IPhoto "sync" from MacBook Pro to Mac Mini

Hello all,
Looking for some creative advice. We have a Mac Mini as a media server where the family likes to view iPhoto stuff as well use them for the screen saver. But my wife (the family iPhoto Manager) must have the iPhoto library local on her MacBook Pro (it is large and slow to load from a remote drive). I see the multitude of ways to share the files with the Mac Mini but as soon as she closes the lid on her MBP they are no longer accessible by the media server.
Any suggestions for a good simple Apple or third-party file sync utility that may work? Any other creative ideas?

There is no way to sync libraries. What you can do is mirror your wife’s Library on the Mac Mini - to do this, simply use a back up utility like DejaVu Chronosync to back your wife’s Library up to the Mini. Then share the Mini’s Library.
The advantage of this is that after the first back up, these apps will only copy the changes to the library on the Mini, and so it will be quite a fast process.

  • Created three new users without Apple IDs and they can't log into either of my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.

I have created three new users without Apple IDs and they can't log into either of my Macbook Pro or Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.  These accounts are for my kids and originally were setup with parental controls and time constraints.  Thinking this was the problem I removed the time constraints, removed the parental controls, deleted and re-added them, and made them standard users.  I have reinstalled, used disk utility to repair permissions, and made them admins.   Any help is appreciated.

Users don't need Apple ID's. That's not the issue. Have you tried repairing permissions their accounts?

Repairing User Permissions in OS X Lion
You’ll need to reboot to perform this, and then use the same resetpassword utility that is used to change passwords in Lion, but instead choosing a hidden option.
When you use the Disk Utility app and Repair Permissions — it doesn’t actually repair the permission settings on folders and files in your Home folder where your documents and personal applications reside.
In Lion, there is an additional Repair Permissions application utility hidden away. This tool is located inside boot Repair Utilities. Here’s how to access it.
Restart Lion and hold down the Command and R keys.    You will boot into the Repair Utilities screen. On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches, but you’re not going to reset the password. Instead, click on the icon for your Mac’s hard drive at the top. From the drop-down below it, select the user account where you are having issues.
At the bottom of the window, you’ll see an area labeled ‘Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs’. Click the Reset button there.
The reset process takes a couple of minutes. When it’s done, quit the programs you’ve opened and restart your Mac. Notice that ‘Spotlight’ starts re-indexing immediately.

  • Macbook Pro to Mac Mini data sharing, sync, and/or time machine backup?

I currently have a MacBook Pro and am about to buy a Mac Mini. I do a good deal of multitasking on the MBP I and would like to use the Mac Mini as the "home base" of my dealings and my MBP as an extension of it, the way it should be. In short, I will have a desk for the new Mini but I don't really intend on ever being physically at it. Rather, I will be on my MBP or remoting in to it from a PC. At any rate, as an example, is it possible / what would be the best solution for being able to work on my iWeb site via my MBP if it's housed and stored on my Mac Mini?
Secondly, since I will now have 2 mac machines, there is a data question at hand. Specifically, is there a good way to sync all information and settings bewteen two macs running Snow Leopard? If so, what/how, if not, what would be the best option for accomplishing this type of goal?
Lastly, since I will now have 2 mac machines, how should I handle the time machine backups? I have a 2tb ext hard drive serving as a time machine backup for my MBP right now but how would I go about doing the same for the Mini? Should I / can I use the same drive for the mini or does it have to be a seperate time machine backup?
(For the record, I do have an additional 2tb ext hard drive that I would be happy to use as a sync point for all of this data if needed should it be possible to "share" data, apps, etc between the 2 machines. I would be able to broadcast it wirelessly via a device called pogoplug.)
I feel like there is a better and more efficient way to integrate what it is that I'm trying to do here. Any thoughts on the matter?

There are numerous solutions to sync information on two or more Macs. Try doing a google search for "Mac sync" or something along those lines.
As for Time Machine backups, you could connect an external disk drive to your Mac mini and use it as a Time Machine disk for the Mac mini and if you share it out, you can probably also use it to do Time Machine backups of your laptop, but I personally have not tested that yet so I cannot say with certainty that the sharing part will work.

  • Syncing from MacBook Pro to Iphone 4 & mini Ipad

I have inherited all of my great Apple products from my wonderful son and his equally wonderful wife.  When they upgraded to new Mac's, I got an "old" MacBook Pro which is running version 10.5.8.  I have been told that I could upgrade to 10.6.8 but that still wouldn't be enough for the cloud, which requires 10.7.4.  I also have an Iphone 4, which I love, and until recently I could easily sync all of the contacts I added to my address book on the computer to my Iphone.  That is no longer working.
I received a Mini Ipad a few months ago and was able to get all of my contacts (at that time) in the Ipad.  I am wondering if the problems I am having have something to do with the fact that my computer cannot use the cloud, but I think both the Iphone and Ipad are using it as changes I make to the "notes" on my Iphone show up on the Ipad.
    Can anyone help?  Thanks.

