problem here. iPhone 4 arrived yesterday and so far can't sync properly with iPhoto. The machine seems to take a while to recognise the phone and have to disconnect and plug in sometimes for this to work. Long term mac user on my third iPhone and really ****** about this given I upgraded primarily for the better camera and video. It's pathetic! I've had the same problem on my 2008 MBP running Leopard and iMac running Snow Leopard. Any suggestions for fixes or posts from people having similar issues would be great.
Butterman, the only thing you could do I guess is email individually or download an app that accesses the iPhone file structure. I have one on my machine somewhere but can't remember what it's called ;-S

  • I have suddenly become unable to access photo library  iPhoto (vers 9.5) on my external drive.  And time Machine will no longer back up to the same external (LaCie) drive.  Appreciate all suggestions.  The drive does show up on my desktop....

I have suddenly become unable to access photo library (iPhoto vers 9.5) on my external hard drive.  Also time machine isnt backing up to same external hard drive (LaCie).  The drive does show up on the desk top, but when i open iPhoto the library isnt listed, so I cant option click.

First, one should not try to run an iPhoto library from the same volume/drive that is being used by Time Machine for backups.  TM will continue to fill up the drive thus squeezing out iPhoto from being able to be opened and used. Also that doesn't allow you to let TM backup your library as it does with other files on your boot drive.
If you partition the EHD into two separate partitions you can run the library from it but that won't let TM backup the library which is important.
Are you able to see the library on the EHD via the Finder?  If so copy it back to your boot drive and open it there.  You may have to do some fixing on it.
Solution is to either run the library from the boot drive or get a second EHD to run the library from and let TM back it up along with your boot drive.

    Hi There!
The camera is a Panasonic Lumix. I don't have a USB card reader. I did try and different port although not a different cable.
I did remember one additional thing. I plugged my camera in at work to a PC. It was after that, when I came home, that the iPhoto wasn't working when I connected my camera to our iMac/iPhoto at home. I think this may have caused the problem.
    Cheers!

  • IPhoto 11 doesn't show the photos that I just imported from an SD card, but says its importing to library 15 min after SD card is removed.

iPhoto 11 doesn't show the photos that I just imported from an SD card, but says its importing to library 15 min after SD card is removed. The import seemed to start normally, I went to mail to check messages, came back to iPhoto & the usual prompt about wanting to delete the photos on the card never came up. The photos didn't show up in events or the library & the device icon wasn't showing so I tried to import again. A prompt then came up saying that I needed to wait until the import was done!

Hi, this problem is also happening to me also. I just took some pics of my daughter on my nikon d3100 and imported them from SD card to iPhoto. It says 'preparing to import' but during the process i do not see the photos being imported. After it was done, there was a new event album, i clicked opend it to see my photos but all of them were blank. I forced quit and re-launched iPhoto but it didnt work, i even re-imported, not to no avail.. Please help.  Earlly 2011 13' MacBook pro 10.7.2

  • IPhoto app doesn't show any photos from my photos app

I just upgraded my new iPad to iOS 6 beta. Maybe that's the problem but suddenly my iPhoto app doesn't show any photos at all. All the tabs (albums, photos, events, etc) are empty.  When I open the app it says "updating photo library" briefly, but that's it. I tried rebooting, deleting the app and reinstalling it, basically everything I could.  Is this a known iOs6 bug?

Ok, I have the release and I have the issue, photos are just boxes w no pictures, is there a way to remove library and reload? The photo app works fine and all pictures are there.

  • IPhoto '09 doesn't recognize my Lumix DMC-ZS3

iPhoto '09 doesn't recognize my new camera, a Lumix DMC-ZS3. It pops up on iPhoto as "NO NAME". I am able to import photos from it without a problem, although I have not done any videos yet, so I'm hoping this won't be an issue.
Anyone else having a similar experience with their Lumix?
Any way to get rid of "NO NAME" and get iPhoto to recognize the camera model?
Any advice/tips about using this camera with iPhoto?
    Thanks.

I am having the same problem with my new Panasonic ZS3. I am able to import pictures through iPhoto, but when I open iMovie ('09) and sync up the camera a dialogue box pops us saying "Looking for Cameras and Devices" and below it says Panasonic DMC-ZS3 (seemingly recognizing the camera). This runs for about 30 seconds and then it disappears (apparently never fully recognizing the camera). It never pulls up a screen with the videos on the camera available to be downloaded. After this dialogue box runs, I have tried clicking on the camera button on the toolbar and it says "No camera connected-to import video please select a camera". The Lumix has the option of shooting HD video in either AVCHD or Motion JPEG. I shot several videos in the AVCHD (which I thought iMovie would support) but they are not coming up! I am going crazy trying to figure this out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • My iPhoto images won't show, and Photo Library Repair will not open when I command-Option-click on the iPhoto icon.

Some of my iPhoto albums will not show, as below:
When I click on any of those individual albums, for a brief split second I can see the images displayed, but then they revert to this:
Then if I click on any of those images, this image appears:
I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening. Each time I do it, iPhoto just opens as it normally does. I've tried about 10 times, closing iPhoto completely. I've tried through the dock icon and through the applications listing. Neither will open anything other than regular old iPhoto.
Can anyone help me and suggest what I may be doing wrong, or are there any alternative was to open Photo Library Repair so I can rebuild my library? I really don't want to lose all of those photos, especially since some are really important and irreplaceable.
    Thanks.

I have real a lot of posts that say to click Command+Option while opening iPhoto and this will open the Photo Library Repair window, but... this is not happening.
Be sure you're holding the correct keys and that you're holding them long enough. Depress them before clicking on iPhoto and don't let go until the menu shows up.
If you don't want to lose those photos, make a back up now. Hopefully it's not too late.

  • I cannot view/sync albums from iPhoto on my iPhone whilst iCloud photo library is on. Why? and is there a way of doing it.

I cannot view/sync albums from iPhoto on my iPhone whilst iCloud photo library (beta) is on. Why? and is there a way of doing it. It is especially frustrating given I have subscribed to more space yet I have to turn it off to view!

I found the answer in another discussion group, so I have just erased everything through settings on my new iphone and in Backups on itunes, I have clicked on restore back up. So it appears to be working.

  • When I open iphoto the following message appears 'Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable'

when I open iphoto the following message appears 'Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable'

Reboot you system, if you have not already done so - this should take care of the "in use by another application" part of the message.
If the problem persist you will need to create a new library or to repair your library, or to restore it from your backup.
If you do not yet have any images in your iPhoto Library simply move it to the Trash and hold down the option-key while launching iPhoto again. This will give you the option to create a new iPhoto Library or to pick another one, if you have other libraries.
To fix your current library, or to restore it from backup, if you already have pictures inside that you need to save, see Terence Devlin's posts here:

  • IPhoto doesn't recognize all Photo Stream albums.

When I take a photo with my iPhone, the photo goes to my photo stream.  I then send it to my TV Photo Stream album.  The TV Photo Stream album is displayed on my Apple TV.  My issue comes when I sync my iPhone with iPhoto.  iPhoto doesn't display all my photo stream albums, i.e."TV Photo Stream"  How do I get iPhoto to display all of my photo Stream albums?  I only use one account, so I know that I am signed in under the right ID.  I am not sure were to post this inquire, should it go to Photo Stream or iPhoto?  I am not sure what App has the issue, or is it just me?  Thank you,

    iPhoto: 9.5.1 (902.17)
    MacOS X version 10.9.4
Upon opening iPhoto, it asks me what photo library I want to use. At the left hand bottom there is a box saying (translated by me from Norwegian):
"iPhoto cannot start without a photo library. Select a library from the list, find another library on the machine, or create a new library to import files into. The library you chose now, will be used automatically next time you open iPhoto."
Then there is a box with no libraries listed, and underneath I've got the options of creating a new library or simply clicking "other library".
First time this happened I created a new library and thus there are 2 libraries: iPhoto-library and iPhoto-library_2 to chose from when clicking "Other library" There is also a non-selectable (grey) "Photo Booth-library" in the same list, which is in the path user/Photos/iPhoto-library or .../iPhoto-library2. But when clicking either of these the "open" button just keeps flashing indefinitely. Upon trying to open iPhoto-library or iPhoto-library_2 from Finder, it just opens iPhoto and prompting me to chose library like before...
The only thing that I changed (I think) is that I installed PSE 12.