Do this, turn off iCloud, for contacts on your phone. You'll get a prompt to keep on your phone or not, select keep. You don't have to mess with your iPad. Then, make sure Address Book on your Mac has at least one unique entry, can be fake, doesn't matter. Then, connect your phone, iTunes running, on the Info pane you'll now be able to elect to sync contacts with Address Book. You'll get a merge or replace prompt, select merge. When done verify your contacts are in Address Book. You can now turn contacts, for iCloud, back on, on your phone. Don't say yes to merge when prompted, or you'll have duplicates.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Transferring iPhoto book from MacBook Pro to iMac

    Hi everyone
I am the proud owner of a new iMac. I am trying to transfer an album I started on my husband's MacBook Pro, but all I can do is to export the photos...I already imporated all my events from the MacBook to the iMac. Now, I was to save the work that i have done on the album itself. Is the transfer feasible? Tx

By album do you mean book?  If so then you can't transfer a book from one library to another because the book is virtual, existing only in the database files of the library.
What you can do is duplicate the library with the book and in the copy delete all photos excecpt for those in the book. Then copy the book to the other Mac and use it to complete the book.  You can copy additional photos/albums from the large library to the book library with the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.
This tutorial describes how to cull the library down to just the book: #9 - Archiving an iPhoto 7(08)/8(09)/9(11) Book for Editing and/or Ordering at a Later Date

  • Macbook Pro or Mac Mini for Logic Pro X

Hi I currently have a Mid 2011 Macbook Pro 13' with 16GB 1600Mhz RAM and a 500GB Hybrid Solid State Drive. I use Logic Pro X heavily to the point where I get crazy CPU spikes and cant work with Logic Pro smoothly anymore. (Note: I only have around almost 20 tracks and I get these spikes, I've been doing much research to reduce this but still no luck.) I can't work with freezing tracks as well due to the Logic Pro X bug that unfreezes all the frozen tracks when pressing CMD+Z. Now I really think I need to upgrade my mac. I'd want to save as much money as I can so I was thinking of the 2.3Ghz quad core i7 Mac Mini?
What difference does the regular Mac mini make with the mac mini with the OSX Server? Do you think the $799 mac mini, when paired with a 16GB 1600Mhz ram and a 7200rpm HD work wonders for me in my music dream? Should I still go for the macbook pros. As far as portability, I think both are portable and I won't have any problem with both. When it comes to the screen, and keyboard and mouse, I have no problem in buying them individually. All I really care about is if it could handle what I want it to do at the cheapest price possible. I can't move away from the mac beacause Logic Pro X is pulling my leg.
If you guys have any recommendations please feel free to comment.
    Thank you very much

    Ok.. a few points..
A Mac Mini is really much the same as a Macbook Pro without the screen and keyboard..  but for a lot less money...
The Mac Mini Server version is identical to the standard Mac Mini with OS X but on the system disk is the Server App which you must run to activate the server functionality. Dont run the server app and the Mac Mini Server is just a mac Mini running normal OS X
Instead of freezing tracks.. have you tried Bounce in place... ?
Overloads can often occur due to using internal audio or... the Audio interface you are using and its (poor quality) drivers.. Are you using one? if so, which>
If you are getting overloads with that Macbook Pro then a recent Mac Mini will probably not improve the situation for you... The fact you are getting overloads could be how you are using Logic.. what plugins you are using.. what else is running ion the Mac and so on.. What processor does your MBP have. The newer Mac Minis can have faster more powerful  i7 quad cores which effectivelky gives you 8 cores to work with and that can help reduce loads...
Note: Often starting from scratch with a clean Mac and just installing LogicPpro plus plugins (and not using it for anything else..) can speed things up anyhow...

  • Connectivity Issue Between MacBook Pro and Mac Mini

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Mini both with Yosemite 10.10.2, I've never had any issues with them sharing a connection when I was home, (I've never been able to connect outside of my home network) but I use the Mini to backup my MacBook Pro, but has of February 11th my MacBook Pro doesn't see my Mac Mini no matter what I do. I can share the screen from the Mini to the Book Pro but I can't remotely access the Mini from the MacBook Pro. I've turned off Back to My Mac on both Macs and removed it from my Airport Extreme and re-entered all of the information. I signed out of iCloud on both Macs and signed back in. I haven't changed any settings at all before I lost the connection, I am not sure how to resolve this issue.

    Hey there GRivera210,
It sounds like you are having issues with using Back to my Mac. I would recommend using the troubleshooting outlined in the following article to help resolve the issue. It also has a contact for the iCloud support team if it doesnt resolve it:

  • ICal syncs FROM Macbook Pro 2008 10.6.8 TO iPad 5.1.1. but not from iPad to Macbook

I've managed to get my Macbook to sync iCal entries to my brand new iPad, but it won't work the other way round. I really need the iPad iCal to sync to my macbook seeing as most new entries will be written in my iPad first.
    Please help!!
Macbook Pro from March 2008 updated to Snow Leopard from Leopard
    iPad 5.1.1.
    Thanks!

You need to upgrade the computer's OS or switch to a product such as Firefox.
To upgrade, open the Mac App Store and try downloading Yosemite. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