  • IPhoto 09 can't open my photo library

I've just installed iPhoto 09 on my Mac Mini. When I open iPhoto, I get prompted to upgrade my photo library: "The photo library needs to be upgraded…"
I click Upgrade and immediately get a dialog box saying, "There is a problem accessing one or more files in your iPhoto library. Do you want iPhoto to repair permissions for this library for you?"
Mild concern at this, but I've got a backup of the library, so I click Repair. Almost immediately I get another dialog box: "iPhoto was unable to repair permissions for the library." The only available options is Quit.
I store my iPhoto library on my ReadyNAS NV+, using AFP. I know from the many posts on here that storing photos on a NAS is not recommended, etc. I didn't discover that until after installation - I'd never questioned it. I don't have space on the Mini to install the library locally: it's almost 30GB and over 10k photos.
I can still open the iPhoto library successfully using my MacBook which I have thankfully not upgraded to 09. However this doesn't work as a long-term solution for me.
I've bought software that won't work. I don't have Time Machine running yet so I don't see an easy way to revert to iPhoto 06. Any suggestions more than welcome…

    Hey Healthily,
I fixed it! After months of not being able to upgrade and not being able to figure it out. Here's what I did:
Step 0. Watch the log in Console and you should see that it fails after a message similar to cannot lstat such and such a file. That file, in my case, was a .afpDeleteXXXXX file (where XXXXX was a string of five digits). Deleting the file from Terminal on the Mac *did not fix things* - the file seemed to stay around even though it no longer appeared with a `ls -al` in Terminal.
Step 1. On the ReadyNAS, install the ToggleSSH and EnableRootSSH add-ons.
Step 2. SSH into your ReadyNAS from Terminal. The command, if you don't know, is ssh [email protected] (or whatever your NAS' IP address is). Your password will be the same as the Frontview login.
Step 3. cd (change directory) into the directory containing the problem file.
Step 4. rm (remove) the file. I actually removed several similar files with the command: rm afpDelete - Strangely, the filename here appeared to start with ":e2" instead of a period.
Step 5. Launch iPhoto again, click through the familiar-by-now prompt to Upgrade. This time, it should work. At least it did for me finally - ymmv, but I hope it works for you too!

  • IPhoto won't import my iPhone photo library.  Help!

I just bought a new Macbook Pro, and am having difficulty importing photos from my iphone4.  When I open iPhoto, it allows me to import photos from my camera roll, but it will not allow me to import photos from my iphone albums or iphone photo library.  It doesn't even acknowledge that my iphone has any photos on it other than those in my camera roll.  Is there any way to import those?

@sig Your reply misunderstands the issue. While it is straightforward to sync photo albums FROM iPhoto to the iPhone, there is no apparent way to import photo ALBUMS CREATED on the iPhone into iPhoto. I'm having the same issue and seeking an answer, which I'll republish here when I find it.

  • IPhoto suddenly won't recognize camera

I've been importing from my camera all day because I'm making a claymation short but it has stopped recognizing it for no apparent reason. It's a jvc everio hd camera, it still shows up in the finder but iphoto doesn't say anything. I haven't changed any of my settings, so I don't understand why it stopped working. image capture doesn't recognize it either. could I imported have too many photos? I don't want to start deleting things until I've finished and the piece is safely on a dvd, just in case something goes awry with imovie.
    Thanks

Sometimes it is the answer - even on a Mac
